I was shocked months ago when I saw Chiefs fans raving about this guy. For my money (as a bigger college fan than pro fan) Stanzi is just plain bad. He is the #1 reason why Iowa won 7 games last year when they were slated for 10-12. I do not get why people are excited about this pick Woulda rather traded it for future considerations. As down as I am on Cassel I'd rather him any day than Stanzi.

Mel Kiper raved about him today on ESPN. He said he believes he'll have the best career out of all of the QBs taken in this draft. He went on record saying that. He believes that in 4 or 5 years he can develop into our QBOTF. Anyway you look at, we spent a low draft pick on him, so it's not like he cost us a lot. He has potential obviously and Pioli certainly has a history at finding late round steals at QB. This was a low risk, high reward pick for us. The ship has sailed for Brodie. It's time for us to find someone else that still has potential to develop. Stanzi is certainly that guy.

I listened to Kiper rave about Clausen all last offseason as well and watched him fall to the second round only to have such a bad year that the panthers wrote him off and picked newton this year.

I do not say this because I don't believe in Stanzi... I don't value Kipers evaluations on talent at all.

I suppose the best thing I can say about it is that it is indeed a low risk pick. My fear is more that we a bunch of stock in this guy for a while. I think he'll be a bigger flop than Jamarcus Russell.

i love the pick he has the intangibles to be a good quarterback in the nfl. let jim zorn coach him up for a year or two. let him follow cassels leadership.and at worst he will be a very good backup for a fith round pick

theres a huge difference between 1st overall and 135th pick...maybe you plain just dont like the guy, and thats fine if you dont, but statements like that are silly

I understand he played a role in some of their losses last season but I don't think that is a good reason to say that he can't be a good QB. He has the intangibles to be a good QB and his stats for last season were pretty good plus he was a fifth round pick so its not a big deal if he doesn't pan out. Also without him they wouldn't have been slated to win that many games in the first place and they won 8 games last year not 7.

Stanzi was drafted to be a backup qb. Nothing else. Spending a 5th rd pick on a college kid that has played in a pro system is not a bad pick IMO.

I don't think we should read into this too much.... He is coming in as a late round pick to be our backup and if he works out to be more he does, if not no big loss.

Pioli stated that he believes you should try to draft a QB every year in an attempt to develop them. He said he didn't feel like we were in a position to have that luxury the past two years, but now feels like we can start doing this, so don't be surprised to see us start taking at least 1 QB per draft going forward.

Wow...I'm shocked that people are down on the Stanzi pick at all. Stanzi is replacing Croyle and Croyle hasn't done a thing as a member of this organization other than lose games and get hurt. So Stanzi as a replacement for that can't do any worse no matter how hard he tries! Great pick!

At the moment, Stanzi is most likley our 3rd stringer, with Palko possibly replacing Croyle. I wouldn't even think about him replacing Cassel. Me on the other hand, I am ready to move on from the over throwing, two yard short of a first down, dumping of QB called Croyle.

when camp starts palko will be #2, good possibility by september stanzi is #2....either way is an upgrade from croyle.

I think all Chiefs fans should be happy with the Stanzi pick. Honestly, I would be happy with any backup qb that isn't hurt more often than our starter...

How good could be Stanzi in two years? Better than Croyle, for sure.
I saw a few videos, and he was a team leader in college, threw very accurate passes. I think he can develop, and if he doesn't, a new QB from next year draft should have the same opportunity.

Brodie Croyle is bad...If Stanzi is worse than him, oh well, we lost a 5th round pick trying to find a replacement for a crappy backup QB. Given Stanzi's intangibles, I think he will be a solid asset to the team.

i have seen stanzi beat my Nittany Lions twice in a row.
he is a good game manager who does not make many mistakes and rarely will cause his team to lose. he does not have a big arm but is more of a chad pennington style QB. he is an accurate short/medium passer with good mobility and good pocket awareness. he would be an ideal backup if he makes the transition to nfl game speed. and that no one knows yet.

I'am just happy that I'am not going to have to hear the Cassel VS Croyle debate any longer!:D

I think the biggest value in Stanzi is his similarity to Cassel. I hate when your backup has a completely different skill set than your starter. If he has to fill in for a couple of games, there is always a weird adjustment period.

Stanzi doesn't change the game plan if he comes in. It would remain a healthy dose of the run game with short to medium throws and occasionally chucking it long in the hope that Bowe's or Baldwin's big-play athleticism makes up for the lack of deep-ball accuracy from the QB.

I hammered Cassel before the trade and his first season, and for good reason. But last year he dusted himself off and had a pro bowl season.

The fact that you mentioned in your post that you are down on Cassel shows that you havent been paying attention.

This makes your opinion on Stanzi more than suspect IMO. Let the kid play as a backup before you start screaming about the sky falling. It cant be any worse than what we have had in any recent season.

This, plus it was a 5th round pick for a bowl winning QB not a big reach in my opinon

That's not possible.

Russell was picked #1 overall. In order to flop that big, Stanzi will have to reach that level of hype. He will need to have a great season at the NFL level for that now.

^^^^^^This is fact, and I couldn't be happier! This guy can't be any worse than Croyle. Plus now with Zorn as the QB coach, I think he has a great opportunity to learn the NFL system.

As big of a Chiefs fan, I am as big a Hawkeye fan and I could not wait for Stanzi to graduate. This kid flat loses winable games and hands off to running backs that above average behind an above average OL. Someone pull up the game film of the loss to Arizona and tell me he has "it". His senior year he gained some accuracy but his track record from the begining to me is down right scary. I walked into work after the draft and everybody knows who my teams are and my feelings for Stanzi and I flat got ribbed all day long. If this kid sees the field, lets hope he is handing off.

Yup. I guess we'll find out soon enough how good/bad he is. Saying he's garbage now is a little premature. If we drafted him with our 1st-3rd pick I could understand the *****ing, but a fifth round pick for a bowl winning qb!!!??? I just don't see.
