I really think this is the most possible signing for our backfield.

Don't think I would want Hillis because he seems to have attitude problems plus he would want big $$

and Micheal Bush would be nice, but he knows he could get starter money elsewhere, and would warrant that even if he came here

Understanding ebb and flow of frenzied free-agent period (http://www.nfl.com/news/story/09000d5d82789abc/article/understanding-ebb-and-flow-of-frenzied-freeagent-period)

Here's a good article that explains why we don't get caught up in the first 24 hours of Free Agency, and I really do think that Pioli believes in this method.

It basically states that Teams overspend in the first few days of Free Agency. If you sign someone within this time period, the agents know they hold the cards, and you need to be prepared to pay a handsome price tag. It is usually a bunch of high risk contracts (mainly because there is a-lot of money involved in these contracts, and if they don't work out, you're strapped)

The second tier of Free agents is what Pioli likes to go for. Lower risk regarding to money(contracts are not as large) but most of the prospects are capable of over achieving compared to the contracts they sign.

We have seen from teams like Washington, Philly, and Dallas, that making that big splash in the first 24hrs doesn't exactly always work out...

I'm not worried we haven't made a big splash, although I would like to see us nab Winston...Guys like Tolbert are in that second tier who we will see signs within the next few days

TopekaRoy

Excellent article. I highly recommend reading it.

This is a fun time of the year, but do not overreact to a team's big-ticket signings, or lack thereof. Remember, the last free-agent period gave birth to a nickname that haunted a certain franchise all season. Be patient, analytical and most of all objective with all the moves to come.

"Dream team?"

according to nfl.com the CHIEFS are interested in Winston [yea], Hillis, Tolbert, Carlson...which we knew, but NOT interested in Grubbs, or Jamaal Jackson. so it looks as though we are not going after a center or guard. That would mean [if we get Winston] Decastro would probably be our pick....or maybe Powe if he is there...or maybe someone else....on second thought i guess this news doesn't really help much.

I agree. That's a lot of money. Carr is worth it, but With Routt on our roster now, It would be hard for the Chiefs to justify matching it. I was hearing the Cowboys were offering $7 million per year and hoping the Chiefs would match it, but this is too high.

All I keep thinking is cool, we'll get a higher compensatory pick. No one really knows the formula for how they're given out. But last year if you were at 6.5 mil or higher you got a 3rd rounder. Carr (10 million a year) + Orton (not really sure, we'll say 3) - Routt (6.3) = 6.7 million or a 3rd rounder.

I'm sure we'll see some other signings and loses but at least we'll get something out of it.

I REALLY hope you're wrong. We're not far from winning our first playoff game in what seems like a million years.

It would just be WRONG not to fill some of our obvious needs with some QUALITY free agents.

We don't need to throw cash around like confetti--we're going to have our own FAs that we want to keep down the road--but we have a LOT going for us right now........weak division=opportunity to get homefield advantage....strong defense and a pretty good offense.

We need to fill 2 or 3 holes with QUALITY veterans and MAKE OUR RUN NOW!!!! A playoff win this year and then a Super Bowl appearance in '13 or '14.

It's time we stopped thinking about "making the playoffs" and started thinking about winning playoff games and making a run at the AFC Championship! :chiefs:

I just saw on Arrowhead Pride (http://www.arrowheadpride.com/2012/3/15/2874387/chiefs-jerricho-cotchery-free-agent#storyjump) that we are supposedly interested in Jerricho Cotchery

I mentioned bringing him in last off season. I would like the move if it wouldn't bring up a bidding war between us and the Jet's who are interested in bringing him back in, and well as the Steelers.

Think he would be a good mentor for some of our younger receivers, and would add a sure handed slot option to replace Urban and rotate with Breaston.

Grubbs and Nicks got an awful lot of money considering we have youth at those positions. If we dont sign winston im gonna be all sorts of pissed. If ur gonna compare living in miami to kc or denver u all r out of ur right mind, he took a home town discount and good for him i wish there were more like him in the nfl.

Our relative complacency thus far makes me wonder if we r gonna throw a huge contract for someone.....and secondly next yr is the year we have to spend 95% of the cap, is that correct? So do we get ro roll over what we dont spend for one more year.....may just be one more year of being cheap arses.

From what I've read you get to roll space from a previous year over indefinitely. I think that's a good idea because if we don't sign Bowe this year we've got Bowe, Albert AND Dorsey to try and resign next year. We're going to need all that money and probably then some.

From what I've read you get to roll space from a previous year over indefinitely. I think that's a good idea because if we don't sign Bowe this year we've got Bowe, Albert AND Dorsey to try and resign next year. We're going to need all that money and probably then some.

But next yr we will be forced to spend 95% of the cap so there wont be able to roll as much as this yr ir last.....or am i wrong. So we r just gonna be cheap this yr.

Again...this is what I'm just remembering. But it has to be 95% average over a 3 year span. So they can spend 80%, roll that forward, 80% roll even more forward and then just go nuts in the 3rd year and spend it all. I might be misunderstanding that too.

The Good thing about this...

Remember how everyone was SO SET on bringing him in last year??

Well we waited a year, and his market value is MUCH lower than last year..I would welcome this signing to rotate with Powe and Gordon.

Doesn't look like such a dumb idea that we didn't OVERPAY him last year, because we could grab him at a lower price now...

Because his price will be lower that what he was warranting last year, and he is among the best that is left when it comes to DT's, we have no one at NT except for Powe and Torribio which both have little to no experience.

Unless they plan to draft and start a rookie, I would look to add this guy for at least a veteran presence and hope He and Powe could carry the load

no need to over react, manning is simply taking his time to do what is best for him.......just as we all hope to have done what is best for the CHIEFS and screw the rest. we don't care about any other teams why should he. this will be his last shot at getting to the super bowl [not neccessarily this year] but his last team he plans to sign with. i know i would be the same way. i only hope who ever he signs with doesn't have to play us in the playoffs someday. he has always beaten us in the playoffs but we do well during the season against him.

Depth and depth I would be okay with either.

As per the Manning situation, it doesn't surprise me at all. Sure he wants a shot at the Super Bowl, every [player does, but one of the underlying things about him and why I would prefer his brother over him is his brother seems somewhat humble. All the talk about other top quarterbacks and Peyton being so humble... bah, he has always been a glory hog. His beginning years were all due to Marshall Faulk, he almost never credits him.

Are you serious??

Our Safety play was our weakest position on D last year, did you ever wonder why TE's and SLOT RECEIVERS TORE US UP ALL SEASON?

vs Bills : Chandler (An Average TE) had 5 rec for 63 yds and 2 TDs, as well as David Nedlson with 4 catches for 66 yards
vs Lions: Titus Young (slot reciever) 5rec 89 yds,
vs Vikings: Shancoe 6rec 68 yds
vs Chargers: Gates 4 rec 73 yds
vs Dolphins: Fasano 2 rec 38yds 2tds
vs Patriots: Gronkowski 4rec 96yds 2tds, Hernandez 4 rec 44yds
vs Bears: Kellen Davis 2 rec 40 yds
vs Jets: Dustin Keller 4 rec 44yds
vs Packers: Finely 3 rec 83 yds

My Point: A majority of our games we allowed opponents TE's or Slot receivers to be the teams LEADING or Close to leading receiver for that game. It is a weakness of ours and teams knew this and exploited it.

Donald Washington converting from a Corner to play safety, hasn't worked out that well.... We had Sabby Piscetelli (who probably will have a hard time getting on ANY roster until close to training camp), Quentin Lawrence (Who was a WR that didn't pan out), and Jon McGraw (who I like as a veteran presence and special teams leader, but am not fond of his safety play) and I like Reshard Langford, but he is a run stopping safety, not a coverage safety.

I view the safety position similar to our TE position...We have very talented starters, but after that...There's slim pickens, and just like Pioli made it a priority to find help at TE... (Pursuing Carlson, and signing Boss) We need to do the same with safety, especially since both Berry and Lewis are coming back from surgeries. If one goes down, we are in some trouble!

Yes I am serious. The Backups did better than you expect backups to do.

And, as the season progressed they got better, and better.

But I see not a single 100 yard game in all of the samples you brought to show how terrible they played.

Those numbers imply strong play from these guys. The only reason the position appeared to be such a weakness was because our backups were starting, and because our CBs were terrific.

I'm not being wishy-washy here, but I actually agree somewhat with both of you. We didn't give up 100+ yards to anyone but the yards per catch was ridiculously high in a lot of cases. Our back-ups did get better as the season progressed, but I think that was partly due to adjustments Crennel made to give them help.

Hopefully, they continue to improve this year, but I still think it would be a good idea to add depth. I wouldn't feel bad if Sabby lost his roster spot to a better player.

Did you not see the part in my post that metioned that just about every game, the opponents leading reciever, or close to leading reciever was their TE's or a slot reciever...Not their #1WR's..Our corners can shut down just about any receiver in the NFL (we will see with Routt)

But I am saying that teams knew our weakness on D was our safety play, and covering TE's, and they attacked it. Don't get me wrong, I think our Defense is the strength of our team, but I do feel we need to do something about our coverage on TE's and add safety depth, and coverage LB depth.

just because a TE doesn't have a 100+ yd receiving day doesn't mean he didn't have a good game...They took advantage of a weakness of our defense, and that's the impact it has on the games.

Bears sign ex-Trader RB Michael Bush.

Chicago Bears Sign Michael Bush; Matt Forte Not Happy About It (http://www.midwestsportsfans.com/2012/03/chicago-bears-sign-michael-bush-matt-forte-not-happy-about-it/)

This is the third year in a row the Bears have signed a solid backup for Forte. In 2010 it was Chester Taylor. Last year it was Marion Barber. (he will probably be released).

Forte has already threatened to hold out if they can't get a deal signed ...

Marion Barber, might not be a bad back to add here... Not that he's what he once was in dallas, but he can pound it, and catch out of the backfield similar to Hillis.

Couldn't complain about having him as a 3rd rb, although I think it would be more likely to draft a guy like Vick Balard in the 4th-5th. Wouldn't cause issues if the guy had to be on the practice squad, plus he is younger and fresher legs...

He (Barber) was good as a back-up for the Bears. When Forte got hurt and he had to be the primary back he didn't do well. I wouldn't mind seeing him come to KC for depth, but I don't think he would get much playing time now that we have Hillis.

Never Mind that. Saw on the ESPN ticker that he is retiring haha

That was quick!

Oh, well. No big loss. He helped my Bears out a little bit last year, but there are a lot of guys that can do what he did.

Well, for my money, getting Berry back fixes the depth problem by moving all of the other guys down on the depth chart.

Those guys were solid last season, with Berry out.
