Notable Quotables:
Chiefs:

“We just want to be nasty. Just having 11 guys fly around making plays. ... Going out there, being fundamentally sound and then at the end of the day just going out there flying around.”

--Chiefs Cornerback Kendall Fuller

Chargers:

“The Quarterback, I think he's got a chance to be really good. If you look at the history of Coach Reid's offenses, the quarterbacks have really thrived in it and his system I think fits his skill set very well.”

--Chargers defensive coordinator Gus Bradley on Patrick Mahomes

The Chiefs are now Patrick Mahomes' team,
but this is a tough road start against a good
pass-rushing team. The Chargers will get
after Mahomes and force a couple of turn-
overs that Philip Rivers will turn into points.
Chargers take it. The Chiefs have defensive

Football is back.

After months of anticipation – beginning with the Draft back in April all the way through offseason practices, training camp and a slate of preseason games – the Kansas City Chiefs will kick off another season on Sunday afternoon against the division rival Los Angeles Chargers.

It’s an opportunity to finally put an offseason’s worth of work to the test against an opponent – and a familiar one at that.

The Chiefs have won eight-straight matchups over the Chargers dating back to 2014, outscoring Los Angeles by an average of more than 12 points per game.

In fact, Kansas City is only a victory away from the longest winning streak over the Chargers in franchise history. It’s an impressive run considering the ever-changing circumstances from season to season, but as far as Head Coach Andy Reid is concerned, the streak doesn’t mean a thing on Sunday.

“We don’t look at that. We’re just getting ready for this team here,” Reid said earlier this week. “That’s all history - right now is what counts. We have to get ourselves ready for a good team, and this preparation over the next few days is very important.”

That preparation includes putting second-year quarterback Patrick Mahomes in a position to succeed against a Chargers’ defensive group that held opposing signal callers to the fourth-lowest passer rating in the NFL last season (78.1).

Defenses differ from year to year – and it’s important to note that star defensive end Joey Bosa won’t be playing in the game with a foot injury - but Los Angeles certainly presents an intriguing test for Kansas City’s young signal caller on the onset of his first full season as the starter under center.

“They have a ton of talent everywhere. They’ve had it for the last couple years and it seems like they just keep adding in players [to their defense],” Mahomes said. “We’re just going to try to attack using our strengths and the weapons that we have. Hopefully, we can put up some points and get a win.”

https://static.clubs.nfl.com/image/private/t_landscape_tablet/f_auto/chiefs/wk3ehwrrhxodk5xt5j0y.jpg

That spirit of consistently attacking the opposition is something that Mahomes expects to be a trademark of the Chiefs’ offense this season, beginning with Sunday’s contest.

“We want to attack every aspect of the field. I feel like we have the weapons that we can attack short, run the ball, stretch the defense deep, and attack the middle with the guys that we have,” Mahomes explained. “We just have to make sure we keep the defense honest on every single play.”

One way to demand that honesty from the opposition is to run the ball effectively, and interestingly enough, nobody was better at doing so against the Chargers last season than tailback Kareem Hunt.

Hunt ran for 327 yards in two games against Los Angeles in 2017 – the most the Chargers have allowed against a lone rusher during a single season in team history – but just like Reid, Offensive Coordinator Eric Bieniemy – who was Hunt’s positional coach last season - isn’t concerned with past performance.

“Every week and every team presents a different challenge. That was last year, and he had his success, but I’m sure they will be gearing up for him this season,” Bieniemy said. “We have to make sure we are dotting our I’s and crossing our T’s and making sure that we are geared up to go out there and do the things that we need to do in order to be effective.”

https://static.clubs.nfl.com/image/private/t_landscape_tablet/f_auto/chiefs/xejf0sgotsovwiemdf1u.jpg

Hunt’s effectiveness could very well open up things for the rest of the offense, which means getting the ball in the hands of playmakers Travis Kelce, Tyreek Hill and Sammy Watkins, among others.

“In this locker room, we know what we have here on offense,” Watkins said. “We have so many guys that can go out and catch the ball and a confidence that nobody really [knows about], so we can’t wait for Sunday to get here so that we can put on a show out there.”

And as Watkins and the Chiefs’ offense looks to do just that on Sunday, the defense will seek to prevent Chargers’ quarterback Philip Rivers from doing the same.

The 36-year-old Rivers was still as effective as ever at moving the ball for the Chargers in 2017, posting a 96.0 passer rating, but in two games against the Chiefs, that figure plummeted to a mark of just 42.9 with six interceptions to just one touchdown.

Furthermore, during the Chiefs’ eight-game winning streak over Los Angeles, Rivers has just a 66.2 passer rating against Kansas City while posting a 92.9 mark against the league overall in that span.

It’s a certain success that Defensive Coordinator Bob Sutton is hopeful to discover once again.

“I think what it comes down to when you play a guy like this, I don’t want to over simplify it, but you have to execute,” Sutton explained. “You have to execute at a high rate for an entire game…you can’t blink. You can pull out any video you have of this guy and he is going to make some plays that are really hard to make.”

https://static.clubs.nfl.com/image/private/t_landscape_tablet/f_auto/chiefs/ue9jw40afz2oo7i1jkkx.jpg

Rivers tends to funnel the bulk of those plays through one primary individual in wide receiver Keenan Allen, who hauled in 102 catches for 1,393 yards and six touchdowns in 2017. A frequent thorn in the Chiefs’ side over the years, Allen represents one of the more dynamic pass-catching threats in the league as a whole.

“He’s become their top receiver in terms of targets and he’s done a great job [in that role],” Sutton said. “He moves around a lot more now…and he’s really intense. He’s a high-level competitor who is really good at his craft, understands how to run routes and knows the defender and what he likes to do. He’s huge for them.”

Also key to the Chargers’ attack is tailback Melvin Gordon, who tallied the fifth-most yards from scrimmage in the NFL last season and presents a formidable test for a Chiefs’ defense that placed an emphasis on stopping the run all offseason long.

“He can do it all. He can run between the tackles, you can pitch it to him outside and he’ll outrun the corners and he can catch it out in the flat – he’s tough,” said linebacker Reggie Ragland. “He’s diverse, which makes it tough as a player, so we’ve just got to do the best that we can at containing him.”

https://static.clubs.nfl.com/image/private/t_landscape_tablet/f_auto/chiefs/dr24ehie29p8tbklqt9x.jpg

It all sets the stage for an exciting opening weekend of football as Kansas City begins its defense of the AFC West crown. It’s been a winding road of grueling practices and meticulous preparation that’s led to this point, and finally, the Chiefs are ready to let it all fly on Sunday.
“I’m just going out there and playing to win. I get to compete and play a sport that I love. I get to play with a lot of guys that I have built great relationships with,” Mahomes said. “I’m going to just go out there and have fun and, hopefully, win a football game.”
Mahomes and the Chiefs will aim to do just that on Sunday at 3:05 p.m. CT.

The Kansas City Chiefs begin their 2018 campaign on the road in a key divisional game against the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday afternoon. The game is set to kick off at 3:05 p.m. CT.

There is no shortage of storylines headed into this one either—from the Chiefs’ recent success against the Chargers, the debut of Patrick Mahomes as QB1, the fact that a couple of All-Pro defensive players on both teams are dealing with injuries, plus much more.

So, let’s take a look at some key matchups, a stat you might not know, the possible “x-factor,” plus a storyline and connection between players on both teams you haven’t yet heard about.

Here are five things to watch on Sunday during Chiefs-Chargers:

1. The key matchup for the Chiefs’ offense

For most intents and purposes, the Chargers’ defense is headlined by the pass-rushing duo of Joey Bosa and Melvin Ingram. They’re one of only two sets of edge rushers in the league who each had at least 29 quarterback hurries last season. The Philadelphia Eagles’ Brandon Graham and Chris Long are the other.

As Chiefs’ offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy told me this week, “We’re always going to be aware of where both of them are before each snap.”

They are both the right combination of athletic, strong, quick, and most of all, relentless. They combined for 23 sacks last season.

Although it’s important to note that Bosa was limited at practice for the Chargers on Wednesday with a foot injury, which occurred back on August 7. Then he didn’t practice at all on Thursday, which puts his status for Sunday’s game in question.

In any case, Bieniemy understands what they might be up against if they both do in fact play.

“I’m not taking anything away from the other guys on that team, but those two guys are pretty good,” BIeniemy intently added. “They are very good.”

But for the Chiefs’ offense, the key to slowing down the pass rush is going to be getting running back Kareem Hunt going again. He had success against the Chargers last year—accumulating 327 yards rushing in the two games they played, which is a franchise record for any running back against any opponent in a single season. It’s a big reason he went on to win the league’s rushing title.

Whether it’s running right at the pass rush, which is generally one way to slow them down, or simply establish that Bosa and Ingram must respect the run first while trying to stay out of as many obvious passing situations, the guys up front will dictate the action.

“We’ve got to move bodies off the line,” Chiefs’ left guard Andrew Wylie explained. “It opens up everything.”

2. The key matchup for the Chiefs’ defense

For the Chiefs’ defense, the obvious matchup is going to be slowing down Chargers’ quarterback Philip Rivers again on Sunday—something defensive coordinator Bob Sutton has had success with in the past.

In 10 games against Sutton, Rivers carries a 2-8 overall record and has tossed 14 interceptions to just 12 touchdowns, and carries a rating of just 76.3.

But that success doesn’t live in the front of the minds who are tasked with trying to do it again on Sunday.

“He’s an amazing guy. I was lucky enough to coach him in the Pro Bowl,” Chiefs’ coach Andy Reid explained of Rivers. “You can see why he’s been successful, he loves the game and he’s been blessed. He’s got talent, he grew up with it with his dad being a coach and he just kind of knows where everybody is at and keeps himself in good shape and plays. He’s fearless in there.”

The Chiefs found success against Rivers last year thanks in large part to the pressure they were able to get on him early and often.

In Week 15 at Arrowhead, Rivers was pressured on 13 of his 38 drop backs, and on those plays, completed just 5 of 11 for 83 yards and two interceptions, which came out to a quarterback rating of just 31.8.

Much of that pressure came up the middle, which didn’t allow Rivers, who is now 36 years old heading into Sunday’s game, a chance to step up in the pocket.

3. The key stat to know heading into Sunday’s game

The key stat to know for Sunday’s game also has to do with Rivers.

According to ESPN Stats and Information research, the Chargers are 5-15 over the past five seasons when Rivers turns the ball over at least two times in a game. They are 31-27 when he does not.

Against the Chiefs and Sutton in particular, Rivers is 1-7 when he turns it over even one time.

4. The X-Factor that could come into play

While Rivers is most-likely a future Hall of Famer, the Chiefs’ defense will be tested in the run game against the Chargers on Sunday as well.

It’s an area where they’ve had to answer questions all offseason and have been asked about it often. They allowed an average of 118.1 yards per game on the ground last year, which ranked 25th in the NFL.

And that test isn’t going to be easy on Sunday with the Chargers’ Melvin Gordon handling the duties carrying the ball. The third-year player accumulated 1,581 yards from scrimmage last season, which was the fifth-most in the NFL.

So, the defensive additions made this offseason by Chiefs’ general manager Brett Veach of guys like inside linebacker Anthony Hitchens, defensive lineman Xavier Williams, plus a couple of young drafted players in Derrick Nnadi and Breeland Speaks, the area was addressed.

“We’ve got to get the job done,” linebacker Reggie Ragland explained. “Do our best to get everybody lined up and doing everything right. I’m very comfortable with [Hitchens] and he’s very comfortable with me—even though we didn’t get many game reps (this preseason). We still have some things we got to clean, but for the most part I’m very comfortable playing beside a guy like that.”

Ragland and Hitchens only played one half of football next to each other this preseason (against the Bears) as they were both dealing with injuries, so they are the X-Factor in Sunday’s game against the Chargers because of the importance stopping the run has been all offseason, and also because getting after Rivers is much easier on third-and-7 than it is on third-and-2.

5. The storyline you probably don’t know

There isn’t a football website on the internet that probably hasn’t written about Patrick Mahomes over the past few months.

In fact, they’ve probably written a lot about him, and most people know he makes his debut as the Chiefs’ starting quarterback in a key road game against one of the best defenses in the NFL on Sunday.

But for Mahomes, the storylines don’t just end at the surface level stuff.

https://static.clubs.nfl.com/image/private/t_landscape_tablet/f_auto/chiefs/ebhicylv5y4z068zarme.jpg

The hype, impact of a divisional race, settling on a nickname (Showtime), and just the general curiosity from everyone on what the Texas gunslinger might do in his first action of 2018 when surrounded by such a litany of skill position players is intriguing enough.

But there’s another layer to Sunday’s game as well. On the opposite sideline will be a Chargers’ receiver who has known Mahomes longer than anyone else in that building that isn’t part of Mahomes’ family.

Dylan Cantrell—the Chargers’ young receiver who is currently on their practice squad, grew up in Texas with Mahomes, played football at Texas Tech with him, and now will be there to watch him take on his team in Week 1.

“It was in grade school,” Mahomes said of when he first met Cantrell. “The first memory I have of meeting him was when we played on a little league baseball team together called the “Rangers” in the Whitehouse (TX) Little League.

“Growing up, we played on the same baseball team, basketball team, and football team—once we got to high school (Whitehouse HS). We’ve always been around each other just competing with or against each other since we were little.”
In fact, Mahomes credits Cantrell, who is a year older than him, for helping him get to Texas Tech.

“[Cantrell] had already committed to Texas Tech, and the reason that I pretty much went there was that a scout was at one of our games (watching Cantrell), and I played well and then he began recruiting me,” Mahomes explained.

The scout at that game was Sunny Cumbie, who is now the offensive coordinator at TCU.

https://static.clubs.nfl.com/image/private/t_landscape_tablet/f_png/chiefs/eabotxqstysamnt2fds5.png

When asked of his top memories over the years of playing with Cantrell, who caught 158 passes for 1,873 yards with 18 touchdowns in his career at Texas Tech, Mahomes actually recalled a couple of games back in high school that really stood out.

“It’s really two plays, but I remember the first and second round of the state playoffs, we did the same thing where I scrambled to the right and went back and just threw it up and gave him a chance to catch it on a Hail Mary before halftime, and he caught both of them,” Mahomes smiled. “I’ll always remember those two plays.”

Mahomes said he and Cantrell were texting during training camp this year and that they’ll probably talk before and after Sunday’s game.

Cantrell, who was taken in the sixth round of the NFL Draft last Spring, was dealing with a bone bruise on his knee that kept him out of all of their preseason games, but reportedly had a really nice start to his camp.

“Just the fact that we’re both at this stage is pretty crazy,” Mahomes added. “Whenever you’re young, you dream of being at this stage and to think we’ve gone from little league baseball teams to the NFL is pretty crazy.

“But I’m excited for his future because he’s going to have a great one.”

Game Preview from ESPN.com (http://www.espn.com/nfl/preview?gameId=401030720)

Young vs. old at QB in Chargers-Chiefs matchup

The Kansas City Chiefs face many questions entering the 2018 season, but when it comes to the readiness of quarterback Patrick Mahomes to assume command of the team's offense, head coach Andy Reid has no doubts.

"I like his approach to the game," Reid said. "He's given himself an opportunity to be successful is what he's doing, and he's just got to go do it."

All eyes should focus on Mahomes in Week 1 as the Chiefs travel to Los Angeles to face the Chargers on Sunday. The matchup of what many believe are the top two contenders for the AFC West title provides the winner with a crucial leg up in a battle that came down to Week 16 a year ago.

With all the changes in the division, the Chargers look like the Rock of Gibraltar.

That is especially true at quarterback with Philip Rivers setting sail on his 15th season as he continues to climb the NFL's all-time lists in nearly every passing category. Combine him with a prudent running game led by Melvin Gordon and targets that include Pro Bowler Keenan Allen and recently signed Antonio Gates. It seems like a wealth of riches on that side of the ball.

The Chargers hope to pick right up where they left off after being one of the hottest teams to end last year by winning nine of their final 12 games. The Chargers know they blew a chance last year to reach the playoffs because of an 0-4 start. They are determined to start fast this year and it would be a bonus to also pin a loss on a division foe.

Meanwhile, the Chiefs have surrounded Mahomes with plenty of options on the field. Running back Kareem Hunt led the league in rushing a year ago and both receiver Tyreek Hill and tight end Travis Kelce topped 1,000 yards. That's just the fifth time in league history a team pulled off that trifecta. With wide receiver Sammy Watkins added to the group of playmakers, Mahomes should have plenty of offensive firepower.

He may need it, too. The defense ranked 29th against the pass and 25th against the run a year ago. A poor performance from the secondary in the preseason prompted the Chiefs to sign free-agent cornerback Orlando Scandrick. The club also placed safety Daniel Sorensen on injured reserve. Strong safety Eric Berry, who hasn't practiced since Aug. 11, might not play because of a sore heel.

Speaking of defense, the Chargers also have impact players there, especially on the line. Defensive ends Joey Bosa and Melvin Ingram supply a challenge to opposing quarterbacks and some believe first-round pick Derwin James, a safety, will have multiple Pro Bowls in his future.

It's the run defense that needed attention and it has gotten plenty with new faces and a new intensity. So far so good, but there are few areas which will be watched more closely.

From a game-plan standpoint, the Chiefs ran all over the Chargers a season ago, piling up 363 yards in two easy victories. Establishing the run early would allow Mahomes to settle into the offensive game plan.

On defense, the Chiefs will try to force turnovers because Rivers should be able to move the ball and put up points on a banged-up secondary with plenty of question marks. If the Chiefs find themselves in a shootout, expect Mahomes to work outside the pocket and use his big arm to force the ball deep.

While Rivers will certainly look to attack the Kansas City pass defense, running with Gordon will be important. It's unknown how much impact Gates will have, considering he didn't sign until after the cut to 53 players. Los Angeles lost starting tight end Hunter Henry to a torn ACL in the preseasons.

General manager Tom Telesco said, "He's coming back for all the right reasons. He's not coming back to put up more statistics. He's not coming back to prove anything to anybody because he doesn't have to do that. He's coming back because he loves his teammates and I think he sees something special in this football team and he wants to be a part of it."

This game will be a big test for the Chargers as they try to get off to a good start.

Four players to watch in the Chiefs-Chargers season-opener (https://www.kansascity.com/sports/nfl/kansas-city-chiefs/article218000960.html)

Here are four players to watch on Sunday in the Chiefs-Chargers opener at Los Angeles. Kickoff is at 3:05 p.m. Central time.

No. 17, QB Philip Rivers

36 years old, 6-5, 228 pounds, 15th season

The Chargers quarterback has lost eight in a row to the Chiefs, but that’s largely thanks to KC’s secondary. With that position in flux, Rivers could have more success this time around. Entering his 15th season in the NFL, Rivers is coming off of one of his best seasons. He threw 10 interceptions to 28 touchdowns last season, and this year he’ll also be bolstered by the return of tight end Antonio Gates. Rivers has thrown 87 touchdowns to Gates — the most ever for a quarterback-and-tight end pair. Because Gates was a late addition to the team, he may take limited snaps, but he’ll be a good security blanket for Rivers.

No. 33, S Derwin James

22 years old, 6-2, 215 pounds, 1st season

The rookie safety isn’t listed as the starter on the Chargers’ unofficial depth chart, but that doesn’t mean he won’t see the field on Sunday. Pro Football Focus graded James’ preseason as the fifth-best out of the 2018 first-round draft picks. He started the third preseason game and intercepted Drew Brees on the Saints’ opening drive. He’s a versatile talent and he has the ability to lineup at free safety, strong safety and weak-side linebacker in some packages. He could end up going against tight end Travis Kelce frequently, making for a pretty fun battle to keep an eye on.

No. 27, RB Kareem Hunt

23 years old, 5-11, 216 pounds, 2nd season

Hunt had his two best rushing games of his breakout rookie season against the Chargers. In the first, Hunt ran for 172 yards and averaged a whopping 10.12 yards per carry. In the next, Hunt ran for 155 yards and 6.46 yards per carry. This time around, he won’t be able to take teams by surprise. He’s entering his second season in the NFL, and there’s plenty of tape on him. Will that matter or will he be able to run all over the Chargers again? With a rookie quarterback, establishing the run game will be crucial for the Chiefs, and Hunt’s success could dictate the outcome.

No. 23, CB Kendall Fuller

23 years old, 5-11, 198 pounds, 3rd season

Rivers struggled last season against Marcus Peters, throwing six interceptions total in two games against the Chiefs. With Peters gone, the Chiefs have to get takeaways from somewhere else ... and offseason acquisition Fuller could be the guy to do it. The cornerback, who had four interceptions with Washington last season, primarily plays on the inside, but coach Andy Reid didn’t rule out the possibility of moving him to the outside. He also said that the Chiefs will have a third corner on the field at least 70 percent of the time. For the Chiefs to win, Fuller will need to be a major factor in creating turnovers.

I don't have REAL high hopes for this game. Everyone is picking against the Chiefs and out defense hasn't looked good so far. But we always seem to play well against the Bolts and you can never really tell what a team is going to be like from the preseason. I'm guessing lots of points and scoring is fun, right?

Go Chiefs!

The Chiefs are now Patrick Mahomes' team,
but this is a tough road start against a good
pass-rushing team. The Chargers will get
after Mahomes and force a couple of turnovers
that Philip Rivers will turn into points. Chargers
take it. The Chiefs have defensive issues as well.

Chargers 30
Chiefs 20
