OddsShark Super Computer Prediction:
Chiefs 20.1
Ravens 21.8

Notable Quotables:

“As long as I feel like [RB Darwin Thompson] knows what he's doing, I'm good with it. He'll stick it up in there and hit you. It's just a matter of seeing it. He's young so he hasn't seen everything there is to see. He's getting there. I feel comfortable with him in there."

--Chiefs Head Coach Andy Reid

Ravens:

“I think you're going to see two great quarterbacks in this game. We might be seeing the next Brady-Manning matchup, Ali-Frazier, Magic-Bird. You don't know, but the excitement of it [is undeniable]."

--Ravens Defensive coordinator Don "Wink" Martindale

In a season chock full of thrills, this moment stood out amongst the rest.

It was 4th-and-9 with just over a minute left, and if the Kansas City Chiefs couldn’t move the chains, the game was over. The Baltimore Ravens – led by rookie quarterback Lamar Jackson – had just taken the lead, and with their backs up against the wall, Kansas City needed somebody to make a play.

What came next was epic, plain and simple, as quarterback Patrick Mahomes found wide receiver Tyreek Hill on the run for a 48-yard gain. The Chiefs went on to tie things up – again on a fourth-down play, no less - before winning in overtime, sealing perhaps the most-exciting win of the year.

“That was probably my favorite [throw of the year] given the situation. [I just gave] the guys a chance, Tyreek made a great play on it and we ended up winning the game at home,” Mahomes recalled earlier this week. “That pretty much gave us home-field advantage last year in the playoffs and everything like that. It was one of my favorite throws, if not my favorite, so far.”

"I liked him a lot coming out of college - I mentioned that back then. He's playing well and does a lot of things well,” said Head Coach Andy Reid. “Everybody kind of goes to his run game, but he can throw the football. He's doing it with accuracy, and he does it from all different levels. Whether it's in the roll-out or in the pocket, he's got it down."

https://static.clubs.nfl.com/image/private/t_editorial_landscape_12_desktop/f_auto/chiefs/aiihewab1fxs3igtjt0c.jpg

Jackson has flourished in the scheme designed by Offensive Coordinator Greg Roman – who was elevated to the position this offseason – and it doesn’t hurt that the former first-round pick has a pair of dynamic young pass-catchers at his disposal in tight end Mark Andrews and wide receiver Marquise “Hollywood” Brown.

Those two players alone have accounted for 60 percent of Jackson’s completions this season, with Andrews hauling in 16 grabs for 220 yards and two touchdowns while Brown – Baltimore’s first-round pick in the draft last spring – already has 12 catches for 233 yards and a pair of scores.

Tailback Mark Ingram, meanwhile, is averaging 5.7 yards per rush thus far, combing with Jackson to form the league’s-most productive rushing attack (447 yards) by a wide margin.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4LsqSdsn3iI

Each of those players – with Jackson in the middle commanding the offense – combines to present a strong task for the Chiefs’ defense which, after yielding 10 quick points last Sunday, held the Raiders scoreless through the final three quarters of play.

“[That was] a confidence boost for us. You know, we don’t think about last season. I think each and every week - especially in the NFL - you just try to get better at something, and I thought last week that we [did that],” said Chiefs’ safety Tyrann Mathieu. “This week presents a whole new challenge for us - I think it’s the first time we’ve played a quarterback with that kind of big-play ability like Lamar Jackson. He’s going to test us a lot Sunday, but I think it’s just important to get off the field and get the ball back to our offense…[because] they’re going to use as much clock as they possibly can to keep Patrick off the field.”

Mahomes, of course, is off to a stellar start in his second season as Kansas City’s starting quarterback. The 24-year-old signal caller leads the NFL in passing yards (821) and yards per completion (14.9) while matching Jackson for the league-lead in passing touchdowns (7).

In fact, Sunday’s matchup between Mahomes and Jackson will mark the first time in the Super Bowl Era that two quarterbacks who have completed 70 percent of their passes while throwing for 7+ touchdowns and no interceptions have met this early in a season.

And while the Chiefs’ electric passing attack will once again be without Hill on Sunday, others have emerged in lieu of the All-Pro’s absence. It was wide receiver Sammy Watkins in Week 1, who exploded for 198 yards and three touchdowns against Jacksonville. Fellow receiver Demarcus Robinson was then responsible for a monster game a week later, hauling in six catches for 172 yards and two scores.

https://static.clubs.nfl.com/image/private/t_editorial_landscape_12_desktop/f_auto/chiefs/vv3sm6aehku0xbepriqf.jpg

Mahomes will surely provide his pass-catchers with the opportunity to make some plays once again this week in what appears to be their toughest defensive matchup yet.

Baltimore is yielding less than two yards per rushing attempt this season and has tallied 43 quarterback pressures with their pass rush, ultimately surrendering just 27 total points in their two games.

It’s a defense that includes some new faces - including All-Pro safety Earl Thomas – but has maintained its reputation as one of the league’s better units amidst some turnover.

“Everyone does their job [on that defense], I think that’s the biggest thing with that whole team. They’re going to be sound and they’re going to bring pressure, but there’s not going to be breakdowns in coverages at the same time,” Mahomes said. “They know what each guy’s role is on the defense, so it may not be one guy they have rushing, but they have a lot of very, very good players that are going to do their jobs the right way and trust each other.”

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1DkvBOv2TR8&feature=youtu.be

It’s worth mentioning that the Chiefs will be attacking that defense without tailback Damien Williams and left tackle Eric Fisher in addition to Hill on Sunday, but when asked to speak specifically about Fisher’s absence along the offensive line, the coaching staff emphasized the mentality that they’ve been preaching since Reid arrived in Kansas City seven years ago.

"It's next man up,” said Offensive Coordinator Eric Bieniemy. “Injuries happen, but like I’ve said in the past, we coach our starters not to get beat by our backup players and we coach our backup players to make sure that they're preparing themselves to be starters. Those guys are ready."

And it certainly helps that the Chiefs will have the crowd behind them for the first time this season as Kansas City kicks off the home-slate at Arrowhead Stadium. The Chiefs are 13-3 in front of their home crowd since 2017, and if you ask Coach Reid, the advantage is all too real.

"I think it'll be crazy. I love it. The players feel it, which is important, and then the other team feels it. It's a great experience,” Reid said. “For those that haven't come, you need to get a ticket and get to the game. It's unbelievable. We love it when the ground starts shaking there."

The ground will almost certainly be shaking on Sunday afternoon.

Chiefs-Ravens Preview

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Patrick Mahomes and the high-flying Kansas City Chiefs have been the talk of the NFL for months, their innovation and points-a-plenty style making them one of the league's most entertaining offenses.

They might not even be the best one on the field Sunday.

That's because for all the gaudy numbers the Chiefs hung on Jacksonville and Oakland in roaring to a 2-0 start, Lamar Jackson and the Baltimore Ravens have been even more prolific.

They lead the league in total offense and points; Kansas City is merely third and fourth. They also lead in time of possession and rushing, they're fourth in passing and third-down percentage rate, and like the Chiefs they have yet to turn over the ball this season.

So what is making it all click for Jackson and the Ravens?

"He's does a lot of things well," Chiefs coach Andy Reid said. "Everyone kind of goes to his run game but he can throw the football. He's doing it with accuracy and he can do it all different levels, whether that's rolling out or in the pocket.

"He has talent around him for sure," Reid added, "but the way it's slowed down for him, his reads are great and all those little things end up being big things."

Just ask Mahomes, who mastered so many of those little things while rolling to league MVP in his first season as the Chiefs' starter. And all he's done for an encore is throw for 821 yards and seven TDs without an interception through the first two weeks of his season.

In other words, Mahomes vs Jackson should be a compelling game-within-a-game on Sunday.

Just like it was last year.

The Chiefs rallied downfield in the final minute of regulation, Mahomes converting a fourth down with an audacious throw to Tyreek Hill before finding Damien Williams for the tying touchdown. Harrison Butker added the winning field goal in overtime in a crucial December matchup.

"Of course we'll watch last year's game," Ravens coach John Harbaugh said, "but teams change so much, and they watch the game, too. So it's always a new game. ... You try to predict something and all of a sudden it gets blown up in your face. That, to me, is the beauty of this league."

As two of the AFC's top teams prepare to meet at Arrowhead Stadium, here are things to know:

INJURY INTRIGUE

The Chiefs, already missing Hill to a broken collarbone, are without left tackle Eric Fisher after he underwent core muscle surgery earlier this week. They also could play without Williams (knee) and fellow running back LeSean McCoy (ankle), who have been hobbled by injuries.

Yet nobody on the Kansas City sideline sounds too concerned.

"We have depth everywhere," Mahomes said. "We have guys that can come in and do the job."

AWESOME ANDREWS

Ravens tight end Mark Andrews leads the team with 16 catches, has a pair of 100-yard games, has scored twice and has a knack for making a big play on third down.

"He knows how to get open," Harbaugh said. "Mark has really showed up the last two weeks."

There are times when Andrews will even alter the pattern to get open. If there was a lamppost and a car on the field, Andrews would find the seam between them -- "I tell Mark all the time, `We're going to play street ball,' and that's what the case is," Jackson said.

PUNCH LINE

Punter Dustin Colquitt is accustomed to the old-man jokes as the 37-year-old elder-statesman in the locker room, and he's heard plenty of jokes about never having to work given the way Kansas City has piled up points the past couple seasons.

In fact, Colquitt didn't get to punt at all during a Week 1 win over the Jaguars, though the two-time Pro Bowl selection held for plenty of field goals and extra points.

You might think that would make for an easy life, but Colquitt said it's the total opposite.

"Any time you're not working so much, every kick, snap, hold is more under the microscope," he explained. "It's fun watching that offense, but you can't get too caught up in it."

HOME AGAIN

After starting his NFL career with Baltimore, outside linebacker Pernell McPhee played 60 games over four seasons with the Ravens before spending three years in Chicago and another with the Redskins.

Now he's back where he started after signing as a free agent in May.

"It feels great. I'm back home in Baltimore," said McPhee, who won a Super Bowl ring with the Ravens in 2012, and who has five tackles the first two games this season. "This is the team that raised me. I'm trying to get back to the playoffs and win it all, that's it."

FRIENDLY FOE

One week after Reid matched wits with good buddy Jon Gruden in Oakland, he must do the same with Harbaugh, who learned the craft while coaching under him in Philadelphia. The two have remained close friends during their years apart, and Reid was giddy when Harbaugh won a Super Bowl title.

"He's a phenomenal coach," Reid said. "I love playing against him because I know they're well-coached and they have good players. We do this for the challenge, that experience on Sundays. I always look forward to playing those guys."

Stakes

A victory would make the Ravens 3-0 for the first time since 2016. The Chiefs have won nine straight games in September and will be playing their home opener after two road wins. Sunday’s outcome could impact AFC tiebreaker scenarios in December.

History

Kansas City holds a 5-3 edge in the all-time series, winning the last two. Last year’s meeting in Kansas City was a classic, with the Chiefs rallying to win, 27-24, in overtime. They converted twice on fourth down in the final minutes to send the game to overtime. Lamar Jackson threw for 147 yards and two touchdowns, while rushing for 67 yards on 14 carries. That loss has stuck with the Ravens.

Key Storylines

Does the Ravens’ defense have enough answers for Patrick Mahomes?

The Chiefs quarterback might be better than last season when he was the league’s MVP. He leads the NFL in passing yards and is coming off a 443-yard, four-touchdown performance against the Oakland Raiders. Mahomes can create something out of nothing, even when he’s pressured or when receivers are covered. If not for Mahomes’ late-game magic, the Ravens would have won in Kansas City last year. Mahomes will make plays, but the Ravens need to stop him in crucial moments.

How will the Ravens fare as underdogs for the first time this season?

This will be Kansas City’s home opener and Arrowhead is noisy under any circumstances. Take nothing away from the Ravens beating the Miami Dolphins and Arizona Cardinals, but Kansas City was 7-1 at home last season during the regular season. As a road team, you don’t come to Arrowhead and win unless you play very well. Dealing with the crowd noise will be an issue.

Can the Ravens’ offense keep the pressure on the Chiefs?

Baltimore is bringing a better offense to Kansas City this year, an improved Lamar Jackson surrounded by more playmakers. Jackson enters the game as the NFL’s highest-rated quarterback and the Ravens are attacking aggressively with new Offensive Coordinator Greg Roman as their play-caller. If the Ravens can’t contain Mahomes, they’ll need to score enough to win a shootout.

Key Matchups

OLB Matthew Judon vs. Chiefs LT Cam Erving
The Chiefs won’t have Pro Bowl left tackle Eric Fisher after he underwent groin surgery this week. Erving will start and he has a tough assignment in Judon, who’s off to a terrific start in a contract year with two sacks and five quarterback hits. Mahomes isn’t easy to sack, but consistent pressure on him would help the Ravens’ chances.

S Earl Thomas vs. Mahomes
Thomas had the quote of the week, saying “I plan to eliminate all the big plays.” The six-time Pro Bowl safety loves these moments, facing an elite quarterback willing to take chances. Mahomes hasn’t thrown an interception yet this season. Thomas hopes to change that.

WR Marquise Brown vs. Chiefs secondary
Averaging 19.4 yards per catch, Brown has added a big-play element to Baltimore’s offense as a rookie. He’s also displayed sure hands and a chemistry with Jackson that makes him comfortable targeting Brown in big spots. The Chiefs can strike quickly on offense, but with Brown, so can the Ravens.

Players to watch in Chiefs-Ravens: Tight ends
and defenders who prevent big plays
From The Kansas City Star (https://www.kansascity.com/sports/nfl/kansas-city-chiefs/article235235512.html)

The quarterback matchup between Patrick Mahomes and Lamar Jackson makes the the Chiefs-Ravens game the NFL’s marquee matchup this weekend. But keep your eyes on other playmakers, too, like both teams’ tight ends.

Travis Kelce, Chiefs, TE
Kelce is a standing member in this category, which speaks to his importance. He’s off to a good start and got into the end zone for the first time last week. His 19.5-yards-per-reception average is the NFL’s best among tight ends with at least 10 catches.

Frank Clark, Chiefs, DE
Containing a mobile quarterback like Lamar Jackson takes a full defensive effort, and the ends will play a vital role. Clark, Alex Okafor, Emmanual Ogbah and Tanoh Kpassagnon will bracket the ends and attempt to keep Jackson from getting outside. Clark said earlier this week that sacks tend to come in bunches. He’s looking for his first one this season. He didn’t go more than two games without a sack last season with the Seahawks.

Mark Andrews, Ravens, TE
Andrews as a touchdown in each of his first two games and leads the Ravens with 16 receptions. The second-year pro from Oklahoma has been on the injury list this week (foot) but is expected to play. Andrews said he admires Kelce’s approach to the game. “He has a lot of confidence,” Andrews said. “He has a lot of swagger to his game. It’s fun to watch a guy like that. I think there are certain aspects of that, what he brings to his team and his confidence and swagger — I bring some of that as well.”

Earl Thomas, Ravens, S
The Ravens have heard all week about Mahomes’ 41-yard connection to Hill on fourth down that helped the Chiefs win last season. And Thomas has heard enough. “Luckily the Ravens have me playing free safety, controlling the deep end,” Thomas said. “I plan on eliminating all the big plays.” If he’s right, Baltimore will have a big advantage. Mahomes leads the NFL with seven completions of at least 70 yards.

Good defense!

Bad first drive but then got better. ADJUSTMENTS WORK.

Way to get off the field defense!

Just got home in time to see the second TD!
I missed the 2nd TD because my paid IPTV service went down. By the time I switched to my back-up paid IPTV service, they were already in commercial. I saw the replay though.

I was concerned about Mahomes when I heard he got kicked in the head on the radio.

You DON'T. You just have to try to outscore them.

...and you can't!

matthewschiefs

Another overthrow by Jackson LOL

chiefnutz
09-22-2019, 02:21 PM

Andy you coward their is 10 second left run one more play you loser, if it doesnt work then kick the field goal

TopekaRoy
09-22-2019, 02:36 PM
Chiefs 23 - Ravens 6 at halftime!

For all we complain about this defense, they held the NFLs #1 offense (statistically) to just 6 first half points. And our offense is on pace to score 46! Not too shabby.

TopekaRoy
09-22-2019, 02:40 PM
Andy you coward their is 10 second left run one more play you loser, if it doesnt work then kick the field goal
Then you risk turning the ball over and getting nothing or Mahome's getting hurt and missing several games. If it was close I would agree with you but a 17 point lead will be hard to overcome.

matthewschiefs
09-22-2019, 02:50 PM
UGLY run d has shown up UGH

matthewschiefs
09-22-2019, 02:50 PM

matthewschiefs
09-22-2019, 02:54 PM
UGH Run D has to be better then that

Also make Ingram pay for that celebration

TopekaRoy
09-22-2019, 02:55 PM
Our defense is getting gashed by the run. There is no excuse for that when you KNOW they are going to run the football.

The good news is that our offense gets another chance to score!

Chiefster
09-22-2019, 02:57 PM
This defense parted like the Red Sea and made it easy for Ingram!

matthewschiefs
09-22-2019, 02:57 PM
Shady!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

TopekaRoy
09-22-2019, 02:58 PM

TopekaRoy
09-22-2019, 03:02 PM
And the rain will be a factor.

I checked he radar and it shouldn't last too long. I hope.

matthewschiefs
09-22-2019, 03:05 PM
When the Ravens have to throw they can't do much Playing a rb at QB isn't great sometimes :)

TopekaRoy
09-22-2019, 03:06 PM
Good 3-and-out there. D looked MUCH better against the run.

matthewschiefs
09-22-2019, 03:08 PM
Watkins!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

matthewschiefs
09-22-2019, 03:08 PM

TopekaRoy
09-22-2019, 03:18 PM
MatthewsChiefs, the announcer just asked the same question you did. "How do you stop these guys?"

brdempsey69
09-22-2019, 03:19 PM
After the beating that they laid on Miami on opening day, I had concerns about this game. Chiefs have been up to the challenge. Miami is simply not half-bad -- they are ALL BAD !!

matthewschiefs
09-22-2019, 03:21 PM
SACK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Make Lamar Jackson beat you throwing he can't

TopekaRoy
09-22-2019, 03:21 PM

matthewschiefs
09-22-2019, 03:22 PM
MatthewsChiefs, the announcer just asked the same question you did. "How do you stop these guys?"

It's a great question really

HOW DO YOU STOP THIS OFFENSE

Not only are announcers asking DCs around the league are

matthewschiefs
09-22-2019, 03:24 PM
We have reached the point where Lamar Jackson has to outscore Patrick Mahomes by 17 in the 4th just to get to OT.

In pretty good shape FINISH THIS GAME OFF

TopekaRoy
09-22-2019, 03:25 PM
Our defense is due for a turnover.

matthewschiefs
09-22-2019, 03:26 PM
Got to tackle better then that guys he should not have made that 1st down there

matthewschiefs
09-22-2019, 03:30 PM
WR pushed off but not sure it was bad enough they will overturn it

TopekaRoy
09-22-2019, 03:31 PM
OPI hardly ever gets overturned. They stick with the non-call unless it's a very obvious mistake.

TopekaRoy
09-22-2019, 03:33 PM
Bad call.

matthewschiefs
09-22-2019, 03:34 PM
Refs and Ravens get the score

TopekaRoy
09-22-2019, 03:37 PM
Bad call by Harbaugh to go for two. Now they can't tie it with a TD and an FG unless they go for two again (and get it).

matthewschiefs
09-22-2019, 03:50 PM
HUGE SACK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Needed that badly

TopekaRoy
09-22-2019, 03:50 PM
Sack by Clark!

matthewschiefs
09-22-2019, 03:51 PM
Ok offense put this game away

TopekaRoy
09-22-2019, 03:52 PM
Defense held them to 3. Offense needs one more score to put the game away. They also need to chew up as much clock as possible.

matthewschiefs
09-22-2019, 03:53 PM
WILLIAMS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Huge run

Not really mad he didn't score need time to come off that clock

TopekaRoy
09-22-2019, 03:54 PM
Go Williams. But don't score too fast!

matthewschiefs
09-22-2019, 03:57 PM
This is already a good drive they have used there T.O. and in field goal range :)

chiefnutz
09-22-2019, 04:00 PM
We needed those points

TopekaRoy
09-22-2019, 04:00 PM
11 point lead. Come on Chiefs. You got this!

TopekaRoy
09-22-2019, 04:03 PM
Just keep 'em out of the end zone.

TopekaRoy
09-22-2019, 04:05 PM
Uh oh!

matthewschiefs
09-22-2019, 04:06 PM
UGH Defense still has work to do for sure.

Ravens got some help from the refs today but still they have had chances to make plays and tackles and just didn't get it done

matthewschiefs
09-22-2019, 04:08 PM
A 1st down wins it LETS GET IT DONE GUYS

TopekaRoy
09-22-2019, 04:08 PM
5 point lead, 2 minutes left, Ravens have one time out left, it's dark and we're wearing sunglasses.

Hit it!

chiefnutz
09-22-2019, 04:12 PM
Got to get a 1st down. Don't give them the ball back.

matthewschiefs
09-22-2019, 04:12 PM
That will do it :)

TopekaRoy
09-22-2019, 04:13 PM
First down from the other Williams!

TopekaRoy
09-22-2019, 04:15 PM
Good win over a solid team. Game was closer than it should have been but a win is a win.

Coach
09-22-2019, 04:26 PM
So glad that they elected to pass on that final 3rd down versus running it up the middle. I don’t think Andy would have done that with Alex Smith at QB.
