Chiefs plan to sign kicker John Carney

Kicker John Carney (right) has been around a while. Carney, 43, is third on the all-time field-goal list.

Determined to solve their field-goal problem, the Chiefs turned to one of the NFL’s most prolific kickers for help.

They planned today to sign 43-year-old John Carney, who is third on the NFL’s all-time field-goal list. Carney began his NFL career with Tampa Bay in 1988 and has also kicked for the LA Rams, Chargers, Saints and, earlier this year, Jaguars.

Carney was one of three kickers the Chiefs worked out on Monday to replace Dave Rayner, whom they plan to release. The others were Billy Cundiff, who has kicked in previous seasons with the Cowboys and Saints and went to camp this year with the Falcons, and Nick Novak, who also worked out for the Chiefs in September when they signed Rayner.

Cundiff also remained in Kansas City on Monday night.
The Chiefs had discussed signing Cundiff as well and using him to kick off but apparently hadn’t made a final decision.

Kickoffs and field-goal range are concerns teams have had with Carney, but not his accuracy from closer distances. He made nine of his 11 field-goal attempts this season with Jacksonville, where he was an injury replacement.

His longest successful kick was 41 yards. He made a 20-yarder in a game against the Chiefs at Arrowhead Stadium in October but missed a 48-yard try.

Rayner made 15 of 22 field-goal attempts this season after joining the Chiefs for the season’s second game.
He missed four of his last six tries, including two in a three-point loss to Indianapolis two weeks ago and a 33-yarder in Sunday’s 20-17 loss to Oakland.

Coach Herm Edwards passed on having Rayner try a potential game-tying, 41-yard field goal in the final minutes.

Eggsactly and all...

My GF's sister is an NICU nurse and helped out with Tynes babies a few month ago.

She asked him why he was leaving, and he kind of shrugged, and said I will be back, hopefully.

That was bizarre that they let him go.

I thought he won quite a few games for us.

In their latest attempt to remedy a kicking problem that has affected coach Herm Edwards' in-game decisions, the Kansas City Chiefs (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/clubhouse?team=kan) have reached a contract agreement with 18-year veteran placement specialist John Carney (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?statsId=549).
Carney, 43, will become the third different kicker for the Chiefs this season.
The fourth-leading scorer in NFL history, with 1,796 points, Carney was one of three free agent kickers auditioned on Monday by Kansas City officials, joining Billy Cundiff (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?statsId=6154) and Nick Novak (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?statsId=7505). The Chiefs are replacing third-year veteran Dave Rayner (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?statsId=7378), who converted 15 of 22 field goal tries and all 14 extra point attempts in 10 games this season.
But Rayner made just five of eight field goals from 40 yards or more and, in the fourth quarter of last Sunday's loss to the Oakland Raiders (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/clubhouse?team=oak), he was wide left on a 33-yard attempt. Later in the quarter, Edwards eschewed what would have been a 41-yard try, and instead tried to convert on fourth-and-one from the Oakland 23-yard line. Rookie tailback Kolby Smith (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?statsId=8402) was stopped for a loss of one yard.
Rookie Justin Medlock (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?statsId=8414), a fifth-round draft choice, opened the season as the Kansas City kicker. But after struggling in training camp, and making just one of two tries in the season opener, Medlock was released and the Chiefs signed Rayner to replace him. Rayner had been cut by Green Bay, where he made 26 of 35 field goals in 2006.
Carney was released by New Orleans this spring after six seasons with the team, following a trade that brought the Saints former Miami standout kicker Olindo Mare (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?statsId=3888). But Carney was subsequently signed by Jacksonville when incumbent Josh Scobee (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?statsId=6896) suffered a quadriceps injury. In eight games with the Jaguars, Carney made nine of 11 field goals and 20 of 21 extra points, for 47 points.
For his career, Carney has converted 422 of 516 field goal attempts and 530 of 538 extra point attempts. The former Notre Dame standout has scored 100 or more points in 10 different seasons. Carney has appeared in 258 games with Tampa Bay (1988), San Diego (1990-2000), New Orleans (2001-2006), and Jacksonville (2007).
Details of the contract Carney will sign in Kansas City were not immediately available.

i just dont get it. i really dont.

first we draft a young player to develop and to kick field goals. then we release him

we sign rayner to kick field goals, he miss some crucial ones, and he's out the door.

now we sign old man carney. sure he might be good, but damn he's old. if we were lookin for old-timer we should of just took a jersey and slapped it on ol'man chiefster:11: and wheelchaired his butt out to kick field goals... probably coulda of got him to do it for free, who knows... im just jokin chiefster :wheelchair:

but ****..... we went from youngster rookie, experienced, and to the nursing home in a season, and its not even the end yet....

I'm about to post Herm's Press Conference on the site.

Listen to him squirm about his decision making abilities.

One of the best times is when he is trying to explain away his abysmal decision to skip Mason Crosby.

Herm is a moron.

Now I'm wondering if the Chiefs will use another draft pick on a kicker.

No question about his accuracy. His distance and kickoff ability are the major concerns. Get ready to see a lot of kickoffs being received at the 15-20 yrd line.

Gilbert Harris stunk up the field on every play Sunday.
Should have kept Rayner for kickoffs, and ditched Gilbert, he sucked.

Why are the Chiefs even bothering with a new kicker? We're 4-7 and totally out of playoff contention and we're just now signing a new kicker? Save your money and let Rayner seal the coffin on the rest of his career until the season is over. Then go and get a real kicker under the age of 30. Carney isn't going to do squat. He's strictly a feel good stop gap measure. The front office is just trying to cut down on the booing for the televised games.

Herm can't smell talent when it farts in his face.

We are not out of any play off race at this moment.

If we lose this week then we start talking rebuilding.

Or maybe go back to Medlock and see if he is really good or if he sucks as bad as he looked, He may end up a great kicker with some more experience, (Rayner may also but man he is sucking it up and he isnt a rookie) Carney does nothing for the team, he isn't the future and he doesn't have the leg to kick the 50+ just another way for Herm to give up.

Somehow I doubt this will quiet the booing, fire Herm if you want to quiet the booing.

We should bring Medlock back to the team to get some time to develope, same could be said about Rayner, at least keep him for kick offs.

I wanted GB to win but Favre got hurt and somehow the backup kept them in it!

The play calling at the end of the game by GB was ridiculous!! I think Herm was calling in the plays!!!

and the only reason that we are still in contention is because our whole division sucks

What are we in contention for? The AFC West? The playoffs? Hahahahaha!! I think we're in contention for who finishes last in the West right now. Those "lowly" Raiders are one game behind us in last place!

Oh puhleease! We're 4-7 and I have not seen the Chiefs on any list for even a wildcard, let alone winning the West. Even if, and I mean a big if, the Chiefs won the West and got in the playoffs what then? We got walloped on the road with another embarrasing playoff loss. The last time we lost 23-8 and that was with a offense that could actually do something and wasn't ranked 30th.
