Notable Quotables

Chiefs: "It's pretty special. I think it's special to everyone in this building. I know it's special to everyone out there in Oakland. When you think of Oakland, you think tough, physical team. We're going to have to match it and probably surpass that to get a win."

—Chiefs right tackle Eric Winston on the rivalry game between the Chiefs and Raiders.

Browns: "It won't be a distraction. We won't allow it to be a distraction."

—Raiders coach Dennis Allen on Rolando McClain's return to the 53-man roster following a two-game suspension.

ESPN Preview
Kansas City Chiefs vs. Oakland Raiders - Preview - December 16, 2012 - ESPN (http://scores.espn.go.com/nfl/nflpreview?gameId=321216013)

Battling through a dismal season on and off the field, one of the Kansas City Chiefs' few positives has come in the form of inspirational performances from the player possibly affected the most by the recent tragic events.

Jamaal Charles likely hopes to get more opportunities to shine against the Oakland Raiders this time around.

Riding three consecutive 100-yard games, Charles looks to help guide Kansas City to its ninth victory in its last 10 visits to Oakland without top receiver Dwayne Bowe when these AFC West rivals meet Sunday.

Not only did Charles lose a teammate in the Jovan Belcher murder-suicide Dec. 1, but his wife's cousin, Kasandra Perkins, was the victim. Despite the tragedy, ensuing memorial services, wakes and funerals, Charles has managed to stay focused while not speaking publicly.

Charles, who leads the AFC with 1,220 rushing yards, ran for 127 in Kansas City's 27-21 victory over Carolina one day after the Belcher incident, following up a 107-yard effort in a loss to Denver one week earlier.

He scampered for an 80-yard touchdown on the first play of last Sunday's 30-7 loss to Cleveland, finishing with 165 yards for the struggling Chiefs (2-11).

"I think it speaks to the character of him as a man, how he's able to have an optimistic perspective despite all the things he's been through right now," said Brady Quinn, who completed only 10 of 21 passes for 159 yards and an interception against the Browns. "It really speaks to who he is as man."

Charles last rushed for over 100 yards in four straight games during the last four weeks of the 2009 season. To match that mark he'll have to overcome a Raiders defense likely focused on stopping the run with Bowe missing at least this contest with injuried ribs.

"We've leaned on him all year," coach Romeo Crennel said of Charles. "He's been the consistent staple in our offense. We kind of lean on him."

It hasn't been quite all season as Crennel suggested, seeing as Charles had only five carries and caught three passes for a total of 10 yards in a 26-16 loss to Oakland on Oct. 28 -- a surprising development Crennel explained only by saying, "Now, that I'm not exactly sure, either."

Raiders coach Dennis Allen doesn't foresee Charles playing such a limited role this time around, though, as Charles has rushed for at least 100 yards in four of the six games since that contest.

"I would think that they would turn around and hand the ball off to him. He's one of the more explosive players in the league," Allen said. "I would anticipate they would try to get him the ball."

Oakland, which has lost six straight since beating the Chiefs, and Kansas City each are allowing 131.2 rushing yards per game -- tied for 26th in the NFL -- and the Raiders (3-10) hope to get some production from their top back as well.

Darren McFadden, who ran for a season-high 114 yards in the first meeting, rushed 11 times for 52 yards before tweaking his already injured right ankle in the fourth quarter of last Thursday's 26-13 loss to Denver.

He had missed the previous four games with the injury, but the long layoff has given McFadden time to heal. He's expected to play Sunday, and defensive end Richard Seymour, who has missed the last five games after suffering a Grade 2 hamstring tear against Tampa Bay on Nov. 4, also could be ready to go.

"I thought he looked well and yeah, I think there's a good chance he's going to play this week," Allen said.

Linebacker Rolando McClain was reinstated Monday after serving a two-game suspension following an argument with Allen at practice Nov. 28. A team that's allowing a league-worst 30.9 points per game can use all the defensive help it can get, especially facing Charles.

Allen, though, is aware Oakland also is building for the future with 2012 being a lost season. He said younger players will see more time over the final three games, including former Ohio State star quarterback Terrelle Pryor, who has yet to take an official NFL snap in his two seasons.

"All of us, as competitors, we want to win," Allen said. "But I also understand, and I've got a big-picture view of what I want this football team to look like. We've got to prepare for the future."

Both Charles and McFadden were out with injuries for Kansas City's 28-0 victory Oct. 23, 2011, in the most recent meeting in Oakland.

I always want us to win especially the tRaiders, but this one I am not to sure who I want to win, maybe end up in a 3-3 tie that would keep us in front of them in the draft. If we win the tRaiders will get to pick in front of us and they will take who we want just to pi$$ us off for no other reason. This is the first time I have ever felt this way since the Texans moved to KC, I just don't know.

Yes but it is the tRaiders, I find it real hard to rout for them and against the Chiefs, it just goes against my grain. Like I said if it ended up in a tie would be okay we would still pick before them.

That's b/c the Raiders have sold out to stop him...Because Brady Quinn can't move the offense on his own. 1+1=2.

Our best offensie player has 7 touches.....last time we played it was 5.

That's because he's getting smothered every single time he touches the ball (except for the play called back for holding) -- just like last time.

It shows that this team cannot move forward if their Offense relies solely on Charles, alone. It's a passing league & the Chiefs don't have the men to make it work. Drafting an ILB with their first pick does nothing to address that issue.

Now you are just being a freaking d@@k. The teams biggest needs are obviously QB's and WR's going into next season & if people can't see that and still want to draft Te'o, then they are blatantly being blind.
Well if there's not a QB or WR worth the first round pick, then you either take the best player available, or trade it. You can't pick what's not there!

Dude Geno smith has that game against Baylor and everyone is like this is the best qb going into the draft. He then is the talk of college football. And most people thought well let's see what he's made of when he gets to the meat of the soft big 12 schedule he played and they can say what ever the f they want that kstate game and Texas tech game he sucked he folded.

...and you don't waste the pick on something you DON'T need. QB's always move up the draft board. I can go on and on with a list of examples. They may not be able to trade it, then what? The only logical alternative may be to work a trade with Wash. for Kirk Cousins and then they can go BPA with the 1st pick.

So Barkley didn't play vs Notre Dame. This is where it gets interesting.

If Barkley plays vs Notre Dame and wins, the spotlight on Te'o is much less.

If he plays and loses, he's 7-5 (USC is 7-5 by the way).

I don't need to remind you either that West Virginia has the 121st worst D out of 124 teams.

Of course I don't know what would have happened if Barkley played. I do know that Geno/Barkley had pretty much the same record. One played for close to the worst D's in the league (Geno). Something tells me if we saw this offense play like this with Geno you would be willing to look at what Wrs he has had to work with. You know the answer to the question, it is the qb. When a defense only gives up 12 points you really should be able to win the game.

When you score 0 on offense, you won't win anything.

Romeo situation speaks for itself, he is an awful head coach. Pioli is the one who assembled the coaching staff and the roster. This is his creation.

99% of the time you're right but 99% of any other Head coach wouldn't sit his best WR he had. Wouldn't you agree. And tell me who that "good QB" would have thrown to today? Can you name someone?

That's was a hell of a play too. Ben never saw it. He jumped that route.

I was just saying that Peyton's team were known for poor rushing attacks.....but 10 yards! No one can have success.

It's not rocket science, Raiders pack the box and dare the qb to throw when they know the offense has a weak passing attack.

When you can stretch the field and make big plays in the passing game the d must back off, opening up the running game.

The problem is we don't have a passing attack.

Yes I woul agree, although I/we have no idea why Breaston isn't playing. We need to go WR in the draft as I have said before.

But the big ugly 0 we put up today and the 12 points the defense gave up shows that we desperately need to go the offensive route, QB and WR.

This coming from the guy that wanted the 13.1 pts offense that Orton ran.

But top to bottom this coaching staff is the worst in the NFL. We have zero ability to make adjustments on offense. And if I were on this D it would be hard to give it everything you have. I go back to the interview with DJ after the home Denver game he sounded like a broken broken man. It was so disheartening to listen to. He didn't call anyone out but man he wanted to.

All I did was ask you a simple question Matt, obviously we need to go WR in the draft as I have said before.

But the big ugly 0 we put up today and the 12 points the defense gave up shows that we desperately need to go the offensive route, QB and WR.
No matter who we draft, they will not be successful with the support system currently in place.

Dude Geno smith ain't gonna do ****e when a qb gets sacked four times knocked down 11 and hurried 9....and then rush for a whopping 10 yards No qb is gonna have success.

Well, no joke!! Like there's really any receivers that were playing today for the Chiefs that could even remotely threaten the Raiders defense. Without Bowe, they were screwed. That doesn't mean they shouldn't take Smith if he proves to be the best QB available after the college season and the combine are over with.

No Sht. we need a QB. But as it's been said a 1000 times before, you can't draft what's not there!!!!! WTF?

Where is the basis of your statement "you can't draft what's not there" coming from? It sure as hell isn't from here:

2013 NFL Mock Drafts - CBSSports.com - NFLDraftScout.com (http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/draft/mock)

Nor here:

2013 NFL Mock Draft - WalterFootball.com (http://walterfootball.com/draft2013.php)

Why are these sites mocking him to the Chiefs if it "isn't there"?

Precisely, and what is the solution to this problem? Well, of course, draft an ILB with their 1st pick.

If you are referring to the Chiefs front office and their HC, and Offensive coaching staff, you are 100% correct. They all must go after this season.

Kyle Orton would of been much better for this team than anything we have now, our team played entirely different with him in command. We even had our own Tamba Hali complimenting Orton on how he could avoid 3 and outs and actually sustain drives to give the defense a break, and give them better field position.

We have the worst personnel on offense in the entire NFL.

4 years of fat scott.

So saying that can you see just how bad the coaching is hurting this team? We have seen a better offense from the players that we have now under a different head coach. Good enough no but it has been much better then it has been all year in the past. What happened we changed head coaches. That's the biggest problem with this team. When your head coach can't answer why your best Rb only got 5 carries with anything other then I don't know you have a MAJOR problem. There are not many QBs that can do well in that so who knows what any QB would have done today or at any other point this year.

I would agree we need to put the priority on offense but if it's not there don't force it is all I have said. All really I think what most who have mentioned Teo as a possible pick have said. But it gets made out to be we have to have Teo. I don't care if we draft Teo or not I don't care if we draft Geno or not. I want the best guy that can help this team win games. A great QB I agree would be the best pick if he's out there. All I am saying is if we are going to draft a QB we need to be sure it's the right QB drafting a bust will set us back longer then not drafting a QB. Just because you have to give that QB a couple of years to see what he can do.

Okay then explain how the minnesota vikings who own the worst passing offense in the league, statistically, and adrian peterson still gets it done. Jamaal is an elite back if AP can do it I would think that Jamaal can do it also. The Vikings have virtually no passing game AP sees 9 men in the box an awful lot.

Watching Crennel's post game conf. He looks beaten and close to the breaking point. He is done, he just wants to leave

In a way I am glad to hear that. It will make being fired less painful for him. Getting fired aint so bad when you want to leave anyway.
