SEPTEMBER 29 – OCTOBER 5

On paper all signs pointed up to a hotly contested game as both teams featured veteran QBs. But on October 4, 1998 Mother Nature had other ideas as the weather forecast called for heavy rain showers at gametime and throughout the game.
Seattle looked to beat the pending weather and used its defense to jump out to an early lead. Chiefs QB Rich Gannon was sacked and stripped by Seahawks DE Philip Daniels, who also recovered the loose ball at the Kansas City 16-yard line. RB Ricky Watters carried the ball three consecutive plays for 12 yards before the drive stalled. K Todd Peterson booted a 22-yard FG to give the Seahawks an early 3-0 lead.
With the skies darkening in the West, the Kansas City offense went to work. The Chiefs used a nine-play drive, featuring all running plays to methodically march down the field to set up a K Pete Stoyanovich 22-yard field goal. The two teams ended the first quarter the same way the game started – tied, but this time at 3-3.
Then it happened. The skies opened and started to dump rain on the crowd at Arrowhead Stadium as the officials ordered the teams to the locker rooms due to the lightening. The aisles on the concourse soon turned to rivers as the water rushed down the steps to the field. As the players sat inside, the water started to seep into the lockerroom forcing the players scrambling to keep their belongings dry.
After a 54-minute delay, the teams returned to the field to find a very different playing surface. Gone was the dry field of the first quarter. In its place was a flooded surface as nearly 3.6 inches of rain fell in Kansas City during the delay. The players were unsure of each step as a pool of water flew anytime someone tried to make a cut.
With a changed gameplan, the two teams had 7:10 left in the first half and the entire second half to see who could improve to 4-1. Kansas City took advantage first as the Gannon led offense perfectly executed the two-minute drill. The drive was capped with a four-yard TD run by Gannon to give the Chiefs a 10-3 lead at halftime.
Seattle kicked its second field goal of the game to move within 10-6 in the third quarter, but the Chiefs were not done. Gannon used his legs to score in the first half, but this time used his arm. He hit WR Andre Rison with an 80-yard touchdown pass to increase the Chiefs lead to 17-6. Neither team would score in the fourth quarter as the Chiefs improved to 4-1.

That was classic; I remember seeing DT just sitting down on the field while the rain came showering down on him.

I stayed dry. The lady next to me would have killed her boyfriend if we hadn't offered her some of our extra plastic tarp. :D

I was thinking that you had once told me that the lightening got pretty close to your vicinity.

That night I was in Lawrence and I saw the hand of God bend over an entire stand of trees.

It humbled me. That was an act of God.

Agreed, and it's the only time you'll ever see insurance companies acknowledge His existence; only to use Him as a way not to pay out.

That was a very astute comment.
