If the Chiefs win here, they lock up
the top seed in the AFC. I think that
will happen, even if the Raiders have
played better lately as a team. The
Chiefs offense will be too much for
the Raiders, but Oakland will score
here as well. It will be fun, but the
Chiefs will take it.

It all comes down to this.

A third-straight AFC West title and the top seed in the conference are right there for the Kansas City Chiefs, with the rival Oakland Raiders standing as the only obstacle in the way.
The implications on Sunday afternoon are simple: if the Chiefs win, they’ll own the No. 1 seed in the AFC for the first time in two decades and the road to the Super Bowl will go through Arrowhead Stadium.

It’s an enormous advantage, as each of the last five top seeds in the AFC have marched all the way to the Super Bowl, and it’s one the Chiefs can seize this weekend despite two-straight losses.

Kansas City dropped a heartbreaker to the Los Angeles Chargers two weeks ago before losing another close game this past Sunday, falling to the Seattle Seahawks by a touchdown. Those losses stung, but all of the Chiefs’ goals are still attainable with a win on Sunday.

“I don’t want people to forget that we’re playing for the number one seed here,” said Head Coach Andy Reid. “We’re not playing for the first pick in the draft, we’re playing for the number one seed in the playoffs. We’ve had a couple rough weeks, but we’re going to bounce back out of that and get ourselves right.”

The Chiefs have an opportunity to do just that against a familiar opponent this weekend.

https://static.clubs.nfl.com/image/private/t_editorial_landscape_12_desktop/f_auto/chiefs/e9ikwk3qs97e7wa4g8eu.jpg

Oakland is 4-11 this season, falling to the Chiefs earlier this month as part of a mid-season stretch of eight games with just one victory. It also marked the Raiders’ ninth loss to Kansas City in 11 matchups since 2013.

Morale by the bay seems to have shifted since these teams last met, however, as the Raiders have shown signs of improvement lately with victories in two of their last three games.

Oakland dealt the Pittsburgh Steelers a devastating blow in their pursuit of the postseason three weeks ago and, just last Sunday, the Raiders handily beat the Denver Broncos in the Oakland-Alameda Coliseum season-finale.

The win over Denver was the Raiders’ first divisional victory since Week 12 of the 2017 season behind strong performances from veteran tailback Doug Martin and wide receiver Jordy Nelson, with the former tallying his first 100-yard rushing game of the campaign.

https://static.clubs.nfl.com/image/private/t_editorial_landscape_12_desktop/f_auto/chiefs/stigkpghm2qbdclcd8b5.jpg

Quarterback Derek Carr, meanwhile, continued to play a brand of mistake-free football that’s helped the five-year veteran go 10-consecutive weeks without an interception. Carr has 19 touchdowns to eight picks overall on the year, primarily spreading the ball around to tailback Jalen Richard (66 catches, 590 yards), tight end Jared Cook (65 catches, 868 yards), Nelson (54 catches, 661 yards) and wide receiver Seth Roberts (40 catches, 463 yards).

The unit features plenty of capable pass-catchers but has generally struggled to score points this season due in part to an inability to protect Carr. The veteran quarterback has been sacked 48 times this year – the third-most of any signal caller in the league.

It’s worth mentioning that the Chiefs’ defense has the second-most sacks in the league with 49 - led by defensive end Chris Jones (15.5) and linebacker Dee Ford (12.0) - presenting a mismatch that could be exploited on Sunday.

https://static.clubs.nfl.com/image/private/t_editorial_landscape_12_desktop/f_auto/chiefs/odoqasnodbpety63et68.jpg

Conversely, the Raiders’ defense ranks last in the NFL when it comes to bringing down the opposing quarterback. Oakland has just 13 sacks on the season and didn’t muster any when these two teams matched up four weeks ago, providing quarterback Patrick Mahomes and the top statistical offense in the NFL with the prospect of ample time to move the ball.

Tight end Travis Kelce, in particular, could be in store for a big game.

The All-Pro tight end put together the top performance of his career the last time these two teams played with 12 catches for 168 yards and two touchdowns, adding to what’s been a record-breaking campaign.

Kelce already owns the franchise single-season record for receiving yards by a tight end, surpassing the mark set by Tony Gonzalez in 2004, and with just 54 yards on Sunday, he can pass Rob Gronkowski for the NFL record. Kelce is also just five catches shy of passing Gonzalez for the most catches by a player during a single season in franchise lore.

“He stepped in on day one and has been attacking every single day,” Mahomes said of Kelce. “He’s a guy who’s had a lot of success in this league, but he’s never satisfied. He - like a lot of my teammates - wants to get better every single day, so it’s exciting to be with those guys who really love the game and want to get better.”

https://static.clubs.nfl.com/image/private/t_editorial_landscape_12_desktop/f_auto/chiefs/b6cyqbar56kaindcfh84.jpg

Fellow pass-catcher Tyreek Hill, meanwhile, can make some history as well. The fleet-footed Hill is just 14 yards short of passing Derrick Alexander for the most receiving yards during a single season by a player in a Chiefs’ uniform.

Mahomes has excelled at getting both players the ball this season – not to mention the other 10 targets that have caught a touchdown for Kansas City on the year – and it has the 23-year-old inching toward some history of his own.

The former first-round pick is just two touchdowns and 184 passing yards shy of 50 and 5,000 for the season. Only one other quarterback in the history of the league – future Hall of Famer Peyton Manning - has ever reached those marks during a season.

Manning was 37 when he compiled those ridiculous numbers in 2013, having already played more than a decade and endured the learning curve of executing the most difficult position in all of sports.

Mahomes is on the verge of posting similar numbers in his first season as a starting quarterback, engineering what’s already been the most productive offense in franchise history.

https://static.clubs.nfl.com/image/private/t_editorial_landscape_12_desktop/f_auto/chiefs/nw0vbblqvuuvtggvpc1y.jpg

In fact, only six teams in the history of the NFL have finished the regular season with a scoring average of 35.0 points per game. With an average mark of 35.3 as of now, the Chiefs can become the seventh member of that list with one more strong offensive performance.

It’s also fitting that the Chiefs’ pursuit of homefield advantage throughout the postseason will take place in front of the Arrowhead faithful on Sunday afternoon, where Kansas City has won nine of its last 10 divisional matchups.

There’s a lot on the line, but if the Chiefs can defend their home turf on Sunday, the path to a championship will go through Arrowhead Stadium.

“I think everyone is excited for the opportunity to play a divisional opponent and to play it at Arrowhead,” Mahomes said. “We want to make sure we get to stay here the rest of the way out. We know that if we can come together and play like we know we can, then we can make a run at this thing.”

Raiders vow to bring it against Chiefs

The Kansas City Chiefs take the field on Sunday at Arrowhead Stadium with everything to play for and the Oakland Raiders seemingly have little to nothing on the line, but don't tell that to Jon Gruden.

"It's our archrivals and we want to win just like everybody else," the Raiders' head coach said. "Just because we're not going to the playoffs doesn't mean we're going to go out there and pack it in. We want to win. We want to play hard. We've got guys playing for jobs and we got a strong desire to compete and a real will to win here."

The Chiefs have two paths in the playoffs -- the easy way and the hard way. A win over Oakland clinches the AFC West for Kansas City along with home-field throughout the AFC playoffs.

A loss, however, means the Chiefs need a combination of losses by the Los Angeles Chargers, New England Patriots and Houston Texans to avoid falling to the No. 5 seed and a road trip in the wild-card playoff round.

Securing home-field advantage and ensuring the road to the Super Bowl runs through Arrowhead Stadium means much to quarterback Patrick Mahomes.

"We want to make sure that we're staying here the rest of the way out," Mahomes said. "We know that if we can come together and play like we know we can, then we can make a run at this thing."

Chiefs head coach Andy Reid, however, doesn't want his team caught up worrying about playoff scenarios. His message to his team: "Let your personalities show and go play." That's the most important thing, he says.

"If you get caught up in everything, that becomes an issue and then you're not yourself," Reid said. "When you focus in on the game plan, go through the process of getting ready and then you're confident and you go play to the best of your ability. You allow yourself to do that by preparation."

Four weeks ago, the Chiefs beat the Raiders and won 40-33 in Oakland. Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce had a career-high 12 catches, 168 receiving yards and two touchdowns. Conversely, wide receiver Tyreek Hill turned in one of the worst days of his young career, catching one pass for 13 yards.

"Statistics, unfortunately, don't tell half of the story the way I see it," Gruden said. "We've got to do a lot better job on Hill and on Kelce and on their whole offense, because they scored 40 points and I think they left some out there."

The Raiders enter the weekend at huge underdogs to the Chiefs, but an upset would have monumental repercussions throughout the AFC playoff picture. A victory would hurt Oakland's position in next year's NFL draft, but Gruden prefers seeing his team finish the season on a winning note.

"We're going to field the best team we can possibly field and we're going to play and prepare as hard as we can to win the game," Gruden said. "I know it's going to be a daunting challenge with that crowd against that team, but we're going to compete the best we can."

The Raiders are 4-11 after beating the Denver Broncos 27-17 on Monday night in what might have been the final game for the team in Oakland. The Raiders move to Las Vegas in 2020 and the team and city are bickering about a lease, this time a one-season deal to cover 2019.

But Gruden is more concerned at this moment about Mahomes. The second-year player leads the NFL with 48 touchdown passes, tied for fourth most in league history.

"Not to take anything away from (Drew) Brees or anybody else that has played at a high level. This guy is making throws that people haven't seen before and closing in on 50 touchdown passes in your first year as a starter. It's quite amazing," Gruden said. "He's taking care of the ball and he's won games for his team, so if I did have a vote (for MVP), I would probably stand here in front of these microphones and say, 'I vote for him.'"

Pick Six: Raiders look to play spoiler in 2018 finale against Kansas City Chiefs (https://www.raiders.com/news/pick-six-raiders-look-to-play-spoiler-in-2018-finale-against-kansas-city-chiefs)

By Eddie Paskal

There are just 16 opportunities for NFL teams to show what they’re made of, and the Oakland Raiders will have their final chance to do just that as they hit the road for the 2018 regular season finale against the Kansas City Chiefs.

Andy Reid’s team has everything to play for, and you best believe the Silver and Black would like to play spoiler, and head into the offseason with a winning mark over their final seven games.

Games at Arrowhead Stadium are always a challenge –that place gets loud – but the Raiders are playing some of their best football of 2018, and anything can happen when these AFC West foes get together.

Kickoff has been moved back to 1:25 pm PT; here are six things to watch for once the action gets underway.

1. Will the Raiders start fast?

Christmas Eve was exceptional for the Silver and Black.

The win over the Denver Broncos was obviously the highlight of the night, but man, when you throw in the atmosphere, Marshawn Lynch lighting the torch, and the passion that Raider Nation brought, it really was a memorable one.

Heck, Derek Carr did a lap of the field following the clock hitting triple zeroes, the vibes were that good.

But, alas, that was last week, and the good times are now in the rearview mirror as Head Coach Jon Gruden’s team has quite the challenge in front of them Sunday afternoon.

The Chiefs put up points in a big way – their 35.3 points per game is tops in the league – so if the Raiders want to hang with Patrick Mahomes and Co., they’re going to need to put up some points early.

Let’s see if they can do just that.

2. It’s all about ball security

The last time these two AFC West foes tangoed – in Week 13 for those of you who somehow forgot – the Raiders actually hung pretty tough with the Chiefs, but looking back, it was the Silver and Black’s turnovers that really did them in.

In the seven-point loss, the Raiders fumbled four times, losing three, and if you’re giving the ball away for free at that high of a clip, to one of the best offenses in the league, it’s hard to win football games.

Well, no Raiders running back coughed up the rock last week against the Broncos, and the group is playing some of its best football of 2018.

You don’t want to give Mahomes any more chances with the ball then he’s already going to get, so ball security – both on the ground and from Carr– is going to be paramount.

3. Since we’re talking about the Raiders running backs….

Keep the ground and pound going, baby!

Doug Martin put together his best game as a Raider last week – a 21-carry, 107-yard performance – and considering the fact that the Chiefs have struggled mightily at times stopping the run, I would assume that’s a weakness that Head Coach Jon Gruden wants to take advantage of.

The Raiders have found the most success this year when the big fellas up front control the line of scrimmage and give the running backs chances to make plays, so in Sunday’s game, which should be a chilly one, keep an eye on the Raiders offensive line to see if they can do just that.

If they can, and the Raiders control the time of possession, I like the Silver and Black’s chances, even in a raucous, road environment.

4. Take advantage of the chances Mahomes gives you

Look, Patrick Mahomes is having an absolutely stellar 2018 campaign.

His 48 passing touchdowns are not only the most in the league, they’re the most in the league by a wide margin, and with 4,816 passing yards, he’s likely not only going to eclipse the 5,000-yard mark, but there’s a pretty good chance he’ll finish the season with the passing yard title.

The former Texas Tech Red Raider has been superb this season, and it’s a big reason why he’s a favorite to win MVP, but as good as Mahomes has been, the big-armed quarterback will definitely give the opposing defenses chances to make plays.

The Silver and Black didn’t pick off Mahomes during the team’s Week 13 clash at the OACC, but coming off a Monday night performance where the Raiders secondary got Case Keenum not once, but twice, I’m excited to see if Rashaan Melvin and Co., can keep that positive momentum rocking in KC.

We all know Mahomes likes to force the issues at times, hopefully the Raiders can take advantage of that eagerness to make a play.

5. Don’t let Chris Jones eat

The Raiders offensive line pulled a Gandalf Monday night, and told Von Miller and Bradley Chubb that they simply would not pass and get to Derek Carr.

The dynamic duo – one of the best pass-rushing tandems in the NFL – were complete non-factors in the Raiders primetime win earlier this week, but the offensive line will have yet another big challenge in front of them this weekend trying to stop Chris Jones.

With 15.5 sacks in 2018 – including sacks in 11-straight games – the former Mississippi State Bulldog has shown that he deserves to have his name in the conversation when you’re talking about elite pass rushers in the NFL.

Like I said, the Silver and Black’s o-line is coming off a very impressive performance in Week 16; if the team wants to end 2018 on a high note, they’ll have to find a way to replicate that success Sunday.

6. Don’t let the atmosphere dictate what you want to do

I’ve been to Arrowhead a few times now, and let me tell you; it’s loud.

Not only is it loud from whistle to whistle, but it’s usually always cold, and a cold, loud, rowdy environment makes things pretty challenging for the opposition.

The Chiefs really need this game, but playing spoiler would be the best start to 2019 I could ask for.

It’s going to be jumping Sunday afternoon at Arrowhead Stadium, but if there’s any person who can quiet the noise and get to work, it’s Derek Carr.

Man I wished I could have seen this one; I'll have to catch the highlights on YouTube; I get the feeling that the score was a bit deceiving as to the kind of game we had defensively, but having four straight turnovers always helps.
