Notable Quotables:
Chiefs:

"The defense, I think, is one of the big stories of the season. At the beginning of the year, we knew it was going to take a fair amount of the season for that group to really [come together]. We had a new coaching staff, we had new players, we had a new scheme. We struggled a little bit early with that, but over the last four or five weeks I think the defense has really stepped up. They've been a big factor in the last three victories."
--Chiefs Chairman Clark Hunt

Broncos:

"Honestly there's been some fast guys, but I do think [Tyreek Hill]'s the fastest that I've seen in my time. And he's very athletic, he's not just a straight-line track guy fast, he can change direction on the dime, real quick, great runner after the catch, probably be a hell of a punt returner if they wanted him to be."
--Broncos Head Coach Vic Fangio

Prisco's Pick:

http://www.chiefscrowd.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=884&d=1484473553&thumb=1

The Broncos impressed last week
beating the Texans on the road
as Drew Lock had a big game.
This will be a tougher test for him
in a tough place for quarterbacks
to play. The Chiefs defense has
made big strides in recent weeks
and that will continue. Chiefs take it.

Chiefs vs. Broncos: Game Preview
From Chiefs.com (https://www.chiefs.com/news/chiefs-vs-broncos-game-preview-x4858)

It was eight weeks ago that these two old rivals last went head-to-head, with the Kansas City Chiefs emerging victorious over the Denver Broncos behind a strong performance by back-up quarterback Matt Moore – who was in the game for the injured Patrick Mahomes - and a nine-sack performance by the pass-rush.

The game represented a microcosm of the season for both teams, as the Chiefs went on to secure a fourth-straight division title while the Broncos have just five wins on the year, but things have changed in Denver of late under the guidance of a familiar face.

Former University of Missouri star and Kansas City native Drew Lock is now the man under center for the Broncos, leading Denver to victories in each of his two starts. Lock, who attended nearby Lee’s Summit High School and was the 2014 All-Metro Player of the Year, has completed 73 percent of his passes with five touchdown strikes and eight passes of at least 25 yards, posing a 111.4 quarterback rating across his two outings.

And just last week, Lock threw for 309 yards and three scores on the road against the Houston Texans, a team with legitimate playoff hopes, as part of a dominant victory. Lock is the first quarterback in NFL history to top both 300+ yards and 3+ touchdowns in his first-career road start

Simply put, this isn’t the same Broncos squad that Kansas City faced two months back.

“I think the first thing when you put on the tape is you realize this kid can throw the ball. He loves to take shots down the field and he likes to show off that arm strength,” said safety Tyrann Mathieu. “It will be a good challenge for us. Obviously, for him playing here and coming back home, he’ll be juiced up and there will be a lot of excitement for him, so we’ll have to meet that energy and match that energy.”

https://youtu.be/m1l72KQ908c

Mathieu and the Chiefs’ defense are coming off one of their top performances of the season, holding New England to just 16 points as part of an exhilarating victory last week. It continued a trend for Kansas City’s defensive unit, which ranks second in the NFL in points allowed per game (14.0) since Week 11.

“Our defense is progressively getting better as we've gone on in understanding the scheme and what [Defensive Coordinator Steve Spagnuolo] and the other coaches are asking them to do. They believe in it,” said Head Coach Andy Reid. “It's a tribute to Spags and it's a tribute to the coaches on the defensive side. He has good leaders - Tyrann is one of those guys. He unites people, brings them together, and at the same time, has a unique way of being able to challenge guys – including himself. If he makes a mistake, he's not afraid. 'This isn't going to happen again, I've got it.' That attitude is infectious.”

It certainly makes for an intriguing matchup on Sunday as Lock attempts to spread the ball around to pass-catchers Courtland Sutton and Noah Fant, who have each had big games with Lock under center. It’s worth mentioning that Fant was limited in practice this week with a hip/foot injury and is listed as questionable heading into the game. His status is certainly something to watch considering the rookie tight end’s 113-yard performance against the Texans last week.

Sutton, meanwhile, leads Denver in virtually every receiving category with 940 yards and six touchdowns on the season.

"He's big, physical, has a big catch radius and he can go up and get the ball. I would think, if I was a rookie quarterback, that would make me feel really good as a target,” Spagnuolo said. “We have a lot of respect for Courtland. We played him last time and I feel the same way going in, that hasn't changed."

Tailback Phillip Lindsay rounds out an impressive group of young playmakers for Denver, teaming up with fellow running back Royce Freeman to create a formidable one-two punch out of the backfield.

https://youtu.be/DNdWKAGn5zA

On the other side of the ball, Mahomes and the Chiefs’ offense will face one of the better defenses in the NFL. Interestingly enough, the only time Denver has yielded more than 30 points this season was back in Week 7 against none other than Kansas City. In fact, the Broncos’ defense, which has featured the likes of linebacker Von Miller and cornerback Chris Harris Jr. for years, has surrendered 30+ points just nine times since 2016, with four of those occurrences coming against the Chiefs.

Those offensive performances have helped Kansas City string together eight-straight victories over Denver – the Chiefs’ longest winning streak vs. the Broncos in the Super Bowl Era – and it’s something they’ll look to continue on Sunday.

One of the players responsible for a sizable portion of that production over the years has been tight end Travis Kelce - averaging just under 100 yards receiving per game over his last six outings against Denver – and the All-Pro tight end has a shot at some history this go-around.

With just 11 yards through the air, Kelce will tally a fourth-straight 1,000-yard season and become the first tight end in the history of the NFL to do so. It’s an astonishing feat, but one that isn’t a surprise to Mahomes.

“I think the biggest thing with Travis is he does all these things, but the [greatest thing about him] is the type of person that he is,” Mahomes said. “He’s trying to help everyone else out to get open and when his number is called, he just makes the play and does whatever he can to move the chains or score the touchdown and help the team. He’s just a great person and, obviously, a great player.”

https://youtu.be/2IKfbP3UqCg

Mahomes will also have wide receivers Mecole Hardman - who is on the cusp of breaking the franchise-record for receiving touchdowns by a rookie – Sammy Watkins, Demarcus Robinson and the rest of the offensive arsenal available at his disposal on Sunday as Kansas City aims to win a fourth-straight game and notch their 26th victory in their last 29 divisional games.

“For us, it’s about going out there, keep building and keep getting better each week,” Mahomes said. “We understand now that with how their quarterback is playing, they’re playing energized, so we’re excited for a great opportunity against a great opponent at Arrowhead.”

Chiefs-Broncos Preview

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Drew Lock grew up about 15 miles from Arrowhead Stadium in suburban Kansas City, and his family has bled the red and gold of the Kansas City Chiefs for just about as long as the young quarterback can remember.

They'll be trading in their usual colors for orange and blue on Sunday.

Lock will attempt to continue his dazzling rookie run when he leads the suddenly hot Denver Broncos into the stadium where he once dreamed of playing. His task? Take down the Chiefs, who are coming off a victory in New England that sealed their fourth consecutive AFC West title.

"You think about it," Lock said, "that's my home. I've been there a thousand times. Nothing new about it."

Except that he'll be the visitor in one of the NFL's hostile environments.

Making it an even more intriguing homecoming, Lock's father Andy played for Chiefs coach Andy Reid when they were both at the University of Missouri. Andy Lock was good enough to warrant some NFL attention before a leg injury near the end of his senior season caused the offensive lineman to go undrafted. He wound up signing with the New York Giants as a free agent, but he never made his mark in the NFL -- he wound up becoming a successful restaurateur.

"In his heart he was really a quarterback. I used to joke with him about that," Reid said with a grin.

Well, his kid has turned into a heck of a quarterback.

Drew Lock became the first NFL rookie to throw for 300 yards and three touchdowns in his first road start when he led the Broncos (5-8) to a surprising win over the Texans last weekend. His total of 309 yards was third-best by a rookie in franchise history, giving Denver fans some hope that the organization has at long last found a franchise quarterback.

He's the seventh quarterback to start a game for the Broncos since midway through the 2017 season.

"I don't put ceilings or floors on guys. They can go as high as they want, hopefully not too low," Broncos coach Vic Fangio said. "I think overall he's had a good two-week start to his career."

The trick now is to carry it into their game against the Chiefs (9-4), who have their own superstar quarterback in Patrick Mahomes and a rapidly improving defense that caused Tom Brady and the Patriots all kinds of trouble.

The task facing Lock is daunting: The Broncos have won just three of the 17 games they have played at Arrowhead Stadium in December. John Elway won one of those games in seven tries, and a long list of other quarterbacks have struggled with the raucous crowd and often-ugly weather -- snow showers are in the forecast for Sunday with temps in the 20s.

"I think it was good that we got (Lock) his first start at home so when he got his first start on the road it wasn't his overall first start," Fangio said. "We have to go play another really good team this week. He's going to have to deal with the hometown stuff that you guys and they will want to write about. I feel good where he's at."

As the Broncos visit the Chiefs, here are the things to know:

FRANK'S MISFORTUNE

Chiefs defensive end Frank Clark has been dealing with a stomach situation the last couple of weeks that the team thought at first was just a virus. He was well enough to play against the Patriots but it flared up again, so the team sought an expert to figure out what is going on. If he's sidelined down the stretch, it would mean the Chiefs lose their best chance of consistent quarterback pressure at a crucial juncture of the season.

SPEAKING OF THE PASS RUSH

The Chiefs finally showed progress under new coordinator Steve Spagnuolo during a 30-6 rout of Denver in Week 7, when their defense had nine sacks and held the Broncos to just 71 yards rushing. The Broncos need to give Lock more time than they afforded Joe Flacco if they have any hope of moving the ball against Kansas City.

A DIFFERENT KIND OF RUSH

The Chiefs hope to have Damien Williams back from a rib injury this week. He will join a running back corps that has been leaning on veteran LeSean McCoy, rookie Darwin Thompson and journeyman Spencer Ware since losing Darrel Williams to a season-ending injury. None of them have been particularly effective on the ground.

AIRING IT OUT

The biggest bright spot for the Broncos -- other than Lock's emergence -- has been the play of wide receiver Courtland Sutton, who is 10th in the NFL in yards-per-catch and is closing on 1,000 yards. Sutton has put up those numbers while catching passes from Lock, Flacco and Brandon Allen -- not exactly the elite of the elite.

WHAT'S AT STAKE

The Broncos are mathematically still alive in the playoff chase, though realistically they are trying to build some momentum for next season. And while the Chiefs have wrapped up their playoffs spot with a division title, they still harbor hopes of climbing past the Patriots to secure a first-round postseason bye.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — It’s been a while.

The last time the Broncos beat the Chiefs, Peyton Manning was under center for Denver, DeMarcus Ware lined up opposite Von Miller and the “No-Fly Zone” was still intact.

It’s been more than four years since the Broncos stunned the Chiefs in Arrowhead in Week 2 of the 2015 season, and Denver desperately wants to snap the streak.

“Every divisional game is important, and we’ve struggled against the Chiefs the past eight times,” wide receiver Courtland Sutton said Wednesday. “If we go in and — not ‘if’ — when we go in and take care of business in Kansas City, it’s going to definitely shake up the division a little bit. People are going to start to put us in that conversation of a team that can win the division. Like you said, the Chiefs have been running it for a while and it’s upon us to start the wave. Why not this next game?”

The Broncos’ chances will depend largely on rookie quarterback Drew Lock, who aims to become just the fourth Denver quarterback to win a game at Arrowhead in December. Only Manning, John Elway and Kyle Orton have accomplished the feat, and the Broncos are 3-14 in Arrowhead in December since the stadium opened.

Of course, not everything will be decided by the rookie quarterback who is headed home to Missouri.

These are the questions that will help determine a winner as the Broncos aim to keep their slight playoff chances alive:

HOW DOES DREW LOCK HANDLE HIS HOMECOMING?

A week ago, Drew Lock became the first rookie to throw for 300 yards and three touchdowns in his first road start — and he improved his record to 2-0 as a starter.

But all eyes are on this weekend, as Lock attempts to become the first Broncos rookie quarterback to start his career 3-0. He’ll do it in his hometown stadium, and he may need another near perfect performance.

There are reasons to suggest Lock can put one together. When he entered the lineup, the Broncos’ offense was averaging just 15.9 points per game and was converting 27.7 percent of their third downs. In two starts, Lock has bumped the season numbers up to 18.2 points per game and 31.1 percent of their third downs. That’s not an insignificant difference, and he’s done it by leading the Broncos to an average of 30.5 points per game and converting 52.3 percent of the time on third down.

If he can match that stat line, it would be more than impressive against a Chiefs passing defense that ranks 12th in the league.

“They do a lot of different things both from a pressure standpoint and a coverage standpoint,” Head Coach Vic Fangio said Wednesday. “He’s going to have to make some tough and correct reads, figure out where to go with the ball quickly and be able to decipher the pressures from the non-pressures and then the different coverages.”

One note: Lock has won in Arrowhead before. In college, he led Missouri to a 20-16 win over BYU. He’ll look to add another win to his resume on Sunday.

HOW DO THE BRONCOS’ DEFENSIVE INJURIES IMPACT THE MATCHUP?

The Chiefs’ running game ranks just 27th in the league, but a slew of injuries to the Broncos’ defensive line could impact the matchup. Adam Gotsis and DeMarcus Walker have both been ruled out, and Dre’Mont Jones is listed as questionable. The Broncos signed Kyle Peko and elevated Deyon Sizer to the active roster to counteract the losses, and Jonathan Harris will also be active for the Broncos.

The Broncos used just two down linemen at times against the Texans, but if they have to dedicate more resources to stop the run, it could hurt their chances against the Chiefs’ passing offense. Patrick Mahomes hasn’t played at quite the same level he reached during his MVP season in 2018, but the Chiefs still rank fourth in scoring offense and passing yards.

The Chiefs have allowed just 21 sacks, and the Broncos’ defensive line injuries could prove costly in that realm, as well. When healthy, Derek Wolfe recorded seven sacks on the season, and Dre’Mont Jones began to show pass-rush potential, as well. With a depleted line, the onus may fall on Von Miller to make a game-changing play.

If the Broncos can keep the Chiefs one-dimensional while devoting resources to their passing defense, they could find a way to slow Kansas City down and keep the game close.

IS THERE A REVENGE FACTOR?

The Broncos entered their first meeting with the Chiefs this season with a two-game winning streak and hopes of re-entering the division race. With a win on “Thursday Night Football” in Week 7, Denver would have moved within a game of the division lead, rebounded from their 0-4 start and made a statement that the AFC West no longer belonged solely to the Chiefs.

Unfortunately, none of that materialized. The Chiefs — despite playing a half without Mahomes — stonewalled the Broncos’ offense and earned a 30-6 win that sent Denver to 2-5 and effectively ended the team’s hopes at a division title.

There isn’t much to say about the Broncos’ performance that evening.

“We got our butts whooped,” Phillip Lindsay said Wednesday. “Period. They came out there and they handled business and we didn't. The fact is, we weren't prepared mentally and physically, and we didn't go out with the game plan like we were supposed to. We didn't execute. At the end of the day, there was a run that I probably could have busted for 75 yards and I got stopped for seven. Things like that, but now you go back, and you know what you have to do. You have to execute, and we have to be aggressive. We have to be physical. It's a hard-hitting game. The Chiefs are going to come out and they're going to be who they are. For us, we have to go out there and play ball. They're going to punch and we're going to have to punch back. It's going to be a dogfight.”

The Broncos are clearly tired of hearing about the Chiefs’ run in the division and the eight-game winning streak that Kansas City holds over Denver.

Can the Broncos channel some of the anger from the first loss toward pulling the upset in Kansas City?

Never underestimate the power of motivation in a rivalry game.

So there was a funny moment in my section when the ref announced they were out of time outs and challenges

A fellow fan chimes in at the perfect time "And they suck" By that time we were all suffering hypothermia but not enough not to cheer that man :)
