OddsShark Super Computer Prediction:
Chiefs 22.9
Raiders 26.6

Notable Quotables:

“[LeSean McCoy] looked like he still had the vision and the quickness. He has good feet and he has that vision, that patience. You're talking about a future Hall of Fame guy who is at the end of his career. He's getting there. He's 31 years old. ... He is really staying on top of his game the older he has gotten.

--Chiefs Head Coach Andy Reid

Raiders:

“Obviously, [Antonio Brown] is a big distraction. Took a lot of people's minds and stuff going into this week. But, you know, I think we did a great job of just letting that [only] be a distraction, let it be what it was and just keep working."

--Raiders WR Tyrell Williams

The Raiders impressed against
the Broncos – especially on de-
fense. That unit was suffocat-

real challenge in that Kansas

down Patrick Mahomes? I don't
think so. Chiefs will roll again to
another road victory, even with-

It was 53 years ago that the Kansas City Chiefs and the Oakland Raiders met at the Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum for the very first time.

Quarterback Len Dawson tossed three touchdown passes and tailback Mike Garrett rushed for another score in that game as Kansas City defeated the Raiders in a classic matchup of original American Football League franchises.

One of the league’s greatest rivalries developed in the years following that matchup, and more than five decades later, the two teams will meet again in Oakland on Sunday for the final time – and on the infield dirt of the multi-sport facility, no less - before the Raiders relocate to Las Vegas in 2020.

And while the Chiefs are 10-2 against Oakland since 2013 – where they’re averaging 30.5 points-per-game - the rivalry is still very real for Head Coach Andy Reid.

"I think when you step into that stadium and when you're out there, you understand the rivalry. The guys that have been here, they get it,” Reid said. “It’s probably as close are you're going to have to a college atmosphere, as far as rivalries go. Likewise, when the Raiders come here, I think they realize that. I think it's a neat thing. Our fans feel it, their fans feel it and the players feel it."

The rivalry will of course continue following the move, but the circumstances inevitably create some additional significance to an already important game between divisional opponents, and if the new-look Raiders’ performance last week against Denver was any indication, the finale could be a good one.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bB8Zsi3ODiE

Oakland added several fresh faces this offseason ahead of their second campaign under Head Coach Jon Gruden, and from wide receiver Tyrell Williams’ big game to an impressive performance by veteran linebacker Vontaze Burfict, those new pieces paid dividends in a season-opening victory over the Broncos on Monday Night Football.

The Raiders raced out to a two-touchdown lead in that contest while holding Denver out of the end zone until late in the fourth quarter, demonstrating a certain intensity throughout.

“Those guys are playing with a ton of energy. Those young guys they had last year have elevated their game and the guys they brought in are playing with a ton of confidence,” said Chiefs’ quarterback Patrick Mahomes. “It’ll be a great test for us. They have a lot of different coverages and different blitzes, so for us, it’s going to be an early test and we’re going to need a good game plan.”

At the middle of Oakland’s re-shaped defense is Burfict, a long-time member of the Cincinnati Bengals who signed with the Raiders this offseason while re-uniting with defensive coordinator Paul Guenther, who coached Burfict in Cincinnati.

Injuries have slowed the eight-year veteran’s production in recent years, but he was impressive during his Raiders’ debut last week in both his play on the field and his ability to lead the defense.

"I think most of all, he knows that defense inside and out,” Reid said. “You give him different looks and he can be the adjuster on that who get guys lined up. From a coaching standpoint, he helps out in that way. He’s like a coach on the field that way."

https://static.clubs.nfl.com/image/private/t_editorial_landscape_12_desktop/f_auto/chiefs/znm99hqbzgkvla1sqqwc.jpg

Burfict lines up behind a talented defensive front that also features a slew of new faces such as defensive ends Clelin Ferrell – the No. 4 overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft – and veteran Benson Mayowa, who combined to tally six pressures and three sacks in last week’s victory.

The secondary has benefitted from some new additions as well, as rookie cornerback Trayvon Mullen – a second-round pick in the draft last spring – and former Los Angeles Rams’ safety Lamarcus Joyner have joined a defensive backfield that already featured a pair of solid young players in safety Karl Joseph and cornerback Gareon Conley.

And while Oakland was dealt some bad news this week with the loss of rookie safety Johnathan Abram for the year due to a shoulder injury sustained in the season-opener, the defense as a whole at least appears to be much improved from the group that allowed an NFL-worst 29.2 points-per-game in 2018.

It all makes for an interesting matchup with the Chiefs’ offense, which is only a week removed from scoring 40 points on one of the league’s better defenses in the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Kansas City scored on each of their first seven drives in that contest, eventually becoming the first team to tally 40+ points against Jacksonville on the road in five years behind Mahomes’ 378 passing yards and a monster performance from wide receiver Sammy Watkins, who currently leads the NFL in receiving yards and touchdowns.

The Chiefs will be without electric wide out Tyreek Hill in Sunday’s game, but with pass-catchers like Watkins, tight end Travis Kelce, wide receiver Demarcus Robinson and rookie wide out Mecole Hardman available at Mahomes’ disposal, the offense still has plenty of firepower.

In fact, Chiefs’ Offensive Coordinator Eric Bieniemy spoke at length about Hardman – the Chiefs’ first selection in the 2019 Draft – and what he expects out of the speedy receiver on Sunday.

“Since we’ve been here, we’ve always had the ‘next man up’ approach. We coach our starters to be starters, but we also coach our guys who are backing up those guys to be starters, too,” Bieniemy said. “It’s his job now to make sure we don’t lose anything with him being out there. He understands the responsibility and the accountability to his teammates, the people in that room and to Tyreek, as well. Our guys get that, they understand that, and they live on that. So, we’re looking forward to him getting out there and making the most of the opportunity he’s being presented with.”

Conversely, the Chiefs’ defense will look to slow down a Raiders’ offensive attack that also includes plenty of new faces.

Williams – who caught 41 passes for 653 yards and five touchdowns last season for the Los Angeles Chargers - signed with Oakland over the offseason and represents a big-play threat in the passing game. Rookie tailback Josh Jacobs, meanwhile, rushed for 85 yards and two touchdowns in his professional debut after the Raiders selected the University of Alabama product with the No. 24 overall pick in the draft.

Both players – not to mention tight end Darren Waller, who caught seven passes for 70 yards against the Broncos – helped quarterback Derek Carr put together one of the best games of his career last week.

Carr completed 22-of-26 passes for 259 yards and a touchdown in the game, posting a 121.0 passer rating while leading the offense to convert on 10-of-14 third-down opportunities.

The sixth-year veteran is coming off an up-and-down year for Oakland and has historically struggled against the Chiefs – posting a 76.0 career passer rating - but Monday’s performance didn’t surprise Reid."[He had a] phenomenal game. I’ve [coached] him in the Pro Bowl before, so I got to know him as a kid,” Reid said. “Smart guy with a lot of talent. He's one heck of a player and we're aware of that. It's a great challenge for us when we play them."

https://static.clubs.nfl.com/image/private/t_editorial_landscape_12_desktop/f_auto/chiefs/euuf0gelwhzypc8kksft.jpg

Kansas City’s defense – which, much like Oakland, made a myriad of changes this offseason – will look to slow down Carr on Sunday as playmakers such as defensive end Frank Clark, safety Tyrann Mathieu and defensive tackle Chris Jones continue to develop within new Defensive Coordinator Steve Spagnuolo’s scheme.

In fact, Spagnuolo even dusted off some old film from classic bouts between the Chiefs and Raiders from decades past for inspiration on Sunday.

“It’s about being physical - the most physical team wins - and you can see guys talking smack on the field and off the field. [It’s about] just being ready, keeping your head on and just playing ball,” said linebacker Anthony Hitchens. “It’s going to be a physical match – there are going to be some bumps and bruises – and I’m looking forward to it.”

It’s been 19,356 days since the Chiefs won that first matchup at the Coliseum all those years ago, and on Sunday, Kansas City will look to end their time in Oakland the same way it started.

Chiefs-Raiders Preview

OAKLAND, Calif. -- Tyreek Hill streaking downfield for big receptions from Patrick Mahomes figured to be a major part of Kansas City's passing offense this year.

The Raiders were counting on technician Antonio Brown to get open on intermediate and deep balls to provide a needed spark in Oakland.

When these two AFC West rivals meet Sunday in the second game of the season in Oakland, they both will need to figure out how to thrive without their most dangerous receiving options.

"I'm big on next guy up," Chiefs coach Andy Reid said. "We've done that over the years and so I expect the next guys to step up and play. Nobody is alike, but most of the guys at this level have strengths, and so you play to their strengths and then you keep coaching them and teaching them to make their things that maybe they're not as strong better. But when you are putting your game plan together, you play to your strengths."

Hill was sidelined by a broken collarbone in a season-opening 40-26 win at Jacksonville. Sammy Watkins stepped up to fill that void last week with nine catches for 198 yards and three touchdowns.

Second-round pick Mecole Hardman also figures to carry a heavier load this week.

The Raiders did just fine in last week's 24-16 win over Denver two days after releasing Brown following weeks of turmoil and missed practices.

Tyrell Williams had six catches for 105 yards and a touchdown, showing he has the skills to be the No. 1 receiver the Raiders thought he could be when they made him their top target in free agency even before making the trade for Brown.

"It's definitely an opportunity I've been excited for," Williams said. "My second year in the league when Keenan Allen had gotten hurt, I kind of was the No. 1 receiver that year (for the Chargers). I kind of just went unnoticed I guess. Just getting this opportunity and being able to showcase this is exciting."

Tight end Darren Waller, whose career has been hampered by substance abuse issues, had seven catches for 70 yards and proved to be a matchup nightmare for Denver's defense.

Here are some other things to watch:

WORKHORSE BACK

One of the big questions surrounding running back Josh Jacobs after the Raiders drafted him 24th overall was how he'd handle the load of a featured back in the NFL after being a part-time player at Alabama. Jacobs had more than 15 carries in a game just twice in college but raced past that mark in his NFL debut when he ran 23 times for 85 yards and two TDs and caught a 28-yard pass. He became the first player since LaDainian Tomlinson in 2001 to gain at least 100 yards from scrimmage and score two rushing touchdowns in his debut.

"It was just something to show durability," he said. "That I can take 20 carries a game and still come out and be full."

OPPORTUNISTIC D

Since Reid took over as coach in Kansas City in 2013, the Chiefs lead the NFL with 26 defensive touchdowns. No opponent has been victimized more than the Raiders, who have given up four of those scores, including two thrown by Derek Carr in 2015 and last season. Carr has thrown nine career interceptions against the Chiefs, his most against any opponent.

BLIND SIDE

The Raiders saw big improvement from second-year left tackle Kolton Miller in the opener. After allowing an NFL-worst 14 sacks as a rookie, according to Sports Info Solutions, Miller completely shut down Denver's Bradley Chubb last week. He gets another tough test this week against Frank Clark, who had 2 1/2 sacks against Oakland last year when he was with Seattle and faced Miller on a gimpy knee.

"He's just stronger, he's more experienced, he's healthy," coach Jon Gruden said. "Those are three things that have taken his game to another level and he's got to continue to prove it every week."

END OF ERA

This game could be the final one played with infield dirt across the field. What once was a common sight in the era of multipurpose stadiums is now almost a relic as the Coliseum is the only remaining stadium used by NFL and baseball teams. The Raiders' next scheduled game in Oakland isn't until Nov. 3, after the end of the World Series, so the dirt will be gone for the final five home games of the season; they have a home game in London. The Raiders are set to move to Las Vegas next season, where dirt won't be an issue.

"It hurts. It hurts tackling and falling on that dirt," Raiders safety Karl Joseph said. "But that's part of who we are, the Raiders. I don't think I'll miss falling on that dirt too much.

From one AFC West opponent to another, the Oakland Raiders are set to host another division rival for the second straight week. To kickoff the 2019 season, the Silver and Black defeated the Denver Broncos at the Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum on Monday Night Football 24-16. Each phase of the game was dominant and hopefully the team can keep it going the Kansas City Chiefs this Sunday.

Head Coach Andy Reid's offense is electric and stopping it won't be easy. It's clear Raiders defensive coordinator Paul Guenther's defense has vastly improved from a season ago, and it'll be fun to watch them take on arguably their toughest offensive test of the season.

Before Sunday gets underway, let's take a look at who the experts are picking.

Score prediction: Take the Chiefs on Oakland’s
dirt in one of NFL’s storied rivalries
From The Kansas City Star (https://www.kansascity.com/sports/nfl/kansas-city-chiefs/article235040057.html)

By Blair Kerkhoff

September 13, 2019 05:00 AM, Updated September 13, 2019 06:12 PM

The Kansas City Chiefs (1-0) visit the Oakland Raiders (1-0) in a battle between original AFL members. Their rivalry is one of the NFL’s most intense, and this is likely the final game between the teams in Oakland — the Raiders are scheduled to relocate to Las Vegas next season.

The early date of this game means some of it will be played on the Coliseum’s dirt infield.

Line: Chiefs by 7 (opened 8 1/2)

Blair Kerkhoff’s prediction: Chiefs, 38-30

The Week 1 performances left both teams feeling encouraged. The Chiefs had things wrapped up at Jacksonville by the end of the third quarter, and the Raiders handled the Broncos at Oakland behind quarterback Derek Carr. It took Oakland a month to gets its first victory in Jon Gruden’s first season and the team started 1-8. Both teams lost a starter to injury last weekend. Chiefs wide receiver Tyreek Hill is expected to miss a few weeks with a sternoclavicular joint injury in his shoulder. Rookie Raiders safety Johnathan Abram tore a rotator cuff and will miss the season. The Chiefs have held the upper hand in this storied rivalry in the Andy Reid era, winning 10 of 12. Patrick Mahomes quarterbacked the Chiefs’ sweep last season. The Chiefs’ two losses under Reid have come in Oakland, the latest in 2017. A Raiders triumph in this one would be one of the weekend’s biggest upsets.

Not supposed to be peeking in on this ;-)

But, this is looking like a classic Chiefs-Raiders matchup.

Hold on to your hats.

Great job driving the length of the field & getting the score. Gave the Defense a nice rest.

The Chiefs have only 13 rushing yards. But, if you can't stop the Chiefs passing game & you give up 277 passing yards in one half, you got major problems.

matthewschiefs
09-15-2019, 05:41 PM
Great Job D!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

brdempsey69
09-15-2019, 05:45 PM
Over 300 passing yards & just about all of that came in the 2nd QTR. The Chiefs just ripped the Raiders guts out in this 2nd QTR.

Nice work by the young WR's stepping up and making plays.

brdempsey69
09-15-2019, 05:51 PM
Looks like the Defense made adjustments of some sort & played solid (which is all they need, they don't have to be spectacular) after the Raiders scored 10 points.

Okay I have arrived what ahve i missed. How has the defense looked?

The Defense looked shaky in the 1st Qtr, but solid in the 2nd QTR & the Offense exploded for 28 points in the 2nd QTR, with Mahomes throwing 4 TD passes.

Well the offense laid goose eggs in the second half. That's not good. I think next week against Baltimore will be a true test. I think the hype is real about them.

brdempsey69
09-15-2019, 07:52 PM
Bears get a game-winning FG to sink the Donkeys to 0-2. And the Chargers lost, as well.

The Ravens always play tough at Arrowhead. Expect to see nothing but their best. KC will just have to be better.

I'm just glad our offense and receivers got some experience without hill before ravens.

I had to leave after the first quarter. Had I known they were waiting on me to leave to start playing football I would have never tuned in. LOL! THAT being said, I hear that the officiating throughout the game was not the best.
