Notable Quotables:
Chiefs:

“Obviously, you don’t want to be dead last in yardage. But yardage really isn’t a barometer ... From a defensive standpoint, your first thing is what affects points. So, if you are doing one stat and you said, ‘Hey, what do you want to be judged on?’ It would be points. That’s the best way we can help our team win when we limit points.”

--Chiefs Defensive Coordinator Bob Sutton

Jaguars:

“Obviously this is going to be a great challenge against this team. It’s a great football team we’re playing, and we’re playing them in their home stadium, which is one of the toughest places to play in the league. There’s a lot going on. We have to get ourselves ready and we have to get ourselves focused”

--Jaguars Head Coach Doug Marrone

What a first quarter of the season it’s been for the Kansas City Chiefs.

There was wide receiver Tyreek Hill’s 91-yard dash to the end zone in Los Angeles, quarterback Patrick Mahomes’ six-touchdown performance against Pittsburgh, the monstrous first half versus San Francisco and the unforgettable comeback at Mile High.

Collectively, the offense piled up the most points through four games in franchise history behind Mahomes’ record-setting arm, leading the Chiefs to one of just two unblemished records remaining in the league.

https://static.clubs.nfl.com/image/private/t_editorial_landscape_12_desktop/f_auto/chiefs/qnd8n9ahvjoi1gjhph2k.jpg

They’ve simply been the toast of the AFC through four weeks this season, and on Sunday, they’ll face their toughest task yet.

The Jacksonville Jaguars venture to Arrowhead Stadium this weekend with the league’s top defense in tow, matching up with Kansas City’s high-powered offense in a number of ways.

Mahomes, for example, has found the end zone a league-high 14 times through the air this season, while the Jaguars have allowed the fewest passing touchdowns (3) of any team in the league.

Kansas City has connected on the most passing plays of at least 25 yards in the NFL (15), while Jacksonville has yielded the least such plays (3).

And, ultimately, the Chiefs are scoring a league-high 36.3 points per game while – of course – the Jaguars are allowing a league-low 14.0.

It has all the makings of a classic matchup - pitting the two best units in the NFL against one another.

“They don’t have a lot of weaknesses,” Head Coach Andy Reid said of the Jaguars. “They have good players - starting right up front all the way to the back end and everywhere in between. They’re a good football team. You love the challenge of playing against a team like this.”

https://static.clubs.nfl.com/image/private/t_editorial_landscape_12_desktop/f_auto/chiefs/pmiczkemitdudyezuy3p.jpg

That challenge begins in the trenches - which it so often does - as the Chiefs’ offensive line combats a fearsome defensive front that’s loaded with playmakers.

The trio of defensive ends Calais Campbell, Yannick Ngakoue and Dante Fowler Jr. combined for 34.5 sacks a year ago, while defensive tackles Malik Jackson and Marcell Dareus create a stout duo up the middle.

It’s a formidable bunch, crafting an intriguing matchup with a Chiefs’ offensive line that’s yielded the fewest sacks in the NFL (5).

“Pat’s been doing a great job of getting the ball out [quickly] and working within the rhythm of the offense – everything is so based on timing,” said offensive tackle Mitchell Schwartz. “If something breaks down, it always seems like he’s scrambling or finding the open lane - and not really doing that to run, but to pass. A lot of [our success] is a credit to him and to the receivers for getting open.”

The Chiefs’ pass-catchers will look to find that same separation on Sunday against arguably the best secondary in the league.

Led by Pro Bowl cornerbacks Jalen Ramsey and A.J. Bouye, the Jaguars have allowed the fewest passing yards per game (164.3) in the NFL this season, holding the opposition to under 300 yards through the air in 15 consecutive regular-season games dating back to 2017.

“They have a great scheme and they do a lot of things really well. They do a lot of the same stuff, but they do it at a very high [level],” Mahomes said. “They have a ton of talent over there, we just have to utilize our offense and our weapons and try to do what we can to attack them.”

https://static.clubs.nfl.com/image/private/t_editorial_landscape_12_desktop/f_auto/chiefs/na7v50w0xzrdlbmjc53l.jpg

Those weapons include running back Kareem Hunt, who put together his best game of the season in last Monday night’s victory over the Denver Broncos. Hunt tallied 175 yards of total offense in the contest, plunging into the end zone to give Kansas City the lead with just over a minute remaining in the game.

“He had great production. I know the numbers haven’t shown it, but he hasn’t changed,” said Offensive Coordinator Eric Bieniemy. “He’s been running his butt off and working his butt off. Good things come to those who prepare and work as he does.”

Hunt’s performance was critical to the Chiefs’ offensive success against a historically tough Broncos’ defense last week, and his ability to move the chains on Sunday could prove just as vital.

https://static.clubs.nfl.com/image/private/t_editorial_landscape_12_desktop/f_auto/chiefs/unvvok5j5x60aa015au6.jpg

On the other side of the ball, the Chiefs will look to slow down quarterback Blake Bortles and the Jaguars’ offense, which has been inconsistent through four games this season.

Bortles - the No. 3 overall pick in the 2014 Draft - posted a 67.2 passer rating in Jacksonville’s season-opener before slinging four touchdowns against the New England Patriots the following week. He struggled again seven days later, leading the Jaguars to just six points in a loss to Tennessee, but rebounded to throw for 388 yards last week against the New York Jets.

Nonetheless, the 26-year-old signal caller has demonstrated an ability to lead the Jaguars' offense to a 3-1 start.

Bortles has a trio of impressive receivers at his disposal to move the ball in Dede Westbrook (294 yards), Keelan Cole (225 yards) and Donte Moncrief (173 yards), though he’ll be without starting running back Leonard Fournette on Sunday.

The former first-round pick aggravated a nagging hamstring injury last week and won’t suit up this weekend, giving way to fellow running back T.J. Yeldon to carry the load on the ground.

Though while technically the backup, the fourth-year tailback has picked up 205 yards on 49 carries this season while catching 14 passes for another 125 yards and two touchdowns, establishing himself as a playmaker in Fournette’s stead.

“T.J. is physical. He has good feet, and I don’t think a lot of people really understand how quick he is,” said linebacker Reggie Ragland, who played with Yeldon at the University of Alabama. “He runs high, but he’s still quick and can run fast. We have to do a good job of tackling – we can’t let him out.”

https://static.clubs.nfl.com/image/private/t_editorial_landscape_12_desktop/f_auto/chiefs/ruawb1h3jvv0mdbjpuf7.jpg

It all wraps up into a compelling matchup between two of the AFC’s very best teams in in front of what promises to be a raucous crowd at Arrowhead Stadium, where Kansas City has won 18 of its last 22 games.

It’s the kind of game that makes the National Football League so special.

“[They're] a well-rounded football team and that’s why we’re in this,” Reid said. “You work a lot of hours as coaches and players to have an opportunity like this.”

The Chiefs will try to seize that opportunity on Sunday with their perfect record on the line. Catch the game on CBS (KCTV5 local) and 101.1 The Fox.

No. 1 'D' tackles No. 1 scoring offense as Jaguars visit Chiefs

At the quarter-pole of the NFL season, no one has been able to slow Patrick Mahomes and the high-flying Kansas City Chiefs.

One of two undefeated teams in the NFL, the Chiefs (4-0) will try to remain perfect when they host the Jacksonville Jaguars (3-1) on Sunday in what shapes up as a classic matchup -- an explosive offense versus an unyielding defense.

Behind Mahomes, the early leader in the clubhouse for league Most Valuable Player honors, Kansas City features the NFL's top-ranked scoring offense, averaging a robust 36.3 points.

"Right now, he is playing better than any quarterback has ever played. He is an MVP quarterback," Jacksonville head coach Doug Marrone said of Mahomes. "The question is what he can't do. I don't know. I don't think words can really put in perspective how great he is playing. That is really all there is to it. He gives you challenges every which way whether you put him in the pocket (or not). He can make every throw."

The next challenge for Mahomes and the Chiefs are the Jaguars, who boast the NFL's No. 1 scoring defense at 14.0 points per game and the league's No. 1 total defense, holding opponents to an average of 259.3 total net yards.

"For us, they have a ton of talent over there, but we've got to utilize our offense and our weapons and try to do what we can to attack them," Mahomes said.

While Kansas City tops the league in total touchdowns (19), Jacksonville has allowed an NFL-low four this season -- the fewest through four games in franchise history. The Jaguars are the only team that has not allowed a first-half touchdown.

"This is by far the best defense we have faced," said Chiefs wide receiver Tyreek Hill, who is relishing his matchup against Jacksonville Pro Bowl cornerback Jalen Ramsey. "Obviously he thinks high of his self. ... I can't wait to line up against him and I hope he presses me."

Mahomes rallied Kansas City from a 10-point fourth-quarter deficit in Monday night's 27-23 win at Denver, leading the Chiefs to a pair of touchdowns in the final 6 1/2 minutes. He has 14 touchdown passes against no interceptions and became the first quarterback in league history to throw 13 scoring passes in the first three games of a season.

"He makes quick decisions. You get him out of the pocket and he can extend plays. He is athletic enough to run and run for a long way and take it to the house," said Marrone. "He has great command, and he has great weapons around him and an outstanding offensive line. Right now, offensively, what you're seeing is that it's kind of unbelievable, which is going to be a great challenge.

"We have our hands full. You are talking about someone that is a combination of a lot of the greatest players that ever played that position with the way he is playing."

Hill and tight end Travis Kelce are the favorite targets of Mahomes, leading the team with 23 receptions and three touchdowns apiece. Running back Kareem Hunt, who led the league in rushing in 2017, finally broke out with a season-high 121 yards and a touchdown on 19 carries against the Broncos.

That presents myriad problems for a Jacksonville defense that limited the New York Jets to 144 passing yards and just 34 yards on the ground in last week's 31-12 victory. The Jaguars have permitted a league-low 12 points in the first half.

Still, despite the defensive prowess, Jacksonville quarterback Blake Bortles knows his team cannot rely on the defense to completely shackle Mahomes and the Chiefs.

The Jaguars will again be without star running back Leonard Fournette, who aggravated a hamstring injury in last week's win and already has been ruled out against the Chiefs. T.J. Yeldon will get the start in his place.

Bortles withstood the absence of Fournette by throwing for a career-high 388 yards to go with two touchdowns last week, including a 67-yard scoring strike to Donte Moncrief. He bettered his previous best of 382 at San Francisco last year and his season high of 376 against New England in Week 2.

"We will have to be sharp. We will have to make sure we do not hurt ourselves," Bortles said. "We will have to make sure we are poised and handling a hostile environment. We all know how loud it is going to be. That place will be rocking, so it will be fun and a challenge."

Keys to victory: Chiefs cannot be completely
one-dimensional against Jaguars’ defense
From The Kansas City Star (https://www.kansascity.com/sports/nfl/kansas-city-chiefs/article219575485.html)

BY LYNN WORTHY
lworthy@kcstar.com

The Kansas City Chiefs (4-0) face their toughest test to date this season when they play host to the Jacksonville Jaguars (3-1) at Arrowhead Stadium on Sunday.

The Jaguars, current co-leaders in the AFC South division, advanced to last season’s AFC Championship game before falling to the New England Patriots.

Four keys to victory

1. Balance: The Chiefs cannot afford to be one-dimensional against the Jaguars. Without running back Kareem Hunt against Denver, the offense would have been fairly non-existent on Monday night. The Jaguars will be much tougher, particularly against the pass. The Jaguars ranks first in the NFL in pass defense, and they have allowed just one 300-yard passing game since the start of the 2017 season.

2. Sustain drives: The Jaguars’ defense is one of the best in squelching opponents’ drives quickly and getting off of the field. On what’s expected to be a rainy day in Kansas City, getting more possessions could be a difference-maker for the Jaguars’ offense. The Jags allow the fewest points per drive in the league and have the best defensive success rate (DSR) as measured by Football Outsiders. Only 58 percent of opponents’ overall series of downs end in either a first down or touchdown.

3. Win first down: Jaguars quarterback Blake Bortles has posted a 64.2 quarterback rating this season, which ranks 12th in the NFL. However, he has enjoyed marked success on first down. Bortles’ quarterback rating on first down jumps to 116.9, the fifth-best in the league. Winning first down will be crucial to keeping the Jaguars from dominating time of possession and limiting their scoring opportunities.

4. Convert in the red zone: The Chiefs’ offense has been the second-best in the league at converting red-zone possessions into points (82.4 percent) this season. Meanwhile, the Jaguars’ defense has been the second-stingiest in the league in regard to allowing points when opponents get into the red zone (25 percent). Against a defense like the Jaguars’, which has allowed an average of just 14 points per game, empty red-zone trips could doom the Chiefs’ chances.

Keep an eye on Jalen Ramsey and these other players in Chiefs-Jaguars game on Sunday

The Chiefs will face one of the league’s toughest defensive teams on Sunday. Here’s who you should be watching when the Chiefs and the Jaguars take the field.

No. 20 Jalen Ramsey, CB
23 years old, 6-1, 208 pounds, 3rd season

Ramsey threw down the gauntlet when he pointed out that Tyreek Hill made the Pro Bowl as a punt returner — not a wide receiver. The Cheetah probably isn’t going to take too kindly to those words, so look for some major fireworks in this matchup. Hill also challenged Ramsey to press him earlier in the week. Anchored by Ramsey, the Jaguars’ defense has given up just 164 passing yards per game, second-best in the NFL. Ramsey doesn’t have an interception this season, and Mahomes hasn’t thrown one. Is Ramsey going to be the guy who ends that streak?

No. 24 TJ Yeldon, RB
25 years old, 6-1, 223 pounds, 4th season

With Leonard Fournette out, the Jaguars’ run game will go through Yeldon. With near-certain rain in the forecast, Yeldon will be even more important for the Jaguars. Through four games this year, Yeldon has 205 yards on 49 carries and one touchdown. He also has 14 receptions for 125 yards and two touchdowns. Against the Jets, Yeldon had a season-high 18 carries for 52 yards and a rushing touchdown. He also caught touchdown pass from quarterback Blake Bortles in the Jaguars’ 31-12 win against the Jets. Though Yeldon is expected to play Sunday, he has been dealing with an ankle injury that limited him in practice throughout the week.

No. 15 Patrick Mahomes, QB
23 years old, 6-3, 230 pounds, 2nd season

If you’re not watching the Chiefs’ quarterback, what are you even doing? Mahomes has been stellar through his first four weeks, throwing 14 touchdowns and no interceptions. That’s why he won the AFC Player of the Month for September. The Broncos, ranked 16th in total defense, were the toughest defensive challenge he’s faced so far. Before that, the Chiefs faced No. 28 Pittsburgh, the No. 21 L.A. Chargers and No. 18 San Francisco. Mahomes struggled in the first half against the Broncos, but he found his groove after halftime and led a game-winning drive in the fourth quarter thanks to the left-handed throw heard ‘round the world. This weekend, he’ll not only have to face the Jaguars’ defense, but he’ll have to do it in the rain.

No. 53 Anthony Hitchens, ILB
26 years old, 6-0, 235 pounds, 5th season

Inside linebacker Anthony Hitchens started off his first season as a Chief with a bang, leading the team with 14 tackles against the Chargers. The next week, he led again with 12 against Pittsburgh. But his production has drastically dropped off in the last two games. He tallied just three tackles against the Broncos, and he was dragged into the end zone by Royce Freeman as the running back ran through three tackles to score. With a rainy afternoon in store for Sunday’s game, the Jaguars will likely rely on the run game. If Monday’s game against the Broncos is any indication, Jacksonville could find plenty of success unless Hitchens and his fellow inside linebackers step up.

TopekaRoy
10-07-2018, 02:17 PM

10-07-2018, 02:35 PM
Defense has to come out in the 2nd half and play like it's still 0-0.

And so does the offense!

This is the game of the week. Watching Chiefs
quarterback Patrick Mahomes against the
Jaguars defense will be a treat. Mahomes

Jaguars defensive backs don’t have one. That

Why am i tearing up? Because once again i am seeing my chiefs going to and winning a superbowl. I need to check myself! I was the same way with so many chiefs teams joe, trent and alex all gave me so much hope.. i cannot let myself keep getting so emotionally vested. My wife says every year, im 46 fyi youll die from a heart attack watching your team.. please God let us win a superbowl in my adult lifetime.

Hey Pro great to see you around

This team is fun we might not win it all this year but the hope is high for the next few for sure.

Ive bern around guys. Im just trying not to be my emotional self. You all know me im no bandwaganer. I just dont want to get so emotionally vested just to be let down again. Ive not beenna huge fan of Patrick and i still believe rightfully so. He has a bright future. If we coukd only for one year before i die have a goid offense and defense.. long live the Chiefs and long live Chiefs Crowd.
