Chiefs to Honor Will Shields for His Accomplishment on and Off the Field

When the Kansas City Chiefs host the legendary Green Bay Packers this Sunday, Arrowhead Stadium is sure to have a special shade of red. However, it might not totally be the result of the hometown fans pulling for the Chiefs to stay atop the AFC West standings. That’s because the game will feature a special recognition for Chiefs stalwart G Will Shields. The living legend will receive this acknowledgment during halftime of the contest. But the Lawton, Okalahoma native will be honored just as much for his impact off the gridiron as for his on-field achievements.
A 14-year veteran of the Red and Gold, Shields was one of the finest players in the illustrious history of the franchise and one of the all-time elite performers at his position in NFL annals. Prior to announcing his retirement on April 15, 2007, Shields attended a Chiefs-record 12 Pro Bowls and started a remarkable 223 consecutive games. Throughout the course of his career, he was considered a shining example of the prototypical guard.
Shields is also no stranger to achievements that are philanthropic in nature. The 2003 Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year, Shields has garnered a myriad of other recognitions. Having received the Henry P. Iba Citizen Athlete Award (Rotary Club of Tulsa - 2005), collecting the title as Philanthropist of the Year (K.C. Council on Philanthropy – 2005), being named the NFL’s Top Good Guy (The Sporting News - 2001) and taking the inaugural The Arthur S. Arkush Humanitarian of the Year (Pro Football Weekly – 1999) he set a benchmark for community service. Additionally, Shields served as the team’s spokesperson in the highly-regarded United Way television spot series. Since the inception of his Will to Succeed Foundation in 1993, Will and his wife, Senia, have assisted over 100,000 individuals.
“I have had the distinct pleasure to witness first-hand the involvement that Will and his wife, Senia, have in the Kansas City community,” Chiefs President Carl Peterson recently noted. “Simply put, they have done everything the right way.”
The list of organizations that Shields and his Foundation have worked with reads like a Who’s Who of highly recognized outreach entities. From Operation Breakthrough to the Marillac Center for Children to Niles Home for Children to Sheffield Place to Safehome, he and Senia always seem to be there offering a helping hand or some much-needed financial assistance. Of course Shields’ influence stretches well past the metro area. Earlier this spring the 6-3, 320 pounder, who has hosted free football camps in his Oklahoma and New Jersey, spent time on a USO trip where he visited with troops serving in the Middle East.
In Shields’ honor, the Chiefs are also welcoming the Marching Red from his alma mater of the University of Nebraska. They will be performing at halftime following Shields’ ceremony. Founded in 1879, the Marching Red consists of 290 students from over 70 different academic majors.
