We caught wind of a report on Wednesday evening that the Chiefs (http://www.sbnation.com/nfl/teams/KAN) had waived tight end Brad Cottam (http://www.sbnation.com/nfl/players/34465/Brad_Cottam).
After a little research (http://www.arrowheadpride.com/2010/7/29/1593850/chiefs-te-brad-cottam-may-not-be?utm_source=twitterfeed&utm_medium=twitter&utm_term=%23chiefs), we found out that the Chiefs had waived/injured him meaning he would hit the waiver wire and, if he went unclaimed, would return to the Chiefs.
And that's exactly what happened as the Chiefs announced Cottam has been placed on reserve/PUP (http://www.arrowheadpride.com/2010/7/29/1593850/chiefs-te-brad-cottam-may-not-be?utm_source=twitterfeed&utm_medium=twitter&utm_term=%23chiefs).
He'll be out for at least the first six weeks of the regular season but I wouldn't look for him to play in 2010.
The key to doing this particular transaction is that Cottam won't count against the roster so the Chiefs can sign someone to take his place (which they already did with tight end Leroy Banks).
Cottam suffered a neck injury in week 14 last year which caused him to end the season on injured reserve. Since IR doesn't carry over from year to year, and the Chiefs wanted to retain his rights, they had to designate him as waived/injured so he could go through the waiver process and return to the team.
The Chiefs now retain Cottam's rights.

I hope he won't take up a roster spot, though I doubt it since he is on the PUP list.

Sucks for him, he seems to have a bit of potential.

He won't count towards the roster unless he comes off the PUP list and is cleared to play. I think he has like 6 weeks to get healthy, he then can practice for two weeks to determine if he is healthy in which the team can either put him on the active roster or declare him on IR for the remainder of the season with no hit to the roster.
