Huard named as Chiefs starting quarterback
By ADAM TEICHER
The Kansas City Star
Damon Huard has won the Chiefs quarterback competition and will start the regular season opener Sept. 9 against the Texans in Houston.

Coach Herm Edwards seemed to be leaning toward starting Brodie Croyle. But Edwards apparently changed his mind after Croyle's disappointing play in Thursday night's preseason loss to New Orleans.

Huard, because of a sore calf muscle, did not play against the Saints. He did not lead the Chiefs to any touchdowns in either of the first two preseason games, but he had some success last season filling in for Trent Green.

I hear you guys but I think Damon Huard deserves it. He got shafted last year when Green came back. Herm does not want to make another bone headed decision so the safe bet is Huard. I was for Croyle to start but he did nothing but play his way out of the starting position. By naming Huard starter and if he does not play well he can then go to Croyle and not look back.:sign0153:

Croyle made rookie mistakes but the line and receivers killed him too. Huard will be no better.

I am really having a hard time understanding why so many people are so high on an unproven commodity. I would love for Brodie to be our QB but he is not ready!! He had every chance and he blew it. Yes the line didn't help & there were some dropped passes, but what did he do when he did have protection?? He was what 4 or 5 for 17?? He had 3 INTs in 3 games & it wasn't like they were tipped or receivers ran the wrong route. They were bad plays because of bad decisions.

I think/hope he will be very good!! Someday!! Why would you want to start the season with him if he is not ready?? We have a tough schedule to begin as it is.

I don't know why everyone is down on Damon. He played pretty good for us last year. Give the guy a chance. If he screws up in the beginning you bring Brodie in and let him get experience & get ready for next year. Just because he has been a back-up doesn't mean he can't play. He was a back-up for some pretty descent QBs. You make it sound like he was backing up scrubs & couldn't get a start.

Rich Gannon was a back-up. Trent Green didn't play until he was in St. Louis. Kurt Warner was a damn grocery warehouse stocker!! Just give him a chance. If he doesn't come through I will be right here saying bring Brodie in.

I refuse to be so down & the season hasn't even started. I look forward to this time of year like a kid waits for Christmas. I am going to be excited until I unwrap a piece of coal or a giant turd. You know what?? In the NFL you don't necessarily know that until weeks 4-6.

I know some of you will call me a homer like you have others, but that's ok. If being a diehard fan of the Chiefs is a homer than I proudly wear the name!!

Being a homer doesn't mean I am not a realist about our season. I have several concerns: Our O'line is not good right now. Our D has too many lapses for big plays. Our kicker is not impressive. I have several concerns about this year but that doesn't take away the hope for the season. Along with concerns we have alot of things to excite me. I love Pollard & Page. I think Bowe will be a big help. I think Kris Wilson is getting to show his talent. Our LBs are going to be one of the top groups in the league. Tamba & Jarrod are getting better. Larry got taken care of so that is behind us.

Sorry about the rant, but I refuse to be dragged down when the season is still ahead of us.

I'm disappointed because people are so afraid to take a risk. They want it now, now, now. I realize that those who have been fans for forever are growing impatient, and understandably so. There are positives and negatives to each. I'm hoping Huard does better than he has performed during preseason. I was just really hoping that we'd take a risk for once, too.

What gets me is that Carl said in the last Hard Knocks that they were waiting for someone to "take" the QB spot, but that no one had yet. Croyle didn't play well, but Huard didn't even play. How could he have "taken" it?

I'm disappointed, but I'm still looking forward to the other young players getting their opportunity to grow.

Luv,

The job was Brodie's for the taking. He failed miserably!! Damon is not a hall of famer but he is not a bad QB. We all would love Brodie to be the starter, because those of us who go way back would love to see a drafted QB start.

What bugs me is people want Brodie in because, what the heck we're going to have a crappy year anyway. We don't know that!! Every season starts with a perfect record so why not take that attitude in the beginning???

I was actually thinking we'd do better with him. And if we didn't, then it is a rebuilding year, so the expectations were loer to begin with in general. I am usually the optimist. I still am, really. I was just so hoping that we would go against the norm and try something new. My interest has not waned. I'm still 100% behind my team.

Wait, I am trying to understand why Trent was let go to begin with? he has been a terrific QB for the Chiefs, he was out with a concussion last year but he came back and played and will be starting now in Miami.

Unless Croyle was ready to take over as the starter, I don't understand why keep Huard and let Trent go? hasn't Trent been a more reliable QB than Huard?

You're damn right I want it now. NOW!!! I've watched this team for 12 years and I have never even seen the Chiefs win a playoff game. To watch us sea-saw back and forth between good defense to good offense and back, over and over again is getting stale. This is why Marty is gone. He couldn't get us to the next level. I'm sorry my expectations are "too high". I'm just absolutely sick and tired of watching us squander our chances by making the same damn mistakes all the time! For the sake of my mental stability can we please try to progress? Is it a mistake to try to win games? PLEASE, can we field a team that has a realistic shot at a championship and not screw it up with bone-head roster decisions?? I've got no problem with Damon starting. Croyle is obviously not ready, and if I were watching performances like last Thursday's all season, I would be continuously asking myself "what if?". This way the what-if's will be answered one way or the other. Either Damon does decent and starts the entire season or he does poorly and we put Brodie in to get his shot. It may be conservative but it sounds sensible to me.

I'm confused. You are tired of watching the same mistakes being made year after year, yet you don't want us to take a chance now in order to change that for the future? Welcome to mediocre football. We won't make the playoffs with Huard. I highly doubt, based on his performance thus far that he plays like he did last year.

You don't know if you don't give him the shot. Starting Croyle now is the mistake of all mistakes. Just because he is younger doesn't mean he is the guy we need to take a chance on. We are taking a chance starting Damon, also. It may be more of a conservative decision but the risks are still there. It boggles my mind how you can so avidly support starting a guy who has been as pathetic in the preseason as Croyle. Nobody 'won' the job. (I believe because Huard did not have a fair shot to win it but that's neither here nor there.) Croyle for sure LOST the job. If you are a first time customer of mine and your computer is in worse shape after I work on it, I would not expect you to come back.

I think it is the perfect sitiation. Either Huard comes in and kicks butt, or he will be replaced by our QB of the future. I think it is a smart decision by Hermie. Croyle did nothing to warrant winning the job. Nothing. Hermie wanted Croyle, but Brodie looked awful. Huard gives us the better shot to win Game 1 IMO.

Spending time as a backup has helped alot of young guys to prepare for starting jobs.

I too, have doubts that Huard can perform well this year. But the last thing that I want to see happen is for the Chiefs to see glimpses of greatness out of a quarterback, only to never allow him to step on the field again.

That kind of mistake is humiliating. (Rich Gannon) To watch a quarterback show us how good he can be, then to let him go to the Raiders and lead them to a pair of conference championship games and a Super Bowl kind of sucks.

Especially, when we have to dump our quarterback, who we liked better than the other guy, who is 'our guy', because he couldn't do squat.

I am glad that we are going to give Huard a chance to show us what he is made of, rather than let him take someone else to the Super Bowl.

The other thing about Huard besides second to only Manning last year in Quarterback rating is that this guy is a young 34 since he has not played in as many games as a starter and he knows this system as good or better than anyone. He does not make big mistakes and in this offense you can't have interceptions every game. He completed over 60% of his passes and his touchdown to interception ratio was 11 to 1. I think this can be put to rest until we see how he performs in the regular season.:bananen_smilies046:

I don't think anyone should see this as a negative. He went 5-3 last year. Supposedly the O-line took a step back and the receivers got better.

I'm sticking with 10-6. If he lays an egg and we start 2-4 or 1-5 or something like that: prepare for a long regular season pre-season as Croyle comes in....

Either way we make the play-offs or we build or QB for the future. Everyone should be cool with that.

9 fumbles, only 5 lost, but I think you throw that up against 16 sacks and figure how many you want to put on him.

Only 1 interception (means good decision making).

If you give him all 5 lost fumbles, he still only has 6 turn-overs in 8 games.

1-3 against the AFC. The Chiefs were only 5-7 against the AFC as a team on the season (went 4-0 against our NFC division), so without him, we were 2-4.

BUT - I would submit that in 2 of the losses, his rating was 87.8 & 97.9. In the last game of the season that secured our play-off spot, which Trent Green got credit for, he came in and went 2-3 with 54 yards and a QB rating of 109.7.

I think he makes the offense look better, not the other way around.

Okay. If he's so great, then my question is why is he having so much difficulty in preseason games. He started with the first string against the Dolphins, and absolutely sucked. How can a god of a QB suck so bad? Don't tell me it's preseason and it doesn't matter. He should not have struggled like he did.

I don't know why you are so high on Brodie & so down on Damon. I don't remember anyone saying Damon was a God of QBs. I remember hearing Damon gave us the best shot at winning!!

As far as Damon sucking so bad, you may want to compare the two. Brodie is 16/36 with 3 INTs. He averaged 12 passes per game. Damon is 5/9 with 1 INT. He averaged 4.5 passes per game.

Given those stats it's safe to say neither QB set the world on fire. Just compare apples to apples!!

Last year in the pre-season the Chiefs had 0 passing TDs. Damon will be fine & I suggest you hold judgement until the season starts.

I think we have 2 choices for the season with Huard starting:

1) Huard plays great (or at lest well enough) and we make it to the play-offs.

2) Huard plays bad or despite his great performance we miss the playoff race by mid-season and then the Croyle era begins.

It's the only 2 ways I see the season going now...

Hey, I agree with Zona Chief. Herm had no other choice. Croyle had three quarters last Thursday to make the job his, and he didn't do anything. I was pulling for Croyle, but at this point Huard is the best option. You have to go with your best option to win. If and when the season goes south (probably "when" unless the O-line improves) then stick Croyle in there to get some experience and prepare for next year. But let's not write this season off just yet.

Agreed, you can't give up while you have a perfect record or even when you are only a few games out. Once it's over, it's over. If it gets to that point, focus on rebuilding then.

Agreed! I never write it off until the last whistle blows or there is no way to pull out of the slump.

Reading back on the posts. I dont think anyone in the chief nation thinks that Huard is a QB god. If you watch him in the games after green was hurt. The came against cinncinati was painful to watch. If we go 0-4 out the shoot then put the kid in and let him grow. If huard goes in and has a rating in the 90.0's Let give us a shot at the playoffs. I am reminded of the bad news bears watching preseason. they won a few didnt they. I got to believe in the chiefs. with out them I dont got much to do in the fall:drunkhb:

I hold no expectations for 2007, and hope that 2008 holds more promise.

Another thought as a semi-outsider is that Herm may have determined that starting Croyle behind this line would actually slow his development (ala David Carr) and he's better of waiting until Macintosh returns from his knee injury and gives them a little less porous line...

The biggest determining factor was probably the three tunrnovers in three games. Herm Hates turnovers above all else and the errant throw in the red zone with no pressure was a big wakeup call for him against Miami. I think we we could be shopping for a new QB in the offseason as we have some age on the team. We are getting younger which I believe is good but with law edwards gonzales and steady eddy. we are not as young as we want to be. I do like our new TE. I have read if we are going to lose. Lose big and go 2-14 and get the draft pick. So hear is my season predictions

@houston W Close but a win
@Chitown L Grossman sucks but we cant score
Vikes W Not really sure why
@Spamdiego L Here LT we will holod your Jock
Jacksonville L but a close one
Bengals W Revenge for trent green
@Oakland-W Because its oakland
BY week and we need it
Green bay W we are at home and not lambeau
Denver W I will never predict a bronco win
@Indy L watch the playoff game last season
Raiders W at home enough said
@donkeland W just for spite
Tennesee W Havent heard much
@detroit W Common it detroit
@jets W jets look good and will already have a spotand wont play big starters

Agreed, but this too is due in large part to a "porous" O-line. IMO
