Jamaal Charles is going on injured reserve after reportedly meeting with Dr. James Andrews this week. Multiple outlets are reporting the move to IR, which will end his season.

Given this injury and the emergence of Spencer Ware, it’s fair to wonder if this is it for Jamaal in KC. His knee flared up two weeks ago and he was sent back to the doctor this week. Obviously those conversations could’ve have been good if this is the way it turns out.
The team has clearly proven they can win without him given their record without him the past two seasons. The Chiefs won 11 in a row without him last year and have started 5-2 this year with little contributions for him.
It’s weird to think but is this it?

I don't think Jamaal Charles is done. He's too much of a competitor. He will get it fixed and try again.

While this is true, he is human and he is already at the age where Running backs just fall off the competitive playing field. His biggest asset as his speed and agility. The moment he loses any step he is done.

I have felt since last year when both Ware and West did so well that JC's days with the Chiefs were just about up. Both because of his age and because of his cap hit next year ($7 million IIRC). We are going to need cash to do a new deal with Poe and maybe Berry.

That said, this renewed injury just might open a way for JC to be with the Chiefs next year. JC is one hell of a competitor and I don't doubt for a second that that if he feels he is fit enough to play next year he will want to. But not many teams are going to have much interest in taking a chance on a 30 year old RB coming off his 3rd surgery. As a result if JC wants to play again next year the only likely way for that to happen may be for him to renegotiate his contract with the Chiefs to spread his $7 million over 3-4 years thereby creating cash for the Chiefs to spend on Poe and Berry. I just don't see any other way that he stays with the Chiefs. And of course JC may just decide that after missing most of two seasons that it's simply time for him to hang up the cleats.

Personally, I'd like to see JC renegotiate his contract and find a way to leave the Chiefs after having had one more season that hopefully would remind us all of how great he was. After all he has done for the Chiefs he deserves to go out gracefully and with Arrowhead ROCKING every time he steps on the field.
