Why do they use different balls for the kick offs and such and why can't the kickers get the balls until right before kickoff?

(I know the answer but lets see what other people say)

Doesn't it have to do with the air pressure in the ball?

They use a ball called the K-ball. It is a harder newer ball. Kickers can control it better. Come to think of it maybe Medlock is not using one.

Change air pressure, make ball slick, etc.

Part of what kickers liked to do was leave the ball in a vice overnight with the pointed ends pushed in to make the ball slightly "rounder"...also soaking it in certain solutions would make it have different effects off the foot or in the air. Kickers all had their way of doctoring the ball, that has been essentially taken away since the "k-ball" was introduced.

Read this article...it covers some of the "history" of the k-ball...(Disclaimer: it is posted on much ridiculed source of sports news)
