This is a matchup between two
of the best young passers in
the league. The Texans beat the
Chiefs earlier this season, but
the Chiefs defense is much
improved. That will show up in a
big way. The Texans defense has
major issues, which is why I think
Patrick Mahomes will light them up.
Look for a big game from Mahomes
as he outplays Deshaun Watson.

Chiefs vs. Texans: Game Preview

It’s finally that time of year.

Nineteen weeks after the National Football League kicked off its 100th season, just four stadiums remain open for business as the Divisional Round of the playoffs gets underway this weekend.

Arrowhead Stadium is one of the four, serving as the site for a much-anticipated re-match between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Houston Texans with a berth in the AFC Championship Game on the line. These two teams met way back in Week 6 in a back-and-forth game that ended in a Texans’ victory, but the Chiefs marched to an 8-2 record down the stretch following that contest to help set up the second postseason clash between these two teams in the last five years.

It has all the makings for a thrilling re-match on Sunday as quarterback Deshaun Watson and the Texans return to Arrowhead after engineering a 16-point, second-half comeback against the Buffalo Bills last week to keep their postseason alive.

The performance demonstrated a resiliency that impressed Chiefs’ Head Coach Andy Reid.

"They're a good football team and they don't give up. That's the way you prepare yourself. You're getting a team that's going to play to the end, play four quarters of football,” Reid said. “We take a lot of pride in doing that, [too], and they take a lot of pride in doing it. That's what will make it a great game."

https://youtu.be/uMli4CHn_7A

Watson completed 20-of-25 passes for 247 yards and two total touchdowns in the contest, putting Houston ahead in the final minutes of regulation and again in overtime to seal the victory. Watson is one of the top young quarterbacks in the league, and his dynamic play-making ability was on full display throughout the Texans’ comeback.

“He’s mobile, he’s smart and he knows how to win. He has the experience to win tough games, and you saw that last week,” said defensive tackle Khalen Saunders. “We’ve played mobile quarterbacks this year, so we know how to deal with that, but it’s about closing out and playing until the clock hits zero because you never know what can happen.”

https://static.clubs.nfl.com/image/private/t_editorial_landscape_12_desktop/f_auto/chiefs/beqnzge9hmlhmxo8tygu.jpg

Watson has one of the top receivers in all of football at his disposal in All-Pro pass-catcher DeAndre Hopkins, who hauled in 104 grabs for 1,165 yards and seven touchdowns in 2019 and added another six catches for 90 yards in last week’s playoff victory.

The Texans were without their other top option against the Bills, however, as wide receiver Will Fuller missed the game with a groin injury. Fuller is questionable headed into the Divisional Round and his availability will certainly be something to watch as one of the better deep threats in the NFL.

"The obvious [things] are speed and trust with the quarterback. He’s an explosive player. We've seen that firsthand and we understand that,” Reid said. “He’s a great deep threat and [he] does some good things in the intermediate game, too."

Houston also features tailback Carlos Hyde - who topped the 1,000-yard mark rushing this season – to round out an impressive group of playmakers, but if the performance by the Chiefs’ defense over the last six weeks is any indication, Kansas City is certainly up for the challenge.

No team in the NFL has yielded fewer points-per-game (11.5) than the Chiefs since Week 11 as the defense surrendered a total of just seven touchdowns in that time while particularly excelling in the red zone, holding the opposition out of the end zone on 65 percent of trips inside the 20-yard line.

It’s worth mentioning that defensive tackle Chris Jones is questionable entering the game with a calf injury, but regardless of who suits up on Sunday, safety Tyrann Mathieu – who coincidently played for the Texans last season – believes the defense can carry its strong play into the postseason.

“Mentality, focus and coming in with a certain mindset - I think [those things] are what’s key. Can you see yourself making plays Sunday?” Mathieu said. “I feel like we’re prepared for the stage, so it’s all about going out there and really believing in that.”

And on the other sideline, the Texans recently received a major reinforcement to their defense in the form of three-time NFL Defensive Player of the Year J.J. Watt. The veteran defensive end returned to action last week after missing the bulk of the season with a pectoral injury and certainly bolsters a Houston pass-rush that ranked toward the bottom of the league during the regular season.

In fact, it was a sack on Bills’ quarterback Josh Allen by Watt that first began to turn the tide in last week’s comeback victory, demonstrating a tangible impact in only his first game back. Chiefs’ quarterback Patrick Mahomes, meanwhile, will look to elude Watt on Sunday with the help of left tackle Eric Fisher, who has found success against him in the past.

“Fish has been playing at a high level for a long time now and he’s played against a lot of different defensive ends that are really good,” Mahomes said. “Just being able to have someone that you know has been able to go out there and compete with the best and hold his own, it’s definitely something that gives you a lot of trust to stay in the pocket to make those throws.”

https://static.clubs.nfl.com/image/private/t_editorial_landscape_12_desktop/f_auto/chiefs/w7keyrhyrkl8rnrlujoe.jpg

Mahomes, who led the Chiefs to the fifth-best scoring offense in the NFL this season, is no stranger to postseason fireworks. Kansas City scored 31 points in each of the reigning league MVP’s playoff starts a year ago, and while the Chiefs came up just short in the AFC Championship Game last January, Mahomes appears confident he can build off of last year’s postseason run.

“For me, I think the only thing that’s really different is having the experience of playing in games like this at Arrowhead and being able to win one and lose one,” Mahomes said. “I understand that every single play counts, every single rep in practice counts and that you have to take advantage of every single opportunity that you get.”

The Chiefs had the benefit of some additional preparation with a first-round bye, which is a situation Reid has taken advantage of time and time again in the past. Reid is 22-4 (including the postseason) following a bye week, routinely turning the extra time into victories. Conversely, while Houston fought back to win last Saturday, it required overtime and a taxing effort on both sides of the ball.

It remains to be seen if those circumstances will affect Sunday’s game, but one thing is for certain as the Chiefs take the field at Arrowhead: there is nothing quite like the playoffs.

“Coaching in these types of games, I love it. This is what it’s all about. You’ve got great competition, great coaches, great players, and the opportunity to play in front of our fans in a great setting,” Reid said. “That’s what it’s all about. We love that. That’s why we do this.”

Chiefs-Texans Preview

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- The Kansas City Chiefs knew they were in the market for a quarterback a couple of years ago and, with several first-round talents available, they invited Clemson's Deshaun Watson and Texas Tech's Patrick Mahomes for visits.

Both were put through their paces.

They scribbled plays on white boards to test their recall and dissected game film to test their mental aptitude and situational awareness. They went onto the practice field and ran a series of drills to test their athleticism, then were asked to throw every pass in the book, from deft screen passes to intricate timing routes to deep, downfield heaves.

The Chiefs liked everything Watson did over those couple of days.

They loved what Mahomes did.

So the Chiefs traded up to select Mahomes with the 10th overall pick. The Houston Texans jumped on Watson two picks later. And the start of their professional careers have continued to run side by side, with Mahomes leading the Chiefs to back-to-back AFC West titles and the brink of a Super Bowl appearance last season, and Watson guiding the Texans to consecutive playoff appearances for the third time in franchise history.

Now, their parallel paths will intersect when the Texans visit the Chiefs in the divisional round of the playoffs on Sunday.

"How great is that for the National Football League, first of all, these good young quarterbacks?" Chiefs coach Andy Reid said. "We actually brought Deshaun up here, too, before the draft and had a nice visit with him. We have a ton of respect for him. He's a great player, he was great in college, he is great now. He's going to do nothing but get better as time goes on."

"When you have guys like Deshaun and Patrick, you don't want to over-coach them," said Texans coach Bill O'Brien, who also had both quarterbacks in Houston for pre-draft visits in 2017. "They have such great instincts. They see the field very well. With Deshaun, you might be able to point out a few things, but his guy has a huge heart and he's doing what is best for the team and trying to win games, and you don't want to over-coach that."

That win was especially sweet for Watson, who has a bit of a chip on his shoulder about Kansas City choosing Mahomes over him. And the win should give the underdog Texans a boost of confidence knowing they have beaten the Chiefs (11-5) and their star QB once this season.

"It's cool to see a fellow friend of mine and a guy that's playing the same position as me have so much success and see it in live action. So it's definitely dope," Watson said. "It's going to be a good experience. Like you said, we played earlier this year. It was a good game, went back and forth. But yeah, it's just two good teams going head to head and we're just trying to be the best we can for our team and help our team win."

Trying to figure out what has changed since that October matchup -- and how to counter it -- could be one of the biggest story lines Sunday. Here are a few more to watch as the Texans and Chiefs play for a spot in the AFC championship.

WATT'S UP

The Texans' J.J. Watt was in for about 50 plays and had a sack against the Bills in his first game since missing eight with a torn pectoral muscle that required surgery. The three-time NFL Defensive Player of the Year wouldn't say whether he expected to play more Sunday.

"Just because I played one game doesn't mean my pec magically healed. It's still in basically the same situation it was in before this game," he said. "After not playing football for two months, then playing 50-plus plays, you're going to be sore, you're going to be a little beat up. It was a quick reminder of how difficult the game of football is when I woke up on Sunday morning. That extra day was nice to be able to rest and recover and get back to work now with the guys."

WATTS UP, PART 2

On the opposite sideline, the Chiefs will be turning to backup safety Armani Watts to help fill the void created by the loss of standout rookie Juan Thornhill to a torn ACL in Week 17. Watts has primarily played on special teams this season, but he showed plenty of promise as a rookie last season before a season-ending groin injury in October.

FULLER (TO THE) HOUSE

The Texans' offense could be buoyed by the return of Will Fuller V, who has been out with a groin injury. The wide receiver was close to playing against Buffalo, and O'Brien said he's been "trending in the right direction" but was noncommittal about whether Fuller would play against the Chiefs.

Fuller gives the Texans a big downfield threat and the opportunity to score regardless of down and distance.

GROUNDED IN REALITY

A big reason why Houston beat the Chiefs in Week 6 was Carlos Hyde, who rumbled for 116 yards and scored two touchdowns against his former team. The Texans also ran the ball well last week against Buffalo, while Kansas City's own offense has struggled to find balance behind running backs Damien Williams, Darwin Thompson and LeSean McCoy.

The Chiefs have tried to keep McCoy's workload in check, even making him a healthy scratch late in the year, and now it's time to see whether the veteran running back still has a couple of big games in him.

UNLIKELY HERO

Houston's third-string running back, Taiwan Jones, appeared in 11 games during the regular season but was used almost exclusively on special teams before the regular-season finale, when many players rested with the team's playoff spot secured. But against the Bills, when Watson escaped two sacks and rolled out to make a play in overtime, it was Jones who he found for a 34-yard reception to set up the winning field goal.

"I've been patient and I've been working all off-season, all season and it means a lot for the coaches to call my number in a crucial moment like that," Jones said. "It reminds me that they do believe in me like I believe in myself."

The Texans hit the road for a Divisional Round playoff game against the Chiefs. Houston won the AFC South and defeated Buffalo last Saturday in a Wild Card playoff contest at NRG Stadium. Kansas City won the AFC West with a 12-4 record and had a first round bye. Here are five things to watch when the two squads square off Sunday inside Arrowhead Stadium at 2:05 p.m. First Glance is presented by First Community Credit Union.

1) Continued greatness – Deshaun Watson is coming off a comeback masterpiece. He guided the Texans back from a 16-point third quarter deficit, running for a score and tossing another en route to the overtime victory over Buffalo. When the proverbial dust settled, he completed 20-of-25 passes for 247 yards, wasn’t picked off, and had a passer rating of 121.2.

In the Week 6 win against the Chiefs this season, Watson was picked off twice. But he also ran for two touchdowns, threw another, and completed 30-of-42 pass attempts in the Texans victory.

It was his heroics on the game’s final drive that were perhaps most impressive. With Houston on top 31-24, Watson and the Texans got the ball on their own 37-yard line with 5:03 remaining in regulation. Watson then completed passes for 18 and nine yards, mixed in a 10-yard run, and then facing a 4th-and-3 with 2:00 left, hit DeAndre Hopkins for eight yards. The Chiefs were out of timeouts, and Watson kneeled twice to seal the win.

In all, it was a nine-play drive that killed the clock for the Texans.

“He’s someone that can make big plays happen no matter what the scenario is,” Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes said. “He’s going to fight until the end. You know that going into the game and you know that coming in as an offense and as a defense and as a team that you have to make sure you’re on top of it all game long. It’s going to be a 60-minute fight or even longer, whatever it takes.”

Watson, though, isn’t concerned with what he did in October or last week, or what a win would mean for the franchise.

“We can't worry about what happened in the past, we can't worry about what's going to happen in the future,” Watson said. “We've got to worry about the moment now and take care of the moment now, and then we'll see what happens whenever that time comes."

2) Hopkins & his fellow WR – Hopkins is coming off a 90-yard performance in the Wild Card win over the Bills. He did much of that against All-Pro cornerback Tre’Davious White. He’ll be joined by Kenny Stills, who didn’t play in the first matchup with the Chiefs. Stills caught four touchdowns this season, and averaged 14 yards per reception.

A big question mark has been Will Fuller V’s status. He left the Week 16 win at Tampa Bay with a groin injury. He didn’t play in Week 17, and after working out in pregame, was inactive last week against Buffalo. Head coach Bill O’Brien said Friday that Fuller’s progress was “so far, so good,” but that the speedy pass-catcher would again be a gametime decision.

Fuller spoke Friday as well and said he’s “feeling great” and “locked in, ready to go.” He also made it clear he and O’Brien will talk before the game for a final check to make sure he can go.

If he’s able, Fuller’s an important weapon for the Texans offense. The Texans won eight of the 11 games Fuller started, and he’s caught nine passes this year for 30 or more yards. That’s the 7th-best mark in the NFL.

"He stretches the field,” Chiefs head coach Andy Reid said. “He's a gifted kid. We know that. We know that he can scoot, so you've got to respect that."

3) Pound the rock – The Texans rumbled for 192 yards on 41 carries in Week 6 at Kansas City, and Carlos Hyde ran 26 times for 116 yards and a score. Duke Johnson chipped in with five carries for 34 yards, and he also caught a pair of passes for 20 yards. One of those receptions was an 11-yard touchdown.

Hyde is “looking forward” to playing the Chiefs, but stressed that the success he and the Texans had in October won’t matter too much after kickoff this Sunday.

“It’s different now,” Hyde said. “That was early in the year. Things are different now.”

In the 10 games since the Texans ground game went off, the Chiefs defense has allowed just two players to rush for over 100 yards in a game. All told, Kansas City’s gone 8-2 since that loss to the Texans. In those eight victories, the rush defense allowed teams to average 92.1 yards per game.

https://scontent-hkg3-1.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/82195531_3120245344669839_9064210826721755136_n.jp g?_nc_cat=101&_nc_ohc=7rcJlbI0CyYAX8WkUWZ&_nc_ht=scontent-hkg3-1.xx&oh=0a82dc241bdac0075ea7d7a1b02295a2&oe=5ED919A9 (https://www.houstontexans.com/audio/in-the-lab-big-chance-vs-the-chiefs)

4) New Faces – In addition to Stills, there will also be a few other key faces that weren’t on the field for the first Texans-Chiefs matchup. Cornerbacks Gareon Conley and Vernon Hargreaves, III were on the Raiders and Buccaneers, respectively. In the Week 6 game, Phillip Gaines and Lonnie Johnson, Junior started and played 100 percent of the snaps at the cornerback spot. Bradley Roby left in the third quarter of that contest with a hamstring injury. Roby, Conley and Hargreaves are good to go for Sunday, and there’s a good chance Johnathan Joseph will join them. He was inactive last week, as well as the first time the Texans faced KC.

Roby faced the Chiefs twice per year playing with the Broncos from 2014 through 2018. Defensive coordinator Romeo Crennel said that familiarity with Kansas City could be helpful in limiting the ever-dangerous Tyreek Hill.

“Any time you play against a guy more, you kind of know him more, you kind of get a great feel for him and what he's going to do, how he runs his routes,” Crennel said. “So, I think that that's helpful.”

5) Watt and the pass rush – J.J. Watt returned from injury last week and was impactful in a variety of ways. His third quarter sack helped ignite the Texans rally. His presence altered the way the Bills protected. He drew blockers away from some teammates, which allowed players like Jacob Martin and Whitney Mercilus to make plays of their own.

“This is a very experienced group,” Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy said. “It all starts up front. It starts with Watt and it starts with Mercilus. I’m not trying to disrespect anyone else on that team. But they have a great unit.”

Generating a pass rush against Mahomes is important, because the Chiefs scored 28.2 points per game this season, and were fifth in the NFL with 281.1 passing yards per game.

“Whether it's a short pass or it's long pass all the way down the field, he can do everything,” Watt said. “It's a great challenge.”

There is NO excuse whatsoever for the Chiefs to come out & stink up the field like this. If it was a 7-7 or a 14-14 ball game, then that would be one thing, but they are already trailing 24-0 and are doing nothing but serving as scrimmage fodder for Houston.

This comeback led by Mahomes is indeed Joe Montana-like -- not Turd Elway-like, as Turd Elway never in his career EVER overcame this big of a margin & certainly NOT in the post-season.

The 2nd half will be interesting, but however it winds up, we have to give major PROPS to the Chiefs for fighting back the way they have in this game.
