ESPN Game Preview (http://scores.espn.go.com/nfl/nflpreview?gameId=400554291)
Missing two defensive starters is not the way Kansas City hoped to head into a matchup against Peyton Manning, who shredded the Chiefs in a pair of Denver Broncos' victories last season.

Coach Andy Reid is confident Kansas City can overcome the unfortunate circumstance, but he's also likely focusing on how to get Jamaal Charles more touches during Sunday's matchup in Denver.

The Chiefs lost linebacker Derrick Johnson and tackle Mike DeVito to ruptured Achilles tendons in last week's season-opening 26-10 loss to Tennessee, forcing Kansas City to make some roster moves.

It signed tackle Kevin Vickerson, who spent the last four seasons with the Broncos and could start immediately, and promoted linebacker Jerry Franklin from the practice squad.

Reid said he isn't sure how much either will play Sunday, but he knows his team can't dwell on the injuries.

"The other guys haven't had as many reps. I hate to get into that because it sounds like you're belly aching up here and that's not what we do," Reid said. "The next guy, we expect to come in and play."

Stopping Manning will be difficult no matter who is on the field. He threw for 323 yards and a touchdown in a 27-17 victory over previously undefeated Kansas City on Nov. 17 and 403 yards and five TDs in a 35-28 win Dec. 1.

Manning has thrown 11 touchdowns while winning all four matchups with the Chiefs since joining the Broncos, but he still believes he'll have a tough task ahead of him.

"You hate to see what happened to DeVito and Derrick, those are two excellent players," Manning said. "But they're going to have guys step up like all well-coached teams do."

The Chiefs enter as a heavy underdog after last week's loss, when Charles had seven carries for 19 yards and four catches for 15. Charles finished fourth in the NFL in offensive touches last season, and Reid expressed regret for not getting his primary threat the ball more.

Quarterback Alex Smith didn't have much of an explanation, either.

"We just failed to get him the ball. Absolutely. One of our biggest playmakers, if not the biggest playmaker," Smith said. "Certainly need to get him involved more. That's on all of us, though. For me, I'm kind of worried about executing and doing my job."

Charles averaged 4.9 yards per carry against Denver last season, and he's expecting to play a big role this week.

"I want to see the ball more and coach knows that," Charles said. "It's a long season, just one game. We can get worse or we can get good. My job is to get the team good."

Kansas City also could benefit from the return of receiver Dwayne Bowe, who served a one-game suspension last week for violating the league's substance abuse policy.

"We'll ease him back in," Reid said. "He really hasn't done much for a few weeks. He had the quad (injury) there before his suspension."

The Chiefs may need plenty of offense to keep pace with the high-powered Broncos, who jumped out to a 24-point lead before hanging on to beat Indianapolis 31-24 in their season opener last Sunday night.

Manning threw for 269 yards and three touchdowns -- all to tight end Julius Thomas in the first half -- but Denver gained only 87 of its 361 yards in the second half.

"We've got to find a way to play all four quarters as an offense," Manning said. "Thank goodness the defense picked us up when the offense wasn't doing their job quite as well."

Denver's only second-half score came on a 3-yard run from second-year back Montee Ball, who finished with 67 yards on 23 carries. It marked Ball's first career start after playing last season behind Knowshon Moreno, who left for Miami.

"I thought Montee ran really hard," Manning said. "I just kind of liked the look in his eye in his first start. I think he'll just keep getting better all season."

Facing the Kansas City defense again might inspire Ball. He rushed for a career-best 117 yards in the last meeting, including a 45-yard scamper that helped him average 9.0 yards per carry.

Another solid performance from Ball certainly would help, especially in an important early season matchup with an AFC West rival.

"I think our division is the toughest division in football," Manning said. "You throw what happened last week out the window. It's a division game, two teams very familiar with each other, physical football and that's how we're going to have to play on Sunday."

It would have to be off a fumble, an INT isn't going to happen with their wide-outs vs our secondary.

Challenge by Reid. Let's hope they rule it a catch.

Another challenge by Reid. Possible turnover as Sean Smith did pick up the ball.

brdempsey69

Throw the damn ball vertically and not horizontally.

Like I said earlier, there was no excuse for that botched 3rd and 2 play on that previous Offensive series & it proved to be very costly.

Eydugstr
09-14-2014, 06:00 PM
No pressure on Manning = 21-10.

Exactly. Where's the pass rush? When's he's got any pressure, it's up for grabs.

And yes the refs are tripping over themselves to help out the Broncos at this point.

You can clearly see the refs are on the broncos pay roll. Reid should have never needed to use the challenge flags cuz they were are obvious. Any they still using the pick plays. So cheap. As long as manning dont when the super bowl il consider every year a success for me.

09-14-2014, 07:46 PM
Reid doesn't like to run. Especially when we get stuffed a couple of times. 1st and goal from the 5 and it ends up being 3 and goal from the 19. That's bad play calling. Cutting succor to save money was a terrible descision. It's in is head santos is done. Third and goal from the 2 and you run it up the middle with less than a minute. Coaching hurt is today more than anything. The refs weren't very good either. But how can anyone be mad. That was a really good football game

I'd say Santos has got one more week to redeem himself or he's going to be history.

Just let Alex Smith play his game once they're in the red zone. He's been in this league long enough he can see what the defense is giving better than the sideline can. We had an opportunity to win this game and the coaching staff took it away.

Exactly. Alex smith had a great day and should be able to call his own plays cuz reid sucks. Why run it up the middle. Run a stretch play. You think denver was fooled cuz you had trips out. Go out side anduse the feild to your advantage. And santos your time is limited if you keep this up. You cost us the game. Bad kickoff amd missed fg.

After all this we still was in the game which suprised me. Our defense showed up in the second half. Alex smith had one of his best games in chiefs uniform today.

Donkeys fans better enjoy whatever success they have this year, because it could be their last look at the sun before the coming storm, if Manning hangs up the cleats after this year. They're going to come crashing down hard. Meanwhile the Chiefs will still have Alex and a full stock of draft picks in 2015. This is going to be worth waiting for. Mark it down.

Not going for it on fourth and inches from the 50 like 30 yards of field position means anything. He scored a TD anyway. But didn't give us a chance. I love that Andy Reid is our coach but this whole thing of double duty is just stupid to me. Let Pederson call the game. I'm not one for moral victories. We can compete so at least there's that.

Alex Smith is a damn good quarter back. The critics need to ease up off him. He made some absolutely terrific throws. And Eric Fisher had a damn good game against an elite level pass rusher. So things aren't as bad as some would have you believe.

Can you say that again about alex smith. Im so tired of all the knocks on him saying hes just a game manager and cant throw down field cuz he had a great game and we had alot of big down field plays today and even last week we did.

I like reid as head coach but not as offensive coordinator.

Absolutley this! Look at what Dorsey did in Green Bay. He inherited some crap and has been forced to deal with. But we are positioning ourself for the future. We have two potential QBOTF in Murray and Bray. A young line. Lots of picks the next two drafts. We may have to suffer a little this year. But we aren't dead. Manning three for 3 TD's hung 21 on us in the first half. We haves 19 play drive in Denver with a thrown together offensive line. We got to Peyton today. Good stuff to come

I was more encouraged today playing the broncos today then last week against the lesser opponent in the titans. So which cheifs are we? Are we the ones that lost to the titans or the ones who almost beat the nfl crowned broncos. Damned the refs. Lol

There was that one bad play by Fisher on that play where Alex did get hit and it was close to being a fumble, but overall Fisher was not getting dominated. A guy called me on the phone who watched the game & said he held up very well for the most part. In year 3, Fisher could become a real stud.

Don't worry, the Donkeys will not be winning any SB this year. They spent all that money for their Defense in FA and their Defense don't look any better than it did last year. The Chiefs Offense did more to stop themselves today than the Donkey's defense did.

Today's game should have been a blow-out in the Donkey favor, all things considered, but it wasn't. It'll probably be a repeat of last year where Manning piles up big stats in the regular season & then drops a big pile in the back of his shorts in the post-season.

i have not posted on here since the playoff loss, but after watching todays game i just have to comment. the CHIEFS are are much better team than the loss to the titans would indicate. we had chances to win this game but questionable play calling doomed us. i whole heartedly agree we should have gone for it on 4th down at the 50yd line w/5min to go in the half. why we continued to run on 1st down w/6 in the box??? i thought maybe it was to set up a play action pass but it never came. then at the end of the game w/a much better than average running QB we never ran a single roll out run/pass option in 4 plays. with all the pressure and an inability to gain yds on run plays, moving the pocket and giving smith some romm to run if needed seemed a logical corse yet andy felt otherwise and condemmed us to another hearbreaking defeat. btw eric fisher played a heck of a game, even the play that was a near fumble by smith was mor smiths fault, he was supposed to have gotten rid of the ball sooner. mi think we need another offensive play caller, andy just doe not seem to get it based on these first two games.

I didnt see how he sprained his ankle on that one. Ward just was standing up when he got to charles. Just poor technique but dont think it was a cheap shot. Did see the twist of the helmet at the end though.

The twist at the end is what IMO makes it a cheap shot. He tackled him by turning his neck one then at the end after Charles was down he turned it the other and gave a little shove. Maybe It's just how I see it but to me that's a cheap shot

If say Hali did that to Peyton he would be thrown out of the game

Yea I see what your saying. But I just look at as showing attitude is all. But yes the donkies would be crying for a penalty and the way the refs called the game they would have thrown a flag.

I'll be over it tomorrow but I didn't post during the game for a while after that because I was screaming about it. But for tonight Ward can go :sign0053: himself

I do believe that I heard he was in at least one play. In obvious passing situations in the upcoming games, I hope to see more of him.

brdempsey69: I totally agree with your statement! We'll be looking sharp next year. Now I'm reeling this year with the release of Ryan Succop. Santos was a terrible choice.

Yep....They wanted a cheaper kicker...and they found one...
