“Takeaways are big for us. We work hard at them, we talk about them every single day ... you move in the direction of your most dominant thought. If you keep talking about it, you keep thinking about it and you keep showing them and they see it - then you have to do it in practice and you got to emphasize it in practice when they come off. ... The number one thing in takeaways is taking advantage of your opportunities.”

--Chiefs Defensive Coordinator Bob Sutton

Rams:

“When we go out there and execute and play ball and play fast with the guys that we got, I think we match up pretty well with them.”

This game was moved to Los Angeles
from Mexico for the field conditions,
which is an advantage to the Rams
since it was their home game anyway.
This should be a shootout with a ton
of points. I think the Rams at home
will get the most of them. Jared Goff
lights up the Chiefs and wins his duel
with Patrick Mahomes.

Games like this simply don’t come along very often.

With just two losses between them, the Kansas City Chiefs and Los Angeles Rams have been the class of the National Football League this season.

Both teams feature prolific offenses led by two of the top young quarterbacks in the league, and with the best record in the NFL on the line, the Chiefs and Rams will face off under the lights at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum on Monday night.

It’s a matchup that’s already worked its way into the history books before either team has played a down.

Just eight players in the near century-long history of the NFL have ever tossed for at least 3,000 yards and posted a passer rating of 110.0 through the first 10 games of a season, and two of them will meet on Monday in the Chiefs’ Patrick Mahomes and the Rams’ Jared Goff.

https://static.clubs.nfl.com/image/private/t_landscape_tablet/f_auto/chiefs/yygtydkz4cnj5ffn5cfn.jpg

The two signal callers lead the league in passing yards (Mahomes: 3,150, Goff: 3,134) and throws of at least 25 yards (Mahomes: 32, Goff: 28) while leading their respective teams to the most (Chiefs: 353) and second-most (Rams: 335) points in the NFL.

Those performances have each led to a whole bunch of wins, and in fact, Monday’s contest will represent the first clash of teams with one or fewer losses this late in the season in five years.

Simply put, games like this are rare, and it’ll take place with the eyes of the nation watching.

“You’re very excited. First off, it’s Monday Night [Football], so you’re going to be the only thing on TV, and you’re going to get to play against a really, really good team in every aspect,” Mahomes said. “They’re good on special teams, good on defense and good on offense, and when you play in this league, you want to play against the best. Getting to compete against a team like this is going to be a great challenge for us and we’re going to go out there and compete.”

Mahomes has done plenty of competing through his first 10 games as the Chiefs’ starting quarterback, already tossing a franchise-record 31 touchdowns while throwing for the fourth-most passing yards through Week 10 in NFL history.

The 23-year-old Mahomes has already tied the Chiefs’ single-season mark for 300-yard passing games (8) and has multiple touchdowns through the air in each of his last five games, distributing the ball to a slew of playmakers on offense.

That arsenal includes wide receiver Tyreek Hill, who is just 117 receiving yards shy of 1,000 on the year and whose nine touchdowns rank second in the NFL, and tailback Kareem Hunt, who ranks fifth in the league with 1,091 yards from scrimmage.

https://static.clubs.nfl.com/image/private/t_landscape_tablet/f_auto/chiefs/otuopv2uihrjtgkbkcbn.jpg

Mahomes will look for Hill, Hunt, All-Pro tight end Travis Kelce and the rest of the Chiefs’ pass-catchers yet again on Monday while attempting to evade one of the league’s most dominant defensive lines.

“They’ve got some pass rushers. [They have defensive tackles] Aaron Donald, Ndamukong Suh and Michael Brockers - I could name this entire defense, and it’s probably one of the top defenses in the NFL,” said Offensive Coordinator Eric Bieniemy. “But when it’s all said and done with, we have to go out and perform at a high level. If we want to come out victorious, everybody has to be accountable. We have to play hard, we have to play fast and when [a guy is] called upon to make a play, [he is] responsible for making that play.”

Donald, in particular, is often regarded as one of the top defensive players in all of football.

The fifth-year lineman leads the NFL in sacks (12.5) and tackles-for-loss (16) as the anchor of a Rams’ defense that isn’t short on playmakers, though they’ve struggled to slow opponents down of late.

Los Angeles yielded 31 points last week in a narrow victory over Seattle and 45 points the week prior in a loss to New Orleans – beginning a trend the Chiefs will aim to continue on Monday.

https://static.clubs.nfl.com/image/private/t_landscape_tablet/f_auto/chiefs/jbwski6ut6us4offvfpc.jpg

The Rams are just as talented on the other side of the ball, allotting Goff with an abundance of weapons offensively. That group is led by All-Pro tailback Todd Gurley, who leads the league in scrimmage yards (1,390) and touchdowns (17) as the workhorse of Los Angeles’ attack.

“He is a heck of a player - a great player,” said Chiefs’ Head Coach Andy Reid. “You have to be disciplined [on defense]. They’re a disciplined offense, so you have to be disciplined from a defensive standpoint. You have to practice that way and then you go play.”

https://static.clubs.nfl.com/image/private/t_landscape_tablet/f_auto/chiefs/oniwaqchneqrji2je3fx.jpg

In addition to Gurley, who has accounted for 30 percent of the Rams’ total yards on offense, Goff has a pair of talented receivers at his disposal in Brandin Cooks (857 yards; 3 touchdowns) and Robert Woods (832 yards; 3 touchdowns), though it’s worth mentioning that Los Angeles’ top end-zone threat, wide receiver Cooper Kupp, will miss Monday’s game with a knee injury.

Still, even without Kupp, the Rams’ pass-catchers can stretch the field and create problems, presenting an intriguing challenge for a Chiefs’ defense that ranks fourth in the NFL in points allowed per game (17.0) over the last four weeks.

It should be fun to watch as, overall, Kansas City takes on a team that shares its legitimate Super Bowl aspirations with the homestretch of the regular season coming into focus.

“You want to compete against these teams because they are going to be the teams that are there at the end of the season,” Mahomes said. “You want to make sure that you can go out there and compete and we’re just going to try to stay within ourselves. Hopefully, doing the same stuff that we’ve done this entire season, we can come out with a win in the end.”

Game Preview from ESPN.com (http://www.espn.com/nfl/preview?gameId=401030972)

Rams-Chiefs game could be an offensive bonanza

Two of the NFL's best teams, equipped with two of the best young quarterbacks, will meet on Monday night at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum when the Kansas City Chiefs face the Los Angeles Rams.

The game was originally scheduled to be played in Mexico City, but the poor conditions of the playing surface at Estadio Azteca caused the game to be moved to Los Angeles, giving the Rams an unexpected home game.

The Rams (9-1) are 5-0 at home, while the Chiefs (9-1) suffered their only loss in a 43-40 road defeat against the New England Patriots.

The Chiefs' star is 23-year-old quarterback Patrick Mahomes, who leads the league in touchdown passes (31) and passing yards per game and is second in passer rating, behind only New Orleans' Drew Brees.

"You know the consistency at which Patrick has operated and taking good care of the football and made plays in rhythm but then off schedule has been phenomenal," Rams head coach Sean McVay said.

Mahomes directs an offense that ranks second in the league in scoring at 35.3 points per contest. Running back Kareem Hunt ranks seventh in the league in rushing, averaging 75.4 yards per game, while the key receivers are wideout Tyreek Hill (16.2 yards per catch, nine touchdowns), tight end Travis Kelce (57 catches, six touchdowns) and Sammy Watkins (39 catches, 515 yards).

"It's fun if you're watching as a football fan; it's not fun when you're watching it getting ready to play them," McVay said.

McVay has a pretty good offense, too. The Rams are right behind the Chiefs in scoring, averaging 33.5 points per game, and third-year quarterback Jared Goff is third in the league in touchdown passes with 22 and fifth in both passing yards per game and passer rating.

Goff has the advantage of having the league's leading rusher in his backfield in running back Todd Gurley II, who is 12 yards shy of 1,000 for the season and has 40 receptions for 402 yards. He rushed for 120 yards and added 40 receiving yards in the Rams' 36-31 victory over Seattle last week.

The Rams suffered a setback in that game when they lost wide receiver Cooper Kupp for the season with a torn ACL, but they still have Brandin Cooks and Robert Woods, each of whom has over 50 catches and 800 receiving yards.

"You have to be disciplined," Chiefs head coach Andy Reid said. "They're a disciplined offense, so you have to be disciplined from a defensive standpoint. Then practice that way and then you go play."

Neither team has outstanding defensive numbers. The Chiefs rank 29th in total defense and are in the middle of the pack in scoring defense, yielding 24.0 points per game. Outside linebacker Dee Ford is third in the NFL in sacks with nine.

The Rams are 20th in total defense and 12th in scoring defense, giving up 23.1 points per contest. But the Rams have defensive tackle Aaron Donald, who leads the league in sacks with 12.5.

One of the significant side stories involves Chiefs receiver Watkins and Rams cornerback Marcus Peters, both of whom will be facing the teams they played for last season.

Peters started the trash talking for his matchup against his former teammates back in February, telling the NFL Network he expected turnovers and a win and that Mahomes "knows how to get me the ball."

Peters has struggled this season, but McVay defends his cornerback.

"I think that the numbers can tell an entirely different story than what the reality is," McVay said, "because the reality is we've put him in a lot of difficult spots where he's one-on-one with the opposing team's best receiver."

Watkins already has as many receptions this season (39) as he did all of last season with the Rams. He sat out Sunday's 26-14 victory over the Arizona Cardinal with a foot injury, but he is expected to play against the Rams.

"He's so physical with the speed, he's someone that can really stretch the defense as well as put pressure on them in a lot of different ways," Mahomes said. "I thought guys did well, stepped up and played well in replacing the role, but at the same time it's hard to replace a guy like Sammy."

The change in venue did not affect the Chiefs' preparation, since they planned to stay in Kansas City to practice.

"With the extra day and it being a Monday night game, we were going to prep like we normally do, but we really never got to that point," Reid said. "Players are a little bit resilient, just like coaches, wherever you put us, we are going to go and do what we do. So, you kind of prepare for the team, which is what we spend our time doing."

The Rams moved their game preparations to the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo., to prepare for the altitude of Mexico City and to escape wild fires near their training facility in Thousand Oaks, Calif.

"As far as affecting our preparation, we're out in Colorado Springs, we're going to go stay here until Saturday and then go back to L.A.," McVay said. "But we'll never complain about an opportunity to get a chance to play in front of our home fans and it's something we're looking forward to."

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Cover up the names on a side-by-side list of statistics, and it’s almost impossible to differentiate between the Rams’ offense and the Kansas City Chiefs’ offense.

The Chiefs have scored a few more points, while the Rams have totaled a few more yards. The Rams carry the ball into the end zone with great ease, while the Chiefs like to throw it. The Rams have run a few more plays, but the teams have averaged exactly the same yards per play (6.9) through nine games this season.

Las Vegas has set 63.5 points as the over/under spread for Monday’s game at the Coliseum, and the poor folks who carry the yardage markers on the sidelines better have some electrolytes ready.

This is a game between, by all objective standards, two of the three best offenses in the NFL – the New Orleans Saints certainly would like a word – and it’s being viewed by some as a possible Super Bowl preview.

Both teams enter the game with 9-1 records and with offenses that, even though they have different architects and philosophies, have produced shockingly similar results. Here’s a look at how the Rams and Chiefs resemble each other on offense, and some important differences:

HOW THEY’RE SIMILAR

1. Quarterbacks: Go ahead, find a major statistical difference between the Rams’ Jared Goff and the Chiefs’ Patrick Mahomes. Their attempts per game, yards per game, completion percentage and yards per attempt all are almost identical. They’re both tall, lanky quarterbacks who can get the ball down the field quickly.

Mahomes sat and watched for most of his 2017 rookie season – not unlike Goff in 2016 – then stepped in as the full-time starter this season and already has thrown 31 touchdown passes in 10 games.

2. Efficiency: There are few wasted plays when it comes to these offenses, particularly in the pass game. Neither the Chiefs nor the Rams rank in the top half of NFL teams when it comes to pass attempts per game, yet they rank fourth and fifth, respectively, in passing yards per game.

Both teams have outperformed their play totals. The Rams rank third in total plays run and second in yards per game. The Chiefs rank eighth in total plays and third in yards per game.

3. Protection: Goff and Mahomes both are both reasonably agilie, and both have been protected by solid offensive lines. The Chiefs have allowed only 17 sacks in 10 games, while the Rams have allowed 19. In a sack-per-attempt comparison, the Chiefs fare even better because they throw the ball more.

The Chiefs have been able to maintain this even though injuries caused a bit of flux along their line last month. Injuries to that unit led to breakdowns at times last season, but not this year.

HOW THEY’RE DIFFERENT

1. Play selection: The Rams have maintained a fairly tight run-pass balance, with 29.5 rushing attempts per game and 33.4 passing attempts per game. Even though the Chiefs have a fantastic, former 1,300-yard rusher in Kareem Hunt, they average only 24.7 rush attempts per game, which is 19th-most in the NFL.

The teams are very close when it comes to yards per rush attempt - 4.9 for the Rams, 4.8 for the Chiefs - but the difference is the Chiefs have hit on more big plays. Kansas City has recorded 12 rushing plays of at least 20 yards, which the most in the NFL. The Rams have eight run plays that have gone 20-plus yards.

2. Point distribution: This is an area that might be troubling for the Rams. The Chiefs’ offense has been extraordinarily consistent, with a total of 92 points in the first quarter, 101 points in the second quarter and 92 points in the third quarter. It drops off in the fourth (68), likely because the Chiefs have held large leads.

The Rams have been slow starters on both sides of the ball at times this season. They've scored only 58 first quarter points compared to 114 second quarter points, and the Rams defense has forced them into some tight games. The Rams won't want to be playing trailing in a shootout game, as they had to do at New Orleans a couple of weeks ago.

3. Tight-end usage: The Rams increasingly have used Gerald Everett and Tyler Higbee over the past month, but not anything close to the extent that the Chiefs use three-time Pro Bowl tight end Travis Kelce.

Kelce, in his sixth season, leads the Chiefs with 57 receptions and is second on the team with 787 receiving yards. Kelce usually is good for at least five catches and 60 yards per game, and often much more. The Rams’ duo of Higbee and Everett has combined for 26 receptions and 296 yards this season.

Oohhhh boy! Today is the day! I hope we see our chiefs victorious to show the world what they’re capable of. Wish we had Watkins but this may be a ploy to save Watkins for a possible playoff matchup where they feature him as the #1 when it counts the most

This is going to be a game to watch if you love offense. Last team with the ball will win IMO.

A win in this one would be huge this is the biggest test we have left and if we get the W I think we will be the 1 seed for the AFC and the playoffs will come through Arrowhead hope they can find a way to get it done

We still have to play the Chargers and the Seahawks and yet you keep underestimating them for some reason, im very worried about the Ravens, Seasehawks and Chargers games still to play all 3 are very good teams and will be formitable tests for us and we will need to score in the high 30's to beat all 3

I think we have a good chance to win this game. Their defense is only giving up. 0.2 points per game than ours is and our offense is better. I see a lot of Chiefs fans in the stands so home field shouldn't be much of a factor. We will need to force a couple of turnovers but I think we got this.

That was dumb. So was not letting the kickoff go into the end zone. We can make those kind of mistakes when we're up by 17 but not now.

Truth.

There's still a lot of football left to be played.

TopekaRoy
11-19-2018, 11:25 PM
The highest score in a National Football League (NFL) game occurred on November 27, 1966, when the Washington Redskins and New York Giants combined for 113 points in a 72-41 victory for the Redskins.

I think that record is safe ... Maybe!
