Chiefs among teams checking on QB Carson Wentz

John Dorsey is doing his homework even if his team seems to be out of reach on the heralded QB prospect.

The fact that John Dorsey's staff is doing the requisite homework on nearly every NFL prospect isn't news. What is interesting is that one of those prospects is quarterback Carson Wentz.
Yahoo! Sports Eric Adelson recently posted a nice feature on Carson Wentz's career at North Dakota State, and buried within was an anecdote that the Chiefs were among several teams checking out Wentz's background. Specifically the Chiefs were among the teams who'd talked to Ron Wingenbach, Wentz's high school coach. The Chargers and Raiders were also among the teams checking in on Wentz.

Mike Mayock has Wentz as the top overall quarterback available, and NFL.com projects Wentz as a Blake Bortles-type of quarterback. Given the state of several teams at the position, it's easy to see Wentz going at or near the very top of the first round of the NFL Draft. SB Nation's own Dan Kadar has Wentz going at No. 7 overall to the San Francisco 49ers in his latest mock draft.
Taken together, it's hard to see the Chiefs being able to even get close enough to dream of taking Wentz, but stranger things have happened than an unexpected quarterback fall. There's also the time Mike Ditka traded an entire draft class and a few pints of blood for Ricky Williams. So perhaps Dorsey has a similar move ready if he likes Wentz enough.
Likely what it does show us is three primary things:
1. Chase Daniel is not expected back.
2. The Chiefs will entertain a move, major or minor, at the quarterback position if it makes sense. ("Major" here meaning someone to back-up Alex Smith in 2016.)
3. The Chiefs want to make sure they are prepared for any and all draft scenarios.
