Weather forecast: http://nflweather.com/assets/weather/small/nclear-day.png 75 degrees farenheit, clear skies 8 mph W winds

Line: Don't be silly!, Over/Under: It's pre-season!

Trends: not yet

Notable Quotables:
Chiefs: "Across the board, whether it be the receiver group, the tight end group, the running back group, when you look at the skill positions we’re so deep. I feel like we’ve got a lot of guys that can make plays no matter who’s in there and that’s what you want. We’re able to mix it up personnel wise, get different match-ups what we’re looking for dependent on the group and it’s really fun to do that.”--Chiefs Quarterback Alex Smith

Rams: "I don’t know how much, but [Todd Gurley] is going to play. Maybe a series, maybe two. A couple carries, maybe some protection stuff and then get him out."--Rams Head Coach Jeff Fisher

The Chiefs head to Los Angeles to take on the relocated Rams

The very first time the Kansas City Chiefs travelled to the Los Angeles Coliseum for a game, it was for the world’s first Super Bowl against the Green Bay Packers.

While the stakes Saturday night, when the newly relocated Los Angeles Rams host the Chiefs in Week 2 of the preseason, are far lower, it doesn’t take away from the history of the venue, or the fact that this could be the last time the Chiefs ever play there.

Last week, the Rams drew nearly 90,000 people, breaking the preseason attendance record.

Potentially in front of another big crowd, head coach Andy Reid will continue bracing his team for the approaching regular season.

The Chiefs closed down their most productive training camp in Reid’s four-year Kansas City tenure on Thursday.

“It was the sharpest, but again, it should be the sharpest having been together four years,” Reid said. “You expect it to continue the longer you’re around. They’ve done it and they kind of know the offense, and defense and special teams. So, I would tell you – yeah, they started off sharp and finished sharp.”

Of course, it is hard to get through a training camp without a few bumps and bruises. Quarterback Tyler Bray (http://www.chiefs.com/team/roster/tyler-bray/06c10495-26ee-4af5-a790-fdff645985be/), linebackers Tamba Hali (http://www.chiefs.com/team/roster/tamba-hali/84489e56-3951-4a24-a013-68b4f98ddfaf/), Justin Houston (http://www.chiefs.com/team/roster/justin-houston/5e8d4a7d-d14c-4d40-b457-f7be49f9cde8/) and Josh Mauga (http://www.chiefs.com/team/roster/josh-mauga/7446b947-aba3-412f-b5fa-9593ad2532e2/) and running backs Jamaal Charles (http://www.chiefs.com/team/roster/jamaal-charles/0c648717-db12-4089-9222-b245a9db4fc3/) and Charcandrick West (http://www.chiefs.com/team/roster/charcandrick-west/469d1cdd-34c2-42f3-80cf-23ebe34587f7/) are expected to be held out Saturday.

Wide receiver Jeremy Maclin (http://www.chiefs.com/team/roster/jeremy-maclin/6383edc2-b027-4303-921d-2321355e7243/) and LB Dezman Moses (http://www.chiefs.com/team/roster/dezman-moses/680a1b59-ef60-4fad-bdfd-bfa838e2975c/) are expected to play despite being somewhat limited in practice this past week.

The playing time breakdown for the Chiefs against the Rams will be Alex Smith (http://www.chiefs.com/team/roster/alex-smith/dcd754ff-8e1b-4822-b124-a90ac6120120/) and the first team in the first half, followed by Nick Foles (http://www.chiefs.com/team/roster/nick-foles/b72be72d-8bf4-4b33-bc8b-fc1c6838fddd/) and the second team in the third quarter and Aaron Murray (http://www.chiefs.com/team/roster/aaron-murray/29893b32-ad47-43bf-b733-781bb71f3abf/) and Kevin Hogan (http://www.chiefs.com/team/roster/kevin-hogan/dabd20eb-6a48-4374-8c5c-a7efbd078e18/) and the third team in the fourth. Defensive coordinator Bob Sutton’s defense will likely follow suit.

This will be Foles’ first action against the Rams since they granted his release earlier this month.

http://www.chiefs.com/assets/images/imported/KC/photos/081916-Preview-Image.jpg

Smith said Thursday that he’s looking forward to getting some in-game repetitions with second-year WR Chris Conley (http://www.chiefs.com/team/roster/chris-conley/5cfcb031-8eb4-416c-9f2e-32d3a003aa82/) after an especially impressive final week of camp.

“This past week, Chris has played really well,” Smith said. “He continues to just add to his game. Physically he’s always had it, and I think mentally he’s been sharp. He’s been seeing things really well, he’s playing fast, and he’s made a bunch of strong catches as of late.”

Conley, Smith and the Chiefs first team will try to build upon their successful touchdown drive (http://www.chiefs.com/news/article-2/Chiefs-vs-Rams-Five-Things-to-Watch/28b04576-18dd-405d-a8bb-53952f4f8d26) from last week’s game against the Seahawks.

As Conley is standing out on offense, LB Justin March (http://www.chiefs.com/team/roster/justin-march/65855ea3-9d7c-4f60-9cc8-b01b24091fa3/) is doing the same on defense.

With Mauga unable to practice the last few days of camp, March has played well with the first team at the “Mike” linebacker position next to Derrick Johnson (http://www.chiefs.com/team/roster/derrick-johnson/361f2360-8ddb-4137-bd66-561e46714232/). Saturday will offer March the chance to work against another first team.

On the Rams unofficial team depth chart (http://www.therams.com/team/depth-chart.html), the first-team starting quarterback is listed as Case Keenum, but according to Rams head coach Jeff Fisher (http://www.latimes.com/sports/rams/la-sp-rams-cowboys-20160814-snap-story.html), it is “quite likely” that the 2016 first overall pick, Jared Goff, will take first-teams snaps against the Chiefs on Saturday night.

During draft season, the NFL’s lead analyst, Mike Mayock, said that Goff could “play on Day 1. (http://www.nfl.com/draft/2016/profiles/jared-goff?id=2555334) "March and the Chiefs first-team defense should have the opportunity to challenge that.

In front of March and Johnson, another player to watch is the first pick for the Chiefs in the 2016 draft in defensive tackle Chris Jones (http://www.chiefs.com/team/roster/chris-jones/57012a70-e70e-4afd-8e68-45892dfb68a1/), who has impressed the coaching staff throughout camp.

http://www.chiefs.com/assets/images/imported/KC/photos/081916-Preview-Image2.jpg

“He’s got a good way about him,” defensive line coach Britt Reid said of Jones. “He came into a room that had some established guys and that’s not always the easiest thing to come into. It helps that he’s a good football player, but he has a good way about him and he does show that on the field.”

Including reigning Defensive Rookie of the Year Marcus Peters (http://www.chiefs.com/team/roster/marcus-peters/0974ad95-eadc-43fa-b6ea-6fc223e97c8a/), the Chiefs also have some good, young talent to watch at the cornerback position in Steve Nelson, Phillip Gaines (http://www.chiefs.com/team/roster/phillip-gaines/f5df53a8-d02c-49f3-8c55-bbc6f4ae3468/), Marcus Cooper (http://www.chiefs.com/team/roster/marcus-cooper/ddae28df-ebaa-4c89-ad85-b74b1fced23b/) and rookie D.J. White (http://www.chiefs.com/team/roster/dj-white/6afcc32c-1924-42b8-9ea9-9acfc91cdfa8/).

“Everybody’s working hard,” assistant cornerbacks coach Al Harris said. “Steve’s doing a good job, Marcus is doing a good job and D.J. is actually doing a good job.”

Two of Los Angeles’ best players, RB Todd Gurley and defensive end Robert Quinn, are expected to make their preseason debuts against the Chiefs after being held out with injuries last week.

This Saturday night, the Chiefs become the second team to play against the Rams in the NFL’s return to the Los Angeles market. In its current environment, Los Angeles has a case for the best place the Chiefs could possibly go to mimic a true regular-season feel.

There is no other team out there with fans more excited that football is back, and the Coliseum should once again be rocking on Saturday night.

are you kiddin' me....the original Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum that was built in 1492??? unbelievable. during the war me and some pals drove up from San Diego to watch the Rams play. problem was we had to drive thru skid row. block after block of drunks. they ran out in the street hoping I would hit em for a tasty settlement. so I drove back and forth dodging drunks. their sons, or grandsons probably took over today jez...................

I probably won't be posting much during the game tonight. I've got the Chiefs on the big screen, the Royals on the radio, the Cubs on the laptop, the Chicago Fire on the 11" tablet and the White Sox on the 9" tablet. That leaves my phone to follow this thread but typing on it is a real pain.

So ... Go Chiefs!

Gaines hasn't proven anything. If thats the case than Cooper proved himself when he 1st came here. don't tell cbeifs4life24 that he thinks Reaves fumbled the snap. it hit Murray right jn the hands and he never caught it lr had control of it at all then he tried to act like he tried to hand it off just to try an act like it was a fumbled hand off instead of a fumbled snap.

Between Sutton and Reid thats the possibility of 2 losses based on their calls

jason1981
08-21-2016, 05:51 PM
yeah just like 2 straight swing passes then a run play that Murray fumbled the snap. why were they in shotgun instead of under Center an just run the ball and kill the clock and kick it to win. Reid's play calling at its best again. just like earlier in the game he kept on passing sideways and took no shots into tje end zone. Reid's play calling will atleast costs us 2 games and Sutton will cost us 2 games so that will be 4 games that coaches losses the games for us.

ctchiefsfan
08-22-2016, 10:24 AM
Yup. Some of Reid's play calling does leave us wondering WTF??? But every time I want to slit his throat I keep remembering 2-14 to 11-5 and 31-17 over 3 years regular season and 3 years in a row of winning seasons and breaking the curse. When I add all that up against some befuddling play-calling I keep coming to the same conclusion....Andy Reid is a damned good coach. What I find really striking is the 2-14 to 11-5 turnaround. Reid did that with a team that was largely unchanged personel-wise other than the addition of Alex Smith. And to be honest, I don't think anybody is going to call Alex the second coming of Joe Montana.

Yeah...Reid is maddening sometimes with his play-calling and clock management but if you judge him on results he looks pretty damned good to me.

yeah just like 2 straight swing passes then a run play that Murray fumbled the snap. why were they in shotgun instead of under Center an just run the ball and kill the clock and kick it to win. ...

If this was a real-live, regular season game that actually counted, I might agree with you. But it wasn't. Maybe Reid didn't care about kicking a FG and getitng a meaningless win. Maybe he wanted to see if Murray and the also-rans could get a touchdown while they were in the red zone. Maybe he wanted to evaluate some of those players in an end-of-game, down-by-4 situation. Isn't player evaluation what the preseason games are for?

I agree that sometimes Reid's play calling leaves me scratching my head, but if this game had counted I'm pretty sure he would have just ate up as much clock as possible and kicked the field goal. But I can't get too mad at him for working on some plays, now, when the games don't count so he can be beter informed when it comes time to make those difficult cuts.

A tip of my hat Sir.

yeah it just looked like he called the same play twice in a row but I'm not sure. I agree with you though.

The thing to remember is that the primary goal in pre-season is for the coaches to evaluate players so as to have the best line-up possible once the regular season starts. Winning pre-season games is secondary.
