The Chiefs are still playing for a seed,
so the game matters. The Chargers
have long been eliminated. The Char-
gers had a chance against the Chiefs
in Mexico City, but this will be different.
This will be ugly. The Chiefs defense is
much improved. Chiefs roll.

Chiefs vs. Chargers: Game Preview

It was 50 days ago that the Kansas City Chiefs fell victim to a last-minute rally against the Tennessee Titans, dropping their fourth game of the season. The contest demonstrated the razor-thin margin between winning and losing in the NFL, and ever since, the Chiefs have exclusively enjoyed the former.

Kansas City has rattled off five-straight wins since falling to Tennessee as all three phases have seemingly come together at the perfect time, from the offense averaging 27.2 points-per-game to the defense holding the opposition to a league-best four touchdowns while yielding just 9.6 points-per-game in that span.

This streak all began against the Los Angeles Chargers in Mexico City - an instant classic that steadied the course following the loss to Tennessee a week prior – and with the regular season coming to a close, the Chiefs and Chargers are set to clash once again at Arrowhead on Sunday afternoon.

It’s been a difficult season for the Chargers with 10 losses – nine of which coming by a touchdown or less - only a year after earning a trip to the playoffs. The Chiefs, meanwhile, have already secured a fifth-straight postseason berth but still have plenty to play for on Sunday with playoff seeding up in the air.

Kansas City currently owns the No. 3 seed but could end up in either the No. 2 or 4 position depending on both Sunday’s matchup with Los Angeles and other games around the league, so there is still plenty on the line as these two old division rivals go head-to-head to wrap up the regular-season.

https://youtu.be/shQW3tQFoB4

The Chiefs have won 11 of the last 12 meetings between these two teams, picking off Chargers’ quarterback Philip Rivers 20 times in the process. The 38-year-old Rivers has struggled at times this season but remains the ultimate competitor, making Sunday’s matchup more than a standard game between two teams headed in different directions on the year.

"We always know that he is prepared to the max to go against you,” said Head Coach Andy Reid. “He has covered all of the bases. He has the desire behind there - the competitiveness behind it. You have to make sure that you do your homework when you get ready for them. He’s been there for a long time - when you think of the Chargers, whether San Diego or L.A., you think of him. He’s a great player."

https://static.clubs.nfl.com/image/private/t_editorial_landscape_12_desktop/f_auto/chiefs/hbx52e1vfl4mrox1dyil.jpg

Rivers has thrown for 4,334 yards and 21 touchdowns to 18 picks on the campaign, finding wide receiver Keenan Allen for a team-leading 95 grabs and 1,117 yards. Tailback Austin Ekeler and wide receiver Mike Williams have also been productive for Los Angeles, with each tallying more than 900 yards through the air. Additionally, tight end Hunter Henry ranks fifth in the NFL in receiving yards (550) among tight ends since returning from injury in Week 6.

Tailback Melvin Gordon is also in the mix offensively, and while the two-time Pro Bowler’s numbers haven’t quite mirrored his production from year’s past, he’s still one of the more dynamic players in all of football.

Simply put, this team has some playmakers capable of playing spoiler on Sunday, but if the last five games are any indication, Kansas City’s defense is up for the challenge.

No team has played better defense over the last month than the Chiefs, who have held each of their last five opponents to 17 points or less. There were a lot of new faces on the defensive side of things headed into this year, but as the homestretch of the season came into focus, Kansas City’s defense began to fire on all cylinders.

“I think it’s about hitting your stride at the right time. I feel like we’re coming together at a good time and playing some good football,” said defensive end Frank Clark. “Before the year started, I said that we were going to be one of the best defenses in the league at some point. We went through the trials and tribulations, and we’re one of the best defenses in the league right now, so we just want to continue to prove that.”

https://youtu.be/GesKWBvNTcA

It’s certainly made a difference that isn’t lost on the Chiefs’ offense.

“I’ve seen them every single day going through these extra walk throughs, meeting with each other, meeting with the coaches and doing whatever they need to do in order to play like they have been playing of late,” said quarterback Patrick Mahomes. “With me on the offense, we understand that if we can go out there and put up some points, then they’re going to hold the lead for us and we’re going to find a way to get a win.”

The Chargers, meanwhile, can play some defense, too.

Los Angeles yields just 20.9 points-per-game on the season and features one of the top pass-rushing tandems in the NFL with defensive ends Joey Bosa and Melvin Ingram coming off the edge. All-Pro safety Derwin James also returned to action earlier this month, bolstering the Chargers’ secondary.

Unlike the matchup earlier this season, however, the Chiefs’ offense is set to feature wide receiver Tyreek Hill amongst the rest of Kansas City’s pass-catchers. Hill left the previous contest against Los Angeles early in the game and didn’t return, but now healthy, the electric Hill will look to maintain his usual stellar play versus the Bolts, which includes five touchdowns in just seven-career games.

https://static.clubs.nfl.com/image/private/t_editorial_landscape_12_desktop/f_auto/chiefs/vqduec9iosvd0esqwnma.jpg

Elsewhere on offense, tight end Travis Kelce has a shot at some history on Sunday. With just six receptions, Kelce will tally his second-straight 100-catch campaign and become the first tight end in NFL history to record multiple triple-digit catch seasons.

Both players will likely be relied upon against Los Angeles as the Chiefs look to notch consecutive 12-win seasons for the first time in franchise history, but while the records and stats are exciting, this team has its sights set on one goal moving forward.

“We’re still building and I think that’s the biggest thing. I know we’re at the end of the season, but I feel like every single week you can see this team getting better, and we want to [keep] that momentum of going and playing our best football going into the playoffs,” Mahomes said. “We understand the Chargers are a really good football team and we know it’s going to be a great challenge, so we’re going into it with the mindset that we’ve had the past few weeks of playing our best football.”

Game Preview from ESPN.com (https://www.espn.com/nfl/preview?gameId=401127990)

Chiefs-Chargers Preview

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- The thousands of fans who pack into Arrowhead Stadium to see the Kansas City Chiefs play the Los Angeles Chargers in their regular-season finale Sunday will likely have one eye on the game and one eye on their phones.

At the same time, the New England Patriots will be playing the Miami Dolphins.

The Chiefs (11-4), who long ago wrapped up their fourth straight AFC West title, need to beat the Chargers and hope the Dolphins can spring the upset at New England to jump the Patriots for the No. 2 seed in the AFC. That would give Kansas City a first-round bye, a divisional game at Arrowhead and an easier road back to the conference title game.

"Yeah, listen, if we get it, that's great. If we don't, we'll be ready for that too," said Chiefs coach Andy Reid, who is keenly aware that nothing the Patriots and Dolphins do matters unless Kansas City takes care of business on Sunday.

"It's not in our hands necessarily," he added, "so whatever we get. When you're in the dance you got to be ready to dance."

The Chiefs certainly have been waltzing toward the playoffs. They have won five straight since a midseason malaise, and it's not just their potent offense and record-setting quarterback Patrick Mahomes that has been responsible for it.

Kansas City's rebuilt defense, which was the biggest culprit in their playoff collapse against the Patriots last season, has held back-to-back opponents without a touchdown. In fact, the Chiefs are allowing fewer than 10 points a game since they returned from their late-season bye, taking some of the pressure off the offense to score in bunches.

"Coming toward the end of the year, our chemistry is coming back from last year, the bonding from all of us," Chiefs wide receiver Tyreek Hill said. "It's all fun. It's been like that, we just had to find it."

The Chargers (5-10), who have yet to win a divisional game this season, could be reaching a significant crossroads as they prepare to head into a new stadium next season. Philip Rivers is in the final year of his contract and while the 38-year-old quarterback has said he wants to play next season, he may not have a choice in whether that happens in Los Angeles.

Rivers has struggled all season, particularly with turnovers, and the Chargers appear poised to move on from him.

"These are questions really for probably mid-January, you know? Let the dust settle a little bit," Rivers said. " I am beyond thankful for the 16 years we've had here and I'm thankful, hopefully again, to get one more shot in Kansas City. I think it's year-to-year, and again I don't know. I can't answer that. Again, I'd rather just stay right here for now."

As the Chiefs try to beat the Chargers for the 11th time in their past 12 meetings, and keep their hopes of a first-round bye alive by wrapping up a perfect record against the AFC West, here are some things to know:

CATCHING KELCE

Travis Kelce is already the first tight end in NFL history with four straight 1,000-yard receiving seasons and back-to-back 1,200-yard seasons. But if the Chiefs' perennial Pro Bowl pass-catcher grabs six more against the Chargers, he would also become the first tight end with consecutive 100-catch seasons.

"We just have to take it game by game and we have one more game before the playoffs start," Kelce said. "We know that we punched our ticket in, but we have to finish strong, and take care of Los Angeles next week."

SUGGS-ESTION TIME

The Chiefs hope to work Terrell Suggs into the game plan more after the seven-time Pro Bowl defensive end spent last week getting acclimated to his new team. The Chiefs, who have lost Emmanuel Ogbah and Alex Okafor to season-ending injuries, claimed Suggs after he was waived by the Cardinals. The longtime Ravens pass rusher needs one sack to eclipse Demarcus Ware (138 1/2) for eighth on the career list.

DIVISION DISPARITY

While the Chargers have yet to win a divisional game this season, the Chiefs are poised to wrap up their second 6-0 run under Reid. In fact, they are 27-3 in their past 30 games against AFC West opponents.

"Our record is what it is," said Chargers coach Anthony Lynn, who led the Chargers to a 12-4 mark last season. "We have another divisional rival in Kansas City, and we'll get it ready to go and try to get a win in our division."

GETTING DEFENSIVE

The Chiefs have never gone three straight games without allowing a touchdown, something they could accomplish by holding Rivers and Co. out of the end zone Sunday. The Broncos and Bears each managed a field goal the past two weeks.

HOME COOKING

After winning last week in Chicago, the Chiefs improved to 7-1 away from home to match a franchise record for road wins in a season. Things have been less rosy at Arrowhead Stadium, which is typically considered one of the toughest environments in the NFL. The Chiefs are 4-3 so far with consecutive losses to the Colts, Texans and Packers.

The Los Angeles Chargers play the Kansas City Chiefs on Monday, November 18, 2019 at Estadio Azteca in Mexico City, Mexico. [FINAL SCORE: KC 24 - LAC 17]

Storylines

Chargers Look to Finish Strong

With their record now sitting at 5-10, head coach Anthony Lynn and the Chargers are looking ahead to their final game of the season, a road matchup with the AFC West champion Kansas City Chiefs.

“We’re professionals,” Lynn said. “We have a job to do. I expect everybody to show up on Sunday and do a good job.”

Besides mentioning that a win in the season’s final week would create confidence and momentum heading into the 2020 season, Lynn highlighted a few players he’s been impressed with over the past few weeks, the first of which being 2019 first-round pick Jerry Tillery, who played “his best game” of the year last Sunday, according to Lynn.

“His motor has been fine all year, it’s just learning what we’re doing,” Lynn said. “He’s a tall man, he’s very long, so learning to play with leverage in the National Football League, that’s been a process.”

Derwin James = Gamechanger

Sunday will mark Derwin James’ fifth game of the season since returning from injury, and defensive coordinator Gus Bradley attests that James hasn’t missed a beat.

“Some guys can dictate the outcome of a game defensively,” Bradley said. “He’s one of those guys where if we use him right, he has that ability.”

Bradley referenced how James is able to use his explosiveness to make difficult tackles in open space, speed that “really eats up the grass and gives us a chance to make some plays.”

In four games, James has compiled 26 tackles (17 solo), including three for loss, a similar pace to his All-Pro stat line from last season where he finished with 105 tackles (75 solo) and four tackles for loss.

“I (think) DJ (Derwin James) has played well every game he’s been back,” Lynn said. “I love his motor (and) his demeanor. It doesn’t matter what the score is, he’s just taking it one play at a time and he’s giving it everything he’s got.”

And according to Bradley, the sky’s the limit for the 23-year-old safety.

“There’s a lot of growth (left) for him,” Bradley said. “He’s created a standard, and I think as he keeps going, his standard will increase. He’s driven to not be satisfied with where he’s at, and (neither) are we.”

Chargers Approaching Milestones

If wide receiver Mike Williams tallies 37 yards and running back Austin Ekeler accumulates 50 against the Chiefs, the Bolts will possess a trio of 1,000-yard receivers, as wide receiver Keenan Allen has already exceeded 1,000 yards this season. The trio would become just the sixth in NFL history to reach the 1,000-yard mark and the second trio in Chargers history (John Jefferson, Kellen Winslow, and Charlie Joiner did so in 1980).

“It would be special for those other two to get to 1,000...within the game plan,” offensive coordinator Shane Steichen said. “If it happens, that would be great for them, but all three of those guys, Austin, Keenan, and Mike do a heck of a job week in and week out. It’s a special group.”

https://scontent-dfw5-1.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/81227527_3086455094715531_2304156981146943488_n.jp g?_nc_cat=101&_nc_ohc=Sc2wkOmKQA8AQmDzevNou4JNMqKJ6DPehV9JYx9Gei Kg4u6sLSMXdN46w&_nc_ht=scontent-dfw5-1.xx&oh=3254e8e2c98c4e2875eb6fb6100f1fe2&oe=5E9BEC03 (https://www.chargers.com/video/philip-rivers-slings-23-yard-completion-to-mike-williams)

Quarterback Philip Rivers echoed Steichen’s enthusiasm about his teammates’ accomplishments.

“Certainly you’d love to see Mike (Williams) get over 1,000 (receiving yards) and Austin (Ekeler) get over 1,000 (receiving yards),” Rivers said. “To have three receivers get over 1,000 hasn’t happened in 30-something years...It’s pretty awesome, when you think about it, if you end up getting three doing that… Seeing those young players develop and turn into the players they are, it’s always exciting.”

Allen needs five catches to reach 100 this season and eight to set a single-season team record, which would break the team record he set in 2017.

https://scontent-dfw5-1.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/80693277_3086455881382119_1859465202714542080_n.jp g?_nc_cat=111&_nc_ohc=CcVfyiD9ktMAQm1wFFRKjBJHQrOgAt-oYo8RMKqQUoV0liSwhU4BbAVPw&_nc_ht=scontent-dfw5-1.xx&oh=a46fc5d3ec502d75961cac581e57cbc9&oe=5EAFAF4A (https://www.chargers.com/video/austin-ekeler-drags-across-the-middle-for-17-yard-catch-and-run)

Meanwhile, Ekeler needs four catches to claim the second-most by a Chargers running back in a season. Steichen said he is not surprised about Ekeler’s success this season, elaborating on the third-year running back’s strengths.

“He works so hard, he’s a strong, powerful guy that can run fast, (and) he’s got good quickness in the open field to make guys miss,” Steichen said.

Additionally, if Ekeler catches five of more passes in Kansas City, he will join Allen to become the first-ever set of Chargers teammates to each have at least 90 receptions in a single season.

Chiefs Players to Watch

QB Patrick Mahomes

Despite missing two games in the middle of this season due to injury, the reigning NFL MVP has maintained his elite level of play in 2019. Ranked second in quarterback rating behind Lamar Jackson, Mahomes ranks fourth in the league with 296.7 passing yards per game and has 25 touchdowns this season.

https://scontent-dfw5-2.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/81870324_3086456691382038_5413870482074107904_n.jp g?_nc_cat=107&_nc_ohc=0rQHvVB1_g4AQmQylDmRMNLLykPPzvI7aBQOVyzcoQ KMkkGD4UCc-cl6Q&_nc_ht=scontent-dfw5-2.xx&oh=4f73decc1c8cef05d7cbfcbe4af3134f&oe=5E9B412B (https://twitter.com/Chiefs/status/1208927658253402112)

Although the Chargers came out on the losing end the last time these division rivals met, the Bolts defense contained Mahomes, as the quarterback finished the game 19-of-32 with 182 yards, a touchdown and an interception.

TE Travis Kelce

Selected to his fifth straight Pro Bowl, Kelce continues to prove why he is one of the most lethal tight ends in the NFL.

Not only is Kelce once again leading all TEs in receptions and yards receiving, but he ranks second in the NFL behind Julio Jones with 12.7 yards per touch and recently became the first tight end in history to record four straight seasons with more than 1,000 receiving yards.

"Kelce's a tremendous athlete and finds a way to make plays," Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy said. "Him and the quarterback, Pat (Mahomes), they got a unique chemistry, and they got a unique bond. That's what makes it special."

Kelce and Mahomes have been the Chiefs’ top offensive contributors this season and are a crucial reason why Kansas City ranks fourth in offensive yards per game with 382.1.

RB Damien Williams

Although Andy Reid deploys combinations of his running backs in any given game, expect Damien Williams to receive the most snaps at that position on Sunday.

After missing four straight games due to injury, Williams returned to action last Sunday against the Bears, compiling 92 total yards and one touchdown, the most yardage a Chiefs running back had accrued since Williams had 109 total yards in Week 10.

Not that big a miracle considering the Pats offense this year, but

I may be alone in this thought, but the end of the Belichick/Brady seems to be in sight. Brady can only continue for so much longer before his body just flat out says "NO" to playing football.

No offense to the Patriots who've earned their right to be there and then some....but it's nice to see the Chiefs get a break after earning with a six game win streak!! Will take my miracles (or close ones) any way they come!

Father time is going to catch up with him at some point. My hope is that he's able to retire from the Patriots rather than get his body destroyed from a team that's in rebuild mode and has no offensive line.

Speaking of older QB's that might be looking for better teams...Wonder if Rivers is going to jump ship in LA and go with another team? Denver? Redskins?

I think Denver is going to role with their young QB they just drafted. I think it's his gig next year. There will be some teams giving Rivers a look if they move on from him. He will be playing somewhere next year. Just a feeling but I think that he'll be back for one final year with the Chargers
