Notable Quotables:
Chiefs:

"One of the reasons you bring [RB Spencer Ware] back is just his production when he was here before. And he knows the offense. He doesn't have to go through that whole thing . . . We'll see at the end of the week how it fits in. He's not going to be your starter and play every down. That's not what he's doing."
--Chiefs Head Coach Andy Reid

Patriots:

"... Texans did a good job tonight all the way across the board, in every area; they were just better than we were tonight. ... we just gotta coach better, we gotta play better. We just gotta do better than we did tonight. Just weren't good enough in any area."
--Patriots Head Coach Bill Belichick on loss to the Texans

Prisco's Pick:

http://www.chiefscrowd.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=884&d=1484473553&thumb=1

This should be a fun rematch
of the AFC Championship
Game from last January. The
Patriots are struggling on
offense, but I don't think that
will be the case here. Look for
Tom Brady to change that in
this one. I think he will outplay
Patrick Mahomes as the Patriots
win an important game.

It was nearly a year ago that these two teams met with a berth in the Super Bowl on the line.

The Kansas City Chiefs rallied to score 24 points in the fourth quarter, forcing overtime, but the New England Patriots found the end zone on their next drive and the rest is history.

It was an instant classic between a pair of teams that have gone head-to-head in some heavyweight contests over the years, and on Sunday, the Chiefs and Patriots will add another chapter to one of the league’s top budding rivalries.

This will mark the sixth time the two squads have played since 2014, with New England edging Kansas City in each of the last two games – both of which took place last season - by a combined nine points. The Chiefs last beat the Patriots back in 2017 in Foxborough behind a 42-point performance on offense and also defeated New England on Monday Night Football at Arrowhead in 2014.

https://youtu.be/GDk8UC0unRQ

Each matchup has provided plenty of thrills – from 142.2 decibels of sound booming throughout Arrowhead to wide receiver Tyreek Hill’s three-touchdown game in 2017 – and that shouldn’t be a surprise. In fact, the Patriots (84) and Chiefs (73) lead the AFC in victories since 2013. New England is responsible for the most wins in the NFL during that span while Kansas City ranks third, checking in just behind Seattle (74).

Additionally, Sunday’s coaching matchup between the Chiefs’ Andy Reid and New England’s Bill Belichick will mark the first meeting between two coaches who each own 200+ regular-season victories since Don Shula and Tom Landry went head-to-head in 1987.

Simply put, these two teams – and their coaches - are plenty familiar with one another.

"I think they know us, and we know them. You get in and you battle. We've played them quite a few times here over the last few years,” said Head Coach Andy Reid. “It just comes down to execution on both sides of the ball and on special teams.”

Kansas City has consistently executed offensively better than just about anyone else against the Patriots lately, averaging 34.8 points-per-game over the course of the last five meetings - the best mark league-wide versus New England – and they’ll look to keep that trend going this go-around against one of the top defenses in the NFL.

https://static.clubs.nfl.com/image/private/t_editorial_landscape_12_desktop/f_auto/chiefs/gw21lukalinrefhsbjoi.jpg

The Patriots are yielding a league-best 12.1 points-per-game - surrendering more than 14 points just twice - under the direction of Belichick, who is considered by many to be the greatest defensive mind in the history of the game due in large part to his ability to change schemes from game to game.

"When you play Bill and the Patriots, you're going to get something different every week,” Reid said. “That's where you bank on knowing your scheme and fundamentals, knowing your players and how they play.”

“They’re a team that’s going to have stuff that we didn’t necessarily prepare for because they’re going to do things they haven’t done in maybe two or three years,” quarterback Patrick Mahomes added. “We’ve watched the tape and looked at everything they can possibly do, but whenever we get these unscouted looks, it’s about me finding the best way to get us into the best play and not take these negative plays while keeping the offense moving.”

https://static.clubs.nfl.com/image/private/t_editorial_landscape_12_desktop/f_auto/chiefs/xbjakj9ljekcmgfyzx4k.jpg

Mahomes has performed well in his two career outings against New England, tossing seven touchdowns to just two interceptions while posting a 113.2 passer rating despite ultimately coming up short in both contests, and as effective as the Patriots’ defense has been this season, they’ve struggled lately against top-tier competition.

The Baltimore Ravens tallied 37 points against New England back in Week 9 and just last Sunday, the Houston Texans found the end zone four times as they dealt the Patriots their second loss of the year.

It’s a recipe the Chiefs will aim to replicate on Sunday.

“I think the biggest thing was when they had their opportunities, they hit them. I think that’s the big thing,” Mahomes said. “They’re not going to give us a lot of opportunities - they’re a very good defense and very sound with what they do. It’s about taking what’s there and when you get the big shot or the big play, you hit that and score touchdowns when you do.”

Conversely, the Chiefs’ defense has its sights on slowing down Patriots’ quarterback Tom Brady and a New England attack that’s struggled of late. In fact, the Patriots are averaging just 18 points-per-game over their last four contests and have been outscored by nearly two touchdowns in that span.

https://static.clubs.nfl.com/image/private/t_editorial_landscape_12_desktop/f_auto/chiefs/oasosakmgtpqi77a1nkh.jpg

Though regardless of their difficulties on offense lately, Kansas City isn’t taking New England – world champions in three of the last five seasons – lightly, especially after falling by the narrowest of margins in the AFC Championship Game last January.

“I feel like we’re a better team than we were last year defensively. We’re stronger and I think we learned from our mistakes against them,” said defensive tackle Derrick Nnadi. “Coming into this week, we have a bigger chip on our shoulder and we’re ready to play this game.”

That means containing wide receiver Julian Edelman - the Patriots’ top weapon in the passing game with 82 catches for 915 yards and five touchdowns on the year - and tailback James White, who has 720 yards from scrimmage this season.

https://youtu.be/cS-Rfi8-1m4

If the Chiefs can do that defensively - maintaining the momentum they’ve built over the unit’s last two outings against Los Angeles and Oakland – while executing the league’s third-best scoring offense and limiting mistakes, Kansas City has as good a shot as any to end the Patriots’ 18-game winning streak at home.

The Chiefs have Super Bowl aspirations, and as the old adage goes, if you want to be the best, you have to beat the best. New England has been just that for decades, and with the homestretch of the season underway, the Chiefs have a shot to prove that they belong in that conversation.

“We have to come prepared, and I think we definitely will be,” said wide receiver Sammy Watkins. “I feel like we’re going to play the best game that we’ve played, and I can’t wait.”

Chiefs-Patriots Preview

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. -- Chiefs coach Andy Reid's expectations are simple heading into Kansas City's latest matchup with the Patriots.

"I think they know us, and we know them. You get in and you battle," Reid said.

That was exactly what the teams did in their two meetings last season.

New England got a field goal from Stephen Gostkowski as time expired to escape with a 43-40 victory during the regular season. The Patriots then needed overtime to do it again in the AFC championship game, outlasting Kansas City in another shootout, 37-31 in Arrowhead Stadium.

Another close game is expected for their latest matchup on Sunday, with playoff implications for both teams.

New England (10-2) can extend its NFL record to 11 consecutive playoff berths with a win. Kansas City (8-4) can clinch the AFC West title with a win and Oakland loss.

The two teams that have beaten the Patriots this season -- Baltimore and Houston -- both have dual-threat quarterbacks in Lamar Jackson and Deshaun Watson.

Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes said he sees similarities in how both of them attacked a New England defense that is allowing an NFL-low 12.1 points per game.

"I think the biggest thing was when they had their opportunities, they hit them," Mahomes said. "They're not going to give us a lot of opportunities, they're a very good defense and very sound with what they do. It's about taking what's there and when you get the big shot or the big play, you hit that and score touchdowns when you do."

Coming off a week in which New England's defense gave up four passing touchdowns in its loss to the Texans -- doubling its total allowed in 2019 -- safety Devin McCourty said the challenge against the Chiefs will be keeping track of all their playmakers.

"It's almost like they don't win the same way each week. They just have so much talent. I think you see that all throughout the season," McCourty said. "The threat of Mahomes is always there of running the ball, of rolling one way being able to throw the ball back across his body. ... We got to see it last year twice of just his ability of being able to make plays. So, I think we know it, but with this team, the hardest thing is going out there and executing and playing to it."

Keeping Kansas City out of the end zone will be even more imperative because of New England's ongoing issues on offense.

The Jets, Dolphins and Broncos rank in bottom five in the NFL in points per game in 2019 but are all averaging more points than New England (18 ppg) since start of November. The Patriots went 2-2 last month.

Brady's 88.2 passer rating is also his worst since 2013.

The 42-year-old quarterback has expressed his frustrations with the offense in recent weeks and acknowledged during his weekly appearance on Boston's WEEI radio that injuries have also affected their expectations. But it hasn't altered their resolve to fix their deficiencies.

"It's not like we haven't dealt with losses before," Brady said. "I think a lot of it is about mental toughness and realizing that when you don't play well, you don't win. You're not supposed to win when you put less than your best out there. Sometimes you get away with it, and sometimes you don't."

NEW CENTER?

The Patriots could be dealing with another change on the offensive line.

James Ferentz may get the start at center with Ted Karras recovering from a knee injury he suffered in the third quarter of last week's loss to Houston.

Karras has started all 12 games this season in place of David Andrews, who is recovering from blood clots. Left tackle Isaiah Wynn also spent nine games on injured reserve with a foot injury.

Ferentz said he'll be ready if called upon.

"Your job is to step in and that the train doesn't slow down," he said. "We have a bunch of guys on this team that have embraced that role and I just try to keep up with those guys."

MILESTONE WATCH

Brady enters the week with 535 regular-season touchdown passes, the second most in NFL history. Peyton Manning holds record with 539. Drew Brees is third with 532.

With 300 or more yards passing Brady will also have his 93rd 300-yard game, tying Manning for second in NFL history. Brees is first with 118. The Patriots are 76-16 in Brady's 300-yard games.

MOVING ON UP

Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce leads the AFC with 923 receiving yards in 2019.

He needs just 77 receiving yards to become the fourth tight end to have four seasons of at least 1,000 receiving yards in NFL history.

The others are Dallas' Jason Witten, Hall of Famer and former Chiefs tight end Tony Gonzalez and former Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski.

When the schedule came out in April, this weekend's game between the Patriots and Chiefs was the first one circled. The teams had two epic games last season, with the Patriots overtime win in the AFC Championship earning a spot as one of the most impressive victories of the Bill Belichick-Tom Brady era.

Both teams have had their ups and downs this season, as the Patriots have had to rely on defense and special teams for the first time in over a decade. The Chiefs lost their star quarterback to injury and experienced some surprising defeats, already hitting their loss total from last season. Despite their respective drama, both teams arrive at this game needing and wanting a win every bit as much as we thought they would when the schedule was first released.

For the Patriots, this is a turning point game. Win and they'll be firmly in the AFC's second seed and re-establish their position as a team who can beat anyone, especially in their home stadium. Lose and they'll have just a one-game lead on the Chiefs for the second seed and even the division title could be in question with the 9-3 Bills nipping at their heels. A loss would also mean the Patriots will have lost to all three AFC division leaders and call into question if they have any hope of making another playoff run.

So yes, this game is every bit as big as you'd expect it to be and it will be a defining moment of the 2019 season. Here's what the Patriots need to do to get back on track with the Keys to the Starting Lineup!

Weather the Storm
The Chiefs are the best first half offensive team in the NFL, ranking first in yardage and second in points but in the second half things drop off for them, falling all the way to 18th in fourth-quarter yardage and 14th in second-half points. They've raced out to plenty of leads but sustaining their early offensive production has been difficult for Kansas City. They were up 17-3 in the first quarter against the Texans and lost 31-24. They went up 10-0 on the Titans and held a 29-20 lead early in the fourth quarter and still lost. Even without Mahomes, they led the Packers at halftime 17-14 but lost. This is a departure for the Patriots because in last year's two games with the Chiefs it was actually the second-half scoring that was the big problem.

Devin McCourty spoke about the Chiefs ability to adjust, so it will be a 60 minute game, but the Patriots must be prepared to weather an aerial assault right out of the gate. If they get the kind of start like they got last year, holding the Chiefs to nine and zero points in the first halves, they'll be on their way.

I think we have as much chance of winning this game as we have of losing it. The Pats offense has not been good the last 4 games or so and their run game is horrible. Their defense is very good, but those numbers are misleading. They have only played 2 teams with a top 20 offense and 10 games against a bottom 12 offense. Yes, they have only given up more than 14 points twice, but they lost both of those games. So if we can score 20 ...

I wish they hadn't lost last week and weren't the projected two seed right now. They will be out for blood. And it's always hard to win in New England but the Chiefs are 5-1 on the road. If we lose today we will probably get a chance at revenge in the postseason unless the Ravens knock us out first. Don't expect the usual shoot-out. I think the winner will have a score in the low 20s.

Go Chiefs!

I still think the key to this game is going to be the start. We don't have a great chance if we don't get off to a solid start. If we get off to a nice start I think that we will get the win. Lets go do it GO CHIEFS!!!!!!!!!!!

Yes, the Start for sure. Also put a ton of pressure on Brady. He is not mobile so we need to collapse the pocket and force him to make mistakes or throw the ball away. I think if we get two turnovers we win.

TopekaRoy
12-08-2019, 06:06 PM
I never said 20 would be enough to win but that if we can get to 20 we would go on to win. I didn't think the Chiefs would get there in the first half!

TopekaRoy
12-08-2019, 06:10 PM
Defense came to play today. Were it not for a couple of dumb penalties in the first drive the Pats would be shut out right now.

TopekaRoy
12-08-2019, 06:19 PM
Nice catch Travis!

TopekaRoy

12-08-2019, 06:22 PM
Wasn't that a helmet hit on Kelce?

TopekaRoy
12-08-2019, 06:24 PM
Good call to go for it on 4th down. A FG would have been 50/50 from there.

matthewschiefs
12-08-2019, 06:26 PM
Nice drive Would have loved a td but we got points and took a good chunk of time off the clock

Seek
12-08-2019, 06:27 PM

TopekaRoy
12-08-2019, 06:28 PM
Another FG. We have a 16 point lead now. Defense has to stay strong.

TopekaRoy
12-08-2019, 06:44 PM
Yeah, they still need to score twice. We need to get another TD to take them out of the game. Normally, Brady can put up points very fast. I'm not so sure about that, this year.

matthewschiefs
12-08-2019, 06:45 PM
