ESPN Preview (http://scores.espn.go.com/nfl/nflpreview?gameId=311121017)

From general manager Scott Pioli and defensive coordinator Romeo Crennel to injured quarterback Matt Cassel (http://espn.go.com/nfl/player/_/id/8644/matt-cassel), the Kansas City Chiefs (http://espn.go.com/nfl/team/_/name/kc/kansas-city-chiefs) have plenty of connections to the New England Patriots (http://espn.go.com/nfl/team/_/name/ne/new-england-patriots).
On-field success isn't currently one of them.

Coming off a critical road victory that left them alone atop the AFC East, the Patriots return to Foxborough on Monday night to face a reeling Chiefs team that will have unproven Tyler Palko (http://espn.go.com/nfl/player/_/id/10719/tyler-palko) under center.

As Bill Belichick's czar of player personnel, Pioli helped build the Patriots (6-3) into a powerhouse last decade before coming to Kansas City in 2009.

Pioli traded for Cassel -- who emerged in 2008 with New England after then-Chiefs safety Bernard Pollard (http://espn.go.com/nfl/player/_/id/9640/bernard-pollard) ended Tom Brady (http://espn.go.com/nfl/player/_/id/2330/tom-brady)'s season with a hit to his knee in the season opener -- and prior to 2010, hired Crennel, New England's defensive coordinator during its run of three Super Bowl victories in four seasons.

Cassel had a Pro Bowl season in 2010 and Kansas City rode an improved defense under Crennel to a surprising AFC West title, but a repeat playoff berth is looking unlikely. After bouncing back from an 0-3 start with four straight wins, the Chiefs were outscored 48-13 in consecutive home losses to Miami and Denver.

To make matters worse, Cassel suffered what coach Todd Haley called a "significant" hand injury in last Sunday's 17-10 loss to the Broncos and could miss the remainder of the season after undergoing surgery Monday.

Palko, who's thrown 13 NFL passes -- 26 fewer than Cassel had when he took over for Brady in 2008 -- will be under center for the foreseeable future.

"Tyler is the next in line, and he's done a terrific job, like I said, of keeping himself ready," Haley said. "That's what the No. 2 quarterback has to do, because you don't know. At a moment's notice, you could be in there playing, just like any other position."

Despite having been outscored 157-40 in their losses, the Chiefs (4-5) are still just a game out in the West.

The Patriots, meanwhile, have first place in the East all to themselves -- a reality that was tough to imagine after back-to-back losses to Pittsburgh and the New York Giants (http://espn.go.com/nfl/team/_/name/nyg/new-york-giants) left them tied with Buffalo and the New York Jets (http://espn.go.com/nfl/team/_/name/nyj/new-york-jets).

Facing the possibility of the franchise's first three-game skid in a decade, New England responded last Sunday night as Brady threw for 329 yards and three touchdowns in a 37-16 victory over the Jets.

"No matter what happened last week, whether we won, lost, at home or on the road or in London, it doesn't matter. Once that game is over we have to put it behind us," Belichick said. "Now it's about preparing for Kansas City, what they do, what their schemes are, what their players are, what their tendencies are in certain coaching decision situations that we'll have to make."

This will be the first time Brady has faced the Chiefs since the 2008 opener, and only his second meeting against Crennel. Brady threw for 265 yards and three TDs in a 34-17 win over Cleveland in 2007, when Crennel was the Browns head coach.

"It's a very good group and because they're very well coached they're rarely in a bad position," Brady said of a Chiefs team that ranks 22nd in total defense allowing 364.3 yards per game. "In order to make plays, you have to run good routes, you have to make good throws, you have to pass protect against one of the best pass rushers that we face in (Tamba) Hali."

Hali has six of Kansas City's league-low nine sacks, but even if the Chiefs can get outside pressure, Brady should be able to find his tight ends. Rob Gronkowski (http://espn.go.com/nfl/player/_/id/13229/rob-gronkowski) has 16 catches for 214 yards and three TDs the past two weeks, while Aaron Hernandez (http://espn.go.com/nfl/player/_/id/13230/aaron-hernandez) remains another of Brady's favorite targets.

While the ability of the Patriots' offense to score has rarely been in question, the NFL's lowest-ranked defense's chances of stopping anyone certainly were before facing the Jets.

But New England's front constantly pressured Mark Sanchez (http://espn.go.com/nfl/player/_/id/12482/mark-sanchez) -- defensive end Andre Carter (http://espn.go.com/nfl/player/_/id/2555/andre-carter) had four sacks -- and helped take some of the heat off a makeshift secondary.

That unit, however, will likely be without its top player for a few games. Cornerback Devin McCourty (http://espn.go.com/nfl/player/_/id/13236/devin-mccourty) suffered a right shoulder injury against the Jets and could miss a few weeks, while safety Patrick Chung (http://espn.go.com/nfl/player/_/id/12527/patrick-chung) is questionable after sitting out last Sunday with a foot injury.

Those injuries could leave the Patriots with few answers against Chiefs wideout Dwayne Bowe (http://espn.go.com/nfl/player/_/id/10467/dwayne-bowe), whose 19 receiving TDs since the start of 2010 trail only Detroit's Calvin Johnson (http://espn.go.com/nfl/player/_/id/10447/calvin-johnson) (23).

Bowe, however, has gone four games without finding the end zone, a drought that could continue with the inexperienced Palko taking the snaps.

That's not something Belichick is counting on.
"I think that Palko can do everything that he needs to do from what Matt has done," he said. "I wouldn't expect them to deviate too far from what they like to do."

The Patriots, who have won four straight against the Chiefs in Foxborough, are trying to avoid their first consecutive home losses with Brady under center since November 2006.

Exactly.

If we want to beat them, we will have to outscore them. Take advantage of their weak Defense.

I don't have a good feeling about tonight's game, but there is some reason to have hope.

Defensively, the Pats are ranked dead last in the NFL and last against the pass, although part of that may be because they blow out teams and go into a soft prevent defense at the end of games. They are without both of their starting safetys but will Palko be able to take advantage of that in his first NFL start?

Offensively the Pats are hard to stop, but they are only ranked 19th rushing the ball and pass defense would normally be our strength, but our secondary is banged up as well.

I hope to be pleasantly surprised, tonight but I'm predicting a New England blowout 35-10. It could be worse, but I think the Pats will back off in the 4th quarter if they are way ahead.

I really hope I'm wrong.

This is what game preparation looks like. This is what the Chiefs should look like every week. There's no excuses blaming injuries. Both the offensive and defensive schemes look prepared tonight.

If the coaching staff can prepare against an elite team and QB like the Patriots, there's no reason why they can't do it week in and week out against Matt Moore and Tim Tebow.

This game only reaffirms how poor the coaching staff is on a weekly basis. It's infuriating to see how well the Chiefs can play when they're been prepared to perform.

Unless he is hit as he grabs it, then he is supposed to catch that ball.

I thought the Chiefs would be down about 20-3 by now so it's a good first half for them. Let's eliminate the mistakes and penalties and with a few breaks the Chiefs could still win this game.

Dont forget that Cassel apparently puts the ball in the wrong spot which causes our receivers to get lit up. Ive seen Palko set 3 receivers up to get destroyed so far.

The offensive game planning is doing decently so far.

He's 10-14 for 111 yds right now so he's only had 4 incompletions, and one of those was tipped for an INT. I'm not saying Cassel wouldn't have done just as well or better, but give the guy a chance. It's only his first start.

I think he's done pretty good, so far.

I like Palko.

I think he has a good head on his shoulders, and he seems to be quite confident, for a guy in the situation he is in.

As far as I'm concerned, he looks pretty good, so far.

As for others who seem to like him, I'd have to say that a big reason for some of that popularity is just that he is not Matt Cassel.

The main reason that I want him in isn't because Palko is so bad. It's because this season has clearly been a lost one. The injuries, lockout,Lack of having a good head coach IMO all have hurt. It's time like these you need to see what your rookie class has and whos going to be a long term player. The best way to do that with Stanzi is to let him play. Maybe he is.

The problem with throwing Stanzi in right now, is that he has spent the whole season as the third string QB. That means he has been getting 3rd string practice. Which means he probably has played very little with the starters, IF he got ANY snaps at all before Cassel was hurt. As the third stringer, it means he also was getting the least amount of attention from the coaching staff. I honestly feel like he would not be prepared to run an offense for a couple weeks. Any ability he actually does have would be masked by his inexperience even in practice. You basically would be seeing what raw talent he had out of college, which we already saw in the preseason.

I say give Palko the start for a couple weeks at least. He knows the offense the best. In practice give them almost equal share of the snaps. Once you are convinced that Stanzi knows the offense and the players abilities/speed, then maybe give him the reigns for a couple of weeks.

Yes, I know I was on the "start Stanzi now" bandwagon initially, and I will admit that I was wrong after thinking about it a little more.

The reason is why we brought guys in. Palko was brought in to be a backup. Stanzi was brought in to devolpe and possibley be a qb for us long term. To me that's a big reason why at some point we need to see what Stanzi can do.

The Chiefs actually played better than I thought they would, but unfortunately the result was about what I expected. Penalties and mistakes are killing this team.

Palko played pretty well except for a few bad decisions, but he needs to do a better job of looking off defenders. Hopefully the Chiefs will work on that in practice.

The defense played pretty well considering how explosive the Pats offense is. That gives me a little hope for the near future.

What killed us was the 2 quick scores to start the 2nd half. Without those this game could have turned out much differently.

The bottom line is, it's another blowout, but there are things that the Chiefs can work on and correct, They are not that far away from being a good team, but they need to get better. I just want to see improvement form here on out. (and a win or two wouldn't hurt, either.)

C'mon man, Palko is not anywhere near accurate enough to be even a close to average quarterback in this league...All 3 picks, the underthrown ball to Bowe that should have been a touchdown...it was bad.

The one positive Palko has over Cassel is that he can stand in the pocket when pressure is coming, instead of tucking instantly and trying to run with it.

Yes I know it's one game, but I can safely say this is not the quarterback of the future. If you can't then I don't know what to tell you. Did you pay attention to any of his passes? No velocity, below average accuracy. These things come natural to a quarterback, they are not learned.

Did you watch Kyle Boller in the game against the Chiefs and come out of it saying he's the answer for the Raiders?

Stanzi is different to some extent, mostly because he's not a 27-year old undrafted journeyman. I have not seen Stanzi play at all, ever, so I can't make an evaluation. I am defeinitely hoping we get to see him sometime this year though so we can see what we have.

Palko has been around a while. This is his first start, but he has been on teams before and could not break into even the permanent backup role. At the start of this season, everyone had Stanzi and Palko at about a dead heat on who would be second string, there is nothing here.

My analysis after watching him last night and in the preseason is that he will never be close to a decent starter in the NFL. Any scout will tell you the same.

Oh of course, even though Cassel had better stats than almost everyone on that list last year. Please Mr. Professional, continue to coach us and the KC management. I don't know how they could have let a winner like you get past them.

I'm not offering to run the team, nor am I qualified too. I am capable of making non-homer assessments of players on this team, and offering my two cents on where we can get better. I'll say it again for the 3rd time and put my credibility on the line...Tyler Palko will never be a decent starter in the NFL.

So I was looking at Joe Montana's first game. He was 13 of 23 and 96 yards and lost the game. I guess San Francisco could safely say he wasn't the QB of the future, huh?

You can't compare a 23 yr old QB drafted in the third round to a 28 yr old undrafted journeyman QB. Palko has always been inaccurate and in all this time hasn't been able to break into the backup role until this year. To compare Palko to Montana is completely ludicrous.

I think where you two are missing my ONLY point that JoMo was shaky his first game. People were writing him off and Walsh took a lot of heat in that next off season for risking the teams future on such an inaccurate and shaky QB. Is Palko the next Montana? Of course not! But does he deserve a chance to prove what he is capable of? Of course!

Palko is going to get several chances this year unfortunately its against a gauntlet of good defenses. But I didn't miss your point I think you skimmed over mine and went right to the quoted post above. Palko HAS had a chance to prove what he is capable of. He's had since 2007 to prove himself and hasn't. I've seen him at training camp, in preseason games and his first start last night.

Look, bottom line I WANT Palko to succeed. I'd love to see him lead us to 10-6 by throwing the team on his shoulders and taking us there. He's just not going to do it as much as I'd like him to. You aren't the backup to the backup year after year and have that many teams miss his potential. He was the backup behind Brodie Croyle and that should be all that needs to be said.

I can get on board that line of logic. Sometimes a guy will falter his first few years and the catch fire when given a chance to start. Jeff Hostetler comes to mind. Remember the adage "a backup can't get you to the Super Bowl"? He did just that-AND WON! Now the chances for Palko to do that are slim and he had a world class team to help, so even that is a shaky comparison, I know.

Agreed, I think we both know better but here's to hoping!

The difference is, Palko isn't a rookie.

Not in my book. First start is a first start.

What did scouts have to say about Joe Montana, or Tom Brady?

Yes, I compared Palko to those guys. That's what happens to two similar people. They are compared to each other.

And, all of those people were rated low by scouts.

And, before you bother to label me as thinking Palko is God...

Nothing remotely close to that is going on here.

My opposition to your knee-jerk reaction of a player assessment means that I think it is far too early to suggest that you have any insight on Palko, other than "Scouts would agree with me".

We have seen one game, and some preseason time out of the guy.

I imagine his career will amount to nothing. But to act like it a fact is foolish.

He lacks arm strength and accuracy...Again, there's not much more to see. He's been in the league since 2007 and now sports a 5:15 TD:INT ratio when you include the preseason. The Chiefs cut him last year in favor of Brodie Croyle.

Joe Montana's Scouting Report

"He can thread the needle, but usually goes with his primary receiver and forces the ball to him even when he's in a crowd. He's a gutty, gambling, ****y type. Doesn't have great tools, but could eventually start."

Tom Brady Scouting Report:

Tom Brady Positives: Good height to see the field. Very poised and composed. Smart and alert. Can read coverages. Good accuracy and touch. Produces in big spots and in big games. Has some Brian Griese in him and is a gamer. Generally plays within himself. Team leader.

Negatives: Poor build. Very skinny and narrow. Ended the '99 season weighing 195 pounds and still looks like a rail at 211. Looks a little frail and lacks great physical stature and strength. Can get pushed down more easily than you'd like. Lacks mobility and ability to avoid the rush. Lacks a really strong arm. Can't drive the ball down the field and does not throw a really tight spiral. System-type player who can get exposed if he must ad-lib and do things on his own.

Brady and Montana both had their perceived weaknesses coming out of college, but they both had being very accurate in common. Tyler Palko has never shown he can be accurate and has an extremely weak arm. I'm sorry, but it's very apparent he has no future as an NFL starter, and only optimistic Chiefs' fans think otherwise. Remember, we're still talking about an undrafted player that has barely been able to make NFL rosters over the last 4 years.

It's ridiculous to call it "knee-jerk." I suppose it was "knee-jerk" by the Chiefs to cut him last year...Or "knee-jerk" by all 32 teams in 2008 to not even sign him. They hadn't even ever seen him start an NFL game!

And Stanzi was unable to beat that guy out for 2nd string?!?!?!

Must be the worst player of all time, ya think?

But how wrong was the scouting report on Tom Brady? WOW!

And the scouts didn't seem too accurate on Montana's future either.

Were you trying to prove the point that scouts often miss by astronomical margins? You could have looked into Ryan Leaf too.

Seems like your assessment of Palko is eerily similar to the negatives listed for Brady.

I am far from an optimist. But then, I am not trying to say that Palko is going to do anything.

What I am saying is that Palko has only ever started one game. And I saw some positives, to accompany the negatives.

If he can improve on some of those negatives, while capitalizing on his strengths, he has a far better chance of doing something, than what you seem willing to admit.
