Sources: Charlie Weis to become Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator - ESPN (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=4802526)

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Charlie Weis has agreed to become the offensive coordinator of the Kansas City Chiefs, according to team and league sources.

Weis could be named to the position within the next 24 to 48 hours, the sources said.

Weis will be reunited with head coach Todd Haley, with whom he shared an office when both were young assistants with the New York Jets. Weis also will be reunited with Chiefs general manager Scott Pioli, who was the Patriots vice president of player personnel when Weis was the offensive coordinator for three Super Bowl championships before he became the coach at Notre Dame.

Haley ran the offense in his first year with the Chiefs after dismissing offensive coordinator Chan Gailey. Haley had expressed a desire to find a coordinator so he could better manage his head coaching responsibilities. Weis, dismissed last fall with a 35-27 record in five seasons at Notre Dame, sounds like just what Haley is looking for.

"Charlie's a guy I have a great amount of respect for as a coach," Haley said Wednesday at his final news conference of the season. "He's a coach that system-wise, I would say we're as close as you can be. Charlie's a guy I consider a friend and I've talked to throughout the year, no different from some of the other guys I lean on for things and advice."

Haley has begun a staff evaluation and said he has already released offensive line coach Joe D'Allessandris and defensive line coach Tim Krumrie. Many fans also hope defensive coordinator Clancy Pendergast will be replaced, possibly by former Cleveland head coach Romeo Crennel.

Haley was noncommittal about Crennel and Pendergast.

"No conversations in that order to this point," he said.

The emergence of running back Jamaal Charles, voted the team's MVP, gives the offense something to build on next year.

"I really believe we were able to lay a foundation for the Kansas City Chiefs," Haley said. "We were able to set expectations for our players of what's expected of them both schematically and offseason, in season and practice -- the way we're going to do things as a team on a consistent basis. I believe that foundation was laid.

"It was a very difficult year, a year we were able to make progress, as evidenced by the way the season wound down."

The Chiefs are expected to be busy in the offseason trying to fill gaping needs, including defensive back, wide receiver, linebacker, defensive line and tight end.

They pick fifth in April's draft. The could have picked third, but instead ended Haley's rookie year on a rousing high by beating Denver 44-24 in the season finale.

Now they should hire Mangino as the defensive coordinator and make THEM lose 800 pounds.

Matt Cassel just got WAY better.

Don't forget that Pioli is the Don of this franchise and Cassel is his guy. Weis will work his QB magic on Cassel and make him one of the better QBs in the league.

Cassel didn't get traded. Weis was in New England when he was drafted.

However, if golden tate falls to the second round, then he will be in a chiefs uniform.

I hope not. Its already bad enough we're turning into the Pats lite, but I don't want to be the Pats/Fighting Irish lite

I wouldnt mind golden tate if he falls to our 2nd pick of the 2nd round. But only if we address OL and D heavily with our other picks and FA.

Yeah, QB doesn't seem to be a glaring bad spot- not like safety, NT, FB, a pass-rushing OLB, and OL guys.

I agree

The OL is still priority #1 IMO regardless of the Waters interview.

The Chiefs are expected to be busy in the offseason trying to fill gaping needs, including defensive back, wide receiver, linebacker, defensive line and tight end.I find it surprising that Williamson doen't even mention OL in this. That said, I kind of agree. We've all seen the last 6 games stats (8 sacks in the last 6 games I think it was). It's definitely not our #1 priority seeing that our pass and run defenses were pretty porous throughout the season, and our WRs couldn't catch passes. In order, I think our biggest needs are:

1.) Safety - poor safety play shows in both the pass and run game
2.) MLB - again, another huge contributor to pass and run game
3.) WRs - the drops, need I say more?

I think the talent is there on the DL, but we could use the addition of a solid NT to plug the middle.

I'm looking forward to this new Chiefs regime. The coaching names are certainly there, now we need the talent in front of them to get some results. The organization is going to finally get out of its losing ways brought on by the CP/Herm regime. If anything else, this hiring will certainly have me renewing my season tickets.

EDIT: POST #100!!! hahaha

I found it interesting that in video on the page they went thru the top 5 picks of the draft
1) Suh (DE) Nebraska
2) McCoy (DE) Oklahoma
3) Berry (S) Tennesee
4) Bradford (QB) Oklahoma
5) Anthony Davis (OT) Rutgers

Then after that the commentator went on to say he could see us picking one of the three good OT's out there and mentioned Okung and someone else that I can't remember now. Another note he did say that this draft was deep in good OT's and that Davis' numbers would sky rocket when people start paying attention to him between now and draft day.

Oh and welcome to KC Mr. Weis, bring your A game good sir!

Weis was gone before Cassel got drafted by Belichick in NE.

I like the hire of Weis. The hiring of Crennel would make me much happier. Great job Scott!

Pioli continues to try to make the changes necessary to win. If they make a change at DC and get Crennel then I think next year's Chiefs will be MUCH better regardless of the players we bring in during the offseason.

YEAH!!

This is awsome news, I also just read this and went to the Iowa Hawkeyes website to validate this,
Iowa's Bryan Bulaga Will Enter 2010 NFL Draft (http://www.hawkeyesports.com/sports/m-footbl/spec-rel/010610aac.html)
The job he did in the Orange bowl last night impressed the hell outta me. He would make our oline better instantly.

Won't happen. Haley has stated that Weis is in his inner circle of people he turns to for advice. They have been in communication throughout the year as friends. You won't see as much of Haley acting like a doucher next year, he knows the cameras always on.

He got better at cutting that out throughout this season. I was never that opposed to him getting on his players but he did a better job of not doing it as much at least in front of the camras as the season went on.

Thing that excites me the most about all of this is.... just getting Weis in cool, if we get Crennel too even better, but having the combination of the two makes "playing for the Chiefs" a lot more attractive. You could see a higher caliber class of free agents WANTING to come play in KC.
Right on.
