View Full Version : To all the Haley, Charles and Cassel doubters...

How can anyone possibly doubt the direction this team is going?

Matt Cassel threw the ball 15/30 for 248 yards and 2 TD's. His percentage was disappointing, but he connected when it counted the most. The fumble had more to do with that horrible O line letting the Steelers through. But Cassel did well against a very good defense.

Jamaal Charles performed admirably. I wish they would pound the rock more, but I understand that Haley is a passing coach. Charles rushed 17 times for 58 yards for an average of 3.4 yards per rush. I'll admit, I'm a total homer for Charles being that I loved to watch him play at Texas. He was able to rip off a 97 yard kick off return for a TD today and catch a TD too. People say he isn't an "every down back." That may be true in a conventional ground attack team. But I think Charles will do very well in a Haley type of system.

I stand behind Haley and Pioli 100 percent. They are turning the team around. The defense picked off 2 passes and forced a fumble. We just beat one of the best teams in football and by all rights we had no business doing so. They pulled off the impossible late in the season. Obviously Haley is motivating his team and they are pumped up! We've been able to come back late in games to stay competitive, but this time WE WON! Herm Edwards could never accomplish the motivation needed to win those kinds of games.

Flame away if you wish and keep *****ing about how Haley yells at his players, how Charles isn't cut out to be a starting back, how Pioli is making bad decisions and how Cassel isn't accurate. I'll take it and the direction we're headed in right now. GO CHIEFS!!!

I agree with everything except your O line comment. It was clearly Cassel holding the ball too long on the majority of the sacks. The line did pretty well in the 2nd half. I also agree that Charles should get the ball more, he is a play maker and can make big things happen.

How about Chris Chambers? All this guy does is make big catches when it matters. I have always been a fan of his but now he is my favorite player.

I have faith in Haley and Pioli, we are going in the right direction. This was a huge win and hopefully we can build off of this.

Cassel may have held it too long. But he was holding it right(instead of how some QB's don't) and that ball got popped out. It's hard for me to defend that O line after they way they played all season. They have a loooong way to go and I still think we need new talent in the off season. It would also help if they would open some lanes for the running game. I trust we'll get it fixed.

Chambers is one of those Haley/Pioli decisions. I'll admit, that I didn't see too much upside when they signed him. Now I do and the dude definitely is out to prove San Diego wrong in letting him go. I wish Bowe was out there for the double threat, but Chambers is doing pretty good by himself. He's awfully fast for his size and age.

Charles is doing a great job and getting better.

Cassel is doing alright. He needs to learn to just throw the ball away rather than taking the sack. If the OL would step up and protect Matt things would be better.

Haley NEEDS to get an OC in the play house. He will be more successful.

Why is it that wee had 3 time outs before the half and didn't use them on the last drive?

And there were some interesting tidbits about today's game:

Pope had a good game, Chambers is blowin' up all over the place, and Bradley continues to soldier along as a nice additional receiver.

Jamaal Charles contributing something far more important than yards- SCORES.

The O-line, while still in dire need of repair/replacement, did give some time against one of the league's premiere defenses, and still yielded us 58 yards from Charles.

Chiefs WITH LJ; 1-7
Chiefs WITHOUT LJ: 2-0 Hmmm....

We got to the QB today- I was so proud of that DJ sack, jumping OVER the blocker to get the sack.

Andy Studebaker- Eventually we're going to have to start him and DJ every week. :D

And remember folks- this win against the super bowl champs was without Vrabel or Bowe. It is entirely possible we could win against Cleveland, Buffalo, and at least split with the Donkeys (it's still tough to win IN Denver).

Damn, what a good Sunday. Oh, except for that whole "Guy broke out my truck window and stole stuff" thing from last night. I hope he's a Raider fan, and bleeding to death somewhere.

Cheers!

The boys from Texas were on FIRE today! DJ was a beast. I hope he continues to play at that level the rest of the way. He has major talent. To watch him leap over defenders was crazy! :sterb184:

Charles is a stud. The dude is so fast and shifty and today was why I have been calling for him to get more playing time. He's a hell of a runner and receiver. Just think of where we might be if LJ had been let go or benched sooner. And watching the players react when they won tells me a great deal of what they think of Haley. They've all bought into the new regime and this team is going places. I AM PUMPED!!!!! :sign0008:

I have been on the fence about Haley up to this point, but after today I'm on board 100%. They played toe to toe with the champs and won. It wasn't lucky, they didn't get a bunch of calls go their way, they simply outplayed the steelers.
I don't need to hear about Polomalu being out either, the Chiefs didn't have Bowe.
Cassle stepped up big time in the 2nd half, and especially in the 4rt qtr.
Charles is a weapon, and he has heart. That play on the 3 to pick up a 1st down was sweet, and the run he had in OT was great. Ad in a kick return, he had a hell of a game.
The Defense also came up huge in the 2nd half. Maybe we found a star in Studabaker.
I can't help but think if we can get the o-line fixed this offseason, The Chiefs could be a dangerous team next year.

GREAT WIN!!!

However, I hate to be the guy to put a rain cloud on this parade, but we had no business winning that game, and for anyone to come on here and think that this is the big turnaround, well it might be a little premature.

Look, I want to Chiefs to do well, I screamed myself hoarse today cheering for them, but when you look at the numbers, we were really pathetic, if it wasn't for big mistakes by the Steelers, we don't win this game.

1st Downs
Steelers 27
Chiefs 13

Passing yards
Steelers 400
Chiefs - 214

Rushing
Steelers 114
Chiefs 68

The defensive line played pretty good against the rush, but were horrible in getting Rothlisberger down, now I cannot be too critical on them, Big Ben is pretty hard to sack for anyone. That play with Johnson hanging on for dear life was hilarious.

The offensive line was horrible, I mean, can these guys play any worse? Yeah, there were a couple of plays where Cassel held on to the ball for about 3 seconds before getting sacked, but please. One sack the Steelers only rushed with 4 players and he was sacked within 2 seconds of the snap, that is just aweful.

Pass defense, can we allow receivers to get any more open? That touchdown Ward caught completely caught the defenders by surprise. It seemed like almost every pass play they had receivers standing in the wide open, especially over the middle.

We really have a long way to go still. We might be going in the right direction, and after this win, these guys should really be pumped up for San Diego next week.

I also thought it was big the way we won in overtime. We earned that score with moving the ball and then had the Steelers right at the edge of the cliff when Ryan Succop comes on to kick a chip shot fg. You could see in the face of Ben Roethlisberger before the fg that he knew it was over! He had the look of Dun Dun DUN dun!

And for us to finish a game and put the nail in the coffin was huge (we did so last week at Oakland too, but to do so against a good team is a big step up the ladder. Things are looking up is the key, even if not necessarily time to say we've reached a big turnaround.

Yep, still have a ways to go. But I feel encouraged that happy days will be here again for this great football team of ours. :)

Those things are why I have hope.

If the Chiefs played a perfect game, and still had to go to overtime to win, that would be a greater concern.

With the win today I think people have to start to show Haley respect as a head coach. This is a better team simply becuse they now have 3 wins as opposed to 2 of a season ago. With a head coach that some will have you belive had a proven track record. Todd haley has a the very least done a better job with this team then Herm Edwards did a year ago. There is no denying that. And he should at the very least be given respect for that. Not to mention that The Kansas City Chiefs just beat the defending superbowl champs. When is that last time we could sit here and say that. Things are looking up for the Chiefs.

Cassell helped this team beat the defending SuperBowl champs, and all you can do is complain.

I think sometimes we forget that the players on the other side of the ball are also professionals. Cassell doesn't have all day in the pocket to survey the field. If he threw the ball away everytime he felt pressure, he'd have been 0-30 today. He didn't play a perfect game today, but he played well enough to beat the champs.

Cheers to whoever said that this was a game that Edwards could never pull out, that is so true. He would have walked onto that field today knowing he was going to lose, and would have had his team ready to do so. Then he would have found victory by not losing by more than 2 TD's or some such BS. I'm happy with our direction, it's just a long road and will take time. They will get it right!

And the season isn't over yet.

I'm very much looking forward to what the offseason/draft holds for KC this year. I think the screaming about O-line has been loud enough now that they know that's where the main issue is.

But we could use some predatory safeties, and perhaps a frightening, pass-rushing guy somewhere on the defense.

Clearly, something's starting to work better.

Awesome that we beat The Steelers.

Even better that we have a winning streak.

Shameful that we feel like we won The Super Bowl.

Even more shameful that we are so thrilled about a 2-game winning streak, at 3-7.

Yes. This win definitely signifies that we have one foot firmly place on the ground.

However, we still have quite a long way to go.

Are we going in the right direction? From 2-14, almost every direction can be considered the right one.

But the "right direction" in my opinion, is The Super Bowl. Trying to use this one win as "proof" that we are headed in that direction is pretty loose ground to stand on.

I still have every single doubt in Haley that I had two weeks ago.

But, thanks to LJ, Charles has been pushed into action, and has made all the difference in the world.

I am still 100% convinced that getting rid of Pollard and Sackintosh were bad ideas.

And that making enemies of your co-workers is a bad idea.

Taking on OC and QB coaching duties in your first year as HC was a bad idea.

But, just like two weeks ago, I know that Haley can rebound from alot of bad decisions.

Overall, I do not think that Haley will be a good HC for a very long time. And I do not consider him to be a good HC right now.

But I soooo enjoy hearing my lifelong friend whine about why his Steelers lost to my Chiefs. :D

Very true. But we didn't win The Super Bowl. We won one game against a good team.

But we are still 3-7. Pretty easy for me to see how one might think that we have a long way to go. And plenty to complain about.

I guess it just irratates me when people say, "it was just one game", thats true, but its got to start somewhere. I disagree that its shamefull to feel like we won the superbowl, after the last couple years, I think Chiefs fans deserve to be excited.
I do believe we are heading in the right direction, being the super bowl. Haley has made mistakes to be sure, but he seems to be getting better every week. And I do hope he hires an OC this offseason,(Wiess).
My point is, you can only win 1 at a time, and that was a huge one. There's a long way to go. Maybe this is where we turn the corner, maybe not. But no one can argue that this wasn't the biggest win for the Chiefs in 2 seasons.

I think you are the scared little boy...calling coaches names on the internet!! :lamende:

But we are still 3-7.

But we are an OT loss and a game we dominated but lost away from being 5-5!! :bananen_smilies046:

While some may still complain, some of us are celebrating. There is a saying "Stop and smell the flowers" Enjoy guys, we beat a really good f**kin team. Sure it wasnt perfect but we won. I have know u a long time so I know that even if we were 9-1 there would still be something to complain about but take a look at the bright side. We beat the Steelers!!

And we may be 3-7, but we're 3-2 in the last 5. Sure there's still a lot of improvement to be made, but again the point is, especially after beating the defending SUPER BOWL champions, that things are looking UP.

Beating the champs is the first win in a long time that realy truely felt like a win. The redskins and raiders didnt this season. Thoses to me just felt like we were the bad team that had a slightly better day. But to beat the champs is huge for this team. I am still on cloud 9. GO CHIEFS!!!!!

Yes, but that doesn't matter. We lose? We argue. We win? We argue. Sad, really, but then, this is the internet and opinions and viewpoints may vary.

I'm in full agreement with you- things are definitely looking up, and I hope they continue to get better.

And still we will ahve to agree to disagree. I just don't think anyone can determine whether things really are looking up. We haven't made any significant moves. This team got a couple of lucky breaks and they were able to capitalize, this Sunday against San Diego we could see another 34 - 7 loss.

If that happens, we will once again be asking ourselves what is wrong with this team. My thing is that we are still not right, and whether we are moving in the right direction it is too early to tell.

Yeah, those other wins did serve the importance purpose of giving us much needed wins after being 0-5 (and on the heels of 2-23 in Herm's last 25). But this is definitely a much bigger step up to show we can beat more teams than the Skins Faders Rams Lions Browns kind. :)

Yeah probably even on Colts forums there's some who are elated at being 10-0 and others who are complaining that the Colts are winning by too small margins, heh.

Yes we could and I sure hope that doesn't happen. If we can either win outright or lose much more closely this time, I think we'll be feeling good about our progression. I honestly think our 34-7 type games are through (as a regular thing at least. Any team can have a laugher once in a while).

I agree- we can't really know if things are permanently turning around, but I think you'd have to agree we're playing/doing better since the start of the season.

Isn't that what you're supposed to do, though? Capitalize on the lucky breaks you get? I think we have made some significant moves- getting rid of LJ being one of those, and picking up Chris Chambers is another. We still need to make even more significant moves, building a better O-line.

I won't. I'll know that we ran into a surging San Diego team at their house, and we couldn't stop their surge. We'll see- I'd hate to count us out without playing the game.

You have known me just too briefly. Until Herm came to town, (To the day, it was he day Roaf announced his retirement) I expected to win every single game we played.

When the team is playing well enough to make me confident in them, I will be.

But right now, even with a huge win against Pittsburgh, we are not.

There is no single aspect of this team that I can trust yet.

I trusted Priest. I trusted Green. I trusted Gonzales. I trusted the o-line. Most of all, I trusted Dick Vermiel.

I want to trust Charles. I want to trust Cassel. I want to trust Chambers.(Pretty close) I can only dream of trusting the o-line again. And I really want to trust Todd Haley.

Our running game, passing, and all forms of defense are inconsistent, at best.

The closest thing that we have to being able to hang our hats on and say that we are good at is special teams.

And, contrary to unpopular belief, Special teams does not win championships.:D

Once we get good at something, I will feel good about it.

And I pray we are one day as good at something as we were when Vermiel was here.

*** Vermiel being the more recent era where I trusted this team. Marty's Chiefs were pretty trustworthy too.

GO CHIEFS!!!I agree! I think they're doing a great job. I mea we're not going to be getting to the superbowl in 1 or 2 years but this is a good start IMO!

Today sucked, to be sure. But I've never seen so many weird, freak plays happen to one team in one game.
A pass off a linemens head for a pick. Two shotgun snaps not even close, this was never a problem untill this game. The pass attempt where Cassel just lost the ball, again first time for that.
Even had all that not happened, Chiefs probably still lose, but it's at least fairly competitive.
Let's give it another week, see what happens.
The one thing that stood out was I never saw Haley lose it,he remained cool and collected.

Today was bad. But its something that teams go through. Realy we probley will even have 1 or 2 of theses games next year. Thats just how it is. Young teams have thoses games. But this team has won more games then last year YOU HAVE TO GIVE HALEY credit for that IMO.

It's pretty tough to get angry at ridiculous turnovers when they're being made by you center or your $63 million man.

I didn't get angry and I usually do. All you could do was laugh. Those things were amazingly stupid. How do you get angry at stuff that NEVER happens? You think you could say anything to them that they don't already know? There's nothing to say... although, Cassel needs to elevate his throws. His balls get knocked down too easy.

There are things to be said about some of the things that happened.

Two bad snaps in the game? Well that was two that we screwed up, there were plenty of others that Cassel was able to handle, but they were off the mark, go watch the game again. Most QBs get to those that come in around the knees, but there can be something said about Niswanger doing a little better job about placement of snaps.

Of course, I think a lot of this comes from the fact that this line is so bad. Niswanger is getting rid of the ball so quickly because he is about to get steam rolled if he does not get his head up and blocking someone. That is coaching plain and simple. Haley said something to this o-line and that carried over to the game.

Cassel has had a problem all season with deflected passes. It has been getting worse since the bye week. I said in another thread that I think this is because he feels he has to throw the ball hard and flat (trajectory) to avoid an interception. I believe, though I hardly know for sure, that this is happening because our receivers really are not getting a lot of seperation.

As for the fumble. I was just saying prior to Charles' fumble that the way he was fighting to get that extra yard with three or four guys on him was a recipe for a fumble. Charles is not that kind of back, he does not have the strength to win that fight and he will get stripped if he continues to do that.

This was not a simple case of a fluke game. We played a very good team that was on top of their game yesterday and we got killed.
