Notable Quotables:
Chiefs:
“[T]hey have a ton of talented players ... They have a great defensive line that can really rush the passer and they know how to get turnovers, I mean, they go for the strips, they go for the interceptions. For us, it’s about staying within our game, playing the game we’ve been playing this entire season, not trying to force anything and just trying to put some points on the board.”
--Chiefs Quarterback Patrick Mahomes
Browns:
“I know our defense is going to have a great plan and give us some opportunities. They have players up front on defense, too ... It’s not an easy matchup by far but I think we have a good game plan on both sides of the ball. We’re going to try to keep up with them. They score a lot of points and we’re going to try to be right there with them.”

The Browns made a coaching change,
firing Hugh Jackson and making Gregg
Williams the interim coach. That could
help give the Browns some life, but
this is a brutal way for Williams to get
his Browns coaching career going.
Patrick Mahomes can light it up. Look
for Williams to blitz him a bunch, but
Mahomes will get this best of this game.

It was almost exactly two years ago that these two quarterbacks set the college football universe ablaze.
In a showdown for the ages between Texas Tech and the University of Oklahoma, the Red Raiders’ Patrick Mahomes and the Sooners’ Baker Mayfield combined for an NCAA-record 1,279 passing yards and 14 total touchdowns, with Oklahoma eventually emerging victorious by a score of 66-59.
It was simply an incredible display of offense by two quarterbacks destined to play on Sundays.
“There were a lot of talented people on the field,” Mahomes recalled. “It was one of those Big 12 shootouts, and if you look at the rosters, there are a lot of players [from that game] that are in the NFL now. I wish we would have won, but just being a part of something like that was awesome.”
Mahomes, of course, is continuing his record-breaking ways for the Kansas City Chiefs while Mayfield, whom the Cleveland Browns selected with the first overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft, is in the midst of his first season as a professional.
Both players have found their fair share of success this season and, as the Chiefs take on the Browns this Sunday at FirstEnergy Stadium, the two quarterbacks will meet for the first time in the NFL.
Mahomes has engineered the league’s top offense through eight games this year, leading the Chiefs to at least 30 points in all but one contest. Kansas City has racked up the most points (290), touchdowns (36) and plays of at least 20 yards (49) in the league while ranking second in scrimmage yards (3,445) and first downs (193), smashing a handful of franchise records in the process.
https://static.clubs.nfl.com/image/private/t_landscape_tablet/f_auto/chiefs/lz3rqmtwlezhejdsl9et.jpg
It’s been a joy to watch as the Chiefs have assembled the top record in the AFC behind the right arm of their 23-year-old quarterback.
Mayfield, meanwhile, has often flashed the playmaking ability that won him the Heisman Trophy in 2017 - with multiple touchdown passes in three of his five starts under center - but it hasn’t translated to the standings.
The Browns have just two wins on the year, culminating in the firing of Head Coach Hue Jackson and Offensive Coordinator Todd Haley earlier this week.
That turnover withstanding, the Chiefs are not taking Cleveland lightly.
“We don’t get into that. We know there is talent there and coaching there,” said Head Coach Andy Reid. “What we do is focus on the process of getting ready to play a football team and eliminate all those other things. That is what we can control.”
Indeed, the Browns have plenty of talent on both sides of the ball.
Rookie tailback Nick Chubb is averaging 6.12 yards per carry on the year, and pass-catchers Antonio Callaway, Jarvis Landry and David Njoku have each hauled in multiple touchdowns.
Landry leads that group with 49 catches for 528 yards, and with an AFC-most 94 targets this season, the five-year veteran has consistently been Mayfield’s top option on offense.
Though despite the contributions of Mayfield, Landry and the rest of the Browns’ playmakers, Cleveland has struggled to score points lately. They’ve tallied fewer than 20 points in three of their last four games, and as
recently as last week, the Browns amassed only 237 yards of offense.
That’s a trend the Chiefs’ defense, which has impressed in each of the last two weeks, will look to prolong on Sunday, and much of that centers around the pass rush.
Led by linebacker Dee Ford, whose six sacks in October garnered AFC Defensive Player of the Month honors, Kansas City has brought down the opposing quarterback the second-most times of any team in the league this season (24), while the Browns, fittingly, have yielded the most sacks in the NFL (33).
“[Mayfield] can extend plays with his feet and he can make all the throws, so we need to do a good job of getting in his face,” said linebacker Reggie Ragland. “We have to let Dee, [linebacker] Breeland [Speaks] and our big guys up front get to work, and I think we have a shot of getting to him.”

The Browns, meanwhile, also have a guy that’s pretty good at rushing the quarterback.
Linebacker Myles Garrett - the top pick in the 2017 Draft - is tied with Ford for the second-most sacks (8) in the NFL this season, recording three in the past two weeks alone.
“He is a great player right now,” Reid said. “You see him getting better from last year to this year. He is way more comfortable. He can bring it now. [He’s] fast, big, strong and quick - all those things make for a [good] defensive end or outside linebacker at this level. He is very quick off the ball.”
The second-year linebacker has three forced fumbles on the year, contributing to Cleveland’s NFL-leading 22 takeaways on the season.
For context, that’s more than 17 teams tallied all of last season, and nearly twice as many as the Browns forced in 2017. This defense can take the ball away.
“They know how to get turnovers. They go for the strips and they go for the interceptions,” Mahomes said. “For us, it’s about staying within our game, playing the game we’ve been playing this entire season, not trying to force anything and just trying to put some points on the board.”
That strategy has worked pretty well so far this season, as the Chiefs are off to their best start in five years, and they’ll look to keep it going on Sunday in Cleveland.

Game Preview from ESPN.com (http://www.espn.com/nfl/preview?gameId=401030814)
Browns will aim to respond to upheaval vs. first-place Chiefs
There's nothing normal for the Cleveland Browns hosting the Kansas City Chiefs this week after the dismissals of head coach Hue Jackson and offensive coordinator Todd Haley, but interim head coach Gregg Williams finds himself trying to instill some semblance of order and stability for his squad in a time of turmoil.
"It's about what we do here these last weeks now," Williams said. "The past is the past, today is what it is and now we've got to get on to the (next) day."
Williams is trying to pull the Browns (2-5-1) out of a three-game skid.
"It's one of those things that you can handle as a distraction or you can use it to come together as a team," Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield said Wednesday before the first practice under Williams. "This locker room can become a lot tighter. I haven't been through a midseason change, but when (former Oklahoma head coach) Bob Stoops stepped down and (Oklahoma head coach) Lincoln Riley was the head coach, that was kind of the same situation
"It was different. It was new to us. We used that to come together. I expect the guys in here to be grown men, to be experienced football players and to handle it that way and keep that same mindset that we have the same goal. We need to reach that and work with each other."
Chiefs head coach Andy Reid said his team can't let the distractions in Cleveland take his team's preparations off target. His plan is simple: stick to the process that helped his team to a 7-1 start
"We know there is talent there and coaching there," Reid said about the Browns. "What we do is focus in on getting the process of getting ready to play a football team and eliminate all those other things. That's what we can control."
The Browns certainly are not without talent, particularly on the defensive side of the ball. The club leads the league with 22 takeaways. Defensive end Myles Garrett, the No. 1 overall selection in the 2017 draft, paces the team with eight sacks. Reid says Garrett's speed off the ball makes him a dangerous pass rusher.
"You see him getting better from last year to this year," Reid said. "He is way more comfortable. He can bring it now. Fast, big, strong, quick, all those things make for a defensive end or outside linebacker at this level."
Reid expects Williams' defense to play aggressive against the Chiefs' passing attack led by quarterback Patrick Mahomes.
"He does a nice job with the guys," Reid said of Williams as a coach. "They will be ready to go. We have to make sure we focus in on that and make sure we are ready."
Mahomes sees that same aggression on the Cleveland game film.
"They have a great defensive line that can really rush the passer and they know how to get turnovers," Mahomes said. "They go for the strips, they go for the interceptions. For us, it's about staying within our game, playing the game we've been playing this entire season, not trying to force anything and just try to put some points on the board."
Williams said he scouted Mahomes among last year's quarterback class as the Browns prepared for the draft. Mahomes visited the Browns leading up to the draft, and Williams walked away sold on the quarterback's competitiveness and family upbringing.
"I was very impressed with him when he came through up here, and love what I heard, what I saw," Williams said. "I think the Chiefs have done a great job on how they've gone about coaching him, how they've built up his experience, how they trained him."
Offensively, the Browns remain fully behind Mayfield as the future face of the franchise. Williams believes the best thing he can to support Mayfield lies in helping him tap into instincts about how to be a NFL quarterback and lead a team on the field.
"I think he is also a lot like Pat there, I think he's a born leader," Williams said. "I think he's supposed to be the guy in the huddle. He's been that way his whole life. There's things that he does and feels about instincts that you cannot coach. You either have that or you don't have that."
Williams holds no doubts that Mayfield possesses the characteristics of a successful quarterback. But he seemed to question whether Jackson and Haley acted in the best interest of the rookie passer.
"He's got to have better people around him to continue to help do their job around him without making excuses," Williams said. "I can help him do that on not letting people make excuses around him."
Williams doesn't approach the second half of the season as a lost cause. He points to three losses by a combined nine points and four overtime games as evidence of a team closer to success than critics believe.
"We've got to continue to find a way to make a play or two at the end, maybe at the start, I don't know, to go ahead and win those games," Williams said." But Baker's the right guy, and there's a lot of other guys on this team that are also the right guys and we just got to get them going."

Keys to Victory: What needs to happen for the Browns to beat the Chiefs (https://www.clevelandbrowns.com/news/keys-to-victory-what-needs-to-happen-for-the-browns-to-beat-the-chiefs)
by Jimmy Watkins

1.Score more — and fast.
The Browns parted ways with two offensive-minded coaches this week. The best offense in the league is in town. It sounds obvious because it is. The Browns need to score more points, particularly early in games.
The Browns have gone half the season without a first quarter touchdown. Changing that is imperative. Playing ahead doesn’t just help the offense. It helps everyone.
“Offensively, if we’re staying on the field and getting points, it puts (the Chiefs) in an uncomfortable position,” defensive back T.J. Carrie said. “It allows (the defense) to be a little more aggressive in what we do and play a little different within our game plan.”
Of course, scoring early is always the game plan. Quarterback Baker Mayfield orchestrated two unanswered scoring drives to start last week’s game. But Pittsburgh regained the lead with just one. Good teams punish their opponents for kicking field goals.
“We just have to make the clutch plays,” Mayfield said. “We have to convert on third down, and we have to make the plays in critical moments. We have to win situational football, and we have to score touchdowns instead of field goals.”
2. Slow down Tyreek Hill (or at least tackle him while he’s moving fast)
The Chiefs score enough when all their weapons are on the field. The Browns can’t afford to surrender non-offensive touchdowns.
That means stopping Tyreek Hill, perhaps the most dangerous returner of this generation. Hill has scored five return touchdowns in under three seasons, including a 91-yard punt return touchdown earlier this season.
The simple solution is to kick away from Hill. He can’t score if he never gets the ball. But Browns special teams coordinator Amos Jones is a realist. He’ll do his best to steer Britton Colquitt away from kicking to Hill, but eventually the coverage team will need to pitch in.
“You obviously take directional punts into this game more so than ever,” Jones said. “But the bottom line is he is going to get a ball – we just have to tackle.”
3. Block out the noise
The Browns lost two coaches this week largely due to “internal discord” owner Jimmy Haslam said.
The players and remaining coaches spent all week telling reporters they didn't notice, nor were they affected by anything of that nature. And they’re taking the same approach to the fallout that’s accompanied the firings.
“Obviously, (the firings) could be a huge distraction, or it is something that could bring this locker room even closer,” Mayfield said. “We have to use this as something to make us come together.”
4. Ever wonder why the Chiefs score so many easy touchdowns?
The defenses they play against do, too. That’s because the Chiefs bamboozle their opponent on a weekly basis. They move players around, show different formations, deploy decoys and ball fakes. All in an attempt to shift opponents’ focuses from their assignments.
“They bank on (shifts and fakes) to get high-scoring plays,” Carrie said.
How do the Browns avoid the same pitfalls of 2018 defenses’ past?
“Trust your eyes,” safety Jabrill Peppers said. “See a little, then see a lot and make tackles in space is going to be the name of the game.”
