I don't like hearing that Haley is concerned about players showing up to camp out of shape. Just because you can't work out with the team doesn't mean you can't get in shape on your own.

I HATE the new 35 yd line kickoff rule! Bad decision to take the ball out.

Yeah. The defense looks alright considering it's mostly our 2nd string vs. their first string. This game doesn't mean much. I'm more concerned with the first string offense not moving the ball, (except for Jones).

hey fellas. that time of year again. this game looks terrible so far. looks like tampies throwin their starting line in there though and we threw in the noobs :p. anyway cant really gwt that upset ocer a preseason game but this is looking pretty low energy so far. a couple nice runs by jones (good to see the duck n weave actually work farther than the scrimmage line). eerything else is looking sloppy weve got a lot of work to do in a short amnt of time. of course its a diff game with bowe n charles in.

Yeah, it looks like Morris wanted to see where his starters are at, whereas Haley wants to protect his starters and evaluate the backups more. That's why we play 4 preseason games ans none of them count.

They look like they just don't give a damn. I am not that worried I doubt that in a real game we wouldn't have played all our starters and not give charles a carry or even throw a pass towards bowe. But next week they HAVE to put more effort into it.

Stanzi looked good at the beginning, but now he's getting no blocking and none of the receivers are getting open. I think he's playing with a lot of 4th stringers now. (Guys that won't make the team.)

A bunch of overplaying reads on the defense it seemed. I felt like I watched players trying to make the team than to play as a team.... if that makes any sense. Ha.

Nonetheless we have a lot of work to do but rest easy and know that we saw hardly any of our starters and the most bland basic play calling that we could have... and the bucs just teed off on us on D.

It didn't help matters any that the QBS had WAY to much time to throw the football. Hopefully with Hali Dorsey and Gregg in there that is better and the QBs will be under pressure. But it showed there is much to work on.

I think we can relax. Haley told the announcers yesterday that this was going to be a practice game and he was not using it to gauge how ready we are. He said he just wanted a few starters to go out and get a feel for the tempo. What I am concerned about is the fact that TB knew this and was going out for blood. I am angry that their coach would approach the game like that and that our coach would leave our guys vulnerable like that.

I wouldnt put much blame on coach Morris, he is prepping his team as well and cant be expected to change his philosophy just because our team isnt ready. I dont think the bucs exactly played a lights out game, we were just that bad.

TopekaRoy
08-13-2011, 01:48 PM
When I watch a preseason game, I'm mostly concerned with how our starters look against their starters. Since many of our starters didn't even play I learned very little there.

My secondary concern is the backups. Since they will be on the field when starters need to rest or if someone gets injured, I want to see them do well. This was a mixed bag. I saw some good and some very bad, but it was hard to get an accurate read since much of the time our backups were facing their starters.

I don't really care about our 3rd and 4th stringers since most of those players won't even be on the team when the regular season starts.

The preseason is rarely an accurate guage of how well a team will play in the regular season. It's a chance mostly for coaches to evaluate "borderline" players to decide will stay and who will be cut. The third preseason game is the only one that tells you much about the team and then only until the starters are taken out which is usually after the first or 2nd drive of the 2nd half.

The Colts usually do poorly in preseason. Last year the Bears went 0-4 in the preseason and finished the year with the best record in the NFC. The Chiefs clearly identified some areas that they need to work on (hanging on to the ball, kick/punt returns, blocking) but don't read too much into this one game, especially with the shortened preseason and the expanded (90 player) preseason roster. Losing always sucks, but this loss doesn't count. Let's work the bugs out now, so we are ready when it does count.

Here is a good recap of the game from The Associated Press via ESPN. Tampa Bay Buccaneers vs. Kansas City Chiefs - Recap - August 12, 2011 - ESPN (http://scores.espn.go.com/nfl/recap?gameId=310812012)

I found the following especially interesting:

Kansas City had barely worked out in pads, and coach Todd Haley decided not to scrimmage during camp, wary that too much hitting too early might result in unnecessary injuries.

It wasn't much surprise the Chiefs looked unprepared.
Matt Cassel (http://espn.go.com/nfl/player/_/id/8644/matt-cassel) didn't throw a pass. Running back Jamaal Charles (http://espn.go.com/nfl/player/_/id/11307/jamaal-charles) didn't have a carry. Wide receiver Dwayne Bowe (http://espn.go.com/nfl/player/_/id/10467/dwayne-bowe) didn't make a catch -- all for the most part by design.

Defensive end Tamba Hali (http://espn.go.com/nfl/player/_/id/9606/tamba-hali), who signed to a five-year, $60 million deal in training camp, looked awfully good standing on the sideline. Receiver Steve Breaston (http://espn.go.com/nfl/player/_/id/10585/steve-breaston), cornerback Brandon Flowers (http://espn.go.com/nfl/player/_/id/11269/brandon-flowers), defensive end Glenn Dorsey (http://espn.go.com/nfl/player/_/id/11239/glenn-dorsey), tight end Tony Moeaki (http://espn.go.com/nfl/player/_/id/13289/tony-moeaki) and linebacker Derrick Johnson (http://espn.go.com/nfl/player/_/id/8430/derrick-johnson) also didn't play.I just want to see improvement in weeks 2, 3 and 4. Remember it's not where you start. It's where you finish. (Just ask the Packers!)

I agree this isn't that big of a deal. This offseason was all messed up due to the lockout. Why take the risk of loseing a guy on a game that won't count next month. If they were not ready for the hits then it was a smart move but they better be ready quick. I do think that you do need some preseason action to be ready for the real games. Hopefully we see a much more prepared team next week.

I agree. The starters will play next week, probably for about a quarter, and we will get a much better feel for where they are at. They will still play a very bland vanilla offense and defense, but that's what coaches want to see in the preseason. They want to evaluate the basics - blocking, tackling, running throwing and catching. I think Haley will work them hard this week and we'll see much more "fight" in them. It's a process and I think they will be ready on week one of the regular season.

bottom line, missing 3 starters from "O" line, 1RB, 1 FB, 1 WR, 4 from the "D", limited play by the rest...this should have been expected and totaly irrelevant to what the final version of the 2012 CHIEFS will look like.
