Game Preview from ESPN.com (http://espn.go.com/nfl/preview?gameId=400791625):

Without star Jamaal Charles (http://espn.go.com/nfl/player/_/id/11307/jamaal-charles), the Kansas City Chiefs (http://espn.go.com/nfl/team/_/name/kc/kansas-city-chiefs) must find a way to prevent their season from completely spiraling out of control.

They'll look to avoid a fifth straight defeat Sunday against a Minnesota Vikings (http://espn.go.com/nfl/team/_/name/min/minnesota-vikings) team that's trying to continue its recent success at home.

Charles' season ended in the third quarter last Sunday when he tore the ACL in his right knee while making a cut. The four-time Pro Bowler averaged 5.1 yards per carry while rushing for 364 and caught 21 passes for 177 this season. His five touchdowns have accounted for half of the Chiefs' offensive total.

"It brought tears to my eyes. It's heartbreaking," teammate Charcandrick West (http://espn.go.com/nfl/player/_/id/17284/charcandrick-west) said of seeing Charles go down.

Kansas City (1-4) led 17-3 against Chicago when Charles was hurt, but fell 18-17. While the Chiefs face a difficult challenge the rest of the season without their main offensive threat, the immediate task is to avoid losing five in a row for the first time since 2012's 2-14 season.

"You know you're not going to replace Jamaal," coach Andy Reid said. "He's one of the best. Really, when it's all said and done, one of the best in the history of the game.

"We all need to pick it, right now. Raise the level."

Second-year back West and Knile Davis (http://espn.go.com/nfl/player/_/id/15832/knile-davis) are expected to share the majority of the backfield duties while versatile receiver De'Anthony Thomas (http://espn.go.com/nfl/player/_/id/16945/de'anthony-thomas) also could receive some carries. Davis topped 100 rushing yards in back-to-back games last season but has 11 attempts for 27 and a TD in 2015. All of West's 48 career yards on 12 carries came in the last two weeks.

"They told us, me and Knile, that we're both going to play. We both have to be ready to step up," West said. "We knew our big brother went down, so it's time to step up."

Replacing Charles isn't the only problem facing a Kansas City offense that's scored one TD in the last two weeks.

Alex Smith (http://espn.go.com/nfl/player/_/id/8416/alex-smith) was 16 of 30 for a season-low 181 yards and recorded that lone touchdown pass to Thomas last Sunday. He also was sacked three times to raise his total to 21 -- second most in the NFL.

"It's not fun to be out there playing like that. We know we're so much better than that," Smith said.

A defense that allowed at least 31 points in the previous three weeks was stout until the Bears scored touchdowns on their final two drives.

"For me, there are two choices: I mean, yeah, you can let this get to you," Smith added. "We have a lot of football left. You can get sidetracked, you can get distracted, you can make excuses. Or we can all look internally, we can all stay together and we can fight."

The fight continues at Minnesota, where the Vikings (2-2) come out of their bye week looking for a sixth consecutive home victory. Both of their wins this season have come at TCF Bank Stadium, and they've had an extra week to regroup from falling 23-20 at Denver on Oct. 4.

Adrian Peterson (http://espn.go.com/nfl/player/_/id/10452/adrian-peterson) ran for 81 yards and a TD on 16 carries, Mike Wallace (http://espn.go.com/nfl/player/_/id/12601/mike-wallace) set season highs with eight receptions for 83 yards and the Vikings picked offPeyton Manning (http://espn.go.com/nfl/player/_/id/1428/peyton-manning) twice, but Teddy Bridgewater (http://espn.go.com/nfl/player/_/id/16728/teddy-bridgewater) was sacked seven times and lost a fumble on the final one with 35 seconds remaining.

"We still have room to grow," said Peterson, second in the league with 93.0 rushing yards per game. "I look back and there were some missed opportunities that you can't have back. A lot to look back on. I feel like we're OK. We'll be good."

Minnesota's defense has been solid while ranking sixth in points allowed (18.3), yielding a total of 30 in home wins over Detroit and San Diego.

The Vikings will head into this one with a different man in the middle of the defense, though. Minnesota traded starting middle linebacker Gerald Hodges (http://espn.go.com/nfl/player/_/id/15977/gerald-hodges) to San Francisco last week for backup center Nick Easton and a sixth-round draft choice. The development of rookie linebacker Eric Kendricks (http://espn.go.com/nfl/player/_/id/2510863/eric-kendricks) made Hodges expendable.

"Sometimes these are difficult decisions, but when you have depth and youth at a position, and you can make a move from a business perspective on getting your team better when you have extra pieces to move," general manager Rick Spielman said. "I think you always have to look at those."

The Vikings might need to utilize their depth at receiver. Charles Johnson (http://espn.go.com/nfl/player/_/id/10527/charles-johnson)(ribs) is listed as questionable while Wallace (knee), who leads the team with 20 catches, and Jarius Wright (http://espn.go.com/nfl/player/_/id/14918/jarius-wright) (hand) are probable.

No other Minnesota wideout has more than eight receptions.

Kansas City has won the last two meetings with the Vikings, most recently 22-17 on Oct. 2, 2011.

Scouting Report from the Kansas City Star (http://www.kansascity.com/sports/nfl/kansas-city-chiefs/article39597939.html):

BY TEREZ A. PAYLOR
tpaylor@kcstar.com
(tpaylor@kcstar.com)
When the Chiefs run

EDGE >> VIKINGS
With Jamaal Charles out for the season, the Chiefs could divvy up the work between Charcandrick West and Knile Davis, with former practice squad player Spencer Ware being a wildcard. With Charles out, they might try to pound the ball like they did during a three-game stretch last year when Charles was nicked up. The Vikings, who run a 4-3 front, are starting a promising rookie at inside linebacker in Eric Kendricks (6-0, 232), who Minnesota liked enough to deal away their starter at the position, Gerald Hodges, to San Francisco a week ago. Kendricks and versatile, athletic outside linebacker Anthony Barr (6-5, 255) will eventually form a very strong duo at the second level. The Vikings have a stout duo at defensive tackle in Sharrif Floyd (6-3, 311) and Linval Joseph (6-4, 329), who are solid against the run.

When the Chiefs pass

EDGE >>CHIEFS
The Chiefs have surrendered a league-high 22 sacks, while the Vikings ranks 24th in sacks with eight. The offensive line has shown improvement but remains vulnerable on stunts and blitz pickup, and without Charles, it will be interesting to see if teams are more daring when it comes to blitzing Alex Smith, whose accuracy was uneven in an 18-17 loss to the Bears last week. One guy they need to block is defensive end Everson Griffen (6-3, 273), who has three sacks. The Vikings draw up some creative blitz packages and also are not shy about bringing pressure up the middle, so the Chiefs need to be prepared to counter that with quick passes. Safety Harrison Smith (6-2, 214) is someone to be wary off; he’s smart and tough and one of the game’s very best two-way safeties. But they might be wise to pick on cornerback Xavier Rhodes (6-1, 217), who has been flagged (http://espn.go.com/blog/minnesota-vikings/post/_/id/15795/to-curb-penalties-vikings-have-xavier-rhodes-practice-with-boxing-gloves) for seven penalties in the first four games of the season.

When the Vikings pass

EDGE >> CHIEFS
Second-year quarterback Teddy Bridgewater (6-2, 215) does not have elite arm talent, but he’s smart and poised. He generally throws short-to-intermediate passes and is most comfortable throwing in rhythm. He is generally accurate on such passes, and the Vikings do a nice job of creating quick, easy throws for him through formations and motions. Bridgewater’s favorite target is speedy deep threat Mike Wallace (6-0, 205), but the deep ball is not Bridgewater’s game; his accuracy wavers downfield. The Vikings’ offensive line also struggles in pass protection, as they are vulnerable on blitzes and stunts. The Vikings have surrendered 13 sacks, which ranks 21st in the league, while the Chiefs rank 13th in sacks with 11. They are also vulnerable on the edges, which means Justin Houston, Tamba Hali (if he plays (http://www.kansascity.com/sports/nfl/kansas-city-chiefs/article39547350.html)) and Dee Ford need to take advantage of their matchups. That especially applies to Houston, who is facing a fourth-round rookie in T.J. Clemmings (6-5, 309) who has talent but is raw, technically. If the Chiefs can somehow get out to a decisive early lead, it could spell trouble for the Vikings.

Special teams

EDGE >> VIKINGS
The Chiefs’ Cairo Santos has converted 11 of 14 field goals (including a ludicrous 66-yard attempt, which he missed) while the Vikings’ Blair Walsh is 6 of 8. Walsh, unlike Santos, has missed an extra point, and the touchback percentage is even. The Chiefs’ Dustin Colquitt has dropped 11 punts inside the 20, compared to 9 for Jeff Locke, who has the edge in fair catches (9 to 4). The Vikings have higher kick- and punt-return averages, and while the Chiefs do a better job of covering kicks, the Vikings do better covering punts. It’s close, but the Vikings have the edge.

Coaching

EDGE >> CHIEFS
Vikings coach Mike Zimmer is in his second year on the job. He impressed people with the job he did last year, guiding the Vikings to a competitive 7-9 record despite missing their best player (Peterson) and starting a rookie quarterback. George Edwards is the Vikings’ defensive coordinator, but Zimmer is a respected defensive mind who is instilling physicality and toughness in his team. Meanwhile, offensive coordinator Norv Turner is one of the league’s best who does an outstanding job of taking advantage of Bridgewater’s talents. So the Vikings’ staff is solid, but at the top, Reid has an experienced edge on Zimmer.

X-factor

EDGE >> VIKINGS
One of the hardest things to do in the NFL is rally back from an early hole. When things go south for you in this league, it’s difficult to pull together and get everybody back in the same page — especially without your best player. That, plus the fact the Vikings are at home and coming off a bye week, is more than enough to put the Chiefs’ backs against the wall this week.

Bottom line: Vikings 23-20

To be clear, a victory certainly isn’t out of the question for the Chiefs, who match up well with the Vikings on paper, even without Charles. This isn’t a 1-4 team, talent-wise, so if they’re mentally tough (http://www.kansascity.com/sports/nfl/kansas-city-chiefs/article38966583.html), they’ll keep it close and/or surprise people this week. And if they can get an early lead, they absolutely could put themselves in position to close the game out by teeing off on the Vikings’ middling passing game. But after the Chiefs’ loss to a struggling Chicago team, you just can’t pick them to win this week, even though the Vikings have a less-than-flattering loss on their schedule to San Francisco.

I keep hearing the announcers saying "Donald Stephenson missing his block". I hope they don't resign him after this season & they do draft a Tackle with their 1st pick.

Remember all that BS about "Fisher lost his LT job to Stephenson"? We are seeing the proof that it was false.

^^Matt, don't you think it's time to move Fisher back to LT and send Stephenson to the bench? Stephenson not only misses that block but causes the fumble. Two weeks in a row, Stephenson has whiffed horrendously on blocks that ended up costing this team dearly in the games against the Bears and Vikings.

Eric Fisher was NOWHERE close to being this horrific at this point in the season last year playing LT in 2014, as what Stephenson has been thus far this year
