It was a game that fans of the Kansas City Chiefs won’t soon forget.

On a night meant to celebrate the New England Patriots’ victory in Super Bowl LI, it was the Chiefs that brought the fireworks as Kansas City found the end zone six times and dealt quarterback Tom Brady his worst loss at home since 2005.

Chiefs’ running back Kareem Hunt tallied the most yards from scrimmage (246) in a professional debut in NFL history while wide receiver Tyreek Hill hauled in seven catches for 133 yards in the victory, helping Kansas City rack up its most yards from scrimmage in 11 years.

https://static.clubs.nfl.com/image/private/t_landscape_tablet/f_auto/chiefs/rckoffqcth0bjxmocvxr.jpg

That memorable evening was just over 400 days ago, and on Sunday, the Chiefs will take the field under the lights in Foxboro yet again.

Kansas City enters this weekend’s contest with an unblemished record, standing alone as the only undefeated team in the AFC and one of just two remaining in the league overall, joining the Los Angeles Rams.

It’s taken a little bit of everything to get to this point - from quarterback Patrick Mahomes’ six touchdowns in Week 2 to the defense’s five takeaways in Week 5 – ultimately resulting in a 5-0 start to the year for a second-consecutive season.

And on Sunday, the Chiefs will look to preserve that perfect record against the league’s most successful team over the past two decades.

The numbers speak for themselves, as New England has played in eight Super Bowls since 2001, hoisting the Lombardi Trophy five times. Moreover, the Patriots have at least reached the AFC Championship Game in each of the last seven seasons and 12 times in the last 17 years overall.

For context, when New England won its first title in 2001, Mahomes was just six years old.

“Their success is well-documented,” said Head Coach Andy Reid. “[Head Coach] Bill [Belichick] is phenomenal in the job that he does – and especially to be able to sustain it for this many years as he has. They have a heck of a football team.”

New England is simply the team to beat in the AFC year in and year out, and following offensive explosions in each of the past two weeks, the Patriots remain a rigorous hurdle in Kansas City’s pursuit of the top spot in the conference.

At the center of New England’s success this season has been Brady, who’s still playing with the best of them in his 19th professional season. The 41-year-old signal caller owns a 96.1 passer rating on the year, tossing at least three touchdowns in three of New England’s five games.

“We always talk about his preparation and his ability to execute out there because of that, but he’s in such great command [of their offense],” said Defensive Coordinator Bob Sutton. “I don’t know how many quarterbacks have been in the exact same system for 19 years – that just doesn’t happen very often. It’s an incredible thing…He knows that system remarkably well and can manipulate it to whatever he wants.”

https://static.clubs.nfl.com/image/private/t_landscape_tablet/f_auto/chiefs/s2h6ex6z6bnnjcayapal.jpg

Brady’s top weapons through the air this season have been All-Pro tight end Rob Gronkowski (23 catches for 308 yards; 1 touchdown) and versatile tailback James White (32 catches for 270 yards; 4 touchdowns), with Gronkowski existing as one of the toughest defensive matchups in the NFL.

“Gronkowski is so unique. He’s such a big guy with gigantic hands, so he can catch just about anything you throw at him,” Sutton said. “He really understands how to get open and he and Brady have a connection going between them where they trust each other…You have to double-cover him a lot of the time, but that doesn’t mean that Brady won’t throw to him.”

https://static.clubs.nfl.com/image/private/t_landscape_tablet/f_auto/chiefs/yyrlzogsfaz4pl3wp9py.jpg

New England’s offensive attack also features former All-Pro wide receiver Josh Gordon, who the Patriots acquired from Cleveland prior to Week 4, and veteran wideout Julian Edelman – one of Brady’s favorite targets over the years - who made his season-debut last week following a four-game suspension.

And that’s not to mention wide receivers Phillip Dorsett, Chris Hogan and Cordarrelle Patterson, who each have multiple touchdown catches on the year, and tailback Sony Michel, who’s averaging 4.39 yards per carry on the ground.

It’s an offensive arsenal that creates a formidable challenge for Kansas City’s defense that’s fresh off their top performance of the season.

The Chiefs forced five turnovers in last weekend’s victory over Jacksonville, sacking quarterback Blake Bortles five times and holding the Jaguars scoreless until late in the third quarter.

https://static.clubs.nfl.com/image/private/t_landscape_tablet/f_auto/chiefs/gf36id9ktglfcduvpsf9.jpg

It was Kansas City’s ability to hold firm in the red zone that really made the difference on Sunday – yielding just one touchdown in five tries – and a similar effort would certainly come in handy against the league’s sixth-best red zone offense in New England.

Of course, as dynamic as New England’s offense has been historically – and in each of the last two weeks, when they’ve scored exactly 38 points twice - the Chiefs feature some offensive firepower of their own.

Kansas City has piled up the most points through five weeks in franchise history, finding the end zone a league-high 4.40 times per game behind the right arm of Mahomes, whose 14 touchdown passes lead the NFL.

https://static.clubs.nfl.com/image/private/t_landscape_tablet/f_auto/chiefs/dz3015nqoglp8b8fr5tl.jpg

It all creates an intriguing matchup on Sunday between Reid – one of the game’s greatest offensive minds – and Belichick, whose ability to scheme defensively is among the best in league history.

Belichick is known for schematically taking away a team’s top options on offense with great success, forcing other players to step up when it counts.

“He is going to form-fit the defense to your offense and do what he feels is best there - it might be completely different from the week before,” Reid explained. “He’s done a great job of that over the years.”

It presents a challenge for Reid and his 23-year-old quarterback, but Mahomes has no lack of playmakers at his disposal.

“They are going to have a game plan [that’s going to] try and stop some of our better guys, but with us, I feel like the mentality that we’ve had this entire season is that whoever is open, give them the ball and let them make the play. [That] is going to help us out a ton,” Mahomes explained. “They’re going to do some stuff to try and confuse me, but I’m going to try to maintain our game plan and just keep working.”

The numbers back up that mindset, as nine players have already caught a touchdown for Kansas City this season. Mahomes has been spreading the ball around, and it’s worked.

The Chiefs’ young signal caller will try and replicate that success yet again on Sunday against a New England team that’s been a model of success over the years in pursuit of a sixth victory in as many weeks.

“When you play in this league, you want to play against the best, and they’ve been one of the best for a long time,” Mahomes said. “It’s an awesome opportunity to go up against them and see what we can do.”

The Chiefs will have that very chance with the nation watching on Sunday night at 7:20 p.m. CT.

Game Preview from ESPN.com (http://www.espn.com/nfl/game?gameId=401030779)

High-profile quarterbacks matched up in Patriots-Chiefs game

Tom Brady, the New England Patriots' 41-year-old quarterback, is the reigning MVP, has thrown 500 touchdown passes, has won five Super Bowls and will be looking to become the first quarterback to win 200 regular-season games in Sunday night's game against the Kansas City Chiefs in Foxborough, Mass.

Yet he will share the spotlight with Kansas City's 23-year-old quarterback, Patrick Mahomes, who has started just six NFL games in his career.

Mahomes has thrown a league-leading 14 touchdown passes with just two interceptions this season while leading the Chiefs to a 5-0 start and directing an offense that averages 35.0 points per game, which ranks second in the NFL.

Brady has 12 touchdown passes with six interceptions for the Patriots, who are 3-2 and rank tied for ninth in scoring at 26.6 points per contest.

"I was a Cowboys fan when I was younger," Mahomes said, "so being from Texas, I wasn't necessarily a fan of him winning all the time. But you definitely respected his game and how he played. When you have that much success, it takes a bunch of hard work, so you respect that."

When Brady won his first Super Bowl, Mahomes was just 6 years old.

"I don't really remember those first few Super Bowls that he won," Mahomes said. "I remember the Super Bowl, the snow game and them kicking the field goal to win. But not until I got older and just seeing his successes year in and year out as I've gotten older, it is truly special to see all of that hard work pay off."

Mahomes ranks third-best in the Super Bowl era with 1,797 yards passing in his first six career games. His 14 touchdown passes rank tied for fourth.

"He can throw it, run it, does a good job of reading coverages, gets the ball to his playmakers in space and creates space for them so they can make a lot of plays," Patriots head coach Bill Belichick said.

Chiefs head coach Andy Reid knows Belichick will come up with looks Mahomes hasn't seen on film..

"He's the best at that," Reid said of Belichick. "He mixes and matches, and he does that whole thing. He can change up and give you a completely different look one week than the other. So you make sure that you've got plays that are good versus all and you go in and you play."

There is a comparison at another key position: tight end.

Former Cowboys tight end and current ESPN Monday Night Football analyst Jason Witten said Kansas City's Travis Kelce is the best tight end in football, not the Patriots' Rob Gronkowski.

"Yeah, I mean, on my list, I would rank Kelce the best tight end in football. I know Gronk has been a great tight end for a long time. But, I mean, I haven't gotten to play with Gronk. I've gotten to play with Kelce, and I've never seen anyone be able to do the things that he's done," Mahomes said.

Gronkowski has 23 receptions, but that is only second on the team to running back James White, who has caught 32 passes for 270 yards and four touchdowns. White has also rushed for 110 yards, although New England's main rushing threat the past two games has been rookie Sony Michel, who gained 210 yards in consecutive wins over Miami and Indiana.

The main receiving threat for the Chiefs is Tyreek Hill, who has 27 receptions, nine of which have gone for more than 20 yards.

"Whoever the fastest player on anybody's team is probably isn't as fast as Hill," Belichick said.

Hill had seven catches for 133 yards and a touchdown in the Chiefs' 42-27 victory over the Patriots in last year's season opener.

The Chiefs started 5-0 last season and limped to the finish line with a 10-6 record that earned them a wild-card berth before losing their postseason opener to the Tennessee Titans.

The game against New England might indicate whether Kansas City will repeat that slide.

Belichick says the Chiefs' undefeated start this season is a result of their ability to jump out to early leads. However, he also notes they came from behind to beat Denver in Week 4.

"They've killed teams in the first quarter," Belichick said, referencing Kansas City's 59-9 advantage in the first quarter of games this season. "It looks like they can play in any situation they're in. That's why they're as good of a football team as there is in the National Football League right now. They're good at everything."

Reid won two out of three matchups against Belichick and the Patriots during his first five seasons in Kansas City.

The Chiefs will probably be without linebacker Justin Houston (hamstring) and safety Eric Berry (heel). Berry has yet to play this season.

Fast start key vs Chiefs D

by Erik Scalavino
Patriots Football Weekly
Wednesday, Oct 10, 2018 06:08 PM

https://static.clubs.nfl.com/image/private/t_editorial_landscape_12_desktop/f_auto/patriots/zytgcckxbqnhivbel6w4.jpg

While Kansas City’s offense makes all the headlines, its defense has taken a less prominent public role in the Chiefs’ 5-0 start to 2018. That doesn’t mean, however, that the Patriots are taking them lightly.

Even though K.C. has been allowing an average of about 26 points per game to opposing offenses, the Chiefs’ D has also intercepted six passes, recovered a pair of fumbles, and sacked the quarterback 15 times. Outside linebackers Dee Ford and Justin Houston (who’s dealing with a hamstring injury), along with defensive end Allen Bailey, are responsible for the majority of those QB takedowns.

“It’s a great team. Their defense plays extremely well, they move to the ball well,” observed rookie running back Sony Michel. “It’s going to be a good challenge for us. I’m excited.”

“They have a really good pass rush. They have a lot of good players,” wide receiver Phillip Dorsett told reporters Wednesday after practice. “Those two guys on the outside [Ford and Houston] can really rush the passer. They’re really good [as a defense] at turning over the ball. They get you in third-and-long [situations], so, they can let those pass rushers come at you.”

So, how do the Patriots think they can counter this potentially underrated Chiefs defense?

“It’ll be a good matchup for us. We have to start fast offensively and be able to score points,” observed running back/co-captain James White.

“We have to start fast and be good on first and second downs,” added Dorsett. “We have to execute. Receivers have to get off press coverage, catch the ball. Everybody has to do their part. We know it’s going to be a challenge. I just can’t wait to get out there and play.”

Simulating Mahomes

As we discussed yesterday, second-year Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes is drawing raves for the way he’s played so far this season. Replicating his rare skill set of athleticism and arm strength in practice is nearly impossible for any opponent. It would make sense if New England used practice squad rookie Danny Etling as their scout-team Mahomes in workouts this week, as he is the closest approximation they have on the roster to Mahomes’ youth, speed, and throwing velocity.

When asked if he was playing Mahomes in practice, backup QB Brian Hoyer acknowledged that he’s not watching film of the Chiefs’ offense, but answered questions about playing a scout-team QB by saying, “It’s always fun for me to emulate a different offense, because, whether it’s read-option or RPOs, it’s always an opportunity to get better as a quarterback. I always take that challenge and I’m always trying to give the defense the best look.”

Practice Report

For the second straight day, New England practiced all 63 players, including the 10-man practice squad. Several players were limited by injuries, including Michel, who’s back on the injury report with a knee issue. He spoke at length to the media after practice today, however, which is normally an encouraging sign that a player isn’t in too bad a condition physically.

Supporting the Sox

When the Patriots host Kansas City Sunday night, they’ll be kicking off about an hour after the Boston Red Sox get underway with Game 2 of the American League Championship Series against the Houston Astros.

“I’m happy for them. Keep it going,” cornerback Stephon Gilmore said of the Sox’ advancement in the MLB playoffs after beating the New York Yankees.

“Actually, I was in New York over the weekend and I was watching,” Dorsett revealed.

But how is a New England sports fan to decide what to watch this Sunday?

“Buy some TVs. Watch both,” Dorsett suggested.

“Get two TVs,” echoed Gilmore.

“If it were me, I’d be watching football,” center/co-captain David Andrews proclaimed, completely unbiased, “but yeah, get two TVs.”

To be honest I didn't think we'd be 5-0 at this point, so I'll give Pete that much. It's ironic that he picked a team that he tends to rag on as the 2nd best team in the NFL. Guess he's having to do a slow mental U-turn because of Mahomes' popularity in the league.

This is the best team the Chiefs will play all season, so a win tonight would be huge. A loss wouldn't be the end of the World, though. The Chiefs could still go 12-4 or 13-3 and get the #1 seed.

Of course, I would rather see a win but I just want to see continued improvement from the Defense and get out of there withouut any more significant injuries.

Andy seems to have the Pats number, though, and the Chiefs have won two of he last three match-ups, so you never know what is going to happen.

He's going to have games like this. Happens to every QB. Part of the growing. It's just how well he learns

Eydugstr
10-14-2018, 09:23 PM

matthewschiefs
10-14-2018, 09:24 PM
Why are we dropping Dee Ford back in coverage?

We do it all the time with our pass rushers. It gets beat all the time yet we keep doing it

2010chiefs
10-14-2018, 09:27 PM
If there’s no pressure on Brady, he will pick you apart. Unless we outscore them we can’t win like this.

Eydugstr
10-14-2018, 09:28 PM
We should've seen that coming

Eydugstr
10-14-2018, 09:28 PM

TopekaRoy
10-14-2018, 09:37 PM
Don't make too big a deal out of this game. It's just one game and we don't play the Patriots every week.

The injuries to our defense and the home filed advantage may be too much to overcome, but our offense can score quickly. There is still a long way to go.

Chiefs4life24
10-14-2018, 09:37 PM

Pat isn't used to playing from behind. He is trying to force the ball into places were it won't fit.

Eydugstr
10-14-2018, 09:52 PM
We can still take this game back. If we settle down and quit dropping the ball we'll be back in it.
