Against the Chiefs, the Raiders led 7-6 late in the third quarter. Then came a flood of mistakes.
Center Jeremy Newberry botched a snap on a third-down play in which he failed to realize quarterback Daunte Culpepper was in the shotgun formation. End of drive. Defensive end Derrick Burgess jumped offside on third-and-10 at the Raiders' 16-yard line. The Chiefs converted the third-and-five play into a first down with an 8-yard pass and scored a touchdown three plays later. Fullback Justin Griffith's holding penalty on first-and-10 from the Chiefs' 19 helped force the Raiders to settle for a field goal.
"You don't win when you make those mistakes that time of the game," Kiffin said. "Those aren't mistakes you make in the first quarter, so if you want to be a great team, you have to go to your fundamentals and you have to be consistent and you have to play in the fourth quarter the way you do in the first quarter."
