Notable Quotables
Chiefs: "I understand that there's a lot of disappointment out there and I'm disappointed as well. We're going to try to work to get it better. I still think that we have talent on the team, but the talent has to play better."

—Chiefs head coach Romeo Crennel after his team went 1-3 to start the season.

Ravens: "It's not what my expectations would be." - Bucs RB Doug Martin.

Spread: Buccaneers by 4, Over/Under 40

Game Day Forecast: Mostly Sunny, 85 degrees

ESPN Preview
Kansas City Chiefs vs. Tampa Bay Buccaneers - Preview - October 14, 2012 - ESPN (http://scores.espn.go.com/nfl/nflpreview?gameId=321014027)

Though the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are off to a rough start, their current state still might not be as troubling as the one the Kansas City Chiefs find themselves in.

With backup Brady Quinn prepared to make his first start in almost three years, the visiting Chiefs look to avoid a third consecutive loss while trying to hand the rested Buccaneers a fourth straight defeat Sunday.

After winning three of its final five games to salvage a 7-9 record last year and with key contributors Jamal Charles, Matt Cassel and Eric Berry healthy to open this season, Kansas City expected to start strong in 2012. However, the Chiefs have committed a league-high 19 turnovers in their 1-4 start, Cassel has a meager 66.2 passer rating and the defense has allowed 29.0 points per contest.

"This team needs to do more things to win," coach Romeo Crennel said. "That's what we're going to work on, try to get this team to do more of the right things so that we can win."

Things hit a low late in last Sunday's 9-6 loss to Baltimore when a portion of the Chiefs' home crowd cheered as Cassel laid on the ground after a hit from Ravens' defensive tackle Haloti Ngata. Kansas City offensive lineman Eric Winston called the cheering "100-percent sickening," but it demonstrated the frustration of one of the NFL's most loyal fan bases.

The Chiefs must find a way to get back on track with Quinn under center, as Cassel was ruled out against the Bucs after suffering a concussion versus Baltimore. In his first regular season action since he started and beat Kansas City while with Cleveland on Dec. 20, 2009, Quinn went 3 for 3 for 32 yards and led the Chiefs to a fourth quarter field goal last Sunday.

The 22nd overall pick in 2007 completed a pass to Dwayne Bowe for a go-ahead touchdown in that series, but it was called back due to a penalty.

"It felt great to be out there," said Quinn, who has completed 52.5 percent of his passes for 1,934 yards with 10 touchdowns and nine interceptions while starting 12 of his 15 career games. "Matt is our starter and I just prepare every week like I am a starter, and I prepare myself for the moment."

That moment will be now, but all the pressure likely won't be on Quinn.

A Chiefs defense that had allowed least 24 points in each of its first four contests hopes to build on Sunday's effort when it limited Baltimore to three field goals.

"If we will play like that going forward, we give ourselves a chance to win the game," Crennel said.

Charles continues to be one of the few bright spots, rushing for a league-high 551 yards on 102 carries with two TDs while also catching 15 passes for 118 yards and a score. He gained 106 yards on 18 rushes during the Chiefs' 30-27 overtime home victory over Tampa Bay on Nov. 2, 2008.

The Buccaneers (1-3) have lost their last three games by a combined 15 points since a season-opening 16-10 victory over Carolina. While Kansas City might be struggling with its collective confidence, Tampa Bay feels confident coming out of its bye week.

"You know what's great about this team is everybody's so encouraged. Nobody's down," defensive tackle Gerald McCoy.

While the team's overall optimism is refreshing, the Buccaneers need to be more consistent.

Tampa Bay has scored 34 and 22 points in games this season, but also failed to total 20 in two others. Josh Freeman threw for 110 yards during a 16-10 loss at Dallas on Sept. 23, but had 299 while he helped the Bucs erase an 18-point deficit before falling 24-22 at home to Washington on Sept. 30.

High-priced free-agent acquisition Vincent Jackson caught six passes for 100 yards with a TD against the Redskins, his second 100-yard game in the last three. The former San Diego Charger, however, has averaged 63.8 receiving yards and scored three TDs in his last 10 games versus Kansas City.

Defensively, Tampa Bay ranks 27th allowing 419.0 yards per contest but has yielded only three second-half field goals in its last two games.

"You look at us on tape, and you say: `Wow.' It's a play here or a play there," offensive tackle Donald Penn said. "It's going to come ... because it's right there."

Tampa Bay has won the last three meetings with Kansas City by a combined 13 points.

Maybe today we will realize that our OC is lame too .. he got a QB able to strech the field. I understand that Cassel doesn't posses a rocket arm but Quinn owns a good one. Dabol needs to strech the field .. he got a QB able to do it.

Ive supported this since the start of the season. matt cassel is not the guy you can just rest your hopes on. he needs too much work! he needs to be coached and corrected and properly groomed.

but that still doesnt fix the missed tackles, the lousy blocking, the perpetual holding, the miserably defeatist playcalling, etc.

these guys dont have a winner's mind set.

at least with haley i knew wed go for a gamble every now n then.

IMO because even D.Bowe is a good WR he got an Issue for dropping easy balls.

J. Baldwin hadn't be able to get a true shot at WR2 .. and sometimes he try to get the "magic" catch instead get the easy catch.

Doesn't matter who the hell we have at QB. Cassel in my opinion is a good QB, Quinn is serviceable backup and both are made to look worse than they are by this organization.

This offense with our weapons you could call a ferrari, and doesn't matter who the QB is they are going to tell him to get in and drive to the speed limit and obey all traffic laws and don't rev it up. Instead of just handing matt cassel the keys and saying go ****ing get a win!

People that think we are going to draft a QB and all our nightmares are over are high on crack. It will just be the same damn thing. Probably the reason manning wanted nothing to do with KC cause he knew he wouldn't be given the keys and freedom he wanted.. Ridiculous.. we're clearly not watching the same game. when he has a target to throw to, hes far more consistently on target than cassel. he also doesnt require his receivers to jump 5 feet into the air and risk life and limb to make the catch.

if this is a quinn loss, how are we explaining getting absolutely stuffed in the run game? how can we explain voer 2:1 time of possession stats in first half and still be down 7-3?

The results are just the same as they were when Cassel was in there. The wrs have balls hitting them in the hands and somehow it ends up going to the defense. That didn't change today. At some point here you have to start looking at others outside of Cassel. You look at the plays there Wrs have made and what ours have done. It's no contest. There wrs are able to make plays even on not perfect throws why can't ours. Isn't Bowe suppose to be one of the best in the NFL. What 1 catch today. You can't tell me that's top wr play. Cassel has his share of blame so does Quinn today but today is a wake up call there's more wrong then Matt Cassel the results are the same. NOT GOOD.

you could put any QB in the league behind our line and it wouldn't change. This organization is handcuffing the players at this point. Our QB's have the shortest leash in the league and it shows. I'm now a firm believer that is why peyton didn't even come to KC for a visit and ruled them out instantly. We had the money and we have the weapons for him and he wouldn't even look over our way. And it's cause he knows this organization will not let him run the team.

If this organization goes thru the rest of this season like this and has a top 10 pick and picks a QB it will be the biggest mistake since the last 1st round QB we took. This organization has to change, cassel can lead this team he has proved it. i'm fine with cassel if we fix the philosophy of this team.

At this point i think the whole staff needs to be blown up again. And it pains me to say it cause i don't want to do it and i'm so against it but it's just evident that is what needs to happen at this point in time. I didn't want the romeo hire cause i knew his philosophy and how timid he is and how he will lay down to authority. Don't know if it's pioli or romeo but it's got to change. If it's pioli he has to go to.

i really don't think brady has looked bad. I think he could still be a decent QB in this league given the right situation. But i see no difference between him and cassel that most people rip into it's sad. I think they are about equal on accuracy. matt will throw it around more and stand in the pocket a little firmer.

ANY qb with "time" is going to be accurate. LOL

my argument is that cassel's accuracy this season with time has been inconsistent at best (i think thats a kind way of describing it).

if he coul dhave managed to play the rest of the season the way he did the first half against atlanta, hed certainly have my full faith and respect by now.

Our team lacks football basic fundamentals......play calling (coaches), tackeling, blocking, basic pass coverage (wide open receivers!).

The team has no direction, the coaching is horrible. ESP when we can't even hang with a 1 win team!

Is it already time to look ahead to the draft ??? Now we certainly have no chance of making the playoffs I honestly wouldn't be too bothered if we got 2 or 3 wins and got the first overall pick, Geno Smith could be our franchise QB.

we don't need to be drafting a QB cause we'll be in the same boat!

Can we draft a new front office?

While the results of the game did suck, it sure is nice to see that the problems are finally being noticed since Cassel was not out there to take any and all blame.

Quinn.did alright. He had the same problem as Cassel.... Ridiculous.mistakes by his teammates.

1-5....... Wow.

We have two guys that have been rejected from the Cleveland Browns, that are now our OC, DC, & HC! You can continue to find reasons why this team is so bad, with so many quality players, but in the end, it becomes easy to see.

Oh come on Cassel did NOTHING Today Nothing. it's all his fault. If he did something maybe Bowe would have had more then 1 catch. This is all on cassel. ALL On him how can you excuse him? It was like he wasn't even on the field :drunkhb:

As funny as that is, I guarantee that he is being blamed, because he was not on the field, by somebody, somewhere.

The Cassel defending is as much of a :beat_DeadHorse: as the bashing. There are other problems on the team. I think the more rational people here have said that. Just because there are other problems too, does not give him a pass. If you are arguing that Cassel is good because Quinn did no better (a guy who could not even play in place of Tebow last year), your standard for quality QB play is misguided at best.

Admitting there are other problems, which many folks that are wanting a QB change have done, does not change him needing replaced after this year.

I am still wanting a new HC at the very least and would not mind if Hunt pulled the plug on Pioli, also. Realistically, I know all three are not going to happen. The best I can hope for? Pioli gets his power pulled a bit by Hunt and he finds a coach that he can give some of that power to. I think the next coach hire should actually be made by Hunt (doubtful). Hire the guy, tell Pioli he has to work with him not over him. The new coach is in charge of picking what he deems as the best QB in the draft. Looking at the way we are going today, probably any QB he wants. Does that mean other personnel changes do not need to happen? NO. More needs to be done.

Should Bowe be offered a contract? NO!! Draft another WR. Make it a burner. We are so hand tied with no down field threat. I could go on and on. Some of the problems may work themselves out. The O-Line is not working yet, but they do tend to improve with time. The more they work together the better they tend to get.

No one on here is saying that gives Cassel a "free pass" What us "defending Cassel" are doing is not giving everyone else a free pass unlike some. Where are the threads calling out D Bowe? He has games like today where he just doesn't show up. You hardly know that he's on the field. Where is the post to hate on Bowe? Have you seen them? I haven't. Instead what do we here. "if we had a real qb" "the 60 million dollar mistake" OVER AND OVER again. Now we saw a different QB. I admit last week I wanted a change. We got it and still have the SAME issues as when Cassel was in there. If we can get a better qb then Cassel GO FOR IT. I'm always for the better QB. But to see blind hate for a guy on THIS TEAM from OUR fans is just so disappointing.

The thing is that Cassel was throwing a lot of INTs, and few people were accepting that it was primarily the receivers' fault.

Today, we got to see that it still is a receivers issue.

I saw a whole lot of what used to be referred to as "excuse making" when it was Cassel, from exactly the same people who had called t excuse making.

I saw.Bike actually ask what receiver had botched the first INT... BIKE DID THAT.

I saw a whole lot of complaining about how Quinn was not.being given enough time in the pocket.

I saw how the play-calling was hurting his performance.

It was nice to see the REAL problems being noticed by the fans.

I almost added Bowe as an example. No, he should not get an extension after this year. Hell, he should not have been the player they franchised. Another pretty obvious mistake/oversight by Pioli, IMHO. The best play now would be to offer him up for trade to a contending team that needs a WR. He still has enough going for him that someone would likely bite for as much as a 2nd round pick.

It kind of goes with the territory on Cassel, though. The QB gets the biggest bucks and is the face of the franchise. They get too much credit when things go well (IE 2010) and too much blame when they do not go well. The fans here should disappoint no more than any other fans in the NFL.

I resemble that! Our receivers were absolutely terrible. From Baldwin slowing his route as the ball sails over his head to some tight end that I never heard of giving the ball to the Bucs. This entire team is just terrible.

I still think the best idea is to get Cowher in here, move Pioli to President of Football operations, and let Cowher run the day to day of the team.

I know it is not likely to happen, but a man can dream can't he?

The sad part is that just 4 years ago we were in this exact same situation. Clark Hunt had the chance to reform this organization into a perennial playoff contender but made mistakes in some of his choices. His poor choices have made the franchise a laughing stock and turned the fan base from one of the most loyal in the league to one that I'm not even proud to be a part of. Something good NEEDS to come from this atrocity of a season!
