Before anybody can regurgitate what someone else written, let me say this was a fantastic pick by the Chiefs. I would have preferred them get Glenn from UGA, but Allen is going to be phenomenal at OG. He's highly athletic and COULD provide a bridge to a different LT if Albert isn't re-signed.

Jeff Allen, offensive guard, Illinois (6-5, 315)
Allen was one of the NFP’s favorite linemen in this year's draft because his tape was as impressive as any tackle in the country. He lacks ideal size to play tackle in the NFL and will likely be moved to guard. However, he can bend, redirect in space and should mature into a “plus” starter inside.
NFL Ceiling: “Plus” NFL starter
NFL Floor: Average NFL guard

Agreed, this was very good pick and a need pick. Mike Mayock said he believes that he can be a Day 1 starter. Ryan Lilja's days are numbered.

I'd flip if they took another O-Lineman in Round 3, but I don't think they will. Safety depth is probably more likely.

Agree. I don't want to see another OL until Round 5 - either David Molk or Mike Brewster to back up at Center. I fully expect to see a Safety in Round 3. There is plenty of talent there. My top choice would be Trumaine Johnson (CB/FS tweener) if he falls that far but he probably won't. But there is still Brandon Taylor, Antonio Allen, Markelle Martin.

I kinda like this pick almost as much as if we had gotten Glenn, only because I think Allen fits our zone blocking system better. Allen is a more athletic and not a power blocker. Zone blocking doesnt require a bulldozer, but more of a balance of agility and power.

It will be good to see competition between him and Lilja this year. I think it will make the whole line better. Also, he could probably sub in at RT if need be.

This pick is EXACTLY the opposite of what Peterson and Vermeil did in the early '00s. Those guys ran the team into the ground by not drafting and cultivating the future of the franchise. Pioli and Crennel aren't following suit. This is a GREAT pick not only for the immediate future but also for the future of this franchise.

Exactly. Peterson and Vermeil didn't address the O-Line for the future through the draft in any way shape or form and everybody and their brother knew that Willie Roaf and Will Shields were going to be retiring circa 2005-2006 and their drafts produced nothing in the way of replacements for these guys. And when you lose guys like that and don't have any replacements ready it hurts any football team & it really hurt the Chiefs. Their Offense went pfffffft and double-digit losing seasons followed from 2007-2009.

Nice work by the Chiefs brass with this pick and with 6 more picks to come & already having 650+ pounds of BEEF on board with the first 2 picks, this draft is shaping up very nice.

Other interesting note: Allen played with Asamoah 2 years ago. Which means they have probably looked at him for 2 years.

Asomoah-3rd round
Hudson-2nd round
Allen-2nd round

THIS IS HOW YOU DRAFT AN OFFENSIVE LINE INTERIOR!!!

PERFECT... ABSOLUTELY PERFECT.

Exactly. Peterson and HERM EDWARDS didn't address the O-Line for the future through the draft in any way shape or form and everybody and their brother knew that Willie Roaf and Will Shields were going to be retiring circa 2005-2006 and their drafts produced nothing in the way of replacements for these guys.

Fixed! Herm deserves his share of crud for neglecting a top ranked offense.

Allen's a solid pick, it's rare to see someone that's ready to pass block in the NFL from word go. Looking forward to september already...

Personally I'd like to see us draft another O-lineman, then focus on other needs. Some more depth at center would be nice.

You're delusional if you think Edwards inherited a top ranked offense. Get real. The defense was perennially bottom 5. The defense needed more attention. If Vermeil and Peterson had drafted correctly, there would have been Olinemen to step in after Shields and Roaf departed. Not to mention, Peterson passed on a trade from Green Bay for Larry Johnson and instead gave him a contract that served has handcuffs for the franchise.

"Peterson and HERM EDWARDS didn't address the O-Line for the future through the draft in any way shape or form". I'm sure glad Branden Albert apparently appeared out of thin air or we'd really be in trouble.

If you guys are Chiefs fans you would realize the only draft that only draft Herm was really given the reins on is the one that brought in Carr, Flowers, Dorsey, Charles, Albert and Richardson. That is more than Pioli can say for his first 2 drafts combined. Last year was the first draft with Pioli i was happy with, although i got extremely excited when Muhammad Wilkerson dropped to us, then extremely pissed when we drafted Baldwin instead. Kind of like when we took Poe when DeCastro was available. However, liked our 2nd round pick a lot.

Will Svitek was starting in 2011 for The Falcons.

But, considering their needs on defense, and the amazing success on offense, it was a no-brainer to work on the defense.

Now, did they suck at drafting D-line? Oh yeah. But There was a whole lot more talent on this team than you care to admit.

Many of the players that Herm saw leave wound up proving it with other teams.

And had the talent not been cast off from our defense, then maybe Herm would have been able to draft O-line for those retiring.

Herm did a terrible job as HC of The Chiefs. Your excuses don't change that.

All the key players in the Chiefs playoff run 2 years ago were from Herm Edwards and Peterson's draft. Herm set the Chiefs up for success with his last draft, whether he was a good coach or not he did that much. Speaking of letting talent go Wilkerson became a starter after leaving Chiefs. Pioli let him and Babin (pro bowler) go and Waters last season. Oh, and Pioli tired to trade Charles to Redskins for a 3rd round pick we're just lucky they were equally as dumb.

i know this will bring out all the king carl haters but peterson himself had said only 2 times did he overule the head coach on draft day, once was larry johnson and i don't remember the other. based on that i would place blame and credit squarely on the head coaches and their scouts. :efpge:

Lol ya of course Peterson how convenient. "I didn't ever overrule any picks except for Larry Johnson, Derrick Thomas, Bowe, Flowers, Charles, Albert, Jared Allen and Derrick Johnson... too bad they didn't listen when i said to take Tom Brady, Darrel Revis and Larry Fitzgerld"... I do like how Pioli is building our OL. Would rather have found a way for Kalil or DeCastro but maybe they don't fit our offense like they want.

Speaking of letting talent go Wilkerson became a starter after leaving Chiefs.

You mentioned Wilkerson twice. Both Tyson Jackson and Glenn Dorsey had more tackles than he did last year.

Wilkerson 49 tackles, 35 solo, 14 assists

Jackson 55 tackles, 37 solo, 18 assists

Dorsey 62 tackles, 31 solo, 31 assists

I don't see how keeping him would have made our team better.
