Game Preview from ESPN.com (http://espn.go.com/nfl/preview?gameId=400791488):

The fourth game of the season brought opposite feelings for the Chicago Bears (http://espn.go.com/nfl/team/_/name/chi/chicago-bears)and Kansas City Chiefs (http://espn.go.com/nfl/team/_/name/kc/kansas-city-chiefs).
Panic started to settle in for the Chiefs, who have lost three straight after a season-opening win. Relief finally came for the Bears, who avoided setting the longest losing streak in franchise history.

Kansas City will try to keep the sky from falling Sunday against a Chicago team looking for its first road win since last October.

The Bears (1-3) didn't have any victories since November until a 22-20 win over Oakland last Sunday. It was the first win in the John Fox era, and he was happy to see his players enjoy it after getting outscored 74-23 in their previous two games.

"I was really happy to see smiles in there," Fox said. "I'm really happy for our fans because we haven't exactly lit it up here at home in the first two opportunities."

After snapping a team-record-tying eight-game losing streak, Chicago will now try to end a five-game skid on the road. The Bears lost 26-0 to Seattle in their only game away from home this season in Week 3.

In place of the injured Jay Cutler (http://espn.go.com/nfl/player/_/id/9597/jay-cutler), backup Jimmy Clausen (http://espn.go.com/nfl/player/_/id/13198/jimmy-clausen) failed to move the offense against the Seahawks. Cutler returned against the Raiders and finished 28 of 43 for 281 yards and a pair of touchdowns with an interception.

Cutler threw another fourth-quarter pick, his second in two full games and third overall, but he completed 5 of 8 passes for 41 yards during a game-winning drive that ended with Robbie Gould (http://espn.go.com/nfl/player/_/id/9354/robbie-gould)'s 49-yard field goal with 2 seconds left.

Cutler returned from a hamstring injury suffered during a 48-23 loss to Arizona on Sept. 20, and top receiver Alshon Jeffery (http://espn.go.com/nfl/player/_/id/14912/alshon-jeffery) hopes to return this week from the same injury that has kept him out three games.

The question now is the health of the offensive line, which lost center Will Montgomery (http://espn.go.com/nfl/player/_/id/9820/will-montgomery) for the season when he broke his left leg early against the Raiders. The Bears, already without tackle Jermon Bushrod (http://espn.go.com/nfl/player/_/id/10568/jermon-bushrod) (concussion/shoulder), shifted Matt Slauson (http://espn.go.com/nfl/player/_/id/12728/matt-slauson) from guard to center and moved the newly acquired Patrick Omameh (http://espn.go.com/nfl/player/_/id/16327/patrick-omameh) into Slauson's regular spot.

"It happens at a lot of positions in a lot of football games in the National Football League," Fox said. "All your backups have to be ready to play in a moment's notice, particularly in the O-line because it is such a group dynamic."

The offensive line was one of several problems for the Chiefs in their latest ugly loss. Kansas City (1-3) allowed five sacks during a 36-21 loss at Cincinnati, upping its NFL-leading total to 19. The Bears have just six sacks.

After committing five turnovers and fumbling away a 31-24 home loss to Denver on Sept. 17, the Chiefs surrendered 893 yards combined in a 38-28 defeat in Green Bay and last week against the Bengals -- a statistic they ranked seventh-best in the NFL in last year.

Cincinnati's Andy Dalton (http://espn.go.com/nfl/player/_/id/14012/andy-dalton) threw for 321 yards last week as Jeremy Hill (http://espn.go.com/nfl/player/_/id/16803/jeremy-hill) andGiovani Bernard (http://espn.go.com/nfl/player/_/id/15826/giovani-bernard) combined for four rushing touchdowns.

The Chiefs have allowed 30 points or more in three straight games for the first time since the final game of the 2010 season and the first two of 2011. Coach Andy Reid hardly spoke with the media following the loss in Green Bay, but he seemed more optimistic Monday.

"I had a chance to talk to them on the plane ride back, and they take accountability for things, too," Reid said. "It's one of the reasons I like this team. We have a bunch of young guys. We just have to eliminate some stuff. If we do, we can be a pretty good football team."

Kansas City has an opportunity to improve its record during a stretch of three of four games at home prior to its bye week. After Chicago, the Chiefs head on the road to play 2-2 Minnesota before hosting a Pittsburgh team that will likely still be without Ben Roethlisberger (http://espn.go.com/nfl/player/_/id/5536/ben-roethlisberger) and winless Detroit.

Chicago plays in Detroit and, after its bye, hosts the Vikings. The Bears then face a challenging stretch against San Diego, St. Louis, Denver and Green Bay.

When the Chiefs run

EDGE >> CHIEFS
The Bears have been young up the middle without nose tackle Jeremiah Ratliff, who said he will play this week (http://chicago.suntimes.com/bears-football/7/71/1020058/bears-dl-jeremiah-ratliff-ill-play-sunday) after dealing with an ankle injury and serving a three-game suspension. The return of Ratliff (6-4, 303) and the continued improvement of talented rookie second-round pick Eddie Goldman (6-4, 336) will help a unit that has some questions at inside linebacker, where the Bears’ starters are either young (second-year pro Christian Jones) or fairly inexperienced at the position (Shea McClellin). McClellin (6-3, 245) is a former outside linebacker and defensive end who is calling defensive plays for the first time (http://chicago.suntimes.com/sports/7/71/885179/shea-mcclellin-feels-comfortable-calling-plays-linebacker) in his four-year career and and leads the team in tackles with 37. That said, Chiefs might be wise to test the interior of the Bears’ defense by giving some early carries to star running back Jamaal Charles, who is as explosive as ever.

When the Chiefs pass

EDGE >> CHIEFS
After years as a 4-3 team, the Bears are adjusting to a new 3-4 defense under head coach John Fox. The Bears signed former Baltimore outside linebacker Pernell McPhee (6-3, 275) to lead the transition. He uses his size, power and technique to win at the point and is good vs. the run and pass. He has six quarterback pressures, two sacks and an interception. He will line up on both sides of the formation, but defensive end Jarvis Jenkins (6-4, 315) actually leads the team in sacks with three. He’s got enough power to push the pocket. Safety Antrel Rolle (6-0, 206) is the leader of the secondary; he is tough, experienced and is a Super Bowl champion. He is also doubtful with an ankle injury. If he can’t play, the Bears could start rookie Harold Jones-Quartey next to another rookie safety, Adrian Amos. The Chiefs could exploit that, especially with Alex Smith and Jeremy Maclin finding a groove the last two weeks. Speaking of Maclin, he could see plenty of cornerback Tracy Porter (5-11, 190), who shadowed Raiders rookie Amari Cooper and limited him to 49 yards on four catches a week ago. The Chiefs could also have some success throwing to their backs and tight ends, as the Bears’ linebackers occasionally struggled to tackle in space against the Raiders.

When the Bears run

EDGE >> BEARS
Running back Matt Forte (http://www.nfl.com/videos/nfl-top100-2015/0ap3000000496420/Top-100-Players-of-2015-No-48-Matt-Forte) (6-2, 218) is a shifty, tough and versatile workhorse who has earned the Chiefs’ respect (http://www.kansascity.com/sports/nfl/kansas-city-chiefs/article38238783.html). He rushed for over 1,000 yards last year and set the NFL single-season record for most receptions by a running back (102). The Bears are not throwing it to him as much this year but he makes the offense go. The Bears will even use a little Wildcat with him here and there. This is a team that will line up in power sets and run the ball at you — the line provides a little push, too — so the Chiefs’ defensive front will need to match their physicality. Nose tackle Jaye Howard (6-3, 301) is in the midst of a career year; he leads the team with four tackles for loss and also has 23 tackles, the second most on the team. That’s absurd for an interior lineman. The Bears’ starting center, Will Montgomery, is out for the season with an injury, and his replacement, rookie Hroniss Grasu (6-3, 297), is set to make his first career start (http://espn.go.com/blog/chicago-bears/post/_/id/4700316/center-hroniss-grasu-moves-closer-to-making-first-career-nfl-start). Grasu, a third-round pick, was highly thought of coming out of college because of his smarts, toughness and collegiate production, but Howard needs to take advantage of this matchup. It will be interesting to see if the Bears, who seem to prefer two-tight looks, will mimic the Packers and Bengals and try to use three-wide personnel to run on the Chiefs’ nickel subpackage, which has been leaky against the run.

When the Bears pass

EDGE >> CHIEFS
Jay Cutler (6-3, 220) was back last week after missing the Bears’ week three game against Seattle with a hamstring injury. He led the Bears to their first touchdown in seven quarters last week and threw for nearly 300 yards. Cutler has outstanding arm talent but his accuracy wavers at times and he has a reputation for turning the ball over under pressure. He also throws with a low trajectory, which leads to tipped passes at the line of scrimmage. Tight end Martellus Bennett (6-6, 273) is a big, athletic target who is in the midst of a career season. He is Cutler’s security blanket, along with Forte. Alshon Jeffery (6-3, 216) and Eddie Royal (5-10, 185) are good receivers, but they’ve been injured recently. Royal, a former San Diego Charger, has hurt the Chiefs with his quickness in the past. Third-year pro Marquess Wilson (6-4, 199) is a big receiver who has also emerged as a bit of a revelation. Left tackle Jermon Bushrod (concussion) cannot play, so Tamba Hali needs to go at his replacement, Charles Leno, Jr. (6-3, 302). The Bears surrendered some pressure off the edge against the Raiders, so the Chiefs need to try to duplicate that.

Special teams

EDGE >> CHIEFS
Kicker Robbie Gould had an extra point blocked last week, but is a perfect 9-for-9 on field goals. He also made the game-winner against the Raiders. The Chiefs’ Cairo Santos is perfect on extra points and 10-for-11 on the field goals, but he gets the slight edge this week because he boasts a superior touchback percentage. Chiefs punter Dustin Colquitt has the edge over Pat O’Donnell on punts inside the 20, and the Chiefs’ coverage units have a big edge, as kick returner Knile Davis and punt return De’Anthony Thomas should have room to work. The Bears have surrendered two kick returns for touchdowns.

Coaching

EDGE >> BEARS
Bears coach John Fox is 5-4 all-time against Chiefs coach Andy Reid. Reid has the edge in career winning percentage (.583 to .566), but Fox has the edge in Super Bowl appearances (two to Reid’s one). Offensive coordinator Adam Gase guided a prolific offense under Fox in Denver from 2013 to 2014, while defensive coordinator Vic Fangio is one of the best in the business — his defenses in San Francisco from 2011 to 2014 were tough, physical, well-coached and aggressive. Meanwhile, the Chiefs’ 1-3 start has rightfully opened the playcalling on both sides of the ball to criticism.

X-factor

EDGE >> CHIEFS
While the Bears recently dealt Jared Allen and Jon Bostic, two solid contributors, to accelerate their rebuild, the Chiefs’ season hangs in the balance here. Whatever playoff hopes they harbored before the season could go up in smoke with their fourth straight loss. The Royals play Game 3 of the American League Division Series on Sunday, but that game doesn’t start until 3 p.m. central, and the Chiefs game should be over by then. Nevertheless, it will be particularly interesting to see what kind of crowd this game attracts.

Bottom line: Chiefs 30-16

The Chiefs’ last three opponents are a combined 12-0, so there’s a pretty good chance the Chiefs aren’t as bad as their record. And while it must be considered a disappointment that they did not compete better against the league’s best, though doesn’t mean the season is already a wash. The Bears are coming off their first win of the season, but expect the Chiefs to get back on the right track here and set up a big road test against a frisky Minnesota team next week.

Many of you know that the Bears are my favorite team and the only time I ever root against the Chiefs is that one game every four years when they play each other.

Well, not today.

It's clear that the Bears are not going anywhere this year. They have already started trading away whoever they can for whatever draft pick another team is willing to part with. The best thing the Bears can do is lose every game and make sure that those picks are as high as possible. On the other hand, I believe that the Chiefs still have a chance of making the playoffs this year despite their slow start. But I would like to see both teams play better and give us a good game to watch. So today I'm rooting for the Bears to cover the point spread (-9) but I'm rooting for the Chiefs to win.

Go Chiefs!

I'm hoping Nelson is up to the challenge. I've wondering about him, since we haven't seen him in uniform since the regular season began. The Chiefs desperately need him to become a viable slot CB, because if he doesn't, then the Defense is never going to be very good this year.

Not sure why, but I hope they start running the ball a bit more in the 2nd half and get JC rolling, because I really believe the O-Line is really getting weary of the pass-happy play calling that is always keeping them on their heels. There has already been 20+ pass plays called as opposed to only 8 rushing plays and that's not good balance.

Word is that Knile Davis isn't 100% and that's why we aren't seeing him.

Paylor says team confirms its a knee injury and is done for the game, west is the only running back we have then

Defense buckled but didn't break. Unless the Bears kick 7 FGs we should be okay.

Davis can play if he has to, but I hope West can carry the load today and Davis can be ready to go full-tilt next week, because JC isn't going to be there, I suspect.

Yeah this injury looks bad, here's hoping he didn't blow out a knee or his career may be in trouble, cause that would be what 2-3 injuries to his legs

Another good punt, but I wish we weren't punting so much.

Not sure if Smith is overly nervy and hesitant or if this offensive line is just pathetic, probably a bit of both.

What the hell else can go wrong? Reid will go 100% pass-happy if Charles is lost for the season.

Seems like even when there is reasonably good pass-protection, the passing game is still anemic and ineffective.

Hope you are wrong. I doubt an 11 point lead will hold up. We MUST get more points.

And with an 0-5 record record against the Donkeys (soon to be 0-6) with Alex at the helm, it's becoming apparent that we need a challenger to #11, because we just aren't seeing enough of what we saw in the Indy playoff game.

Bad News Guys

The immediate fear is that #Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles tore his ACL, source says, based on initial tests. He'll have an MRI to learn more.
