ESPN Game Preview (http://scores.espn.go.com/nfl/nflpreview?gameId=400554227)

After cooling off one of the NFL's hottest teams, the Kansas City Chiefs are moving forward with confidence.

The Chiefs look to continue their dominance over a St. Louis Rams team that's coming off an impressive victory of its own Sunday at Arrowhead Stadium.

Two weeks removed from a frustrating five-point loss at San Francisco that dropped its record below .500, Kansas City (3-3) snapped San Diego's five-game winning streak with a 23-20 road victory last Sunday. Rookie Cairo Santos' wobbly 48-yard field goal with 21 seconds left capped a nine-play, 62-yard drive and helped the Chiefs remain a threat in the AFC West.

"I think this team is in a good place mentally," said quarterback Alex Smith, who has thrown eight touchdowns and one interception in the last four games.

"This was an opportunity for us to kind of show what we're made of, show the country. I feel like we're in a good place and we'll keep going."

That's the plan for the Chiefs, who were outscored 50-27 while opening with consecutive losses to Tennessee and Denver. Since, Kansas City has averaged 28.8 points and not allowed more than 22 in a game while winning three of four.

While the Chiefs' offense has committed one turnover in three games, the defense continued to progress after holding a Chargers team that entered averaging 285.5 passing yards to a season-low 182.

"That's the game of football," Smith said. "You have to trust the guy next to you. We talk about it all the time -- offensively, defensively, the guy next to you in the huddle -- you have to trust all those guys to do their job. And you have to trust that you're going to do yours."

That trust has coach Andy Reid feeling cautiously optimistic about his group.

"The great part about this is we still have a ton of room to improve," said Reid, who improved to 14-2 in games immediately following the bye week. "I think overall the whole picture is good."

It could get better if the Chiefs can take advantage of a two-game home stretch against St. Louis (2-4) and the one-win New York Jets.

Kansas City has won the last five meetings against the Rams by an average of 19.0 points but hasn't faced them since a 27-13 victory at St. Louis in 2010.

Reid, meanwhile, won't take anything for granted after St. Louis showed some creativity during last Sunday's 28-26 victory over Seattle.

"We've got a heck of a football team coming in here this week," Reid said. "(Coach) Jeff (Fisher) has done a nice job with the Rams. They are playing at a very high level, they're fast, they're aggressive. We've got to make sure that we get ourselves ready."

St. Louis allowed Russell Wilson to become the first NFL quarterback to pass for at least 300 yards and rush for 100 and was outgained 463 to 272 overall, but benefited from a pair of key special teams plays.

Stedman Bailey returned a punt 90 yards for a touchdown in the second quarter. As the ball was in the air, teammate Tavon Austin faked out the Seahawks by staggering then tumbling while preparing to make a phantom catch on the opposite sideline.

Then with 2:55 remaining in the game while ahead by two and facing a fourth-and-3 from their own 18, the Rams executed a perfect fake punt when punter Johnny Hekker hit Benny Cunningham with an 18-yard pass.

"If you have the reputation that you're fearless from the standpoint of making those calls, you're going to be able to dictate some things," said Fisher, the mastermind behind Tennessee's famed Music City Miracle. "That's what we try to do."

Through more conventional means, Tre Mason could find himself as the Rams featured back after rushing for 85 yards and a TD on 18 carries in his second NFL game last weekend.

The Chiefs held San Diego to 69 yards rushing after San Francisco ran for 171 against them two weeks earlier. Kansas City, however, has not held an opponent to fewer than 100 rushing yards in consecutive games this season.

Chiefs star Jamaal Charles gained 95 yards against the Chargers to pass Priest Holmes for the top spot on the team's rushing list with 6,113.

He passed a battery of tests and does not show symptoms of a concussion, the Chiefs said Wednesday -- one day after the star running back told a radio show he saw "light bulbs" after a hit against San Diego.

Averaging 4.9 yards per carry in the last three games, Charles ran for 126 and a TD on 11 carries at St. Louis in 2010.

The Rams' run defense ranks 28th in both yards (145.0 per game) and yards per attempt (4.8).

Scouting Report from the Kansas City Star (http://www.kansascity.com/sports/nfl/kansas-city-chiefs/article3373619.html)

When the Chiefs run

EDGE >> CHIEFS

This is where the Chiefs can make some hay, though it won’t be easy. Jamaal Charles looked as quick as he has all season last week, while Knile Davis has emerged as a strong No. 2 option. He has only rushed 12 times for 31 yards the last two games, so he is due for a breakout. The Rams feature one of the league’s worst perimeter run defenses, so there could be holes for everybody, including quarterback Alex Smith and running back De’Anthony Thomas.

When the Chiefs pass

EDGE >> RAMS

The Rams’ defensive front hasn’t been as fearsome as some predicted, but it’s still a formidable group. Defensive end Robert Quinn (http://www.stlouisrams.com/videos/videos/Top-100-Players-of-2014-Robert-Quinn/7ab4309f-4315-4a31-8eb4-bd455194ea7f)is an elite pass rusher, while first-round pick Aaron Donald has lived up to the hype as a disruptive tackle. Former Missouri star E.J. Gaines has earned a role in a secondary that might be without its best cornerback, Janoris Jenkins, due to a knee injury. The Chiefs have managed to move the ball well through the air despite a lack of explosive options at receiver, but the Rams will make it difficult.

When the Rams run

EDGE >> CHIEFS

This one could be a push. The Rams feature three interesting running backs in Zac Stacy, Benjamin Cunningham and Tre Mason, and they like to deploy the hot hand. However, the Chiefs’ run defense has been surprisingly solid after the loss of inside linebacker Derrick Johnson and defensive end Mike DeVito, and there’s no reason to think it will suddenly fall off now.

When the Rams pass

EDGE >> CHIEFS

Many speculated that the Rams were in deep trouble when starting quarterback Sam Bradford went down with a season-ending injury, but quarterback Austin Davis has been surprisingly solid in his stead. The Chiefs haven’t forced many interceptions, but they do feature a strong pass rush led by outside linebackers Tamba Hali and Justin Houston. Expect them to get after Davis.

Special teams

EDGE >> RAMS

The Rams’ special teams played a big role (http://www.kansascity.com/sports/nfl/kansas-city-chiefs/article3357977.html) in their upset victory over Seattle last week. Meanwhile, the Chiefs’ special teams have left a bit to be desired at times. Kicker Cairo Santos has made his last six field goals and punter Dustin Colquitt has been his usual solid self, but the Chiefs’ return game has yet to get anything going.

Coaching

EDGE >> RAMS

Chiefs coach Andy Reid and Rams coach Jeff Fisher are among the most respected coaches in the game, but for whatever reason, Fisher has had Reid’s number. The man whose players effectionately call “Big Red” is 0-4 in his career against Fisher.

X-factor

EDGE >> CHIEFS

Sunday is going to be a huge sports day for Kansas City. Game 5 of the World Series begins at 7 p.m., so expect Chiefs fans to start the party early. Arrowhead Stadium will be rocking for this crucial game.

Bottom line: Chiefs 27-17

Reid’s losing streak against Fisher should come to an end this week. The Rams are well-coached and tough, in the image of their coach, but the Chiefs are the better team and they have home-field advantage.

A pass happy playbook in todays NFL isn't horrible if you have a WR core that can handle it the Chiefs are not even close to having that WR core. That's why it's so frustrating to see the pass happy playbook come out

The Chiefs get stopped early running a lot but as the game goes on they start to get more and more on the carries. The running game is something that pays off if you stick with it.

If we play this drive correctly (i.e. Run the ball), the Rams shouldn't have any time left on the clock when they get the ball back.

We are having a hard time running the ball on 10 carries we only have 14 total yards, if Smith keeps completing passes the run will open up, he has completed 14 straight passes after missing the first one.

The one thing that has pleasantly surprised me is that the only thing that has held us back is play calling. I think we could easily have 5 or 6 wins so far if we ran the ball more.

That having been said, our passing game is improving every week. We won on A. smith's arm this week. Even though JC and KD have all the TDs, we drove down using the passing game efficiently. Bowe showed up, DAT got the ball a little, and they used Kelce and Sherman.

If we keep this up, I see us being very dangerous and getting into the playoffs as a wildcard (I don't see us catching Denver, because I don't see them losing more than 2 games over the rest of the season).

But Im having fun with some on the Geno fans elsewhere its so much fun using there own words against them LOL

Pioli didn't understand you even needed O-line until his $60 mil QB started getting hurt.

Fulton's doing well, all things considered. Today the O-line didn't do great, but when they needed to they opened up rushing lanes. Fisher struggled against #94, but showed some moxie when the Rams decided to play the game of "let's keep trying to stop the RB after the whistle blows..."

A MOST EXCELLENT COMMENT SIR!!!! I am from the days when the run was used to open up the passing game, but there is no doubt that the passing game can be used to open up the running game. This applies ESPECIALLY to the short passing game that Alex Smith excels at! It's a tricky thing with Andy Reid calling the plays but it most certainly can work.

And that is exactly what happened in the game, Rams started dropping back in coverage and got out of 8 or 9 out of the box to stop the run, to cover the pass and the run opened up. If something is not working, be it pass or run, why stick with it? Do what the other team is giving you until the other team changes defense scheme to stop what is working?

I just watched that play where Dee Ford got in his first NFL sack. The Rams Tackle that he jacked up on that play was his own college teammate last year -- Greg Robinson, taken #2 overall in this past draft.
