Weather forecast: http://nflweather.com/assets/weather/small/sn.png Cloudy, with a high near 24. Northwest wind 10 to 13 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%.

Line: Chiefs -7, Over/Under: 46.5
Trends:
The Chiefs are 8-6 ATS.
The Chiefs are 2-5 ATS at home.
The Chiefs are 7-4 ATS as the favorite.
The Chiefs are 2-4 ATS as a home favorite.

The Colts are 7-7 ATS.
The Colts are 3-4 ATS away.
The Colts are 3-2 ATS as the underdog.
The Colts are 1-2 ATS as an away underdog.

Game Plans:
Chiefs: One thing the Chiefs want to continue doing as the regular season winds to a conclusion is score touchdowns. (DUH!) They've been doing so at quickened pace. Over the first 10 games, the Chiefs offense scored 37 touchdowns. Over the last four games they've scored 19, including seven rushing and receiving touchdowns against Oakland last Sunday. Throw in four touchdowns from the kicking game and defense and they have averaged 41.8 points per game in the last month. In the first 10 games they averaged 23.2 points each game. That increase of nearly 20 points per game has created confidence within the Chiefs locker room that they can go out and play any type of game that develops.

Colts: The Chiefs under Andy Reid are similar as they were in the best years of Marty Schottenheimer in that they live and breathe with turnovers. The Raiders call plays designed to take occasional shots but most important have Matt McGloin avoid risky plays which could result in interceptions. They'll look to run the ball with Rashad Jennings and Marcel Reece to maintain good down and distance to avoid the kind of 10-sack disaster that doomed the Raiders in Kansas City. Defensively, the Raiders have looked like a tired team for the past two games, with little ability to generate either natural pressure or with the blitz. They'll continue to play as they have, mixing coverages and sending varying blitzes -- only they'll have to do it much better.

Notable Quotables:
Chiefs: "Three touchdowns on screen passes? I've never seen anything like it, and I certainly have never been part of something like that. Jamaal was simply amazing on those plays. There isn't much he can't do with the ball in his hands." Chiefs quarterback Alex Smith talking about teammate Jamaal Charles and the three touchdowns they connected on against Oakland via screen passes.

Colts: "Play smart. Limit turnovers offensively. Be aggressive on defense.

The Colts got off to a good start on offense in last week's home-field win over Houston by going uptempo and by spreading out the Texans defense. Look for more of the same on Sunday against Kansas City.

Communication will be the key. It will be very noisy at Arrowhead Stadium, so everybody being on the same page will be important. Keeping the focus when things get crazy, and it will get crazy at Kansas City, is paramount.

Defensively, the Colts have to be able to play fast but also play under control. Don't try to do anything out of their comfort zone. Containing the run and the screen pass are crucial. Kansas City likes to catch defense out of position and then go for the big play. Can't allow that to happen on Sunday.

Marquis Matchups:
-- Chiefs CBs Brandon Flowers and Sean Smith vs. Colts WRs T.Y. Hilton and Darrius Heyward-Bey -- In recent weeks the Chiefs defense has had problems stopping the passing game of opponents and they've been giving up a lot of big yardage plays. For instance last Sunday against Oakland, they gave up eight completions of 20 yards or more. Defensive coordinator Bob Sutton has sprinkled in more zone coverages in the last few weeks, but it will likely be Flowers covering Hilton and Smith on Heyward-Bey. Smith has struggled in the last few games.

-- Chiefs pass protection vs. Colts OLB Robert Mathis -- It's been quite a season so far for Mathis, who leads the NFL with 16 sacks in 14 games. That's a career-high number for him, coming in the first season where he did not have to share the pass rushing limelight with Dwight Freeney. Indy's defensive coaching staff led by former Chiefs LB Greg Manusky likes to move Mathis all over the place when he's coming after the quarterback. He's likely to go head-to-head at one point with all five K.C. blockers. Most of the pressure will be on the tackles Eric Fisher, Donald Stephenson and possibly Branden Albert returning from a knee injury. The protection for quarterback Alex Smith has improved recently, as he's been sacked twice in the last three games with 92 total passing plays.

--Colts QB Andrew Luck vs. the Chiefs pass defense -- Luck has only been sacked once in the last two games while throwing six touchdowns and only one interception. Kansas City has recorded 20 interceptions and 43 sacks so far this season.

--Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles vs. the Colts defense -- Charles has rushed for 1,181 yards and 11 touchdowns while also catching 65 passes for 655 yards and seven touchdowns. Yes, he's that good and he's a candidate for NFL Offensive Player of the Year and MVP awards. The Indianapolis defense has been hot and cold so far this year. They need to step up in a big way on Sunday.

ESPN Game Preview (http://scores.espn.go.com/nfl/nflpreview?gameId=331222012):

Because of some surprising results last week, both the Indianapolis Colts and Kansas City Chiefs still have an outside shot at earning a first-round bye in the AFC playoffs.

There's also a decent chance Sunday's matchup at Arrowhead Stadium won't be their last this season.

Already in the postseason, both the Chiefs and Colts will have their minds set on improving their seeding in what could wind up as a preview of an AFC wild-card matchup.

The South champion Colts (9-5) benefited greatly from the results in Week 15, which saw the AFC's three other division leaders -- Denver, New England and Cincinnati -- all lose. Because of that, the Colts will claim a first-round bye if they are able to win out, and Baltimore -- which faces the Patriots and Bengals during the final two weeks -- also wins its final two games.

Indianapolis closes the season against Jacksonville.

"Regardless of what happens with anyone else, we want to win the rest of our games and kind of be catching fire here at the right time going into the playoffs," left tackle Anthony Castonzo said. "We want to be playing our best ball regardless of what happens with any other teams."

To win out, the Colts must show better consistency than they have over the past six weeks. Since Nov. 10, the team has alternated wins and losses every week, most recently beating Houston 25-3 last Sunday. However, Indianapolis' inability to string together impressive performances could be costly come playoff time.

Coach Chuck Pagano said he is not worried about the team's streaky play.

"I just think these guys are able to move on, win or lose," Pagano said on his weekly radio show. "They are able to put the last game behind them, make corrections that you always have and stick to the process. It's the next game. Stick to the process. Our guys do a great job of that."

The Chiefs (11-3) have bounced back from their three-game losing streak by scoring a combined 101 points in two road wins. Running back Jamaal Charles had 195 yards receiving and accounted for five touchdowns in last Sunday's 56-31 rout of Oakland.

The win sealed a playoff berth for the Chiefs, an impressive accomplishment after last season's 2-14 finish.

"Anytime you can clinch a playoff spot, it's special," quarterback Alex Smith said. "Obviously, there's still some left to go here, in the division, but yeah, it's special. It's what you're playing for, it's what you worked for all offseason to get to the postseason."

The Chiefs will need Denver to lose at least one of its final two games in order to earn a first-round bye. If they are unable to pass the Broncos, the Chiefs will be the AFC's fifth seed and could well face the Colts again in two weekends in Indianapolis.

"I'll probably tell you the same thing that I told you when we played Denver, you give it the best shot your first time and then you come back, two weeks later, and give it your best shot then," coach Andy Reid said of the possibility of facing the Colts twice. "That's how we'll approach it."

Charles leads the AFC in rushing yards with 1,181 -- he's also hauled in a team-high 65 receptions -- and a Kansas City offense that's averaged 5.3 yards per carry the past five weeks figures to be eager to run this week. Indianapolis lost middle linebacker Pat Angerer for the season due to a knee injury suffered against the Texans.

Charles nearly single-handedly took down the Colts last Dec. 23, rushing for 226 yards and a touchdown on 22 carries. But the Chiefs turned it over three times and Andrew Luck's fourth-quarter touchdown pass to Reggie Wayne gave the Colts a 20-13 win at Arrowhead.

Though Kansas City has won by a combined 60 points the past two weeks, there are still issues to fix on the defensive end. Over their past eight games, the Chiefs have allowed 47 plays of 20 or more yards, the most in the NFL.

"Yeah, we have to cut down on that," Reid said. "Big plays can hurt you, obviously. We're addressing that and we'll get that worked out. I wouldn't get hung up on it, too much now. The final score is what you're looking at, that and turnovers.

The Chiefs have been quite good in that regard, producing an NFL-best plus-21 turnover differential and a league-high 35 takeaways after getting seven against Oakland.

Turnovers might be hard to come by in this game. Indianapolis and Kansas City are tied for the fewest turnovers in the league with 14, and the Colts have only given it away three times in seven road games.

Chiefs-Colts scouting report (http://www.kansascity.com/2013/12/21/4706876/chiefs-colts-scouting-report.html) from the Kansas City Star

December 14

When the Chiefs run
EDGE >> CHIEFS
The Chiefs have seriously cranked up the running game as Jamaal Charles is averaging 120 yards in his last four outings. The Raiders are 12th in the league against the run, but Charles still managed to rush for 78 yards and two touchdowns in 22 carries the first time they met, and he was far from full strength because of foot blisters. Look for the Chiefs to try to pound away here.

When the Chiefs pass
EDGE >> COLTS
Chiefs quarterback Alex Smith has performed at a very high level for the last month, and that’s an encouraging sign for a Chiefs team that will have to score points if it wants to do anything in the postseason. But Indianapolis features one of the league’s best pass rushers in Robert Mathis (left), and cornerbacks Vontae Davis and Darius Butler are coming off strong outings

When the Colts run
EDGE >> CHIEFS
Much-maligned running back Trent Richardson ran for 64 yards and caught a touchdown pass last week against Houston, one of his best performances since he joined the Colts via trade in September, but Donald Brown has been the more effective back. Regardless, the Chiefs’ run defense has been solid in recent weeks and the Colts’ interior run blocking has been shaky, at best.

When the Colts pass
EDGE >> COLTS
The Colts had some success against Houston last week by airing the ball out, and in Andrew Luck, they have a quarterback physically gifted enough to take advantage of the weaknesses of the aggressive single-high coverages the Chiefs prefer. Indianapolis’ offensive line has been banged up all season, but tackles Anthony Castonzo and Gosder Cherilus have been solid on the outside, and the Chiefs’ pass rush isn’t what it was earlier in the season.

Special teams
EDGE >> CHIEFS
Pat McAfee booms kickoffs and punts, and Adam Vinatieri drills field goals. Arguably, the Colts’ tandem has had a better statistical season than the Chiefs’ kicker Ryan Succop and punter Dustin Colquitt. But with four return touchdowns, the Chiefs still have one of the league’s most dangerous kickoff and punt return units, one that can turn a game.

Coaching
EDGE >> CHIEFS
Andy Reid has to be considered a coach of the year candidate. The Chiefs were 2-14 last season and are 11-3 in his first year as coach. Chuck Pagano (left) leads a team that has shown tremendous improvement in his two years, but Reid is simply having one of his best seasons and gets the edge.

X-factor
EDGE >> CHIEFS
As if playing at Arrowhead Stadium isn’t hard enough for opponents, it’s probably going to be cold and snowy, which is bad news for a dome team like the Colts. That could serve to slow down their passing attack while making it more of a rough-and-tumble game, which benefits the Chiefs.

Bottom Line: Chiefs 27-Colts 24
Indianpolis has the weapons to beat the Chiefs. But at the end of the day, home-field advantage could give the Chiefs the edge in a game that might not be that close if Luck doesn’t deliver and channel his inner Peyton Manning or Philip Rivers.

Colts Notable Quotable should read: "He's playing fast, physical. He's gaining confidence. Last three weeks, you could see it. Each and every week, he's gotten better. He's certainly trending in the right direction and playing a physical brand of football the way we want to play it." Colts coach Chuck Pagano on the continued development of rookie OLB Bjoern Werner, who recorded his first NFL sack in last week's win over AFC South rival Houston."

Interesting that that since the offensive explosion four weeks ago that we are somehow how a "better" team according to most "experts" at 2-2 than we were at 9-0 when our defense was suffocating. Offense certainly does inspire confidence. Not only in the fans, but also in the players ... You can sense it. The difference now is that if all three facets of the team are clicking on any given day, there is NO team that will beat these Chiefs. That is a tall order though as, except for the Redskins, game we have not seen it. Anyway, after so many painful losses to the Colts, I'm ready for a serious pounding to be laid on Luck and his boys today. Go Chiefs!

Can we offically declare kendrick lewis dead weight and a liability?

what the **** is going on with the receiver corps? Why is every throw a center cross route? they are clearly leaving this route open on purpose so they can ****ing stuff it well short of first downs.

How many times after the first drive were we going to have to endure watching yet another perfectly fine pass dropped?

How are we the only team in football that doesnt know that a pick route cant be formed by actively blocking the DB (fasano, hello!!!).

What the **** is going on with these wide open receivers down field?!?! these cant ALL be kendrick lewis' fault!!! did we lose all faith in man covg and go to ****-zone and do an even worse job covering in zone? QBs like luck will carve that **** up like its ****ing thanksgiving day!

Something isn't right for sure. Ever since the bye week, the Chiefs can't seem to put it together playing at Arrowhead. I don't have a clue as to why, but that's the way it's been.

For those wanting the opening playoff game at home, I'd suggest you rethink it & the Chiefs aren't likely getting it anyway. If the Chiefs lose today and the Donks win, then you can scratch any hopes of a home play-off game & I don't know why anyone would want that anyway, the way things have gone this season.

The Chiefs will be "One & Done" in the playoffs! This year most people said the Chiefs can't win against a decent team, well guys....I agree! Good God. I am regretting my decision to write a summary of this game. This ENTIRE TEAM couldn't look more pathetic than they do right now. There is ZERO effort coming from this team from any player not name Charles. The O-line is horrific. The D-line is getting ZERO pressure even though they're playing against a ridiculously poor O-line. The secondary is leaving guys wide open and not caring at all whether they tackle anyone.

Seriously... which of these teams plays in a dome again? Chiefs are playing some horrifically pathetic football right now and they should be ashamed of themselves.

Either that... or everything I and every other writer across this country have been saying is true... the Chiefs have played a pathetically easy schedule to this point and good teams are exposing them. If the Chiefs aren't getting turnovers, the defense and offense isn't good enough to win games. It's that simple.

PATHETIC.

Knile Davis has handled the football today like a wet bar of soap.

He had one fumble in extremely cold conditions. RB's fumble. Charles fumbled last week. I'm not that upset about his fumble. He's not the only one who's put the ball on the ground today. The Colts have fumbled 3x today but the ball went out of bounds. That happens in cold conditions.

The offensive line has been dominated and hasn't allowed the team to keep the ball.

This game is over.

Chiefs are one and done in the playoffs. Especially when you consider they'll be playing this team in the first round instead of sitting at home like they COULD be. This game proved to me that the Chiefs are nothing but above average and the benefactors of an amazing turnover ratio. The Chiefs can't win if they don't get turnovers. They can't beat good teams and more than likely, we'll see them lose next week in San Diego as well... and they didn't even make the playoffs. This is a defense that was designed to combat QBs like Luck, Rivers, and Manning, but there's not a team in the league these 3 guys would rather play than this porous secondary in KC.

This team should be picking in the middle third of the draft, but won't because of an easy early schedule and a ridiculous TO ratio. Quite unfortunate for the Chiefs, yet again.

Never understood when people say "Last time we played them we won @ their Stadium" That was 2011! Or when the "NFC East has beaten the AFC West" yadda, yadda. Well that was 2011 & we have a different team correct? Sorry Brdempsey69...That's a useless statement!

No it's not a useless statement. You simply don't get it. It pointed out that victory in Indy has happened & it is possible it could happen again. They'll probably have a healthy Justin Houston in that playoff game, for starters. If you want to go ahead and dismiss the Chiefs chances of winning in that game in 2 weeks, then you go ahead and do that. Don't count me in with you, because I believe they do have a chance. The Chiefs have played much better on the road this year than at home, in case you haven't noticed.

It is a useless statement when you consider that was the year Manning was out for his surgeries. That Colts team is completely different, and is nothing compared to this team. That having been said, I am not counting us out. I expect it to be a much closer game.

I've decided that we need some white WRs. Apparently, they're the only WRs you can actually trust to run correct routes and actually give any kind of effort whatsoever. Whalen is just one in a long line of white WRs that have absolutely destroyed the Chiefs this season.

I do not believe a persons skin color has anything to do with their abilities, or lack thereof, on the football field.

And is Manning going to be there this time around? No, he will not be. I'm well aware that this a different Colts team than two years ago, as well as being aware that this is a different Chiefs team than in 2011 -- and the very realistic possibility of seeing a different Chiefs team in 2 weeks than what we saw today.

The point was, that the Chiefs can win there in Indy in two weeks & there's nothing useless at all about that. The Rams have already shown that the Colts can be had at Indy. The Colts are NOT invincible on their home field, anymore than the Chiefs have been on their home-field this year.

Wish we could prove that we can be a strong road team in SD next weekend but it would be all for nothing. Here's to checking out our 2nd and 3rd stringers guys and gals

The Chiefs may not win in SD next week, but it will not surprise me at all if they make a better showing than today.
