The Cardinals are coming off the bye,
so they are rested. That defense
better be as it readies to face Patrick
Mahomes and his potent offense. On
the other side, Josh Rosen looked good
in his last game, but this road environment
will be tough for him. Even so, I think the
Cardinals keep it closer than expected.

Chiefs Reporter

What a first half of the season it’s been for the Kansas City Chiefs.

With at least 30 points in eight of their nine games, the Chiefs have engineered the most prolific offense in franchise history up until this point, culminating in an AFC-best 8-1 record and a two-game lead in the division with seven contests left to play.

The offense has flourished behind the right arm of second-year quarterback Patrick Mahomes, who has a chance to set some records on Sunday as the Chiefs welcome the Arizona Cardinals into Arrowhead Stadium.

https://static.clubs.nfl.com/image/private/t_landscape_tablet/f_auto/chiefs/f2q8a77dkdaytirn1fse.jpg

Mahomes’ 29 touchdowns are just one shy of matching Pro Football Hall of Famer Len Dawson for the most in a season in franchise lore, and with one more 300-yard passing game, the 23-year-old Mahomes will own the longest streak of consecutive 300-yard performances in a single season in NFL history.

To even be approaching either mark is a remarkable accomplishment in its own when considering that Mahomes has played in just 10 career games, but the former first-round pick isn’t getting caught up in the hype.

“I don’t think there’s any time for that. When you are trying to focus on an NFL team and you want to make sure that you’re prepared, you can’t focus on the statistics and everything like that,” Mahomes said. “For me, it’s all about the wins. That’s all I want to do. I feel like the first thing I said when I came here was that I just wanted to win football games.”

Mahomes has done plenty of that so far, and he’ll look to do the same on Sunday against a Cardinals team that – while just 2-6 on the season – presents one of the better pass defenses in the league.

Arizona is holding opponents to only 224.6 passing yards per game - the seventh-best mark in the NFL – and has allowed a league-low nine touchdowns through the air this season.

In the middle of that success has been seven-time Pro Bowl cornerback Patrick Peterson, who has two interceptions on the year, and a stout defensive line that can get after the passer, led by defensive end Chandler Jones.

Jones has record double-digit sacks in each of the last three seasons, and with 6.5 already on the year, the seven-year veteran is well on his way to reaching that mark yet again in 2018.

“They have [some] great defensive players. They have a great corner over there by the name of Patrick Peterson, and they also have some studs up front,” said Offensive Coordinator Eric Bieniemy. “These guys, they play hard, regardless of their record…We have to go out and play hard and play fast and make sure we are assignment sound. We know what their goal is to do. Their goal is to get after us. Their goal is to make sure they do whatever they can do to secure a victory.”

One area the Cardinals have struggled to defend, however, is in the running game.

Opponents have averaged 143.1 yards per game on the ground against the Cardinals – the second-worst mark in the NFL – allotting tailback Kareem Hunt with an opportunity to continue his torrid stretch carrying the football.

Hunt has averaged 5.3 yards per carry in his last four games, tallying 553 yards from scrimmage and an NFL-most eight total touchdowns in that span. Overall, Hunt’s 995 total yards of offense rank fifth in the league, and with five more yards on Sunday, the 23-year-old Hunt will become just the second player in franchise history to rack up at least 1,000 yards from scrimmage in each of the first two years of a career.

The second-year tailback has been impressive, to say the least.

“Kareem just continues to pound,” said Head Coach Andy Reid following Hunt’s three-touchdown performance in last Sunday’s victory over Cleveland. “I have a hard time believing that anybody is playing better at that position than he is right now.”

https://static.clubs.nfl.com/image/private/t_landscape_tablet/f_auto/chiefs/k7gamocysh9bvzpadkg1.jpg

Of course, the Cardinals have their fair share of playmakers as well.

Veteran wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald, now in his 15th season as a professional, has a team-leading 34 catches for 357 yards and can still play with the best of them, while rookie wide out Christian Kirk has proven to be a reliable target with at least 40 yards in five of his last six games.

And while he’s struggled at times this season when compared to his stellar resume, fourth-year tailback David Johnson remains as one of the more dynamic tailbacks in the league. Johnson tallied 100 yards from scrimmage in the Cardinals’ Week 8 victory over San Francisco, hauling in four catches for 41 yards.

Getting each of those players the ball lately has been rookie quarterback Josh Rosen, the 10th overall pick in the 2018 Draft, who took over for veteran passer Sam Bradford back in Week 4. Rosen has made five starts on the year, posting a 69.6 passer rating in that time.

The UCLA product has been sacked 16 times since taking over under center for Arizona – a figure the Chiefs’ defense will look to add to on Sunday.

Linebacker Dee Ford has been Kansas City’s top sack artist this season, getting after the quarterback eight times already while chipping in four forced fumbles. Defensive end Chris Jones has been creating his fair share of havoc as well, with a sack in each of his last five games.

https://static.clubs.nfl.com/image/private/t_landscape_tablet/f_auto/chiefs/muk5uzlu9eelseryuc88.jpg

Jones’ streak is longest active stretch in the league and tied for the third-longest in franchise history.

“Chris has done a great job,” said Defensive Coordinator Bob Sutton. “He’s a really talented guy and I think the arrow is really pointing up. He can go so much further than that. Like a lot of players, his number one objective has got to be consistency and that, but he’s made a lot of big plays for us and I think he’s just going to keep getting better and better and better.”

Jones will aim to add to that streak on Sunday while, on the other side of the ball, Mahomes takes a shot at history as the Chiefs look for their ninth win of the campaign.

“It’s going to be a great test to get to go up against these guys,” Mahomes said. “We are just going to try to be ourselves and keep [this thing] going.”

The Chiefs will aim to do just that on Sunday at Arrowhead. Catch the game on CBS (KCTV5 local) and 101.1 The Fox.

Chiefs must avoid letdown against overmatched Cardinals

The Kansas City Chiefs feature the NFL's highest-scoring offense, are tied for the best record in football and sport a perfect record at home.

Up next for quarterback Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs is a home date with the struggling Arizona Cardinals, the lowest-scoring team in the NFC whose only two victories have come at the expense of the two-win San Francisco 49ers.

On paper, it shapes up as one of the biggest mismatches in recent years, with oddsmakers in Las Vegas installing Kansas City as a prohibitive favorite as high as 16 points.

Amid such chatter, Chiefs head coach Andy Reid is wary of a letdown by his team, which has rebounded from its only loss -- a 43-40 setback at New England -- by ripping off three straight victories and averaging a robust 37.3 points during that run.

"Guys are going to be asked that question a lot," Reid told reporters this week. "That's just part of this game. You always hear that. You can let spreads, you can let all these things, trap game, all these terms that pop up and things that happen come into it."

The temptation to overlook the punchless Cardinals is one obstacle for Reid and his staff. Just as worrisome is to keep his players from looking ahead to one of the most anticipated games of the season -- a prime-time Monday night matchup in Mexico City against the one-loss Los Angeles Rams on Nov. 19.

"If you can honestly focus on the process and discipline yourself enough to do that, that normally takes care of things," Reid said. "It at least makes it an even game in that area where you're not going to let distractions get in the way."

Mahomes leads the league in touchdowns (29) and passing yards (2,901) and will be bidding to tie Drew Brees' NFL record of nine consecutive 300-yard games. Mahomes also can join Hall of Famer Steve Young as the only players in history with five straight games of at least 300 yards and three scoring passes.

With a bevy of offensive game-breakers that include running back Kareem Hunt, wide receiver Tyreek Hill and tight end Travis Kelce, even first-year Cardinals head coach Steve Wilks understands there is only so much a defense can do to contain Mahomes and Co.

"I don't think you can stop those guys completely," Wilks said. "You've just got to hope you can slow them down."

The Cardinals average a league-worst 233.3 yards and rank 31st in scoring at 13.8 points per game, so attempting to match a Kansas City offense that is churning out an average of 433.4 yards and 36.3 points appears futile. However, Mahomes noted that Arizona is a stingy seventh in pass defense (224.6 yards).

"They have Patrick Peterson at corner," Mahomes said. "They got dudes everywhere on that defense. For me it's going to be a great test to get to go up against these guys. We're going to try to be ourselves and keep what we have going, going."

The Cardinals' best chance of hanging with the Chiefs is to play keep-away from Mahomes. Kansas City's defense certainly is vulnerable, ranking 31st (427.4 yards) overall and 25th against the run (124.8).

"I think their defense is pretty good. I know the numbers don't show it," Wilks said. "The great thing about what they have, they have a very explosive offense to be able to compensate and score points. So, we feel like there's an opportunity in the run game. Hopefully, we can run the football against these guys, and hopefully, there's going to be an opportunity in the pass game as well."

Arizona needs to lean on running back David Johnson, who has scored five touchdowns but has rushed for more than 59 yards just once in eight games. Production from the ground game would lessen the burden on rookie quarterback Josh Rosen, who echoed his coach's sentiment that Kansas City's inflated defensive stats are misleading.

"I think a lot of those numbers are a little bit deceiving because they're up by 30 in half their games," Rosen said. "So, a lot of times they're just playing back. They let the offense do what they want to do, try to bend not break, hold them to field goals.

"I think they're like 32nd in pass defense, but I don't think you should read into that at all. They're a very good football team with a very good defense. A lot of that is just because their offense is scoring so many points."

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – After canvassing the Cardinals’ locker room this week, it became clear there is a healthy amount of respect for the Chiefs’ offense, and why wouldn’t there be?

Kansas City leads the NFL with an average of 36.3 points per game, which has it on pace to finish as the third highest-scoring team of all-time, behind the 2013 Broncos and 2007 Patriots.

Quarterback Patrick Mahomes is the MVP favorite and throws to arguably the best collection of skill players – wideout Tyreek Hill, tight end Travis Kelce, running back Kareem Hunt and wideout Sammy Watkins – in the NFL.

But that respect does not cross the line to dread. Veteran safety Tre Boston has felt great satisfaction from slowing down high-powered offenses before, and passed along a key message to his younger teammates this week.

“Don’t make it a game of fear,” Boston said. “‘Oh my God, these guys do this and that.’ Go out there and play ball, man. They’ve got to beat us just like everybody else.”

The Cardinals (2-6) understand they are substantial underdogs on Sunday -- Kansas City is 8-1 with Super Bowl ambitions and gets this game in raucous Arrowhead Stadium – but they pledge not to lay down.

“That’s Vegas,” cornerback Patrick Peterson said. “That’s what they think. I believe that does give us a little added juice to this game. Everyone is obviously writing us off. No one’s giving a chance, more than a two-touchdown underdog. The game still has to be played regardless.”

The Chiefs offense has been nearly impossible to stop this season because of its numerous ways to attack. The skill player quartet takes turns making big plays, while coach Andy Reid continues to innovate at the age of 60, using misdirection to keep a defense on its heels.

Mahomes, who has a quarterback rating of 116.7 this season and 29 touchdown passes, can be a strong-armed pocket passer, but is also elite throwing on the run.

“The way he gets the ball out, it reminds me of baseball players, the way they throw the ball,” safety Budda Baker said. “It’s crazy to see on film, especially when he gets out of the pocket. He’s more accurate when he’s on the run, so we’re definitely going to try to keep him in the pocket.”

Baker paused for a second as his mind flashed back to the tape he has been studying.

“He’s been doing a lot of things in the pocket, as well,” Baker said.

In order to stay close, the Cardinals’ best defense may have to be its offense. Quarterback Josh Rosen is coming off a phenomenal fourth quarter against the 49ers in which he threw for 150 yards and two touchdowns for an 18-15 win.

That success has been an outlier this season, but it needs to continue because short drives will play right into Kansas City’s hands.

The Cardinals know their margin for error in this game is slim. The Chiefs have scored 27 points or more in every game and the Cardinals’ defense will search for ways to slow them down.

“It’s a challenge each and every week, but when you look at an offense like this, yes, it brings a little more to the table,” coach Steve Wilks said. “Very explosive, putting points on the board. Is it a statement game? Every game to me is a statement game. I think it’s an opportunity for our defense to go out here and take another step against a great offense.”
