The Josh McDaniels-To-The-Chiefs Talk Has Dried Up - Arrowhead Pride (http://www.arrowheadpride.com/2012/1/5/2684394/josh-mcdaniels-kansas-city-chiefs)

One of the constants while tracking the Kansas City Chiefs (http://www.sbnation.com/nfl/teams/kansas-city-chiefs) coaching rumor mill has been Josh McDaniels. Whether he was coming here to be a head coach (he's not (http://www.kansascity.com/2012/01/01/3348468/chiefs-need-to-keep-crennel-and.html)) or in an offensive coordinator role, a lot of the rumor mill stuff has involved McDaniels coming to KC.
Lately, though, it seems the Josh McDaniels-to-KC talk has dried up, even as the offensive coordinator.
"I don't think Josh McDaniels is going to be an offensive coordinator in Kansas City," NFL Network's Michael Lombardi said on Wednesday (http://www.nfl.com/videos/nfl-network-around-the-league/09000d5d825b6ec9/Finding-the-next-head-honcho). "I think there will be some other opportunities down the road, probably shortly, for Josh McDaniels. No longer in St. Louis with the Rams being fired so I don't think Kansas City's in the cards."
McDaniels, as far as I know, hasn't technically been fired but the Rams recognized he could end up leaving (http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2012/football/nfl/wires/01/02/2020.ap.fbn.rams.spagnuolo.fired.5th.ld.writethru. 1553/index.html).
While Lombardi reports that McDaniels-to-KC is no longer expected to happen, he does still predict that Romeo Crennel will end up being the full-time head coach. Despite a couple (http://www.arrowheadpride.com/2012/1/4/2681476/kansas-city-chiefs-head-coach-green-bay-packers-joe-philbin) of the Chiefs coaching candidates (http://www.arrowheadpride.com/2012/1/4/2682006/jeff-fisher-kansas-city-chiefs-interview) getting out there, it seems like most everyone still believes Crennel will get that job.

It's now being reported that the Chiefs and Patriots are both looking to talk to Josh McDaniels.

The Rams still have Josh McDaniels under contract (http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2012/01/02/mcdaniels-remains-employed-in-st-louis/). They want him available should the team’s next head coach want to keep McDaniels on as offensive coordinator.
If Jeff Fisher was hired, it’s hard to imagine McDaniels sticking around. And he’s already received interest from a few of his previous bosses.
Bryan Burwell of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that the Chiefs and Patriots have reached out to the Rams (http://www.stltoday.com/sports/columns/round-two/will-mcdaniels-be-back-with-rams-in/article_f8fba558-37ca-11e1-b35d-0019bb30f31a.html) to seek permission to speak with McDaniels. It’s not known whether the Rams responded yet.
In the case of the Chiefs, the Rams wouldn’t really have a choice if Kansas City wanted to talk to McDaniels as a head coaching candidate. The Rams could prevent a lateral move to either place. The Patriots would presumably bring McDaniels back to be the team’s offensive coordinator with Bill O’Brien heading to Penn State.
McDaniels would have an interesting choice if he’s wanted in Kansas City and New England for coordinator jobs. Success would be easier to attain with the Patriots, but he may see a clearer path back to being a head coach in Kansas City.
