Notable Quotables:
Chiefs:

"You have to be ready every week, in particular when you have an opportunity to play an AFC West opponent. It's really about us getting ourselves ready. That's what we're going to focus on this week. That's where all of our energy will go, and in making sure that we clean up and get better at some of the things that we need to take care of."
--Chiefs Head Coach Andy Reid

Raiders:

"We are going to have to earn every first down, we are going to have to work hard to get (Patrick) Mahomes off the field. They're coming off a bye week. They'll be fresh as daisies," Gruden said, "so it will be a great challenge in one of the great places and great rivalries in football.'
--Raiders Head Coach John Gruden

Prisco's Pick:

http://www.chiefscrowd.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=884&d=1484473553&thumb=1

The Raiders are playing consecutive
road games and are coming off a
terrible showing against the Jets on
the road. The Chiefs are coming off
a bye, which gives them a big edge.
Plus, they are the better team. Look
for Patrick Mahomes to light up
the Raiders.

It was 11 weeks ago that the Kansas City Chiefs compiled an electric, 28-point second quarter on their way to an early-season victory over the rival Oakland Raiders.

Quarterback Patrick Mahomes threw for 443 yards, wide receiver Demarcus Robinson posted the best performance of his career and the defense picked off Raiders’ quarterback Derek Carr twice as the Chiefs notched their 11th win in the last 13 meetings with Oakland.

In fact, since Head Coach Andy Reid arrived in Kansas City seven years ago, the Chiefs have averaged 30.3 points-per-game against Oakland while amassing the second-most points (394) of any team in that span against a single opponent. Even in the Chiefs’ two losses during that period, Kansas City fell by a combined five points.

It’s been a dominant stretch by the Chiefs over perhaps their greatest rival, and it’s a trend they’ll look to continue this weekend as Kansas City hosts the Raiders at Arrowhead with plenty on the line.

https://youtu.be/ksucgTG7f_k

The Chiefs currently own a one-game lead over Oakland in the AFC West standings, and with just five games left to go in the regular season, this weekend’s matchup is pivotal for both teams in the race for the division crown.

“The rivalry we have [with them] has been a good one for a long time, and [with it] being for first place in the division and setting yourself up for the rest of the season, it’s definitely going to be a big one,” Mahomes said. “We’re [also] excited for the opportunity to get to play at Arrowhead. We haven’t been here in a while. I haven’t played here in what seems like two months now, so I’m excited to play in front of our fans and against a great opponent.”

Indeed, it’s been 29 days since the Chiefs last played at Arrowhead in a thrilling victory over the Minnesota Vikings. Part of that delay is due to the bye last weekend, providing both some time off amidst the grind of the season and additional time to prepare.

“You get an extra week to watch your opponent, so that’s what I did,” said rookie wide receiver Mecole Hardman. “I watched [the Raiders], got my body right and just came into the week ready to go.”

It’s always worth noting that Chiefs’ Head Coach Andy Reid is the best in the business coming off of a bye, posting a 17-3 record during his illustrious career. Interestingly enough, it was nearly a year ago to the day that Kansas City returned from the bye to play Oakland last season, where they outlasted a Raiders’ rally to emerge with a seven-point victory.

That particular contest was Reid’s first time coaching across from Raiders’ Head Coach Jon Gruden as divisional opponents, but now with three matchups in the books – all victories for Reid – these two teams are plenty familiar with one another.

“I think both teams know each other. This is the fourth time that we've played that [coaching] staff, so they have a pretty good idea of what we do, and we have a pretty good idea of what they do,” Reid said. “We just have to get ourselves ready. The way that the National Football League is right now - and it really has been - there is a strive for parity and that's kind of where we're at in this league. You better be prepared every week."

That preparation will be key on Sunday as the Raiders have showed significant improvement offensively since the last meeting between the two teams nearly three months ago, much of which is due to the success of rookie tailback Josh Jacobs.

Jacobs – who the Raiders selected in the first round out of Alabama – ranks sixth in the NFL in rushing (957 yards) while posting the fourth-best rushing average (4.76) among players with at least 200 carries.

“They have one of the best running backs in the league,” said defensive lineman Chris Jones. “The way he makes people miss tackles and the way he cuts and gets upfield, he’s really helped them get better.”

https://static.clubs.nfl.com/image/private/t_editorial_landscape_12_desktop/f_auto/chiefs/gnmhwxpmybcqilqgargj.jpg

Jacobs tallied just 34 yards on the ground last week as the Raiders fell to the New York Jets on the road, but prior to that, the five-foot-10, 220-pound Jacobs had amassed at least 100 rushing yards in four of his last six games.

Elsewhere on offense, the Raiders’ top targets through the air are tight end Darren Waller (59 catches, 707 yards, 3 touchdowns) and wide receiver Tyrell Williams (32 catches, 480 yards, 5 touchdowns), both of whom have helped Raiders’ quarterback Derek Carr compile one of his best statistical seasons as a professional.

Carr currently owns career-highs in completion percentage (70.9), yards-per-attempt (7.8) and passer rating (101.1), leading Oakland to victories in five of their last eight games.

“He’s a rhythm thrower. It’s all about timing,” Jones said. “The timing Carr has with his receivers is phenomenal, so he’s able to get the ball out fast. For us, we just need to keep rushing and get to him.”

The Chiefs have found plenty of success doing just that lately, racking up 21 sacks – the fourth-most in the NFL – since Week 7, but it won’t be easy. Oakland has yielded the fewest sacks in the NFL this season (16), providing the pass-rush with an intriguing challenge on Sunday.

On the other side of the ball, the Chiefs’ offense is set to have wide receiver Tyreek Hill back after the electric pass-catcher missed the majority of Kansas City’s victory over Los Angeles with a hamstring injury. The Chiefs won’t have tailback Damien Williams available as he deals with a rib injury, but aside from Williams, this will mark the healthiest Kansas City’s offense has been since Week 1.

https://static.clubs.nfl.com/image/private/t_editorial_landscape_12_desktop/f_auto/chiefs/cg4zdytasapae3xizaau.jpg

Mahomes, Hill and company will line up against an Oakland defense that features several young playmakers, including rookie pass-rushers Maxx Crosby (7.5 sacks) and Clelin Ferrell (3.5 sacks), making for a potentially thrilling game with first place in the division up for grabs.

Simply put, these kinds of games are what it’s all about.

“You put things on the line here and you get to this part of the season and things count for both teams,” Reid said. “It should be a great game and I know Arrowhead will be rocking here on this Thanksgiving weekend. They’ll be ready to go, and it should be a great environment for a game.”

Chiefs-Raiders Preview

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Jon Gruden was asked this week whether he thought his Oakland Raiders were looking ahead to their AFC West showdown with the Kansas City Chiefs when they were walloped by the New York Jets.

"No, not with this team," the Raiders coach replied. "Nuh-uh. No. Uh-uh."

Well, the Chiefs have their undivided attention now.

The Raiders (6-5) head to Arrowhead Stadium on Sunday knowing full well that their chances of winning the division -- and making the playoffs -- rest heavily on the outcome. Win and they are not only tied for first place, but they wipe out the tiebreaker Kansas City (7-4) owns by virtue of their Week 2 win in Oakland; lose and they are merely another .500 team treading water.

"We are going to have to earn every first down, we are going to have to work hard to get (Patrick) Mahomes off the field. They're coming off a bye week. They'll be fresh as daisies," Gruden said, "so it will be a great challenge in one of the great places and great rivalries in football.

"Hopefully it brings out a much better performance in us."

The Raiders couldn't do much worse than they did in their 34-3 loss to the Jets. Derek Carr threw for just 127 yards with an interception while Josh Jacobs was held to 34 yards rushing.

The defense? It didn't fare a whole lot better.

But the Chiefs also know better than to overlook the Raiders, even though they've dominated the series since Andy Reid rolled into town. It's a rivalry steeped in not only tradition but hatred, one that traces its roots to the earliest days of the old AFL.

It's the kind of rivalry that spawned the "throw the records out" cliches, even though records just happen to be so relevant this week that the game was flexed to an afternoon kickoff.

"We don't really care what happened (against the Jets). It doesn't matter in the National Football League," Reid said. "You have to be ready every week, in particular when you have an opportunity to play an AFC West opponent. It's really about us getting ourselves ready. That's what we're going to focus on this week. That's where all of our energy will go, and in making sure that we clean up and get better at some of the things that we need to take care of."

As the Chiefs and Raiders prepare to meet in a divisional showdown, here are some things to know:

WEEK OF REST

The Chiefs expect to get several of their starters closer to 100 percent after having to wait until Week 12 for their bye. Wide receiver Tyreek Hill, who hurt his hamstring against the Chargers in Mexico City, is likely to play thanks largely to the extra week of rest.

HOUSE OF HORRORS

Carr has a couple of memorable wins at home against Kansas City, including the first of his career after a 0-10 start in 2014 and a dramatic primetime comeback two years ago. But it's been a different story at Arrowhead Stadium, where Carr has lost all five of his starts. He has a quarterback rating of 61.9 in those games, the worst of any road venue in which he's played multiple games.

BIG PLAYS

The Raiders have struggled to limit big plays (20 yards or more) in the passing game, allowing a league-high 55 after the seven they gave up to the Jets. The Chiefs had eight of those during their win at Oakland, and six of those came when Kansas City scored all 28 of its points in the second quarter.

ANOTHER MAHOMES-IE

Gruden has been vocal in his praise for the Chiefs' second-year starter, and that didn't change after watching him throw for 443 yards and four touchdowns when the teams met in Oakland.

"He makes and attempts throws I have not seen before," Gruden said. "When he gets hot, he can really hurt you. We just got to keep the ball in front of us. We can't give up the vertical bombs, we just can't do it. We've got to work hard this week on preventing that, and it was jaw-dropping the display he put on there for about six minutes, and we got to try and eliminate that obviously."

KEEP WARM

The Raiders have lost nine straight games played in temperatures below 50 degrees and are likely set for another cold-weather game against the Chiefs. Oakland was held to three points last week on a cold, wet day against the Jets. Gruden said he can't simulate that weather in California, though, so the Raiders will just have to learn to deal with it.

"I'm not a genius. I'm not Thomas Edison," he said. "We're just trying to show pictures of people that are cold that deal with cold. I don't know. We're not going to overanalyze it."

Raider Nation, I hope you made it through Thanksgiving well, and enjoyed some quality time with your friends and family.

While you’re likely posted up on the couch trying to motivate yourself to walk to the kitchen for another turkey sandwich – which sounds pretty amazing, to be honest – the Silver and Black are on their way to Kanas City for a Week 13 date against Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs.

It’s hard to overstate how important Sunday’s matchup at Arrowhead Stadium is; let’s take a look at six things that we’ll be watching once the action gets underway.

1. How does the run game respond?

Through much of 2019, the run game has been the lifeblood of the Oakland Raiders’ offense.

With an absolute behemoth of an offensive line, as well as Josh Jacobs and Co., in the backfield, the Silver and Black – when they’re at their most dynamic offensively – have leaned heavily on the run game.

Well, as of late, the Raiders haven’t been as effective as they’d like to be moving the ball on the ground, and last weekend at MetLife Stadium the group was held to just 68 rushing yards – their collective lowest output of 2019.

Yes, the New York Jets boast the toughest run defense in the NFL, but all the same, Jacobs and his pals, just couldn’t find a way to garner any traction on the ground last week.

Luckily for them, the Chiefs rank 30th in stopping the run, so hopefully the Raiders can take advantage of that, and return to their typically dominant ways on the ground this weekend.

2. Stop the big plays

When you’re talking about the Kansas City Chiefs, that conversation has to begin with Patrick Mahomes and the dynamic offense that he leads.

Let’s not forget that when these two teams first met in Week 2, after the Silver and Black built a 10-point lead, Mahomes and Co., put up 28 unanswered points in the span of about 14 minutes.

Only three teams in the NFL have scored more points in 2019 than the Chiefs, and if the Silver and Black want to keep things close, they’re going to have to find a way to limit what KC wants to do offensively AKA let Mahomes run wild, improvise, then heave a deep ball down the field to one of his targets.

Tyreek Hill has been absolutely unreal the past two weeks for the Chiefs, and the speedy wide receiver is averaging just under 19 yards per reception, so Trayvon Mullen, Daryl Worley and the rest of the Raiders’ defensive backs are going to have their hands full Sunday afternoon at Arrowhead Stadium.

The Raiders know exactly what the Chiefs want to do for four quarters, let’s see if they can stop them.

3. Limit the penalties

The self-inflicted wounds have been a thorn in the side of the Silver and Black all 2019, mainly getting penalties at inopportune times.

You can blame those flags on a relatively young team adjusting to life in the NFL, judgment calls that haven’t gone the Raiders’ way, or just bad luck, but the fact remains, Jon Gruden’s team has been one of the most penalized in the league this year.

The group’s 92 total penalties rank 29th in the NFL, and the Raiders’ 814 total penalty yards are the most in the league save for one team. Now, sitting a game over .500, those penalties haven’t necessarily derailed what the team wants to do, but with all due respect, there’s a big difference between racking up penalties against the Cincinnati Bengals compared to the Chiefs.

Andy Reid’s team – even though they’re just 2-2 over their last four games – is still one of the best in the NFL, and the Raiders are going to have to play a clean game if they want to earn a very tough road win this weekend.

4. Will Daniel Carlson get back on track?

Let me start by saying this – Coach Gruden has already stated that he’s not concerned about the second-year kicker, and if he’s not worried, neither am I.

Last year, Carlson was an aberration for the Silver and Black, but over the past three games, No. 8 has missed three field goals and an extra point and hasn’t been the lockdown placekicker he was just a year ago.

As I said, Gruden has publicly backed the former Auburn Tiger, and I don’t think there’s reason to be too concerned about Carlson just yet, but regardless, I’m sure the athletic kicker would like to get back to his typical ways, and doing that in Kansas City would be a welcome treat for the team as a whole.

The Silver and Black are going to need to take advantage of all their scoring chances Sunday afternoon, so keep an eye on Carlson to see if he can do his part.

https://scontent-dfw5-1.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/78793948_3020324511328590_5765193713055694848_n.jp g?_nc_cat=101&_nc_ohc=Q96vQIKVxYgAQlttHTkAKXq7vkMPjBo9C93R3IAU-bqNpfACnY2sQMLUw&_nc_ht=scontent-dfw5-1.xx&oh=6815faa723e311fc75020c0d6e6cc08f&oe=5E88705C (https://www.raiders.com/video/raiders-give-back-for-thanksgiving-and-the-threat-of-tyreek-hill)

5. Does Mad Maxx make it three in a row?

Serious question; is there a defensive end playing better football right now than Maxx Crosby?

After tallying four sacks two weeks ago against the Bengals, Crosby followed that performance up with another sack last week at MetLife Stadium, so for those of you keeping track at home, that’s five sacks in the past eight quarters for the No. 106 pick in this year’s NFL Draft.

Crosby is up 7.5 sacks on the year and has proven to be a dynamic weapon off the edge, but he’s going to have his hands full against a Chiefs offensive line that has surrendered just 19 sacks all season.

Patrick Mahomes is a slippery character in the pocket, so combine that with the fact that Kansas City has a really good offensive line, and Crosby and the rest of the Silver and Black will have their collective hands full bringing down the reigning MVP behind the line of scrimmage.

Crosby has had a wildly productive two weeks, let’s see if he tally a sack for the third consecutive game.

6. Mother Nature

You know we had to bring up the weather.

As of right now –and per usual, this is subject to change – the forecast for Sunday in Kansas City is a high of 37 degrees, with a low of 26.

Last weekend, the Silver and Black had their hands full with the rainy, windy conditions of East Rutherford, New Jersey, and while it doesn’t look we’ll get rain (for now) this weekend at Arrowhead, we’ll have to see what Mother Nature has in store for Week 13.

In my humble opinion, much of the “weather” talk has been just a tad overblown this week, but if the Raiders can find a way to fly back to Northern California with a win in tow, I don’t think we’ll be hearing much about it going forward.

Bring on the Chiefs.
