Calvin Johnson is active for today's game. He will be playing on an injured ankle. Let's hope that slows him down a bit.

Unfortunately, I think they're gonna kill us. That D line is too good, and Cassel is apparently a scared rabbit in the pocket. The Lions don't have much of a secondary, however. If our line can step up a notch, and if Cassel can stand strong in the pocket, we might stand a chance.

edit: For the poor, out of market, or whatever...

lets see how well we've prepared since last week. yes we have some key injuries but these should be no excuse for humiliating losses, particularly against teams with losing records last year. I realize the lions are a team on the turnaround (they looked like they were playing well even last year, just barely losing most games they lost early in the season), this should still be a winnable game for us. However its a road game, and if we dont even show up, i think we can start prepping ourselves for the worst yet to come for the rest of the season. Heres hoping we can turn around a winless season thus far (yes im including preseason).

matthewschiefs
09-18-2011, 02:06 PM
there having no problem with the short passing game so far. And the Chiefs are missing some tackles not a great start.

iratefan
09-18-2011, 02:07 PM
right off the bat, we're giving receivers freaking 10 yards space. 10 yards space! why cover them at all?

matthewschiefs
09-18-2011, 02:07 PM
Maybe that was incomplete?

iratefan
09-18-2011, 02:08 PM

Hayvern
09-18-2011, 02:15 PM
Seriously, these refs are out to get the Chiefs today, those fouls, they are overlooking tons of penalties against the Chiefs today

09-18-2011, 02:16 PM

azchiefsfan
09-18-2011, 02:16 PM
The refs have chosen who is going to win this game already. I have watched Hali get TACKLED 3 times from behind so far and no call.

iratefan
09-18-2011, 02:17 PM
KCraised - that holding call doesnt get any more blatant than that. if youre not calling that holding, then you never will.

kcnation
09-18-2011, 02:18 PM

iratefan
09-18-2011, 02:22 PM
im way behind on the lag :( - i was going to comment before i saw the offense come on the field that i had wondered if haley made some sort of statement of the lack of potency in his offense by wanting the D to go out on the field first, because he didnt want a 3 and out off the bat to demoralize the team from the get go.

09-18-2011, 02:27 PM
Hey guys, this is the Lions fan from earlier this week. I REALLY hope Charles is ok. That sucks when a good young player gets hurt. I hope it isn't anything serious, like someone said, a hyperextension.

Man, that sucks.

Yea, but I don't like how he went down. Going down without being touched is not good

matthewschiefs
09-18-2011, 02:31 PM
Good job there by the D. Now lets get the lead offense.

iratefan
09-18-2011, 02:32 PM
loyalchief91 - if you recall last season, Charles really stepped up and showed everyone what a gem he was after Mccluster's injury. Hopefully he can step up and fill in for charles in the same way for some reciprocation.

09-18-2011, 03:01 PM
Another screen with no screen, that screen play still does not work

azchiefsfan
09-18-2011, 03:03 PM
Can't wait for another personal foul penalty. The refs will not call all the flagrant penalties on Detroit, but call every questionable thing they can against us. It's clear who the refs want to win.

iratefan
09-18-2011, 03:04 PM
terrible execution, matt. if youre going to throw a screen you have to lead the man, not throw behind him, forcing him to come back INTO coverage. ridiculous. cant even throw a freaking screen.

azchiefsfan
09-18-2011, 03:05 PM
They must have picked up the flag. I'm switching to the Cardinals. The rout has begun. The refs successfully wore out our D.

09-18-2011, 03:28 PM
this is the sad part about our offense - we cant even give Cassel half the protection time required to throw something long down the field. theres no chance for a quick long score in a minutes time.

Yeah. He's thrown three incomplete passes, and two of them go from receivers hands into the defenders' hands, so no QB has ever been so terrible.

iratefan
09-18-2011, 03:35 PM

IMO cASSel it's a System QB, not a Elite, not a Good QB.
Just a average QB who turns into a Nice QB into Pats kinda System that's why Weis make him look a nice QB, was his system not cASSel skills.

I just dont think he can keep "hidding" and keep saying that he needs 12 linemen, and 2 more seconds to throw a long pass.....
Whenever he steps back to throw, you sit back with a bad feeling about where that pass is ending :(
That's not how it should be with a starting QB!

I think he is an average qb but he wont be pulled even if it gets alittle worse for him down the road. Due to paying him so much money and Pioli pride. Its ok, this season is cooked so let him open it up and prove he is worth 63 mill. I like how Randy Cross said "he doesnt have a Stafford arm..."...ouch

That's not how it should be with a starting QB!

Twelve linemen?

So you are suggesting that the five we have are doing a good job?

This is exactly why the typical fan blames the QB for everything bad that happens to a football team.

The masses have no ability to look beyond one player.

"All he does is throw INTs!"

Yet both went off of receivers to get there, and he threw four times as many TDs as INTs last year, and all he does is throw INTs.

Every single ounce of logic disappears when most fans evaluate their team.

At least give cASSel a shock, sit him for the rest of the game, may be that will give him a lesson.

So sad we have to start to talk about getting a better QB when he suppose to be the that one.

When Charles was in the game, Detroit had to defend the run hard, which opened up the passing. Cassel is now taking all the heat as we have given up a serious run game. Yeah, Cassel just sucks. You Cassel haters really ought to learn a little game called football; it's a team sport and if the team is being shut down, one player can't save it or lose it.

I think the 2nd one was on Cassel the 1st Bowe has to make that catch. But Cassel can't keep overthorwing guys like he has been.

MOST IMPORTANT CASSEL STAT!

Cassel is 0-9 as a Chief when he throws 35+ times.

Cassel is 14-10 as a Chief when he throws 34 or less times.

Cassel is not a guy who will ever win a game on his arm. But he won't lose us games either. He is as good as the team around him, and efficient to a fault.

IMO QB is often relates to leadership and Cassel clearly is NOT a leader, not the type of QB who can take the whole team over his shoulders. He's a Nice system QB, that it. That's why he works for NE.

Cassel dosen't work out under pressure, look his expresion and he's not that kind of QB that under the darkest times looks a way to be the light at the end of the tunel.

QB it's about execution, could be a simple pass or going deep. Great QB not only Execute at perfection .. they got LEADERSHIP.

Cassel has won games on his arm. 2008, he was exceptional in a pass-heavy offense. But then, he had an offensive line then.

So, since he can't do what he has proven to be able to do, where did you place all the logic that you removed from that notion?

As for the number of attempts... That is exactly what you would expect from a running offense, isn't it?

You throw the ball a lot when you are losing big?

I agree. However, Cassel isn't the problem. His lack of performance is a symptom of a very broken offense, not a bad QB. I am starting to question the ability of Haley as a coach and Pioli to build a team around several superstars. Only game 2, but I am now getting a very sick feeling.

I don't think that Cassel is the problem either. But if this does keep up I think we have to give someone eles a shot. Maybe theres just someone who can better with what we have. I have supported Cassel and am not a Cassel hater but seeing this is what we saw a lot in the preseason and it's not getting much better I think it wouldn't be a bad move. If nothing eles it might light more of a fire under Cassel he gets pissed about being benched for a while and works even harder to get better. blaming this teams failure entirely on cassel IS ridiculous. im not sure thats what people here are doing. Its pretty clear, game time has proven for the past two seasons that we have a weak secondary. Too many games do we allow 300+ passing yards making everyone from QB's to tight ends look like geniuses. We have no threat to aid Hali on the pass rush, so opposing QB's have all day to allow their WR's to get open and downfield. Our O-line is probably the most pathetic thing ive seen in forever and is at the heart of the impotency of the offense. Doesnt help when your star WR's are dropping passes and Star(ter) QB is making terrible passes and that gives nothing for the run game to work with (when theyre not getting injured). We have a team of superstar talent but lack all of the basic fundamentals that makes a strong team.

It seems pretty obvious to me...

You play the guy with cracked ribs in week one, and he doesn't do well, then you change the entire offense from the #1 rushing team in The NFL to nothing to do but pass, and he doesn't do well, then you add in the loss of his OC, meaning running yet another new offense, and he struggles early...

But the whole time, you provide no pocket for him, have receivers deflecting passes, and provide a terrible defense, and obviously...

The QB just can't be any good because he is a top notch defense, RB, and WR.

How brilliant is that?

But, after he proved me wrong last season, I am not going to blame him for the worst defense I have ever watched, nor for injuries to Berry, Charles, himself, Moeaki, and now Hali.

Nor am I foolish enough to blame him for his receivers batting passes to defenders.

I simply realize what he has been taught for the past two years, and that circumstances have forced him into a situation of leading a type of offense that none of them has practiced.

I just realize that a defense allowing a TD at every opportunity is not generally the fault of a QB.

Cassel is not this team's solution nor its problem. He is a perfectly average, efficient QB. He is smart enough to grasp complex passing scemes, but not athletic or strong enough to win games on his arm. If he had a real OL or a real 2WR, he'd be doing much better. 3 blatant drops, and bowe dropped 2 easy ones. If everyone is calling for cassel's head then mr dwayne bowe must be called out to. in excusable both of his drops that I saw.

Well, true. That comment was directed to the absolute perfection throw that he threw to the other team. It was a thing of beauty and none of the Chiefs players could stop it from happening because they werent even close by. My "Play of the Day"

Allowing 89 points in two games changes your offense dramatically.

This.

Luck might take one look at our O-line and change his mind about entering the draft afterall.

STAT OF THE GAME:

Our two leading tacklers were our safeties Sabby Piscatelli and Jon McGraw with 18. Our secondary combined for 35 of our 60 tackles. This means we were getting no pressure on the QB and that our DBs are not respected.

So, by calling people average fans, you are calling yourself a superior fan? Look, we all love the Chiefs. We have that in common. On the field, Cassel is the Captain, the boss. The buck, on the field, stops with him. No one is blind to the fact that the dam has so many holes, you dont know where to start the blame...but, Cassel is lacking, that we can stay on the opposite end of agreement.

If the rest of the damn were holding up, meaning a solid defense, and a top-flight running game, then what Cassel had been doing would be pretty good.

Once we are down by more than a couple of TDs, we are no playing the type of offense that we are coaching and practicing. We are running experiments.

yeah and how many of those drives started inside our 30 because of turnovers?

Alright, of those, how many resulted TDs and how many in FGs?

A decent defense stands and delivers, even in the face of adversity.

Ours does not. Ours allows TDs, no matter where the possession starts at.

I hate to break it to you, but a whole lot of guys would go 11-5 with Moss, Welker, the Pats OL, and Belicheck. 2008 was a good year from Cassel, but it's delusional to pretend that he was the Pats offense's engine that year. He was along for the ride.

That said, he's a decent QB. I'm glad we traded a 2nd for him. I wish he had a real OL, 2WR, and OC. But I'm not going to pretend he's a top QB in the NFL. He's not.

Your speculation that a lot of QBs could win with their arms on that team includes Matt Cassel.

Wich disproves a great part of your assessment of Cassel.

Was it a great situation to be in?

Yes. You are not bringing me any new information with that.

But to say that he can't do what he has already proven that he can is erroneous.

Beyond that, I think you are a very football savvy individual.

I just disagree with that particular statement, due to the overwhelming evidence against it.

Albert was back in the game a play, or two, later.

I didn't hear about Hali.

I don't think you understand what I mean by "win a game on his arm." I don't mean that he can't lead a passing attack. He showed last year that he could lead an intermediate passing attack with a limited supporting cast. He showed in 2008 that he can throw for a lot of years with a phenomenal supporting cast.

I mean that Cassel will not win games if he is the best offensive player player on the field. Manning, Brady, Brees, Roethlisberger - they can.

And thank you for the compliment.

So then, you are aware that it is wild speculation to say that, right?

Myself, I think he is without hope on the current Chiefs squad, as we continue to build around a running game, and refuse to build a passing team.

But guessing that he couldn't be great in the right situation is like claiming to know how rainfall on Venus effects some hill that we can't even see, due to density of atmosphere.

It's a major reach, and, as speculations go, is undeterminable.

Why? We see how Cassel does with good, healthy skill players and a good-to-decent line, and how he does with bad OL and bad, injured skill players. He does well with good teams and bad with bad teams. There's no shame in that. Guys like Brad Johnson, Trent Dilfer, Jeff Hostetler, and Matt Hasselbeck made/won Super Bowls like that.

I agree. I cannot comprehend why we haven't signed a real RT. Or why we didn't retain Waters. Maybe we're just cheap and run on the cheap.

I never said he couldn't be great. He was great in 2010. Our whole team was great, or at least played great. There's a correlation between the greatness of Cassel and the greatness of the team around him. Or lack thereof.

Cassel has played a decent game today for a guy who is supposed to be heading the #1 rushing offense in The NFL.

Two INTs, both bouncing off of receivers, and a fumble? (Fumble? With the amazing protection The Chiefs' O-line has?)

Oh, by the way, why has Matt Cassel been injuring our best players on both sides of the ball?

What a d***! And to do it with cracked ribs?
Let me get this straight. So you are content with a game manager that just hands the ball off? For $10 mil a year and a second round trade off I expect more..Shame on you for having pathetic standards for the starting QB.

Why do people care how much Cassel makes? Is he overpaid? Yes. Are we still $30M under the cap? Yes. How much he makes doesn't impact the team at all!

And Cassel/Vrabel was worth the 2nd rounder.

No. But that is what our staff has been coaching him for.

Had we spent the past two years trying to form some fast-paced passing offense, or even a balanced attack, then I would be far more critical of Cassel's actual body of work for these two games.

But, that has not been the case.

And, he earned every cent of his pay last season, so I am not going to join the mob mentality, that he is terrible, just because the team has been as bad as any team I have ever seen in consecutive games.

So, what it seems that you are saying now, despite what you actually said, is that he is incapable of being a top passer on the current team?

That would still be speculation, as he has not really been given an environment to do so yet.

So far, we have gone into both games with a gameplan to run the ball, and play tough defense to keep the score low. And, Cassel has been practicing to run that offense, then having everything fall apart.

If we change our strategy, and start running an offense that is more geared for what has been required, we may see something different.

Not to mention, it has only been two games.

Right now, defense, injuries, gameplanning, and turnovers are making it impossible to run our offense as intended.

No doubt some major changes are going to have to happen. But, until we are entering games with the concept of calling plays to have Cassel show what he can do, Cassel doesn't have much of a chance.

The situation he has been dealt these first two games are such that I don't think Brady, Manning, Brees, Rivers, or anyone else is going to be successful.

Maybe he will prove unable to lead the team in the way I think you are talking about.

But, considering the hand he has been dealt so far, I don't see how such a statement can be supported.

Myself, after how Cassel made a liar of me last year, I will have to give him a fair chance to show rather or not he is capable of being "that guy".

What????? It absolutely does! It Means you are dedicating a massive sum of money on a specific player. He is not close to justifying it or earning it. By dedicating that mammoth amount to him, Your mindset changes and you very possibly follow by pursuing different free agents than you might have and so forth. If you spend this much on "x", i might not be able to afford "Y". So we will settle for a less quality player, to make up for paying
matt a massive amount.
Say you stuck with a Thigpen or a Brodie Croyle on the cheap for a season or 2, these faces on our team could be very different.

He played well enough over a full sixteen game schedule to warrant the contract numbers.

Two games this season, where he hasn't played nearly as bad as the defense, does not make your case.

And having $33 Million in leftover cap space really nullifies what any individual is making.

His contract is not, in the least, keeping this team from paying other talent.

So, explain this to me....if we are 33 million under cap, why didnt we spend it on more premier players? Since money is no object and doesnt really sound like its an issue in player choice?

And I do understand he played behind an unbelievable team and got paid for how his abilities came across from all that fantastic support and it misrepresented his abilities. Thats not his fault and im not blaming him for accepting all that $$$. I know I would....lol
