Game Preview from ESPN.com (http://espn.go.com/nfl/preview?gameId=400791655):

The Kansas City Chiefs appeared to be in promising shape for a playoff berth last season after reeling off five consecutive wins, but a road loss to the Oakland Raiders began a slump that ultimately pushed them out of the postseason.

The Chiefs are again heading to Oakland having won five in a row and might have a depleted lineup in their attempt at a different result Sunday.

Kansas City started 7-3 in 2014 and was tied for the AFC West lead with Denver until a 24-20 defeat to the Raiders. The Chiefs would drop their next two games and lose four of their final six to finish one game behind Baltimore for the last playoff spot.

Kansas City is currently three games behind Denver after rebounding from a 1-5 start and has a slim lead on a postseason berth. The Chiefs are in the first wild-card spot but are among five teams that are 6-5.

Oakland and Buffalo are just behind that group at 5-6.

Kansas City held on to its position with a 30-22 win over the Bills last Sunday despite losing a number of players, especially on the offensive line. Left guard Jeff Allen played through an ankle injury to keep coach Andy Reid from having to use a tight end or defensive lineman in a pinch.

The Chiefs lost left tackle Eric Fisher (neck) and center Mitch Morse (concussion). The biggest loss, though, arguably came on the other side of the ball with top pass rusher Justin Houston reportedly hyperextending his knee.

Houston was originally feared to have a strained knee ligament, which could have kept him out for multiple weeks. His status still remains unclear for this week, and Dee Ford could take his place if he can return from an ailing back that's kept him out the past two games.

Ford, Fisher and running back Charcandrick West (hamstring) were reportedly practicing earlier this week. Defensive end Allen Bailey, out since Week 8 because of a calf injury, was also on the field.

With West out last week, Spencer Ware had 114 yards and a touchdown in his first NFL start. West became the starter following Jamaal Charles' season-ending knee injury Oct. 11.

"That's one thing I like about my team. We find a way to persevere," Ware said. "With Jamaal going down and then Charcandrick going down, our whole team is filled with people that prepare like they are the guy, so when the time comes they're able to step in. And that's what we do."

With their lineup in flux, the Chiefs will seek a fourth win in five matchups against the Raiders, but this Oakland team doesn't look like the one they've faced in the past.

In coach Jack Del Rio's first season, the Raiders have surpassed their win total from each of the previous three campaigns, including a 3-13 showing in 2014. They're also on the verge of reaching the .500 mark in December for the first time since 2011.

Oakland ended a three-game slide last weekend by edging Tennessee 24-21 as Derek Carr connected with Seth Roberts on a 12-yard touchdown with 1:21 to go.

Carr also threw the go-ahead TD with 1:42 remaining in last season's home win against Kansas City, which ended the Raiders' 16-game losing streak and 0-10 start.

Carr's 24 TDs have him on pace to challenge Daryle Lamonica's franchise record of 34 set in 1969, the Raiders' final AFL season. Jeff George's 29 TDs in 1997 are the most by an Oakland quarterback since the team joined the NFL.

"It just shows us that we're doing things the right way," Carr said. "You can win in this league with the way we're doing things, but now we just have to continue to get better at doing it each and every week. You have to do it consistently in this league."

As a rookie, Carr had one TD in each of his two games against Kansas City and a combined 396 yards.

His counterpart, Alex Smith, has set a franchise mark for most consecutive pass attempts without an interception at 283. That's 11 shy of tying Green Bay Hall of Famer Bart Starr for the third-longest stretch in NFL history, set from 1964-65, and 25 shy of matching Bernie Kosar's 308 from 1990-91 for second place.

Tom Brady set the NFL record with 358 for New England from 2010-11.

Kansas City can become the first team to go six consecutive games without a turnover in one season since the 2010 Patriots went seven in a row. That New England team also won every game during the streak.

Scouting Report from the Kansas City Star (http://www.kansascity.com/sports/nfl/kansas-city-chiefs/article48180470.html):

A look at the key matchups for the Chiefs-Raiders game at 3:05 p.m. Sunday in Oakland. The game will air on CBS.

When the Chiefs run

EDGE >> CHIEFS
After sitting out the Chiefs’ 30-22 win over the Bills on Sunday with a hamstring injury, Charcandrick West is ready to tote the rock again for the Chiefs. He should get the start, but if he falters, don’t be surprised to see Spencer Ware — who boasts a superior yards-per-carry average (6.5 to 3.8) in roughly a third of the attempts (98 to 36) — get a chance to carry the mail. The Raiders run a 4-3 defense but they like to mix in a lot of five-man fronts with defensive linemen, with nose tackle Dan Williams (6-2, 330) being the best of the bunch. The Chiefs have relied on their running game of late and the Raiders have only been average here, so the edge goes to Kansas City.

When the Chiefs pass

EDGE >> CHIEFS
Chiefs quarterback Alex Smith has now thrown 283 passes without an interception, which is the fourth-longest streak in NFL history. He’s done an excellent job protecting the football and escaping trouble when pressured, which has aided an offensive line that has surrendered the third-most sacks in the league but has improved of late. Fortunately for the Chiefs, the Raiders’ pass rush — which ranks 16th in the league with 25 sacks — hasn’t been the same since star edge rusher Aldon Smith was suspended for a year, though edge rusher Khalil Mack (http://www.nfl.com/videos/nfl-top100-2015/0ap3000000496407/Top-100-Players-of-2015-No-49-Khalil-Mack) (6-3, 250) leads the team with seven sacks and has established himself as a bonafide star. Smith has a good track record against the Raiders — 14 career touchdowns to only one interception — and he should be able to keep it going this week, though he should be wary of 39-year-old safety Charles Woodson (http://www.nfl.com/videos/nfl-top100-2015/0ap3000000494239/Top-100-Players-of-2015-No-64-Charles-Woodson) (6-1, 210), an ageless wonder who leads the team in interceptions with five.

When the Raiders run

EDGE >> CHIEFS
Latavius Murray (6-3, 230) is a massive back with impressive athleticism. He is on track to rush for over 1,113 yards this year, but he’s rushed for an average of 45 yards in his last three games. Interestingly enough, the Raiders were without big-money free agent center Rodney Hudson — a former Chief — for two of those contests with an injury, and he will miss Sunday’s game, as well. His replacement, Tony Bergstrom (6-5, 315), likes to bob his head at the snap to draw defenders offside. Murray’s stats look nice, but Oakland offensive coordinator recently noted the importance of adding more balance to the mix, as they’ve run the ball just 38 percent of the time. They could have a hard time getting it established against a Chiefs defensive front that has been solid vs. the run and also returns Allen Bailey to the mix, but if they can successfully throw the ball to set up the run, the Raiders — who have some beef up front — have a chance to pose a dilemma.

When the Raiders pass

EDGE >> RAIDERS
Second-year quarterback Derek Carr (6-3, 215) has really blossomed this year. His accuracy and poise have improved, and he does a nice job getting the ball out quickly — a reason the Raiders have only surrendered a league-low 14 sacks. He also has some dangerous targets to throw to in big-play rookie Amari Cooper (6-1, 210) and veteran receiver Michael Crabtree (6-1, 215). Both are outstanding route runners and reliable targets, and their individual matchups against the Chiefs’ demonstrative cornerback combination of Sean Smith and Marcus Peters will be must-watch television. Third receiver Seth Roberts (6-2, 195) is also coming off a huge game, and is someone the Chiefs need to pay attention to. The Raiders’ tight ends are in the capable of hands of youngsters Mychal Rivera (6-3, 245) and Clive Walford (6-4, 250). Both are receiving tight ends. The key to disrupting the Raiders will be getting to Carr, a task that will be even more difficult without star edge rusher Justin Houston, who is out with an injury.

Special teams

EDGE >> RAIDERS
The Chiefs’ Cairo Santos leads the lead with 26 field goals, but his conversion percentage — 81 percent — is a tad shy of Oakland’s Sebastian Janikowski (84 percent). Janikowski also has a slightly better touchback percentage. Chiefs punter Dustin Colquitt had an off game against Buffalo last Sunday and is dealing with a knee injury on his off leg. Even without that, Oakland’s Marquette King has only dropped two fewer punts inside the 20 than he has. The Chiefs boast better kick and punt return averages, though the Chiefs will be without De’Anthony Thomas, who is dealing with a concussion. The Chiefs’ kick- and punt-coverage units are better statistically, but injuries give the Raiders a slight edge, overall.

Coaching

EDGE >> CHIEFS
New coach Jack Del Rio has a career record of 72-75, but he has brought the Raiders back to respectability. During his three years as the Broncos’ defensive coordinator, he always seemed to have good gameplans against the Chiefs, who went 0-6 against Denver during that timeframe. Veteran offensive coordinator Bill Musgrave’s unit ranks 10th in the league in yards per game — six spots ahead of the Chiefs while defensive coordinator Ken Norton, Jr’s unit ranks 27th —17 spots behind the Chiefs. So Del Rio is solid, and his staff is solid, but the Chiefs’ Andy Reid has a more proven track record and continuity on his side, too — he’s kept his staff together for the last three years.

X-factor

EDGE >> RAIDERS
Oakland needs this game to stay in the playoff race because a loss would drop them to 5-7, which would force them to essentially win out to keep their postseason dreams alive. Expect them to throw everything they’ve got at the Chiefs in this game.

Bottom line: Chiefs 27-23

The Chiefs need to be prepared to absorb Oakland’s best shot, and they probably will be. Remember, the last time the visited the Raiders, they lost to an 0-10 team on national television. That loss should have taught them not to underestimate an opponent, especially with this Raiders team, which is much better than last year’s version.

At the risk of sounding horribly cliche in my very first post on this forum. I really think the key to this game is getting pressure on a very young and promising QB early. Yes I just threw up in my mouth a little. I really haven't payed much attention to the Raiders this year. But the Raiders may have finally made a good decision at QB. They haven't had one imo since we gifted them Rich Gannon and kept that one guy who ran like a girl who's name I will not mention.....I really hate the raiders...really really hate them. GOOO CHIEFS!!!!

Looking forward to a good game. Hope Amari Cooper gets shut out. Like to see what our running backs can do vs. their LB's and secondary. Time to stomp Oakland into that pathetic thing they call a playing field.

Can't do that, Sunday nights are too busy in the restaurant business. But one day I need to buy a pad-thingy so that I can watch live-streams while I am at work. We're pretty much allowed to do what we want back in the kitchen so long as the food gets out promptly. :)

What's even worse then what you noted about their QB is they have a damn fine young WR to go with him.

IMO that is also a huge key to this game

Kelce trying to do too much. It just takes one dumb play to lose the frickin game!

matthewschiefs
12-06-2015, 05:32 PM
The first fumble was the biggest play of the half IMO

It gave them the field position and we couldn't get it back. They were getting the ball around mid field we were getting it inside our own 10.

Being -2 in the T.O. department we are lucky to only be down 7

brdempsey69
12-06-2015, 05:33 PM
Absolutely no excuse for Kelce not going out of bounds. He caught the ball right by the first down marker and had to see it and he had the chance to get out of bounds and he also didn't cover up the ball with both hands when he got into traffic.

If the Chiefs lose this game, we can thank Kelce for not refraining from this stupid hero-type crap that he was needlessly trying to pull.

The Chiefs really need a drive to get some points on this first Offensive series.

There is no question that the Chiefs LITERALLY stole the game from the Raiders, yesterday. But that sort of thing isn't something new regarding the history of the Chiefs-Raiders series.

Without a doubt my friend. I learned a long time ago that that when the Chiefs and Raiders lock horns to throw the stats out the window, and the phrase "Any given Sunday" takes on new meaning.

That's right. I still remember the final game of the 1999 regular season when the Raiders came in to Arrowhead and took a 41-38 overtime victory that kept the Chiefs out of the post-season that year.

YUP! Chiefs-Raiders game have a tendency to come right down to who wants it more regardless how good either team is. Without a doubt the entire Chiefs team just stood on their own two hind legs and said...."NO!!! No damned way we are going to lose this game!!!" And they didn't. This was not a picture perfect dismantling of another team. FAR FROM IT. This win was just pure GRIT. The Chiefs fought like hell to stay in this game and when they found they were still in it late in the game they said..."OK! Let's just go WIN!" And they did exactly that.

Every game from here out is CRUCIAL. You can't dig yourself a 1-5 hole and expect to dig yourself out of it easily. We have 4 games left and we MUST win at least 3 of them if we want to go to the playoffs. They need to just keep on winning.

That was a painful year.
