ESPN Game Preview (http://scores.espn.go.com/nfl/nflpreview?gameId=400554251)

After being labeled a bust early in his tenure with the San Francisco 49ers, Alex Smith appeared to turn things around before losing his job for the final time in 2012.

Since then, the embattled quarterback has made the most of a fresh start with the Kansas City Chiefs.

Smith returns to the city where his career began Sunday looking to help the Chiefs to a third straight win and their first in San Francisco in 43 years.

The No. 1 overall draft pick out of Utah in 2005, Smith seemed to be fighting an uphill battle in the Bay Area after throwing one touchdown and 11 interceptions during his rookie season.

In the years that followed, he worked his way back from injury and regained the starting job after getting benched. Smith, however, finally lost his hold on the position for good in 2012 when he sustained a concussion in Week 10.

Colin Kaepernick replaced his mentor and never relinquished the job even once Smith was healthy, guiding the 49ers (2-2) to their first Super Bowl appearance in 18 years.

"One of the classiest people I've ever been around, just an all-around great guy. I don't think anyone could have handled it any better than he did," Kaepernick recalled this week. "He definitely made things go a lot smoother."

With Kaepernick entrenched under center, the 49ers traded Smith to the Chiefs in February 2013. He took over a leadership role on a team that had gone 2-14 in 2012, leading Kansas City to an 11-5 record and a playoff appearance last season.

Smith and the Chiefs (2-2) head to Levi's Stadium coming off an impressive 41-14 home win over New England on Monday night. Smith completed 20 of 26 passes for 248 yards and three touchdowns, giving him six scores in his last two games and no picks since Week 1.

Kansas City has dropped four straight road meetings dating to its only win in San Francisco, a 26-17 victory Dec. 6, 1971.

"No bitterness at all," Smith said of his return. "What happened there the end of the (2012) year, losing my job, you get to that point and I say this a lot, worrying about anything that was outside your control and dwelling on any of that stuff is only going to have a negative impact."

Kaepernick has been the target of criticism this season for missing his receivers and failing to protect the ball. He ranks 19th with a 91.2 passer rating after going 17 of 30 for 218 yards with two touchdowns and one interception in Sunday's 26-21 home win over previously unbeaten Philadelphia that snapped a two-game losing streak.

The fourth-year pro could be without one of his top targets after Vernon Davis left the contest with a back injury. The veteran tight end is day to day after he had missed the previous game with a left ankle injury.

It's also uncertain whether right tackle Anthony Davis will play after sustaining a left knee injury in his season debut.

San Francisco is likely to rely on Frank Gore again after he had a career-best 55-yard touchdown reception and rushed for a season-high 119 yards against the Eagles.

Coach Jim Harbaugh would like to quiet his critics with a win after reports surfaced last weekend that the fourth-year coach has lost the faith of his players.

"Personally I think that's a bunch of crap," he responded. "People say what they say."

Even without All-Pro linebackers NaVorro Bowman (knee) and Aldon Smith (suspended), San Francisco held LeSean McCoy and the Eagles to just 22 yards rushing on 12 attempts.

The 49ers lead the NFC in rushing defense (69.8 yards per game) and rank second in total defense (287.3). Since giving up 127 yards rushing to Dallas in the opener, they've allowed a combined 152 in the past three games.

San Francisco faces a stiff test against the Chiefs, who rank fourth with 145.3 rushing yards per game. Jamaal Charles ran for 92 yards and a touchdown in his return from an ankle injury Monday, while Knile Davis added 107 on the ground.

Joe McKnight, however, has been placed on injured reserve after suffering a torn Achilles tendon against the Patriots.

The Chiefs won the previous two meetings in 2006 and '10 by a combined score of 72-10, though both games were in Kansas City.

Scouting Report from the Kansas City Star (http://www.kansascity.com/sports/nfl/kansas-city-chiefs/article2517529.html)

When the Chiefs run

EDGE >> 49ERS

The Chiefs have morphed into a ground-oriented attack (http://www.kansascity.com/sports/nfl/kansas-city-chiefs/article2506110.html), as they’ve rushed the ball at a surprising 68-percent clip this season. They rank fourth in the league in rushing, and backup Knile Davis is the league’s fourth-leading rusher with 321 yards while starter Jamaal Charles is one of the league’s best backs. However, the 49ers rank second in the league in run defense because of their physicality and gap discipline. Their front seven is missing two stars in outside linebacker Aldon Smith and inside linebacker NaVorro Bowman, but defensive end Justin Smith (http://www.nfl.com/top100/2014#video=0ap2000000353523) and inside linebacker Patrick Willis (http://www.nfl.com/top100/2014#video=0ap2000000361706) are still great run stoppers, and safety Antoine Bethea is adept at coming up and helping out the run defense.

When the Chiefs pass

EDGE >> 49ERS

Alex Smith has been on fire the last three weeks, as he’s completed 72 percent of his passes for 689 yards, six touchdowns and zero interceptions while complementing a strong running game. He’s spread it around pretty good, too, though second-year tight end is becoming a matchup nightmare (http://www.kansascity.com/sports/nfl/kansas-city-chiefs/article2249388.html)for defenses with his speed and athleticism. Expect Reid to dial up his best stuff for Smith, who is returning to the place where he began his career (http://www.kansascity.com/sports/nfl/kansas-city-chiefs/article2492729.html), but the flip side to that is the 49ers have the league’s seventh-best pass defense, and coach Jim Harbaugh — who coached Smith for two years — knows all of his weaknesses.

When the 49ers run

EDGE >> CHIEFS

The Chiefs rank 19th in the league in run defense while the 49ers rank seventh in the league in rushing, but this could be closer that you might think. Quarterback Colin Kaepernick (http://www.nfl.com/top100/2014#video=0ap2000000350296)’s running ability is a big part of their attack with 187 rushing yards, and the Chiefs have held opposing quarterbacks to just 22 total yards this season. The 49ers use a downhill, gap-scheme power attack behind a large offensive line, but the Broncos use a similar rushing style and the Chiefs held them to 88 yards on 19 carries in week two. The Chiefs’ biggest struggles have come while defending the cutbacks in a zone-rushing scheme, but that shouldn’t be a problem Sunday. If the Chiefs know what’s coming, and they will, they can stop it, though a proud attack led by the ageless Frank Gore (http://www.nfl.com/top100/2014#video=0ap2000000357546) could still prevail.

When the 49ers pass

EDGE >> CHIEFS

This is one area where the Chiefs have a clear advantage. Kaepernick has a strong arm but is not regarded as an outstanding passer, and with the 49ers’uncertain starting-tackle situation, pass-rushing outside linebackers Tamba Hali and Justin Houston should have a chance to hunt. Left tackle Joe Staley (http://www.nfl.com/top100/2014#video=0ap2000000352722) is a three-time Pro Bowler but he’s struggled this year, and right tackle Anthony Davis is questionable for the game because of knee and ankle injuries. Star tight end Vernon Davis (http://www.nfl.com/top100/2014#video=0ap2000000356008) is also questionable with an injury, and while Michael Crabtree and Anquan Boldin are still good receivers, an improved Chiefs secondary has a chance to contain them.

Special teams

EDGE >> CHIEFS

The Chiefs’ punt-return game will get an undeniable boost with the return of De’Anthony Thomas, who brings special explosiveness to the position. The staff is excited for his return (http://www.kansascity.com/sports/nfl/kansas-city-chiefs/article2501407.html). Meanwhile, kicker Cairo Santos is coming off his strongest outing (http://www.kansascity.com/sports/spt-columns-blogs/red-zone/article2321611.html) after a shaky start, while punt Dustin Colquitt has been killing it this season as he’s second in the league in net punt average and second in punts inside the 20-yard line. 49ers kicker Phil Dawson made four field goals last week, but the 49ers punting unit surrendered two touchdowns to the Eagles last week (http://www.mercurynews.com/49ers/ci_26624744/49ers-special-teams-have-ups-and-downs-win).
Coaching

EDGE >> 49ERS

Harbaugh has led the 49ers to a Super Bowl and three straight NFC Championship Game appearances, so he gets the edge out of generable principle, though Reid has also been to a Super Bowl and reached the NFC Championship Game five times. This is close, and could easily swing toward the Chiefs if Reid continues his masterful offensive playcalling of the last three weeks.
X-factor

EDGE >> CHIEFS

The 49ers beat the Eagles last week despite reports of a locker room that has tired of his abrasive ways (http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/eye-on-football/24734707/deion-sanders-jim-harbaugh-story-is-real-49ers-players-want-him-out). Compare that to the Chiefs, who by all accounts have embraced Reid’s leadership style and bought in to his guidance. This game may be in San Francisco, but this is a chance for the Chiefs to prove they’re for real. With the bye week looming, expect the Chiefs to go all-out, too.
Bottom line: Chiefs 24-20

It’s basically a coin flip, but after what they did on Monday night against New England, it’s okay to give the benefit of the doubt to the Chiefs on what could prove to be a huge day in Kansas City sports, as the Royals have a chance to clinch the American League Divisional Series against the Angels later in the day.

TY for posting this, Roy!

Going by the stats, hope that the D is able to bottle up Kaepernick, and our offense is able to get some passing going.

Go Chiefs!

This is a absolutely must win game.. Jam receivers good pass rush. On offense play with urgency this is a issue with this offense not playing with enough urgency. This is a winnable game.

As always Roy thank you for taking the time to put this all together in one place.

I think our running game will be the deciding factor in how this game turns out. If we can get the running game going then I figure the 9ers are roadkill.

If that were to happen...The game would definitely tilt for KC. Past 3 games we've shown in drives that if we get the ball, we can really hog the clock.

A little bit of good news: SF's TE Vernon Davis and RT Anthony Davis are both inactive for today's game.

Not having Vernon Davis in should take away a big chunk of their offense, both in passing and run blocking.

I don't think Anthony Davis has played at all so far this year, so it shouldn't have too much of an effect. Their backup is Jon Martin (formerly the bullied starter in Miami). Hopefully Hali/Houston/Ford will be able to capitalize.

There was no reason to call a pass-play on that 3rd and short in the 2nd QTR and there was no reason to get pass-happy after that completion to Kelce moved the ball into Niners territory & not one single running play was called on that 3rd QTR series. No excuse whatsoever for abandoning the running game like that when you have two good back that can take it the distance any time they touch the ball.

Alex Smith has got to learn to audible out of those situations and override his coaches in those situations.

Alex Smith proved he cannot win the chiefs a game. That's 2 games he had the chance to win us.

One bad throw all game and you want to throw smith under the bus. Man get out of here. We shouldn't even been in the situation anyways. Its reids fu..cking play calling that costs us.

This game is not on Alex not one bit. And all the nay sayers can jump off a cliff. We had third and 1 twice inside the 50 and never ran it. Jamal has 16 touched and Davis has 2. This is 100% on the coaches. 100%. Throw un a fourth and 2 with 12 men on the field. This is all on the coaches. We went toe to toe with a team with. 3 straight conference championship appearances in their house. We can compete with anyone. Look to the bright side. Someone needs to get the memo to Reid. Run the MOTHER EFFIN BALL!!!!

I'll give the Chiefs O-Line some credit. They didn't give up any sacks and they were helping to get some semblance of a running game going, but Reid didn't give them enough of a chance in that department with his needless, pass-happy calling at the wrong time, that anybody with any common sense could see was completely illogical. The 49ers had 40 running plays to the Chiefs 19. The Niners weren't totally stopping the Chiefs running game -- the Chiefs just simply didn't run the ball as often as they should have.

Clark Hunt and Dorsey should bring a big turd to Reid and tell him to smoke it, instead of a victory cigar that they could have had.

I'm really proud of our defense and O line. We fell short due to play calling and crucial mistakes. Floyd making the acrobatic catch and us falling for the fake punt. I'm really proud of our Chiefs today but we need to start getting some wins!

I am asking this in all seriousness. Who's fault is it for 12 men on the field on a field goal kick, on fourth and 2 with plenty of time to go. How do the coaches effing miss that. There has to be someone responsible.

That's right. Anybody with any football sense could see that the Chiefs have a great 1-2 rushing punch with Charles and Davis and utilizing it and working your passing game off of that helped the Chiefs core two decisive victories over the Fins and Pats. Therefore, I'll never understand why Reid decided to throw that out the window completely in today's game. That's just pathetic coaching.

This team should be sitting at 4-1 right now, or at least 3-2. Not 2-3. But their own HC has kept them from having a winning record. Same damn thing as what Marty did in that '97 playoff game against the Donkeys when Marty wouldn't allow Rich Gannon to play in that game.

That's on the coaches for not counting. Theres a player that should be assigned to count as well on the feild. On a punt return you usually seee the returner pointing fingers and counting. There should be about the same ssytemon a feild goal or any situation for that matter. So the system they had failed. So both coaches and players. But it should have never got there of reid would call plays better.

Why we didn't run more I'll never get. This loss doesn't fall on the players, it's the coaches. Reid needs to be more patient with the running game.

Agreed. If you're going to hear the wrath of the boss for not doing things his way, it's easier to sit through the butt-chewing after getting something accomplished. With this being said, I don't think in any way this game falls on Alex's shoulders. That honor belongs to Reid, Peterson & Taub.

One thing I will point out...Our WR corps needs help, badly.

I can't remember who the stud line backer was in 2003 when we played there last may have been 2002. The guy was all over tony g all day priest scored a TD but that was it. We had an offense that year to boot. Think we only scored 7. We played well today despite being out in positions to not succeed. Did you see that second half time of position and zero touchdowns. We are closer than most of us thought. I wonder if Texas chief is still saying blow it up. This team should be four and one.

Quite correct. Today's loss is not on the players. They gave a great effort without question & if the Chiefs coaches don't get in their way, they can beat anybody, anywhere.

This headline right HERE (http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap3000000406294/article/bruce-arians-broncos-had-dirtiest-play-ive-ever-seen) should not come as any surprise to anyone. Thank you Bruce Arians for calling them out on this. I hope somebody does the same thing to Manning, somehow.

I watched that game and you could make an argument for a push off by the Offense on almost every deep pass, and there were a few possible holds that weren't called.

On defense/field goal blocks it is usually the team captain and/or the safeties job to count personnel. I.e. The two key people on D who aren't playing: Berry and DJ. Whomever has that responsibility to count is probably a backup who isn't used to doing it.

Andy Reid seems to be turning into Dr. Jeckyl and Mr. Hyde.

He is GREAT at coaching the players. He puts together one hell of an offensive scheme. But his offensive play-calling seems to go from genius to WTF YOU MORON?!?!?

Memo to Clark Hunt.....Hire someone to stand next to Andy Reid during games and just whisper in his ear....REMEMBER THE RUNNING GAME!

Maybe you could give that person the title of "coordinator of the offense," or something similar.

Too bad we don't have someone who could "coordinate the offense" on the coaching staff already ...

we really should've win this one, there are a lot of things that i want to say but my english doesn't help to express myself properly hahahahahah i'll try though

1- that spot of the ball that Reid challenged was totally bull****, Kaep was about 1 yard of the first down

2- there was a 4th and 1 that we should go on for, just before the 9ers did to as, i mean we punt it on the 42 i think and it was touchback, so we punt it just for 20 yards? well that doens't work to me. And the other team just make the exact same thing in ther next serie

3- Andy Reid playcalling is beeing really bad when our team is down on the score, it is like he panics.

4- Kelce and DAT, i just love them. Just sain

Im dissapointed by the score not by the team. I really hope we come back from the bye week with a win over SD

Cheers from the beauty land here in south america

Hey... Anybody want to fill me in on something, that I must be missing...?

The "twelve men" penalty, on the FG attempt.... Had the Niners snapped the ball, and I just didn't see it? Or is there something in the rules that I missed? Because, it looked to me as if one of our players was calling a TO, and the play never started (no snap). Thus, twelve men on the field should not have been called.

What did I miss there?

Hey 31 it's been a while

I think that was a rule change this past offseason when the ball is about to be snapped they throw the flag for 12 man if they see it

I'll have to watch the replay again...but now that you mention it, it did seem to take a long time before the penalty was called. Still doesn't excuse the fact that Taub shouldn't have caught the extra man, and that we should never have been behind at that point anyway.

The refs seemed to be 49'ers fans last sunday. Another irritating one was the spot when Kap ran out of bounds clearly before the first down marker, and they gave it to him anyway.

What mathew said is true. The refs call it before the snap. Once they see the ball is about to be snapped the will throw the flag. They dont wait till its snapped. Its to prevent a injury on a dead play.

So they are actually supposed to call the penalty before it happens? That seems so bizarre. Especially when the penalized team was calling for a timeout before the snap.... the snap that never happened.

Not that it affected the game in any real way. I was amazed that there can be a penalty before the penalty is actually committed.

Yes sad but true. Now the question is how imminent was the ball about to be snapped with the calling lf the time out. Its a judgement call on when the refs think how close the ball is about to be snapped. They could have thrown it to soon amd chose to ignore the timeout call as well. But yes its called before the snap.

That sucks! Too many men on the field should not be called until the ball is snapped. STUPID new rule. ESPECIALLY should not be called when the team with too many men on the field is trying to call timeout. The loss of a timeout is penalty enough for what amounts to a simple bit of confusion. STUPID ZEBRAS!!!!!!!
