Weather forecast: http://www.nflweather.com/assets/weather/small/sct.png 72 degrees, mostly sunny

Line: Denver -10, Over/Under: 58
Trends:
The Broncos are 4-4 ATS.
The Broncos are 1-2 ATS away.
The Broncos are 4-4 ATS as the favorite.
The Broncos are 1-2 ATS as an away favorite.

The Chargers are 5-2 ATS.
The Chargers are 3-0 ATS at home.
The Chargers are 4-1 ATS as the underdog.
The Chargers are 3-0 ATS as a home underdog.

Game Plans:
Chargers:
The plan is simple: get the ball out of Peyton Manning's mitts. Easier said than done, but that was among the reasons the Chargers didn't prevail against the Redskins -- Washington, not the Chargers, played keep-away and won the time of possession battle.

The Chargers have proven they can run the ball. What they haven't proved is their defense being able to be successful on a consistent basis on third down. They weren't in the loss to the Redskins, and were unable to get off the field when they needed to. So while the Chargers have to run the ball to keep Manning idle, first they have to prove they can stop Manning -- that's the big test.

Broncos:
Once again, the Broncos will try to dictate the tempo against a foe that would prefer to play the game at a more deliberate pace. San Diego prefers to get its yardage in small bites, and has mounted 12 drives of 10 or more plays in the last three games, six of which consumed at least six minutes of game clock.

The Broncos were effective rushing Philip Rivers last year, and if they can sprint to an early lead, look for them to use the speed of their outside pass rushers to try and disrupt Rivers' timing.

Notable Quotables:
Chargers:
"If we don't come out ready to rock and roll on Sunday, we're going to get blasted" - FS Eric Weddle on how the underdog Chargers have to approach Sunday's game against the Broncos.

Broncos:
"Very little." -- Interim head coach Jack Del Rio, on the amount of impact he will have on the offensive game plan now that he's supervising the entire team while John Fox recovers from open-heart surgery Monday.

ESPN Game Preview (http://scores.espn.go.com/nfl/nflpreview?gameId=331110024):

San Diego coach Mike McCoy will get to see several familiar faces when Denver visits the Chargers on Sunday.

The former Broncos offensive coordinator, however, won't see his old boss.

With John Fox recovering from heart surgery, Denver looks to keep rolling with defensive coordinator Jack Del Rio at the helm against a Chargers team trying to regroup from a discouraging loss.

Fox was hospitalized last Saturday after feeling light-headed while playing golf during the Broncos' bye week. Two days later, he had his aortic valve replaced, an open-chest procedure which will likely cause him to miss several weeks.

"We all wish him a speedy recovery," Del Rio said. "The best way that we could honor him is to go out and play great football."

The Broncos (7-1) played plenty of great football over the first half of the season.

Denver is averaging an NFL-best 42.9 points -- 12.9 better than No. 2 Chicago -- and is on pace to shatter the NFL record of 589 points (2007 Patriots). Not surprisingly, Peyton Manning is also putting up eye-popping numbers. His 2,919 yards and 29 touchdown passes are on pace to break the current records of 5,476 yards (Drew Brees, 2011) and 50 TDs (Tom Brady, 2007).

Wes Welker leads Denver with 50 catches and nine touchdowns, Demaryius Thomas has a team-best 685 receiving yards followed by Eric Decker with 669, and tight end Julius Thomas has eight TD receptions.

"I'm not going to say it's as easy as it looks," Demaryius Thomas said. "The main part is, everyone needs to be on the same page. You've got to have everyone on the field knowing what they're doing all the time."

Having a veteran like Manning running the offense should certainly help the Broncos with Fox recovering, and the players aren't expecting anything to change with Del Rio in charge.

"Nothing changes," wide receiver Andre Caldwell said. "It's just a different co-pilot. It's just a different guy saying the same words."

Del Rio is well-versed with the responsibilities of a head coach after spending nearly nine seasons in that role in Jacksonville before joining Fox's staff last year.

"This is coach Fox's team," Del Rio said. "I'm merely the person that's able to keep it running right now while he's healing."

Keeping the team running efficiently could be difficult, as Del Rio inherits a team opening a difficult stretch. The Broncos, who haven't played since a 45-21 win over Washington on Oct. 27, have two matchups with undefeated Kansas City around a road game against AFC East-leading New England in the coming three weeks.

Denver first turns its attention to a San Diego team eager to get back on the field after last Sunday's 30-24 overtime loss at Washington.

The Chargers (4-4) had a first-and-goal from the 1-yard line with 21 seconds to go in regulation, but after an unsuccessful run and two incomplete passes, they had to settle for a game-tying field goal. They never got the ball again as the Redskins scored a touchdown on the first possession in overtime.

"Every loss is hard to get over. It feels like you die," center Nick Hardwick told the Chargers' official website. "But we have to get over it quickly. We need to get a good week of work in and get ready to play Denver and play our best game of football to date."

McCoy, in his first season running the Chargers after four years in Denver, faced plenty of scrutiny for the questionable play calls by offensive coordinator Ken Whisenhunt in the waning moments against Washington.

"I'm not questioning what we did. We're not questioning that," McCoy said. "This is a team game. It's the San Diego Chargers' organization. And I'm not questioning any of the calls. We did what we thought was best to win the football game and we're moving on."

Aside from failing to get in the end zone from the 1-yard line, there were many reasons why San Diego lost. The Chargers allowed the Redskins to convert 12 of 17 third-down attempts and rack up 500 yards of offense, bad signs with Manning coming to town.

The Broncos won both meetings with the Chargers last season, and Manning had three touchdowns passes in each. In Denver's last trip to San Diego, Manning rallied the Broncos from a 24-0 halftime deficit for a 35-24 victory.

McCoy's coaching stock rose after he found ways to win with Tim Tebow in 2011 and then reworked the offense for Manning last season.

He has now helped revive Philip Rivers' career.

Rivers is completing an NFL-best 72.2 percent of his passes, just ahead of Manning's mark of 71.2, and his 106.5 passer rating is third-best in the league.

He'll be going up against a defense that is allowing an average of 27.3 points but is tied for the league lead with 13 interceptions. Rivers threw six picks in the two games against Denver in 2012.

It might help Rivers if San Diego's offense shows better balance. He threw 46 passes last week while the Chargers had a season-low 16 rushing attempts for 69 yards despite the game being close throughout. Ryan Mathews finished with 34 yards on seven carries after consecutive 100-yard games -- both victories -- during which he totaled 43 of San Diego's 77 rushes.

You cannot let Manning just stand back there & fire away uncontested or any QB for that matter. Chargers needed to come after him & they didn't do it. They went into a docile type of Defense & let Manning just stand back there and fire away.

The Chiefs cannot do that next Sunday. They have to get after Manning and hit him.

Wow, the Donkeys are really an incredible team. Their D has kept SD out of the end zone, and they have a better offense than they're given credit for. which is impressive. SD was obviously pumped for this game, and they're getting steamrolled. The Denver offense is almost unfair to other teams.

The Chargers Dwas doing well when they were putting pressure on Manning. Their problem was going into a prevent defense at the end of the half. They should have kept the pressure on. When they were pressuring Manning, they were doing better. Donks are beatable, but you cannot get in the redzone 3 times with no TDs and miss a FG.

Field goals also will not beat Denver

T.O.P won't beat anyone if you don't get the job done on offense.

It's a helpful thing to beat Denver as it will keep Manning on the sideline but you have to get points. You may live with a field goal or maybe two but you have to get some tds to win. And you can't make all the mistakes that the Chargers are making today if you want to win

I agree, and that seems to happen every week with Denver's opponents. I wonder if the reason teams change up against Manning is because he figures out the pressure and they have no choice but to try something new. I can't believe teams stop doing what works for no reason. There has to be something behind it. If it's obvious to us, you have to figure it's obvious to the coaches, too.

They can still get back in this game & still win it. But, they have to start on this Offensive series.

Press coverage has proven to work for both the Colts and Chargers. This is what the Chiefs have to do next Sunday and bring a pass rush.

SIX FOR SD !! Closing the gap. Now, keep playing the press coverage on Defense & maybe get another turnover.

Credit the Chargers for hanging in there. They have shown that the Broncos are definitely beatable, just maybe not by them.

Denver is playing right into the Chargers hand by running so much. Chargers have a chance to drive and tie it up (assuming they can get the conversion).

Chargers get another stop. Decker got away with an offensive PI on that, but no matter. Let's see what SD can do now.

Precisely. They've done more to beat themselves than Denver has done to beat them.

Despite what the national media might say Denver are very beatable and we potentially have the tools to do it. I like the smith - Thomas Cooper - Decker Flowers - Welker match ups and we should get pressure on the QB. Our offence needs to show up though. That's what's letting SD down today.

At least the Chargers haven't got lit up in the 4th QTR the way so many previous Donkeys opponents have and the Chiefs have had a tendency to play their best football in the 4th QTR. The Chiefs simply have to not let things get away from them at any point in the game.

SD just blew this ball game....cut and dried.

Donkeys ain't winning any SB...unless it is given to them just like in '97 and '98.

Actually, the refs called the timeout on behalf of the Donks because he was hurt. Peyton thought SD called a timeout so he sat down, but the refs called it for the Donks.

I wonder if Manning was hurt enough to miss next weeks game. Probably not, but that would make a huge difference.

Indeed they did. They did more to beat themselves than what the Donkeys did to beat them.

No, I want Manning on the field. Let the hurt be laid on Manning by Hali, Houston, and the rest of the Chiefs defenders.

Peyton was yelling at the ref that he called timeout so he could make sure he could stay in the game. He never wants to let the backup take one snap. If he would have let the Chargers call timeout they could have just kneed it and won. Instead he made sure to get every snap and they had to keep running plays which could come back to hurt you. It didn't this time but he put himself ahead of the team. And he does that often

+1. That was silly. The bigger game is next week, the game was pretty much won, why risk further injury, unless you have ZERO faith in the backup QB?

I think what happened was, SD was prepared to call a timeout until they saw that Manning was hurt. They waited to see if the refs would call an injury timeout, stopping the clock, forcing Manning out for a play and saving 1 timeout. Manning didn't call a timeout at first because he assumed that the Chargers were going to call their last timeout. So because neither team called a timeout the refs called an injury TO. Manning knew this would make him sit out a play so THEN he called timeout allowing him to stay in the game.

i agree it was a selfish move. Osweiler (sp?) could have come in and took a knee twice. There was no reason for Manning to stay in the game if he was hurt.

Precisely my thought. Their Offense has reached its peak. Defenses are going to catch up at some point. Press coverage combined with a strong pass rush can stop the Donkeys Offense & the Chiefs have the people to do it.

this. and I think we can get to manning. but we need excellent downfield coverage. make him hang on to it longer we can beat em.

WOW!!!! Missed the game because I was at work, but it sounds a bit like most of the recent Chiefs games except that SD did not really step up in the 4th quarter. I think SD showed us how to beat these damned donks.....Pressure manning, control the clock, STRANGLE the bastids in the 4th!!!!!

The CHIEFS can beat these damned donks! Every bit as easy if not easier than we have beaten everybody else. These donks are NOT world-beaters!!!!

If we put 28 points on the board we'll beat them!!!!! 24 might do it. 21 maybe possibly.

The big trick next week will be that we can't let them get a big lead early. Gotta play 'em tough from the opening kickoff. Gotta be within 7 at the start of the 4th quarter. Our D needs to be at their VERY BEST right from the start!!!!

We are going to KILL them when we play them in KC, but if we can beat them next week we'll be in the drivers seat!

GO CHIEFS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Remember how much talk about the loss of Carr a year ago. I don't think we really miss him now. Guy is so overpaid he's just not a #1 Cb in the NFL

Would you say Marcus cooper has out performed Carr this year?

I don't really no to be honest I haven't watched a lot of Dallas games. But I think Cooper has at the very least played at his level. The Dallas D is just bad. He was suppose to be a missing part to fix it. Got paid big time and hasn't lived up to it as far as I can tell.

This is why press coverage is needed to make Manning hold the ball longer than he wants to. A good pass rush combined with relentless press coverage is the best way to slow down the Donks passing game. As for the Donkeys running game, make sure that DJ can roam free from sideline to sideline.

To me it sounded like he was saying "they called timeout" not I called a timeout. He's an idiot if he was trying to stay in the game and stop the clock for the Chargers.

It also makes me wonder if the Donks are trying to jack with us the way other teams have, via the injury report. Far as I'm concerned gameplan like Manning is 100%. If Osweiler gets sacrificed and put behind center, and decides that NFL life is better with 5 step drops facing a defense that's trained for 2...That's his funeral.

On the fence on that one. Really like Marcus Cooper, and Sean Smith is great when he's focused. Problem is, Peyton Manning has made a career out of cb's that lose focus. I expect Sean Smith will get picked on. A lot.

Agreed. Go zone defense on Manning at the wrong time, he'll pick it apart. If we play our cards right, I can see us destroying the center at times with Dontari Poe, and get in a couple of situations where even a one step drop wouldn't save Peyton. And yes DJ will make their screen plays really interesting, and they can forget about rolling out if Peyton's not 100%. Even if he was, not sure that'd be the way to go against our LB corp (Houston and Hali would have a field day with that.)
