The Chiefs could clinch a playoff berth with a win at a bitterly cold Arrowhead Stadium on Sunday

Sunday marks the final out-of-division game of the regular season for the Kansas City Chiefs (10-3), but despite that fact, the playoff implications couldn’t be higher.

With a win, the Chiefs clinch their third playoff berth (http://www.chiefs.com/news/article-2/Looking-at-the-NFL-Playoff-Scenarios-for-this-Weekend/7c12cb26-ebdb-4037-a6b8-4c31cafd404e) in four seasons, while their opponents in the visiting Tennessee Titans (7-6) need a win to stay alive in a congested AFC South.

“There’s a lot of reasons and incentives put on this game,” Chiefs quarterback Alex Smith (http://www.chiefs.com/team/roster/alex-smith/dcd754ff-8e1b-4822-b124-a90ac6120120/) said this week.
“[Clinching a playoff berth is] certainly one of them – no question. Every team wants a ticket to the dance and you can’t win it unless you get in. To be able to clinch this week, that is important for sure.”

One of the most unique aspects of this game will be the role the weather plays in it, as Sunday’s low temperature in Kansas City will reportedly be below 10 degrees Fahrenheit (http://www.kctv5.com/category/214521/7-day-forecast). Smith said that being able to practice in Kansas City all week, a luxury the Titans haven’t had, could be critical to how the Chiefs come out of the gate in those conditions.

“Last week was pretty close to what it will be like this week,” Smith said. “We’ve been outside in the elements a lot and it’s been good practice for us.”

The coldest game at Arrowhead Stadium since 1994 was December 17, 2000, when the temperature at kickoff was only 9 degrees Fahrenheit.

With low temperatures, there could be a higher propensity to run the football, and the Titans boast one of the league’s finest running back tandems in DeMarco Murray and rookie Heisman winner Derrick Henry.

“These are just two guys that are sharing a load,” Chiefs defensive coordinator Bob Sutton said. “They’re obviously a heavy run team. I think they’ve just tried to spread that out a little bit. So, as it’s getting close to the end, they have two fresh guys instead of one that’s just beat down from the wear and tear of the season, and it’s worked very well for them. Both of them are very capable players. To us, there’s no drop off.”

Murray ranks second in the NFL this season with 1,135 yards rushing on 250 carries (4.5 yards per attempt) for nine touchdowns, and Henry has 354 yards on 82 carries (4.3 yards per attempt) and two touchdowns.

After posting outputs of 38 yards receiving or less during the Chiefs’ first six games, Hill has averaged 60.3 over the last seven. He is currently the reigning AFC Special Teams Player of the Week (http://www.chiefs.com/news/article-2/Tyreek-Hill-Named-AFC-Special-Teams-Player-of-the-Week/de32bbab-465b-48b1-aa2d-44868aca7088) thanks to his 78-yard punt return touchdown last Thursday against the Oakland Raiders.

Only two other tight ends in the history of the NFL have recorded such a feat—Tony Gonzalez and Jimmy Graham—and if Kelce can record another Sunday, he’d be the first at his position with five in a row.

“100-yard games for tight ends are rare,” Chiefs co-offensive coordinator Brad Childress said this week. “I don’t think anyone realizes at the end of the game that, ‘Hey this guy just had a 100-yard game.’ We’ve come to look to him for big plays—even catch-and-run plays. A lot of guys can catch and fall down but he has the ability to catch and run after the play.”

On the defensive side of the football, the Chiefs enter familiar territory from just two seasons ago, as they deal with the loss of Derrick Johnson (http://www.chiefs.com/team/roster/derrick-johnson/361f2360-8ddb-4137-bd66-561e46714232/) due to a ruptured left Achilles injury (http://www.chiefs.com/news/article-2/A-Look-at-Derrick-Johnson%E2%80%99s-%E2%80%9816-Role-With-Chiefs-Moving-Forward/88ac65e5-cf65-45b0-91f2-505d7990e6dd). “We’re not going to replace Derrick,” Sutton said. “He’s a Pro Bowl football player, veteran guy, has a great voice in our locker room, great energy. We hate to lose him, but we’ve been through this before with different guys from EB [Eric Berry (http://www.chiefs.com/team/roster/eric-berry/d1d2889d-9b55-4003-9677-19242d762855/)], to Justin [Houston], to whatever. Those other guys have done a great job preparing for these first 12 weeks.”

While the Marcus Mariota and Delanie Walker-led Titans offense is ranked No. 8 in the league based upon yards per game (372.3), the defense falls closer to the other end of the spectrum, ranking No. 22 based upon yards allowed (361.5).

The Titans boast a very talented defensive line, highlighted by linebackers Brian Orakpo and Derrick Morgan, who have 10 and nine sacks, respectively.

In what should be one of the coldest regular-season games in recent history, the Chiefs host the Titans Sunday in a game that could be, but shouldn’t be, overlooked.

With the Chiefs holding on to that No. 2 position in the AFC and the Titans still in the thick of a playoff race, there is still much to play for.

Matchups late in the season between would-be playoffs teams, in a sense, are playoff games themselves, and that’s what Sunday is.

Chiefs can secure playoff berth with win vs. Titans

Just one victory away from clinching a spot in the AFC playoffs, the Kansas City Chiefs host the Tennessee Titans on Sunday at Arrowhead Stadium.

Early weather predictions call for temperatures in the low teens with the wind-chill factor falling into single digits. That's cold conditions for even Kansas City in December.

The 10-3 Chiefs moved into the control seat of the AFC West with their victory last week over Oakland in similar conditions. Head coach Andy Reid's team can assure itself of at least a spot in the six-team postseason field with one more victory in the remaining three games.

"Every game is important as you go down the stretch," Reid said. "Nothing has been declared yet, so you've got to keep the pedal to the metal."

The 7-6 Titans will arrive in Kansas City with their postseason chances still alive. They share first place in the AFC South with the Houston Texans. Tennessee is coming off a 13-10 victory over Denver on Sunday in Nashville.

The man that leads the offense says the Titans will have quite a task dealing with the Chiefs' defense at Arrowhead and in the cold.

"I think they have a great defense," quarterback Marcus Mariota said. "They have a bunch of playmakers across the board. They find ways to get turnovers and when they do, they're really good at turning it into points. Up front they do a great job of doing different things, causing some identification problems and just doing things in terms of communication for an offense. You have to make sure everyone's on the same page and doing the same thing."

Mariota comes off his least productive performance of the 2016 season last Sunday against Denver. He threw for only 88 yards, completing just six of 20 passes, a completion percentage of 30 percent and an average of 4.4 yards per attempt.

That doesn't jive with his play in November, when he was named the AFC's Offensive Player of the Month with 11 scoring throws, two interceptions, a completion percentage of 66 percent and an average of 8.7 yards per attempt.

Reid has been very impressed by Mariota's overall performance this year.

"His ability to throw the football and read the defenses have come a long ways," Reid said. "Things have slowed down for him. The addition of the run game has also helped their football team. You can see that he's more comfortable now then he was when he first came in. He's healthy now too, which helps."

Kansas City is coming off a mini-bye after winning last Thursday night. That 21-13 victory over the Raiders was the third for the Chiefs in 12 days, with two of those on the road -- including a 75-minute overtime decision against Denver. That was three victories by a total of 12 points.

"It was a gritty, gritty performance," Reid said. "That's a tough thing to do with that many games in that short period of time and to play at a high level against really good football teams. I think credit is due there."

"The games just get bigger every week when you are in this situation," Kansas City quarterback Alex Smith said. "It's so close right now, you can't start counting the games and doing the math. You can't let yourself go there. We have a team coming in that's really playing good and we have to take care of our business."

For another victory, the Chiefs' defense must handle a strong Titans running game that put up 180 yards against the highly ranked Denver defense. Tennessee is also the NFL's top offense in the red zone, scoring touchdowns on 71.4 percent of its 42 trips inside the 20-yard line. The Titans are the fourth-best third-down offense, converting 46 percent of their chances.

In the season's first 13 games, head coach Mike Mularkey's team has been in the mix for victory every week. Tennessee has not lost by double digits, and it has won four games that were decided by six points or less. The Titans also are 3-3 on the road.

"Every one of these games, we've had a chance to win," Mularkey said. "They've all been close. We've won some of them. We've lost some of the close ones. I think the experience has been great for (the players.) Our guys believe we're going to win the game, no matter what the situation is."

But in the NFL, that's considered old news and promises nothing for the coming Sunday.

The Scheme

Coach: Mike Mularkey (25-45) is in his fifth year as an NFL head coach, and his first full season as the Titans’ leader. Mularkey, 55, took over for Ken Whisenhunt midway through last season, but he served as the Bills’ head coach in 2004 and 2005 and the Jaguars’ head coach in 2012. A former NFL tight end, Mularkey’s special is the offense, and he’s spent eight years as an NFL offensive coordinator.

Offense: Terry Robiske, 62, is in his first year as the Titans’ offensive coordinator and his seventh overall as an NFL offensive coordinator. The Titans rank 25th in the league in passing (227.8 yards per game) and third in rushing (144.5). The Titans have rushed the ball approximately 51 percent of the time and have gone shotgun approximately 50 percent of the time. The Titans are also a predominantly two-tight end team that is not overly reliant on playaction; they’ve called it approximately 18 percent of the time, according to Football Outsiders (http://www.footballoutsiders.com/), which ranks 16th.

Defense: Dick LeBeau, 79, is in his second year as Tennessee’s defensive coordinator and his 19th overall as an NFL defensive coordinator. The Titans currently rank 31st in passing defense (274.9 yards per game) and third in rushing defense (86.6 yards per game). The Titans blitz a healthy amount of the time and are predominantly a 3-4 team. The Titans are tied for sixth in the NFL with 33 sacks and are 22nd in turnovers forced with 15.

Special teams: Steve Hoffman, 58, is in his first season as Titans’ special teams coach and fifth year overall as a NFL special teams coach. He took over in early October for Bobby April, who was relieved of his duties. Kicker Ryan Succop has converted 90 percent of his field goals, which ranks eighth. Punter Brett Kern has dropped 24 punts inside the 20, which ranks eighth. The Titans’ coverage units rank in the bottom five of kickoffs and punts, and they’ve also surrendered two punt-return touchdowns. The Titans’ return squads both rank in the bottom 10 of the league, as well.

Four keys to a Chiefs victory

1. Keep Kelce rolling

Tight end Travis Kelce is on an absolute roll right now. The fourth-year pro has racked up over 100 yards in each of his last four games, all while being targeted 40 times. He happens to be facing a Tennessee team this week that struggles to cover tight ends and will be without one of their best cover linebacker, Sean Spence. The Titans will do what they can to take him away but if there are some opportunities to feed him the rock, they should take them.

2. Beware the blitz

Titans defensive coordinator Dick LeBeau is a defensive legend. The architect of the famed “Blitzburgh” scheme will still bring it via the blitz, which emphasizes the need to run the ball effectively and avoid obvious passing situations. The Titans, however, boast a strong run defense, and if you do get in third-and-long, LeBeau can and will bring safeties and corners from all over the place. The offensive line, which has played together for six games now, will need to keep its head on a swivel to keep quarterback Alex Smith clean.

3. Maintain gap discipline and wrap up

There’s no doubt about it; Tennessee is going to run the ball. The Titans have dialed up the run approximately 49 percent of the time, the second-most in the league behind Dallas’ behemoth front. The Titans also like to use two or more tight ends frequently, leading to a smashmouth game. They will absolutely target the Chiefs’ already-shaky run defense now that star inside linebacker Derrick Johnson is officially out for the season with a torn left Achilles. That means Johnson’s replacement, whether it be D.J. Alexander or Terrance Smith, will have to be disciplined with his eyes and be physical at the point. Expect the Titans to pound the ball up the middle.

4. Force some turnovers

Titans quarterback Marcus Mariota is absolutely marvelous in the red zone; during his two-year NFL career, he’s managed to throw 32 touchdown passes without a single red-zone interception. But he’s also been a bit turnover prone this season, as he’s fumbled eight times, losing four. The Titans rank in a four-way tie for 12th in turnover margin with plus-2, but turnovers have made the difference in more than a few of their losses. Look for the Chiefs to aggressively try to punch the ball out and create extra possessions against the ground-oriented Titans.

Four Titans to watch

No. 8, QB Marcus Mariota, 23 years old, 6-4, 228, second season

Former No. 2 overall pick in 2015 has completed 62.6 percent of his passes for 3,086 yards with 25 touchdowns and eight interceptions this season. Has also rushed 57 times for 348 yards and two touchdowns. Intelligent player with a nice combination of size, athleticism and arm talent. Some in the Chiefs’ organization thought he was similar to Alex Smith before the 2015 NFL Draft. Has a nice command of the offense and seems to be coming into his own this year. Generally makes very good decisions – hasn’t thrown a red-zone interception yet – and is quite adept at extending plays, though he’s been pressured a league-low 13.5 percent of the time, according to Football Outsiders. Has legitimately impressed Chiefs defensive coordinator Bob Sutton. “He’s legitimately fast, as fast as any quarterback we’ve played,” Sutton said. “Not only on scrambles, but they’ve got the zone-read plays in there as well.”

No. 29, RB DeMarco Murray, 28 years old, 6-0, 217, sixth season

Has rushed 250 times for 1,135 yards and nine touchdowns in a bounceback campaign following a disappointing one-year stint in Philadelphia. Has also caught 45 passes for 309 yards and three touchdowns. Has terrific inline running skill with good vision, but also has the speed to bounce it out. Is adept at breaking tackles; has forced 46 this year, the 10th-most in the league. Has been a workhorse the last three years and is a good receiver and adept pass blocker. “Dynamic back who looks like he did in Dallas,” Sutton said.

No. 99, DT Jurrell Casey, 27 years old, 6-1, 305, sixth season

Missed last Sunday’s game with a foot injury and is questionable this week but is a legitimate force when healthy. The Chiefs know this, too; he was unblockable the last time the Chiefs faced the Titans (2014). Has recorded 34 tackles, three sacks and 15 pressures and three pass deflections in 12 games this year. Gap shooter with good quickness and power who has been a consistent pass-rush threat the last four years, as he’s racked up an impressive 25 1/2 sacks. Occasionally stands up and rushes instead of putting his hand in the dirt, which gives him a running start.

No. 91, OLB Derrick Morgan, 27 years old, 6-3, 261, seventh season

Overwhelmingly pass rushes from the left side. Good athlete who poses slew-footed tackles problems. Has racked up 25 tackles, nine sacks and a team-leading 21 pressures this season. Complete player vs. the run and the pass but stands out as a pass rusher, where he’s good at converting speed to power. “He has some slither to him and a nice spin move,” co-offensive coordinator Brad Childress said.

Bonus notes on the Titans

*The Titans will turn to six offensive a decent amount. Against the Broncos, they brought in tackle Dennis Kelly for a six-lineman look a whopping 11 times.

*The running back combination of DeMarco Murray and Derrick Henry is excellent. Henry, a second-round pick this year, boasts a unique blend of size and speed and has a very high ceiling. He’s got a couple big seasons in him once he becomes the No. 1 guy.

*When you see Jalston Fowler in the game, the Titans are probably running the ball. He’s been used as a run blocker on 117 of 154 snaps, per PFF (http://www.profootballfocus.com/).

*Receiver was expected to be a trouble spot for the Titans, but free-agent Rishard Matthewshas answered the bell. He’s continued to build on a breakout 2015 season with the Dolphins by catching 49 passes for 695 yards and seven touchdowns.

*Tight end Delanie Walker ranked No. 82 on the NFL’s Top 100 list for 2016. He’s an excellent receiver who essentially serves as quarterback Marcus Mariota’s security blanket. “He’s really fast,” Sutton said. “Delanie has great speed for that position, he’s very strong and he can run through tackles.”

*The Titans like to use third tight end Phillip Supernaw, a former Chief, a healthy amount. He earned 21 of 67 snaps against the Broncos and has played nearly 30 percent of the Titans’ offensive snaps. Their reliance on three tight ends should tell you a little bit about this team’s offensive philosophy.

*The Titans boast one of the league’s best young tackle combinations in Taylor Lewan andJack Conklin. Both are good athletes with good feet. Lewan is nasty, tough and highly competitive. Conklin uses his long levers well, which he showed against Von Miller last week. The Chiefs will need to bring it to get home on these two.

*Brian Orakpo forms a nice edge-rush combo with Derrick Morgan. Morgan leads the Titans in hurries (21), but Orakpo isn’t far behind (17) and has the edge in sacks (10 to nine). Teams have had some success running toward Orakpo, however, so it will be interesting to see if that continues Sunday.

*Avery Williamson is a throwback inside linebacker who is good against the run and struggles in coverage. The Chiefs could have some success attacking the middle of the field with Travis Kelce or their assortment of running backs.

*You can make some hay against these corners. The Broncos threw on Jason McCourtyplenty; he yielded nine completions on 11 targets for 87 yards and a touchdown against the Broncos, per PFF (http://www.profootballfocus.com/). Valentino Blake served as the nickel corner last week after the team unceremoniously released veteran Perrish Cox.

*Some of these defensive backs, specifically Daimion Stafford and Rashad Johnson, will occasionally whiff on tackles. Stfford’s missed 10 while Johnson has missed seven, according to Football Outsiders (http://www.footballoutsiders.com/). Teams have also had some success running to cornerback Brice McCain’s side; he’s missed six tackles.

Prediction: Chiefs 17-14

The weather outside will be frightful (approximately six degrees at kickoff), which favors a ground-oriented team like the Titans. But the Chiefs are plenty physical too, and they’ve also proved plenty of times this season that they’re mentally tough. The Chiefs are the better, more talented team, and they’re playing at home. A victory will keep them on track to earn a first-round bye, so they understand the importance of this game. Barring an unexpected letdown, they should find a way to win a close, physical game.

there comes a point in time where you should be learning from your past mistakes. Reid doesn't see a problem with his play calling yet the entire fan base and his own players see that he needs to open up the playbook more. Is the sky falling? No, but if he can't see a problem our organization is doomed from a Super Bowl win however long he is calling the offensive plays. If he doesn't see Alex Smith as suitable to run the style of offense we need then Alex needs to go.

remember REID has NEVER won a Super Bowl. Our team has the talent to get there I just hope Andy doesn't hinder us.
