GRETZ: A Mid-Season Comparison

Nov 07, 2007, 5:56:59 AM by Bob Gretz (http://www.kcchiefs.com/news/bob_gretz/) - FAQ (http://www.kcchiefs.com/news/2004/01/19/bob_gretz_faq/)

Herm Edwards said it Tuesday. In fact he said it several times.
“We have to score more points,” the Chiefs head coach said. “We have to get a spark from our offense.”
More like an inferno. The Chiefs are at the .500 mark at mid-season and when the numbers are broken down compared to the halfway point last season, it’s obvious where the problems lie.
The Chiefs are one-game worse this year than last because of their offense and special teams. Both have taken a step backwards from last season. The Chiefs have a difference in 36 points in the point differential category between the two half seasons. Plus, their penalties are up.
Outside of the defense, which shows improvement from this mid-season to last year, the only statistics that’s better is in offensive passing yardage, as the Chiefs are averaging 4.8 yards per game more than previously. However, they are rushing for 41.5 yards less after eight games in 2007 compared to eight games in the 2006 season.
The Chiefs offense is this team’s problem and it’s not hard to zero in on the area causing the lack of production: the offensive line. It’s why this team has struggled for eight games and why that battle will continue for another eight weeks. Without more point production, this will not be a happy holiday season around Arrowhead Stadium.
In the first half of the season, the Chiefs scored 124 points, or an average of 15.5 points per game. They are on a pace to score 248 points. The last time they scored that poorly was in 1979, their second season under Marv Levy when they scored 238 points, or an average of 14.9 points per game.
That year they finished 7-9 and in last place in the five-team AFC West. This year, with the division playing the way it is, they might finish 7-9 and tie for first place. If Denver knocks off the Chiefs this Sunday and San Diego falls to Indianapolis, that would leave the Chiefs, Chargers and Broncos all tied at 4-5.
Right now, the Chiefs must find a way to pump up their point production, especially in the first quarter, when they’ve scored just 13 points and in the first half when they have just 49 points.
And they are going to have to start that process this Sunday against Denver without Larry Johnson, who will be on the sidelines with a sprained right foot.

Accoording to this we are doing better on getting Passing yards this year that we did last year. Ummm.....and it's with Huard? And we have the same Pass ranking......geez Huard again.......I wonder why he is playing again. Oh yeah, he gives us the best oppurtunity to win right now, that's right.

Sacks allowed is up.

Penalties up.

Offensive points per game down.

Offensive yards down.

Rushing yards down.

Offensive TD's down.

Defensively, we're doing great. Offensively we're terrible. Absolutely terrible. This offense needs a serious shake up starting with Huard and his knee braces.

Funny though, how the rushing stats appear to have a rather large difference, whereas the passing stats are pretty similar. Wow. One might even think that if the rushing stats were a little better it might give the passing game some form of mystical advantage. Or should we go ahead and blame Huard for the poor rushing stats?

12 INTS for all of last year(Green had 9 of those, 3 for Huard). 9 INTS already this year. So Huard has tripled the amount INTS he's thown last year in the same amount of games this year. The Chiefs are in a 3 way tie for 12th for most INTS this year.

Offensive TD's down 8 from last year. You can pass the ball all you want. But when you have more INT than TD and the TD have dropped dramatically, having the same passing yards doesn't mean squat.

It's a lot easier to theow the ball, and even score touchdowns, when you can run the ball effectively. It keeps you from having alot of third-and-longs, which become desperation attempts after so many.

Last year, Huard had a running game to help him out. Most NFL quarterbacks have that. If they don't, then they had better be getting time in the pocket to find recievers. Huard is getting niether. Most of the time, no matter who the quarterback is, if he isn't getting either of those things, then he will not do very well.

Don't forget that Huard played the first 8 games of last year as well, not Green. It seems like you are inferring that the 2006 stats being shown belong to Trent Green.

Can we run YET? O line failure.. When have we run a decent screen pass? Holmes ready for one? He used to be..Like you all have said take pressure off the Q.B. We need this win. Lets see some points Chiefs.

I'm not sure, but I think LJ scored on a 30+ yard screen pass against GB.

There was a lot of blocking for him, but I'm not sure Priest could have dove through the defender at the goal line like LJ did.

Still happy we have Priest back at such a fortunate time though.

Did We Win? I wore 31 Last week Sun--I saw it,, but can he carry the running load which I have not seen-- Where is the running game of old? Indy last year put an end to that. They come again..A 100* plus game gets the pressure off the Q.B. controversey.. an :"OOO" dominant line would be nice. Blow them of the line. I am not convinced we even have a decent screen.

Hey guy, I'm with you there.

Even a decent O line would be nice at this point.

I think we could be using what we have up front better, the coaches just don't trust the offense enough.

One reason that we haven't been running alot of screen passes may be because our offensive linemen aren't as mobile as the groups that we have had recently. Roaf and Shields were always good on the move. 'Tosh, Terry and Welbourne may not be showing the coaching staff what they need to see, in order to call those plays.
