Dear Kansas City, I’m sorry. Baltimoreans know what it’s like. You watch garbage baseball all summer long, passing the time until the NFL season starts. We’re both small market cities with 2 sports teams (if you count our baseball teams).

But in Baltimore, the wait was well worth it. In Kansas City, the Chiefs only prolonged the Royal pain of a long sports year.

The Baltimore crowd was intense during the Ravens 38-24 win. After a surprising run to the AFC Championship game, it felt like Baltimore waited years for the start of this season. The crowd noise was louder during television timeouts than it normally is during a scoring play across the street at Camden Yards.

Kickoff Weekend is turning into what Opening Day used to be. Hope. In football, every team has a shot. It used to be that way in baseball. But no matter what Baseball Commissioner Bud Selig tells you, that’s not the case in baseball.

The Tampa Bay Rays trip to the World Series was just a fluke. Look at the teams that are going to the playoffs this year. They’re in New York, Boston, Detroit, Los Angeles, Philadelphia, Denver and St. Louis. All of them except for St. Louis are in the biggest television markets in the country. If it weren’t for a colossal collapse by the Cubs, the Cardinals might not be there.

For Royals & Orioles fans, we know it’s not the 80’s anymore. Those two teams aren’t relevant. In football, most teams have a legitimate shot at making the playoffs.

Despite the struggles of the Chiefs this decade, they actually have a shot to make the playoffs. Not a good shot. But the Chiefs’ chances in 2009 are better than the Royals’ chances in 2010.

The Raiders are a hot mess. Don’t buy Denver. The Broncos win over Cincinnati says more about the Bengals. The Chargers are the most talented team, but Norv Turner is still their coach.

Kansas City coach Todd Haley and general manager Scott Pioli have the franchise on the right track. The Chiefs were tied with the Ravens with 3 minutes left. Who knows? If Matt Cassel plays, Kansas City might even win the game. The good news, Chief fans, the royal pain is almost over.

The Royals have a better shot in 2010 than the Chiefs now......

In fact The Royals were great at the beginning of the year this year...then injuries happen and yep. The Chiefs with healthy players still suck.
