Notable Quotables
Chiefs: "You can write the story however you want to write it and explain why, but we lost because we didn't play well enough to win. They did. It's simple."

—Chiefs CB Stanford Routt after losing to Atlanta.

Bills: "I understand that. Bills fans live and die with us. I understand that. I understand how they feel. I keep trying to tell everybody that I believe we are going to be a good football team, but time is the only thing that will tell on that and winning is the only healer."

ESPN Preview
Kansas City Chiefs vs. Buffalo Bills - Preview - September 16, 2012 - ESPN (http://espn.go.com/nfl/nflpreview?gameId=320916002)

The Buffalo Bills picked up right where they left off in 2011, allowing 40-plus points while being routed on the road.

Now missing two of their biggest offensive weapons for an extended period of time, regrouping Sunday likely won't be easy against a visiting Kansas City Chiefs defense returning Pro Bowl linebacker Tamba Hali and seeking to avenge a blowout in last year's season opener.

Buffalo (0-1) was overmatched in a 49-21 loss at New England in the 2011 season finale, and few -- if any --offseason improvements were evident in last week's 48-28 road defeat to the New York Jets.

The defense, despite adding prized defensive end Mario Williams in the offseason, couldn't defend against shorter fields following two Ryan Fitzpatrick interceptions -- he finished with three total -- and the special teams unit allowed a punt return before the Bills were able to get points on the board.

"We definitely didn't do what we needed to do to win," Williams said. "The biggest thing was that we didn't get sacks. Starting with myself, we definitely have to put the quarterback on his back with any means necessary."

Making matters worse, starting running back Fred Jackson, who missed the last six games of 2011 with a broken leg, went down with a sprained knee ligament after only six carries for 15 yards. Wide receiver David Nelson then tore a right knee ligament in the fourth quarter.

Jackson will miss at least four weeks, while Nelson was placed on injured reserve and will miss the rest of the season.

"It's a setback," coach Chan Gailey said. "You lose experience and you lose versatility. But I think our guys can adjust."

C.J. Spiller proved up to the task of replacing Jackson, running for a 56-yard touchdown for Buffalo's first score and finishing with a career-high 169 yards.

"It's a huge blow," Spiller said of the injuries. "But we can't sit around and mope and not regain focus. This just means somebody on offense has got to step up."

Spiller scored a touchdown for an offense that shined in Buffalo's 41-7 win over Kansas City in last year's season opener. Fitzpatrick threw for 208 yards and a career high-tying four touchdowns, including two to tight end Scott Chandler, who caught one of three Fitzpatrick TD passes against the Jets.

Hali had a sack in last season's meeting, and the Chiefs defense will look to slow down the Bills in Week 2 after a rough performance last week.

Hali missed Sunday's 40-24 loss to Atlanta while serving a one-game suspension for violating the league's substance-abuse policy after finishing with 12 sacks in 2011.

His absence, along with those of safety Kendrick Lewis, cornerback Brandon Flowers and defensive tackle Anthony Toribio, seemed noticeable as the Falcons were forced to punt just once and faced only 10 third downs.

While Hali will return, the others were limited in practice this week and are questionable.

"I think as a whole we need to continue to work and get better," Hali told the team's official website. "Every guy has to do their job. We'll continue to study film and study our opponent. We just need to be on top of our game."

Fellow linebacker Derrick Johnson said the Chiefs (0-1) simply need to move on.

"We're trying to get the bad vibe over after this next game," Johnson said. "We've been through that being behind and trying to catch up and at the end of the year. We just need to start winning now, count our wins, and play better."

The offense played well at times last week, converting 11 of 16 third downs and hitting the 20-point mark after being held to 19 or less in its final nine games last season.

Jamaal Charles seems fully recovered from a torn ACL that kept him out of the final 14 games of 2011, rushing 16 times for 87 yards.

Matt Cassel finished 21 for 33 with 258 yards and hit Kevin Boss with a 22-yard touchdown pass, but he also threw two interceptions.

"I think the main thing is just not turning the ball over," Cassel said. "We've got to try to get ourselves into manageable third-down situations and stay out of those third-and-long situations."

The Bills have won four of the last five meetings with the Chiefs, and they're expected to have second-year defensive tackle Marcell Dareus despite him mourning the shooting death of his younger brother last weekend.

If we score 30 points, it'll be because of a great turnover ratio. Both the Bills and Chiefs were -3 in turnovers last week, so look for that to be the turning point in the game.

Well im predicting a win tomorrow. Great news having Hali and Flowers back. IMO we could beat the bills without them but if not they are definitely the difference.

I don't think we need turnovers to put up 30 points on the Bills (althought it certainly wouldn't hurt). The Chiefs scored 17 against Atlanta in just the first half (on pace for 34) and I think they have a better defense than the Bills.

The keys to our offense will be our offensive line giving Cassel enough time to complete his passes and the 'killer b's' (especially Bowe) getting open. It's obvious that Bowe's holding out of training camp hurt his performance last week.

The key on defense will be stopping C. J. Spiller from having a big day. He will get his yards, to be sure, but we can't let him have any big plays and we can't allow the Bills to have long sustained drives, wearing down our defense and keeping our offense off the field. That's OUR agame! The defense needs to stay in their lanes, play disciplined and not over persue. If we can do all that we can win big.

My hope is that it's a close game, with a lot of improvement from the defensive side and the halftime adjustments. Going by history we haven't done that well against the Bills, inparticular when we play there...but my hope is that last years' blowout sticks in their minds and they make the Bills earn anything they get.

Flowers and Hali back it's time to get it done

Should help their Defense for sure.

Biggest thing on Offense: Protect Matt Cassel for 4 Quarters. They did so in the 1st half last week, but not in the 2nd half and we saw the results.

Cassel ... and the rest of this team are absolutely PATHETIC... No one is playing to their potential ... The defense is playing like 3rd graders ... I would hope the urge to not want to be 0-2 on the season already would give you the urgency to come out a LOT better than this.
I think it's less pressure on us, and less pressure on the opposition's defense playing softer on us, just makes us look better by comparison.

Romeo is not a HC, he is a good defensive coord though, they gave him the job based on the final three games of the season. Get a HC thats worth something, heck I would take Marty back over this garbage were seeing.

The players have quit on him and they can't right the ship, we have an average QB that shows flashes but isn't a great decision maker, I am tired of below average to average showings every season.

Raise, we have bad management. We just need to go in another direction. Fire Scott Pioli

I agree. I've had enough of Pioli. He has proven to be totally inept & I can no longer stand his being too gutless to take good O-Line prospects in the 1st round of the NFL draft.

In 2010, they passed on Okung and a chance to get a 2 fold upgrade to the O-Line by putting Okung at LT and moving Albert to LG ( and don't anyone try and tell me that Berry was the right choice -- that's total BS, you don't take a Safety in the top 5, EVER !! Safeties are a dime a dozen & I notice nobody points to Berry's big contract as another reason Carr was not resigned, but it was ).

In 2011, they pass on Carimi and go with Barry Richardson as their RT. Worked out real well, didn't it?

In 2012, they pass on DeCastro and we are seeing both Lilja and Asamoah getting their a$$es whipped at crucial times in games this year.

And don't anyone try using the excuse "those guys all got hurt". It's just a cop out, because there is no way of knowing that they would have gotten hurt, if any of the aforementioned guys had been drafted by the Chiefs.

Obviously you are one of those "draft Offensive line every year" KC fans so I'm just going to say I couldn't disagree with you more.

Choosing Berry over Okung I think was the right move. When is the last time you have seen a safety come out since Polamalu and Reed that had so much playmaking ability right out of college. I didn't see you complaining after his rookie season when he was being talked about as one of the best safeties in the league after 1 year. He got hurt last year, we may or may not see the same Eric Berry ever again.

Safeties are not a "dime a dozen"... yes there are a lot of safeties in the league because it's an NFL position and needs to be filled. Since there are so many, see how many safeties you can list that are better than Berry...

His contract had NOTHING to do with Brandon Carr! Carr did not want to resign with the Chiefs, he was ready to go to Dallas soon as FA hit. We never had a chance to sign him. Berry's contract has nothing to do with it, look how much cap room we have left!

HATERS will HATE

I give you the DeCastro pick, there was nothing sexy about our draft slot there and DeCastro would have been the perfect addition. We did address the line with 2 very good prospects later on...Why didn't you mention that?

Now lets look at this from a football standpoint if your hate isn't clouding your thought process so much.

Buffalo scored at will against the Chiefs today. That means, the Chiefs are playing from behind and the way to make up that many points is to air it out. When you are in that position the opposing team defense realizes this and sends extra pass rushers each time to attack the line. Okung, DeCastro, Carimi, or whoever else you want to throw in there would NOT be able to do much better with a qb who is slow in his readings and delivery.

O-Line isn't the biggest necessity to put us over the top. I.E. Steelers, Green Bay, Patriots

What do they have in common....franchise QB, coaching staff consistency, and proven leaders.

(I can't believe I'm having the O-line talk already)

Typical hero-worship junk combined with old "Polamalu & Reed" copout BS. Are you Berry's personal cheerleader or what?

Neither Polamalu or Reed were drafted in the top 15 !! And both the Steelers and Ravens had decent O-Lines and decent Defensive front 7's when they made those selections.

You are incorrect. I had a long discussion with other people right on this very board right after the 2010 season, that Berry wasn't the right guy to have taken at #5, especially after the Chiefs O-Line literally got ran over at the end of the 2010 season in the final 2 games at Arrowhead in Jan. of 2011. Another poster here by the name of figcrostic and I have discussed this many times via PM's during the 2010 season and even afterward, that the Chiefs had made the wrong decision passing on Okung and taking Berry.

You can hump your neighbors dog all you want to over Berry, but the fact is, he's looked to be nothing more than a dime-a-dozen Safety thus far when he has been on the field & his impact has been very minimal. You are foolishly buying into the over-hype regarding him. Look at the two Safeties Seattle drafted in 2010 ( Earl Thomas and Cam Chancelor ) that both were selected to the Pro-Bowl in 2011 ( not Pro Bowl replacements like Berry was in 2010 -- Berry had no business being even considered for the Pro Bowl, it should have been Eric Weddle of SD, who incidently was All-Pro in 2011 and selected to the Pro Bowl ).

I can name many Safeties that are as good as Eric Berry. You are over-glorifying him. He's an OK player, but no way would I spend the #5 overall pick for him and make him the highest-paid Safety in NFL history. Not only was it fiscally foolish for the Chiefs, it was foolish from a football positional value standpoint. See todays game and tell me which player had the bigger impact that was drafted in the top 10 in 2010? It was CJ Spiller.

You also incorrect about hating on Berry. It's not Berry that's being hated on. It's the Chiefs decision to take him under the WRONG circumstances.

Do you also really believe that Carr wasn't aware of the contracts of both Berry and Flowers and realized that he had no chance of getting that type of contract in KC, regardless of their cap space? You are p!ssing on your own head and telling yourself it's raining, if you think otherwise. Carr knew the Chiefs weren't going to hand out a 3rd big contract to a 3rd DB, but if Berry hadn't been selected & they had taken Okung, then he would've thought otherwise.

As far as the selections of Allen and Stephenson, I loved them, but they are not instant starters are they? When referencing Okung, Carimi, and DeCastro, I'm referring to instant starters.

Have fun pumping up the neighbors dog over Berry in your fantasy football world, while opposing Defensive front 7's continue to obliterate the Chiefs O-Line year in and year out and it doesn't matter who the Chiefs QB is, they'll be beaten into zombies just like Trent Green, Damon Huard, Brodie Croyle, and now, Matt Cassel and whoever is next in line. And meanwhile Berry will have very little impact -- just the nature of the position he plays.

The offense certainly started slow. Especially the running game. But the defense did not seem to improve at all with the returns of Flowers and Hali.

The offense starting slow gave the defense a perfect opportunity to lose this game in a big hurry, and the seized that opportunity. Then, once the offense got some footing, they gave it right back with a fumble at the goalline.

Cassel did not play well prior to the end of their chances in the game. But he didn't play bad either.

This team is designed to be a port running team with a defense that dictates a low scoring game. That absolutely did not happen. The areas that are the heart of this team were flat out horrible.

What to do about it? I don't know. The same thing happened last year, and the defense recovered. They had better get their s*** together or we will have to change the offense to an "air it out" style.

Overall, Cassel did alright. He was pretty efficient during the first half, but the running game was not doing their part.

And.once the game was out of hand, Cassel did well.

The one fast fix for this team is the defense. Hands down.

You cut the scoring of our opponents and the offense looks to be capable of winning.

But the current defense does not stop anything until they have spotted our opponents a 20 point lead. THAT is what needs fixed.
