OAKLAND, Calif. | JaMarcus Russell said he was confused by being benched Sunday against the Chiefs. He said he thought he was being productive, if not perfect. Whether Russell, Oakland’s starting quarterback, was putting an optimistic face on another sour performance — or testing the limits of denial — he and his replacement, Bruce Gradkowski, were as responsible as anyone for the Chiefs’ 16-10 victory.
