View Full Version : I'm officially hitting the panic button...anyone else?

This does not look good for the Chiefies...so many issues, where to begin? I know it is the preseason, but there were many of the same problems surfacing last year.

They cant get off the field on 3rd down. They continually allow first downs time after time when they need stops on 3rd down. Last nights 3rd and 19 was particularly pathetic.

Offensive play calling is bad so far in the preseason, I know it is just preseason but it looks pathetic. It wasnt really all that great last year. There is no rythem. Their 2 best drives were in the Ravens game in a hurry-up.

Defense gets gashed on the runs plenty last year and short passing defense they just get torched. 5 yards here and there allows other teams to just march up and down the field.

No way am I even close to being sold on Cassel. He has shown very little to make me think he can lead this team to a Championship. He cant get out of trouble, his arm is average and his accuracy is barely above average. I cant really think of any time he has led the team down the field when they really needed a score. 31st ranked passing offense last year - that blows some major goat.

The O-line never looks dominant, more like barely adequate...then they let Waters go? WTF? Charles' quickness and the pathetic schedule is the only reason we finished 1st in rushing. Texan and Jags were the two worst, not to mention the Donkeys, Colts and Cardinals being dreadful on D. I forsee many sacks for the QB this year.

Lets face it...they did not beat a single good team last year. The first game the weather helped them a great deal, as did the Chargers poor special teams and a few great returns from the Chiefs. Rivers would win that game at the end 9 times out of 10, IMHO. What was their best win? At Seattle?? Not cool. Not cool at all. The Colts were the ONLY legitimate playoff team they even played.

I want to be optimistic, but I will take any bets that the chiefs even win 8 games. I think the final tally will be 6-10. I hate to say it, but unless they really take a HUGE step forward, Haley and Cassel should be considered for removal prior to 2012.

Step away from the big red button!

Repeat after me: "I (state your name)
"I(syn) understand that there are more people to evaluate"(90 this year). "I(syn) understand that the NFL just came out of prolonged hibernation due to the lockout". "I(syn) understand that Haley has a plan and it includes to not get anyone hurt". "I (syn) understand it is only preseason and things are more vanilla than the center of a Klondike bar"

repeat several times

At some point though, they need to show that scoring is in the playbook, vanilla or not.:bananen_smilies046:

Anything less than 10-6 will be devastating. The offensive line continues to be the biggest problem, but with the spread offense that Haley has developed, I'm hoping it keeps the better defenses from crushing us. I am puzzled why Haley and Pioli so neglected the O line. If they haven't sand-bagged this preseason, well, it may be a very long and painful season. I hope they have some secret plan that they are keeping close to the vest, because I am getting a little nervous-nowhere near panic yet.

Biggest issues I see is the O-line doesn't look dominate and the RB's are horrible at picking up the blitz. As well as the same issue as last year, Chiefs blitzing is WEAK! Seems like it gets picked up VERY easily by the other team.

As far as Cassel, he hasn't really gotten very many throws in yet so far. Teams are blitzing him the entire time, and well, like I stated above, the Chiefs line is getting dominated.

They will be OK! You haven't seen any of the real play calling yet. The defense on the first 2 drives go their asses handed to them I agree, and that needs looked at hard. But for the rest, you can't draw conclusions yet. I would enjoy seeing us be able to stop a f'n slant pass, I'll give you that!

I think people need to realize that it is just the preseason. In the preseason you can go 4-0 but finish 0-16 in the regular season. If we fall flat our first game then hit the panic button but until then I wouldn't worry.

I totally agree, thats why I prefaced my post with "These signs were showing last year"...plus Haley's play calling in 2010 and the weak schedule last year all are leaving me a bit gloomy.

The whole "Chiefs had an easy schedule last year" is kinda dumb. The Chargers had a similar schedule, had the #1 offense AND defense, and still managed to only go 9-7. Regardless of who you play, you STILL have to win the games.

It's a whole lot easier to beat The 7-9 Seahawks and the 7-9 Rams than it is to beat the 14-2 Patriots and 11-5 Jets.

Regardless of what The Chargers did, facing the weakest possible schedule is an advantage.

I am not ready to throw in any towel, or anything. But I have yet to see anything encouraging from this preseason.

But then... JC only has six carries in the three preseason games. So our real offense has not been used yet.

But then... JC only has six carries in the three preseason games. So our real offense has not been used yet.

Bingo! and Bowe only has 4 catches. This is not the offense we will see, at all, in the regular season.

There's a perfectly good reason why the Chiefs have not looked good (and why Haley is just 1-10) in preseason games. It's by design.

In the regular season, teams emphasize their strengths and make adjustments to minimize their weaknesses. Haley is using the preseason to expose the teams weaknesses. You see very basic vanilla offenses and defenses in preseason. This is partly so that you don't give anything away to your regular season opponents. But it is mostly done to evaluate your players.

In the regular season, you will use double teams, stunts and blitzes, throw away from certain CBs, attack weaknesses in your opponents defense, and so forth. But doing these things in the preseason, hides players weaknesses and makes it difficult for coaches to evaluate players accurately. They want to see the O line block one on one. They want to see the defense get penetration with a 4 man rush. They don't want to double team star receivers so they can see where the weak links are.

There are 90 players on this teams and 44 of them will be gone when the regular season starts. Because of the lockout, coaches have to evaluate more players in much less time than they normally do.

It's no secret that the Chiefs strength offensively is the run game. So what do they do in preseason? Throw the ball 39 times and run it 20 in game 3. They don't have to run the ball because they know what they have with that. They need to practice the passing game to get better and find receivers to complement Bowe. And preseason games are still just practices.

We haven't seen the real Chiefs, yet. Panic now? Half of these guys wont even make the team!

I dont get the 'By design' quote, what would be by design? Losing? Looking pathetic?

Please explain the 'expose the teams weakness thing? That makes no sense...so your saying Haley purposely shows where the Chiefs are weakest?! That would be more than dumb, then your allowing other teams to see than and exploit it in the regular season? Dont agree there.

Blitzes...they have been blitzing a ****-ton in the preseason, damn near as much as I would expect in the regular season, they are not getting to the QB fast enough, and all of them have torched the Chiefs on the hot read.

90 - 44.....so they are going with a 46 man roster this year?? :smile

It's all about evaluating players. They need to play guys that are weak in order to expose them so they know who to cut. I guess I wasn't clear there.

Blitzes...they have been blitzing a ****-ton in the preseason, damn near as much as I would expect in the regular season, they are not getting to the QB fast enough, and all of them have torched the Chiefs on the hot read.

They have been blitzing quite a bit, but their defensive sets have been pretty basic otherwise. In a 3-4 defense you usually have at least one of the linebackers rushing. They haven't been "game planning" to take specific players out of the game like they would in the regular season.

90 - 44.....so they are going with a 46 man roster this year?? :smile

The regular season roster limit is 53, this year but only 46 players can be active on game day. I had that wrong. Last year it was 45, but they added one and changed the rule so you can bring your starting QB back into the game after you have played your 3rd string QB. That's still a lot of players that will be gone and I'm sure you will agree that we haven't seen much of the regular season Chiefs starting offense.

I have. Which brings back my point of ANY GIVEN SUNDAY! You never know what's going to happen. Whether it be a off day for your star player, a key injury, or one team simply playing the best game of their season against one of the elite teams.

Who would've ever guessed in their right mind that the Chargers would have the #1 rated offense and defense and not even make the playoffs?

You never know what's going to happen is all I'm saying.

I'd feel some sort of compulsion to make the same claims in this thread if the OP wasn't the same regurgitated crap from every single post preseason game thread on here.

Mr panic-ey button hitter-er person go ahead and hit your panic button because you've got larger problems than the distraction of NFL football (like diminished logic).

The last head coach we had who worried about winning preseason games was Herm. That should be the only thing you really need to know. Haley isn't going to give anything away in the preseason. The only valuable tape our opponent in week1 will have on us will be from last year.

I'd hope that includes a full half with the starters. We have an early bye week after five games, and nine days between games until the home opener. We have clearly gone against the grain this "offseason" so something new for game four doesnt seem irrational.

At this point it appears the guys are in at least 90-95% football shape, and we clearly need to gel as a team some more. Give the guys on the bubble the second half to show if they have the "it" factor and call it good.

Guys, we have an extremely winnable next eight games. Detroit, SD twice, Indy, Minny, Oakland, Denver, Miami. SD is the only team that's remotely tough, and they usually start slow.

I mean, Haley is proving game-by-game that he isn't the answer, but we have enough talent on both sides of the ball that it's way too early to panic.

Meh. I lived through the Frank Ganz and Gunther Cunningham coaching eras... This is a minor bump.

I mean, we have some guys who could turn out to be amazing in the trenches in the next couple years- Asamoah, Hudson, Jerell Powe. But we need to continue to surround them with decent players. I think Dorsey is one, I'm not so sure about Tyson (but we'll see).

I think with Hali, Houston, and DJ, we are missing one more kick butt ILB (Is it Siler? Maybe), But there is a lot of talent on our team, so let's hope this coaching staff can utilize it.

Let's see how the season progresses- we might be pleasantly surprised.

SD- Is always the better team, and Rivers will have a fun time against our team without a strong secondary

Det- They got better and that D line will probably **** with our O line

Indy- maybe since they don't have manning but they still have the talent

Miami- depends on Henne and if we want to show up

Minn- AP ......that is all

Oak and Den- we always split games

SD- Is always the better team, and Rivers will have a fun time against our team without a strong secondary

Flowers, Carr, and Kendrick Lewis are good, but you're right that supplemented by Piscatelli and McGraw, it's not the strongest part of the D. We simply have to cover the TE against them. And if we fluster Rivers early with Hali and Houston, it could spell trouble for them.

Det- They got better and that D line will probably **** with our O line

I still think this is a winnable game. They do have a D-line, but if planned for, that can be worked around.

Indy- maybe since they don't have manning but they still have the talent

Without Manning, they are not nearly as good.

Miami- depends on Henne and if we want to show up

I think nearly every game depends on whether we show up or not. Maybe we will be hyped because of facing LJ.

Minn- AP ......that is all

Detroit got better, but Suh's banged up and Stafford's one good hit away from the IR at all times. A walk in the park, no. Winnable, yes.

SD is tough, but they're always suposed to be tough and always start out 3-5. They're slow starters who we can steal at least one from.

Indy is terrible minus Manning. Except for Wayne and Freeney, that is an awful team.

Miami looked good last night, but I'll believe it when I see it.

Minny - McNabb throwing for 39 yards. That is all.

Oak and Den - We didn't split last year. And eve if we split this year, being 5-4 at the end of the way isn't awful. At the very least, it'll keep us in contention for the division.

I am glad you are being optimistic but I do not see it that way. If we have piscatelli and or Jon Mcgraw out there, any team that has common sense will just pick on them all day. Then not to mention it we cannot stop the run. A good dose of Best and Calvin Johnson will equal another loss for the Chiefs. It is hard for me to say it but I do not see the Chiefs making 6-10.
Eric Berry is the most valuable player to this Chiefs team. He is not just a great safety, he was also our team leader. Not to mention that his back ups are Jon Mcgraw and piscatelli which just kills us. Has everybody forgot how bad the Denver Broncos torched us when Kendrick Lewis was out and Jon Mcgraw was in?
