Notes: The NFL has reduced the amount of time to make each pick in the first round from 15 minutes to 10.
This year, the prospective draftees are permitted to select their own "Walk up" music. That should be interesting!

The Houston Texans are on the clock.

Thanks, TopekaRoy. I'll start with some pre-draft speculation that I've been reading & that's the top 5 WR's may be off the board by the time the Chiefs pick at #23. If that happens, then I suspect the Chiefs could be furiously trying to trade down.

TopekaRoy
05-08-2014, 05:13 PM
It looks like there will be a lot of teams looking to trade back in this draft. That could make it harder for the Chiefs to find a willing partner or force them to settle for less in return.

What if nobody wanted to trade up or nobody wanted, say, picks 4 through 9? That could get weird!

brdempsey69
05-08-2014, 05:21 PM
Regardless of what happens with the top draft pick, the Chiefs have got to hit on those choices in rounds 3 through 6. This is what catapulted Seattle into SB contention -- hitting on those mid-to-late round choices, consistently.

brdempsey69
05-08-2014, 07:40 PM
It figures. There's already talk of the Falcons trying to trade out of the #6 spot and seemingly trying to avoid taking one of the top 3 Tackles and you know that Pioli is leading the charge. All the pundits have been saying the Falcons need to take one of the top 3 Tackles to bolster Matt Ryan's protection & for obvious reason. Ryan got sacked 44 times and hit somewhere in the neighborhood of 300 times. If the Falcons pass on one of those Tackles, I wouldn't blame Matt Ryan for sending Pioli a personal message saying "Thanks, prick". What a mindless idiot the Falcons are stuck with in Pioli.

By contrast, Andy Reid just stated that Eric Fisher is working like a maddog to get ready for the upcoming season and you can bet Alex Smith is happy about that. Although Fisher has lots of room for improvement, I'm still glad the Chiefs took him.

it sounds like Rich Eisen has a crush on Johnny Football.

brdempsey69
05-08-2014, 08:19 PM
Clowney at #1 to Houston as projected. Talent is there, but he has to learn to bring it 100% every time. I thought Lewan handled him pretty well in the Bowl game over a year ago.

Rams up next.

TopekaRoy
05-08-2014, 08:20 PM
the Texans take Clowney. No surprise there.

Rams are on the clock.

TopekaRoy
05-08-2014, 08:25 PM
It looks like everyone is going to take the full 10 minutes hoping to trade back, but nobody is biting.

TopekaRoy
05-08-2014, 08:26 PM
Scout.com has 4 OT in the top 10. That makes the Brandon Albert signing luck REALLY dumb!

brdempsey69
05-08-2014, 08:26 PM
Greg Robinson to the Rams. Good pick. They need O-Line help. Robinson can play Tackle or Guard.

Jags up next.

Scout.com has 4 OT in the top 10. That makes the Brandon Albert signing look REALLY dumb!

I agree that Miami overreached for Albert and they were fools for passing on Lane Johnson last year.

TopekaRoy
05-08-2014, 08:29 PM
The Rams took OT Greg Robinson at #2 overall, and people criticize the Chiefs for selecting Fisher at #1 last year. That just shows you how much GMs value good OTs.

matthewschiefs
05-08-2014, 08:32 PM
Breaking news the jags are still the jags

brdempsey69
05-08-2014, 08:34 PM
Oh Wow !! The Jags took Bortles. QB's being taken could push players down to KC that they didn't think would be there.

Jags needed a QB and they don't have to play him right away, but they had to get a QB so the pick makes sense.

TopekaRoy
05-08-2014, 08:34 PM
Take THAT, Johnny football! Scout.com had Bortles ranked at 18th. a bit of a reach?

Lovie Smith said "Josh McCown is our starting QB." That didn't last long!

TopekaRoy
05-08-2014, 08:35 PM
Browns trade up to 4. I bet they take a WR.

TopekaRoy
05-08-2014, 08:37 PM
Browns take Watkins. No surprise there.

brdempsey69
05-08-2014, 08:38 PM
Browns trade up to 4. I bet they take a WR.

Buffalo traded to up and gave up a #1 next year. Sammy Watkins is the guy they took. Good player, but I question giving up a 2015 #1, with this draft class being deep at WR in 2014.

Oakland is on the clock.

TopekaRoy
05-08-2014, 08:39 PM
Man I hate "selfies." Doesn't he think he can find a better pick of him with Goodell on line?

brdempsey69
05-08-2014, 08:43 PM
Oakland selected Khalil Mack LB, Buffalo. They needed Defensive help no doubt.

TopekaRoy
05-08-2014, 08:48 PM
Will the Falcons take a WR, a TE or o-line?

brdempsey69
05-08-2014, 08:52 PM
What!! The Falcons took a Tackle? Did they kick Pioli out of the draft room and give him the night off? Good pick by Atlanta.

I'm watching this via NFL Network, but it's being ruined by those two turdbuckets doing the commentary, Matt Millen and Charlie Casserly who talk like they're experts, but as GM's couldn't manage to take care of a wet dream.

2010chiefs
05-08-2014, 08:53 PM
Good pick for the Raiders. Not good for the Chiefs to go against every year .

TopekaRoy
05-08-2014, 08:54 PM
Good pick by Atlanta. Their defense sucked last year.

Now Lovie's Bucs are on the clock. I was thinking he was in Jacksonville. Right state, wrong city.

Two receivers gone in the first 7 picks.

brdempsey69
05-08-2014, 09:00 PM
Tampa Bay took Mike Evans as many predicted. that's the second WR off the board. Could be as many as 6 taken in the 1st round.

The Vikings have traded their pick to Cleveland. Browns jump from#9 to #8 for a 5th round pick.

TopekaRoy
05-08-2014, 09:04 PM
Browns swapped with Vikings to move up one spot.

No way is Sammy Watkins worth two First Round picks

TopekaRoy

brdempsey69

Vikings take Anthony Barr, LB UCLA.

So....Latest speculation on what we do with #23?

Dorsey said "best player". Depends on who falls & who Dorsey thinks is the best player for the Chiefs.

Lions take TE Eric Ebron.

TopekaRoy
05-08-2014, 09:14 PM
Vikings take defense. LB Barr. pretty much ANY pick would make them better.

Dumb move by the Giants. I don't want the Chiefs to take an OT with their first pick but if Martin falls all the way to 23 he would be a steal.

brdempsey69

Agree. I like the pick, IF FORD CAN STAY HEALTHY. There are serious questions about his back and therefore his durability.
I think the Chiefs countered the Raiders pick of Mack, with this pick of Ford. Ford will transition to OLB. Hali is getting old and has already leveled off and is/will decline sooner than later.
Also, KC's defense was easily handled without Hali/Houston both playing at the same time. Ford offers insurance.

He plays Tamba and Houston's position. Not TJ's position. He's a 3-4 OLB. Not a 3-4 DE. The only downside w/ Ford (potentially) is that he's a liability against the run. He needs to be a damn good pass rusher. Tyson Jackson was not tasked with rushing the passer. He filled gaps.

I dont understand why people are so low on Lee...he would have been a top 10 pick last year if he was able to enter the draft. He had no one to throw to him and when he had an average qb in Barkley he tore it up...guess we are fine with having Alex throw to a bunch of career back ups and wearing JC out way sooner than necessary because he is our only offensive threat.

Ford will play OLB and he can rush the passer. An off the edge pass-rusher was a need. Hali can't go on forever. Ford had a monster game in the Senior Bowl and though the week of practices. He fits the Chiefs Defense.

People need to get it through their heads that the Scott Pioli era is over. Dorsey/Reid place a premium on O-Lineman and Defensive Front 7 players with their top draft picks. They don't cater to hero-worshipers or fantasy footballers.

The Chiefs could be getting another Clay Matthews here and who would not want that?

I think it had more to do with he wasn't that good at rushing the passer then him not being asked to. If he were good at it then there's no doubt he would have been asked to do it. Why wouldn't they want more pressure on the QB. He wasn't asked to because he just wasn't good at it

Off the top of my head I can't even remember who our 4th starting linebacker is. Houston, Hali Johnson and ?. He's got to be an upgrade over question mark.

Most of the time we aren't in a traditional 3-4 set anyway. We are either playing a nickel package or blitzing a LB (or Berry) to give a 4-3 look. He makes our front 7 better than it was yesterday. And the pass rush is the key to our defense.

Another WR who is better than a bunch of backups would make Smith better...thats an absolutely ridiculous claim. If you have people that drop a crap ton of passes another WR who can catch wouldnt make our QB better? Or maybe would allow our top tier running back to play a few more years because he wouldnt have to be the top running back and top wide receiver.

Yep well there are 2 different styles that play defense in the NFL and one is a 4-3 and one is a 3-4. A DE in a 4-3 is more likely to play an OLB in a 3-4. Example Mario Williams, Clay Mathews, our own Tamba...they played 4-3 DE and then 3-4 OLB. There is some research for you

So what position is our biggest need? We drafted cummings last year to play fs. I would say wr and guard and then cb and an actual 3-4 end.

S, CB, O-line, WR

Manzel has a TON of upside. But outside of that they got the 1st player they wanted with Gilbert AND gained a 1st rounder to boot. That's a pretty good start

I agree with Ray Lewis' assessment. Johnny Football better learn to slide in the NFL. I'm not taking anything away from his mad skills but if he tries too much of that running around stuff he will get his clock thoroughly cleaned.

As a player, Ford is a pass rusher first. He is very quick off the ball, with an explosive first step. He stays low and knows how to use his hands. He has the snap and power through his hips to bull-rush and the quick feet, body control, and flexibility to be effective with moves and countermoves. He shows an excellent burst off of blocks to close to the quarterback. He consistently shows he can dip his shoulder and get under a blocker.

Ford can be inconsistent against the run. He lacks natural size and bulk, and at times, can be slow to get off the blocks of big lineman. He is instinctive and quick to find the ball but can be over powered. He is better when he uses his athleticism to slip blocks and run to the ball. As a pursuit player, he is very good because he consistently takes good angles, is a top competitor, and has speed.

Ford will be best as a 3-4 outside linebacker in the NFL. He has played on his feet in the past and has shown he can drop into coverage. Playing that position, he can still use his pass-rushing skills to his advantage. There are some 4-3 clubs that will like him, but I don't think he can be an every-down player playing as a 4-3 defensive end. He just won't be able to hold up versus the run at a top level.

It sounds like he can help our pass rush and our pass coverage. He will need to get stronger and bigger and he can do that. We might not want to use him in obvious run situations, but that doesn't happen a lot against Manning and Rivers. Overall, this is a very positive assessment.

Agreed. I stand by my opinion, which i understand is just that - an opinion just like everyone else. I dont mind adding depth at OLB but you DO NOT take depth players in the 1st round unless you are a super bowl contender and have the luxury to take the actual BPA...you take the BPA that will start and that would have been any WR or OL that was still left. We are not the Patriots, Broncos, or Seahawks and cannot take the actual BPA, we still have holes and we need to take the BPA that will start, not purely the BPA.

I will never turn my back on the Chiefs, and I will support Dee Ford, just like every other Chiefs player. I just wish we would have helped out our offense and more so Charles and not have to run 35% of the offense through 1 player...he is too good to run him to death and lose out on another 2-4 years because we overuse him.

With that said...welcome to the family Dee Ford, and lets get behind Dorsey and Reid and hope they find us some gems in the later rounds...not having a 2nd rounder is killing us this year, but lets hope the brass can find us some gems.

At Ford's Pro day at Auburn, he ran a 4.5, benched pressed 29 times, did a 10 ft broad jump, a 35-inch vertical jump.

One trick pony edge rusher. Hope he can get after the QB. Could get smothered by bigger OTs. I'm just glad it wasn't a WR (specifically Marqise Lee).

I think Ford was a great pick. He's not as sexy as some other picks could have been, but we need elite pass rushing in this division. Not to mention, Hali isn't sticking around forever. In fact, I wonder if he's not already on the trading block for a pick or two in this draft. The Chiefs are going to have to pay a ton of money to Houston after the 2015 season. He'll basically be taking Hali's money and Ford will be taking Houston's. This was a cap-managing move... and a good one to boot. Even if Ford has to sit behind Hali and Houston for a season or two, he'll just be that much better when the Chiefs have to rely on him.

I wouldn't mind seeing the Chiefs trade away Hali and/or Flowers tomorrow. We could use help at DB and OL. I'm becoming less and less worried about the WR position. IDK why and I know all the arguments to the contrary, but I just feel like we have some good young talent that have a really good chance at developing into something special. I don't think the Chiefs feel all that desperate to upgrade that position right now.

^^TexasChief nailed it. And to hell with those sexy picks. I want BEEF in the O-Line and Defensive Front 7 with the Chiefs top draft choices. And yes, BEEF includes off-the-edge pass-rushers.

And let us not forget that when Aldon Smith was taken #7 by the Niners in 2011, he wasn't a full time starter his first year in 2011 and was used mostly as a situational pass-rusher & was given time to fully adjust to being a standup OLB in the NFL before becoming a full-time starter in 2012. Reid has already said that Ford will be used in obvious passing situations to help the pass-rush

Also, look at the veteran mentors Ford is going to have in DJ, Hali, Poe, and DeVito. And Ford is also a great character guy.

Dorsey said that Ford was the 2nd best pass-rusher in the draft and the highest rated player on his board when it came the Chiefs turn to pick.

I'm not in love with the Ford pick, but I get it. I agree with Tex that I don't think WR is that big of a need, and the guys on the board I wasn't impressed with (they reminded me of Baldwin ... Makes the big play, but drops easy catches).

The biggest knock on Ford I have read is he isn't the best against the run, and hasn't done much in pass coverage. Well, the same criticisms were made of Houston coming out, but everyone said he had the ATHLETICISM to be an OLB that could stand up against the run and drop into coverage when necessary. By all accounts, Ford also has the athleticism, he just needs some training. Who better than Houston, Hali and DJ to teach him how to read and cover backs and TEs?

It's a little disappointing from a sentimentality standpoint that this basically is the writing on the wall that Hali is going to be gone soon, but such is life.

The only other guy I would have maybe been happier with would have ben Tuitt, but I think he is going to be a mid 2nd round pick, so it would be a bit of a reach for us. I think we were trying to trade down (screw u Cleveland!) which is why we waited til the last second to send in our pick.

Check out what he does to Manziel @ 1:05.

If he can do that to Manziel, heaven help Peyton if he hasn't chucked that ball. Ditto for Schaub and Rivers. And if this guy helps free up Poe...Cancel Christmas.

Everyone's babbling about Manziel, let's put this into perspective....He went to Cleveland. Which, as of late, has been a burial ground of QB's that thought they had promising careers.

Everybody saw what happened when Hali and Houston went down to injuries -- the Chiefs defense went pffffft. Was Eric Berry or any of the other DB's able to compensate for Hali and Houston's absence? No, not by a longshot & given time to throw, the better QB's picked the Chiefs secondary apart, so I fail to see why people thought DB was the way to go with that pick at #23.

To me, taking a D7 player makes all the sense in the world, especially one with elite pass-rush skills, which Dee Ford has. You build from front to back and not the other way around.

The media had been heavily pimping a WR to the Chiefs at #23, but the ones they liked were all off the board. The Dee Ford selection caught everybody off-guard because his name never came up in pre-draft discussions anywhere as far as who the Chiefs might take at #23. However, he was a standout at the Senior Bowl practices and in the game itself. They can use him as a situational pass-rusher & give him time to hone his all-around skills as a 3-4 OLB, just like the Niners did with Aldon Smith.

WR's and DB's will be available in later rounds & I believe Dorsey will find the Chiefs some good players in those areas.

I'm very happy with the Dee Ford selection, because it falls in line with simple common sense and logic. And hats off to Dorsey for not letting the media brow-beat him with his decision on who he selected.

Good point & I'll add another. If the Chiefs had been picking at #1 this year, who would have been the people's choice with that pick? Clowney, of course. So why are there so many complaining about drafting a player at #23 that plays the same position that Clowney plays, and yet has a better work ethic than Clowney, as well as a better motor than Clowney, and was more productive last season playing in the same conference as Clowney? Go figure.

I’m indifferent to the pick. It’s a smart move but one of minimal immediate impact. He’ll be depth this year and will see the field if Hali or Houston is hurt. They’ll probably use him very similarly to how Aldon Smith was used in SF his rookie year – in some pass rush situations. Next year, they’ll cut Hali for cap space. There will be no moving of Hali before then, so forget a trade.

I’d have preferred a trade down, but that became unlikely after PHI beat us to the punch. I trust they were trying up until the last minute judging by the time left when the pick was in. Oh well.

I’d have preferred Marquis Lee hoping to get the 2012 version. But a WR can be gotten later.

The very disconcerting thing is that when I criticized the Chiefs offseason moves, claiming the roster is worse than last year’s, everyone said “We haven’t drafted. Wonder boy Dorsey will surely address it then.” Well our best shot at an impact player was spent on the future. Ford does not strengthen one of the many weak spots on this roster.

So, what say you now? Are the Chiefs a better team on paper than last years? No, they aren’t.

Don't we all love hypocrisy? I believe John Dorsey said Dee Ford was the 2nd best pass rusher and top player on their board when their turn came at #23 and yet, many media draft "experts" and fans b!tch and complain that the Chiefs failed to address a "need" given that they already have edge rushers in Hali and Houston. Meanwhile, it's many of the same group of folks that continually preach that teams shouldn't reach or draft for "need" and that they should always draft the best player available. So which is it?

Don't know if this has been posted yet, but Bob McGinn of the Journal-Sentinel compiles some good info regarding what some scouts have to say about each years draft prospects. Here's the breakdown of Dee Ford:

DEE FORD, Auburn (6-2, 248, 4.61, 2) His game revolves almost solely on anticipating the snap. "That's how he gets everything," one scout said. "He just jumps, jumps, jumps. Just a little guy that's not a special pass rusher. He's got to be a 3-4 guy, but I don't think he's that kind of an athlete." Started 20 of 52 games at DE, finishing with 93 tackles (27 for loss) and 20 sacks. "Kind of a one-trick pony guy," a second scout said. "Just an outside rusher with limited moves at this point. He's so undersized, he's not really a factor against the run. If he doesn't win with quickness and speed right off the bat he doesn't have the strength, bulk or length to hold the point, anchor and rip off blocks." From Odenville, Ala. "He's relentless," a third scout said. "Little tight. You can play down with smaller guys. Depends how you use him."

Well, I think it is pretty clear what is about to happen. Hali is gone next year in a trade, we save $9 million in cap space and Ford replaces him.

Reid and Dorsey are rebuilding this team. The 28 to 30 year old highly paid guys are going down the road (except for maybe Alex Smith) so we can pay the younger guys that are turning into stars the kind of money they are going to be wanting. We are going to be a younger team with the cap space available to pay the "stars" that will be in the 24-26 year old range when their rookie contracts expire.

I hate to see some of my favorite "names" go, but I think it probably needs doing. I hope Dorsey and Reid will get it right.

I'm OK with the Ford pick. In this pass-happy NFL (especially the AFC West with Manning and Rivers) you have to be able to stop the QBs that throw the ball well and often. Ideally you stop them by pressuring the QB and by covering the receivers. But if you can't stop both the receivers and the passer, then you'd better be REAL good at one or the other. So it makes sense for us to make us every QB's worst nightmare since we are already better at pressuring QBs than we are at defending the receivers. It's called playing to your strength.

This pick allows the Chiefs to keep up one of the league's best pass rushing defenses for the foreseeable future. Whether Ford BECOMES the player the Chiefs expect him to be is one thing... but assuring we have a consistent pass rush for years to come is a good, smart move. Looking at the board, you will be hard-pressed to find a player who represented a better value or was deemed a better player than Ford at #23. This was a good pick and one that the Chiefs can continue to build their defense on.

I’ve always been a BPAN guy myself, meaning that if you have two guys rated similarly, but one better than the other, if the second fills a need take him. Had Taylor Lewan slipped to us for some dumb reason, by all means take him, no matter what.

In the case of Dee Ford, your scouting report does little to convince me the Chiefs got the BPA regardless of need. Regardless, anyone who says he doesn’t fit a need isn’t familiar with the Chiefs and their cap and that Hali will be 32 next year and count $9M against it. It’s just not an immediate need so those who thought the draft would fill the holes in the roster were mistaken.

To me, that’s a credit to John Dorsey. That is how the smart teams draft. Although the roster is worse than last year’s and this season will be a step back it’s promising to know a “Tyson Jackson sequel” won’t likely occur during Dorsey’s watch.
